I've had female dogs all my life. No particular reason but it was just a "go with what you know" thing. 11 years ago I took in Ollie, a male ESS who was causing problems for his family because he was nervous around kids. Took about a year to fully earn his trust but then, holy s**t, he just became THE best dog I could ever hope to have. Our relationship was, honestly, almost "telepathic". he always seemed to know exactly what I was going to do and he'd always know exactly what he needed to do for me. For example, if I reversed my car out of the garage to go somewhere he'd hop in with me and sit in the back. If, OTOH, I reversed my car out of the garage to work on it, he'd sit on the lawn and spectate. I have no idea how he knew the difference but he always did. He was 5 when I took him in and (perhaps I shouldn't say this) I don't think I ever deliberately taught him a thing. He'd just watch what I was doing and, the next time I did the same thing, he'd just figure out the best thing he could do. Last year he developed a tumour on his back which the vet' told me would gradually cripple him. It didn't. He remained healthy and full of life until the tumour finally damaged his spinal cord and almost completely paralysed him overnight. He died in my arms a week ago and I lost the best companion I could ever hope to have. I'm not sure when it'll happen but eventually there's DEFINITELY going to be another homeless male ESS out there who's coming to live with me. I owe it to Ollie to make a home for another dog like him.
Awww what an amazing story. They certainly do know your feelings. I'm sorry for your loss, although it sounds like you both gave each other an amazing life. Thank you very much for watching our video and also commenting and sharing with us about Ollie.
I have a two year old ess named Ollie. A real sweetie and energy for days. Mine loves car rides too and will stand with his head in the door of any vehicle left open, waiting for me to give the word to jump in!
I've owned three springer spaniels.... one female and two males... and all three were wonderful dogs. I had always assumed that females were a better choice because they would be less aggressive and less likely to roam, but that really wasn't the case. The males were also exceptionally sweet and affectionate. You simply cannot go wrong with this breed. They really are active and energetic dogs, so they will demand a lot of exercise, so if you want a couch potato dog, this breed isn't for you. But they are extremely intelligent, easy to train, and very loyal and affectionate. They aren't the best watchdogs because they tend to like everyone, even total strangers. There are plenty of wonderful breeds, and the Springer Spaniel is one of the best ones.
The best ones??? The BEST ones come from the BEST humans who tend to them, like you and this girl! HAVING a dog is like having a mirror of your own personality. He copies you at the spot! If you are nervous, he will be also, but if you are calm and wellcoming, easygoing, the dog will be the same way in public and at home. BEWARE, though, NONE of them like to be alone much, but Springer Spaniels, well, Spaniels in general, DO NOT LIKE to be ALONE for a longer period of time, because they cling to you VERY MUCH!!! And if they destroy your shoe or chew on your book it is because they are searching for you and your smell because THEY MISS YOU SO MUCH! It is uncomprehensible LOVE - they do not see or judge you if you are tall or small, child or a grownup, big and fat, or slim and skinny, rich or poor, old or young, brave or a coward, scared, ugly, or of a profound beauty, short, long hair, or compleately bald, naked or in ruggs, or wearing branded clothes, disabled or enabled, shortsighted or ... Well, shortsighted in an ophtamological way is no problem, only if you are shortsighted in your heart could be a problem, but not even then IF you LET the DOG LEAD YOU!!! So, having a loving household means having a DOG because dogs are the GLUE, the CENTERPEACE and the emotional UPBEAT, your EXCERSIZE trainers and your LOVING SUPPORT at ALL stages of your life and your children's lives, too! At the end of this long comment, since this girl was so lovely to talk about the genders - males ARE more affectionate and not that moody, and more easygoing - exactly like us females in our human world. Boys should know that, so PAIR UP with a male in your household, keep that testosteron level HIGH, ha ha ha, to escape being flooded with progesteron and estrogen!!! ONE female boss is more than plenty per household ha ha ha, though they ARE loving ♡♡ and CARRING, that is SOOOO TRUE!!!
I have a female at home she’s not very old but we had someone show up the other day when we were in bed and she tried to do a protect of my partner she was so scared as she was doing it she peed a little bit but she was certain no one would get near her mum and barked away at them
Hmm so have a male and female springer both intact, now the male well yeh hes sweet hes loving and can friendly with most dogs but if he feels a dog is a threat he can get very aggressive with other usually going for their lips, tho its most common for him to get like that with staffies, xl bullys, pugs, french bulldogs that kinda looking dog
Excellent information I have had 8 Springers over the years both bench and field/ male and female!! Soon to pick up my new black and white TRI Male. Can't wait!!
I just lost my third Springer (all male) last week. Losing each one was a gut punch because what a wonderful breed they are. You can't lose with either gender.
We are bringing home a male ESS next month. I am so happy to hear the males are extra affectionate, that's just what I want! We have a female cat, and my partner did not care what sex the dog was, but I have been dreaming of having a "baby boy" so we picked out a boy and can not be more excited! I know two young adult male ESS that are best friends, and I am hoping to introduce our baby to them when he's old enough.
You may immediately. It is the best! Show them the baby and they will sniff it and love it instantly. The dogs KNOW and they go into protective mood immediately! Also, they are CAPABLE of telling you that something is wrong with the baby. I DO NOT KNOW HOW THEY KNOW, but they sense with their nose when the temperature of the vaby goes up and they TEND TO WARN YOU!!! Also, let yout dog smell your breath occasionally - he will be able to know if you are sick or healthy! Some teach dogs to speak through that "tap the words" on the carpet. I never tried, but can be USEFULL!! They learn to speak to you in a direct way!!! It is SO amazing to learn that creatures around us share language and thinking and have insight and can communicate what they feel and think with us!!! Immagine the trees speaking to us!!!! Let alone grass... Animals are so genuine and profound! We should just listen to them and try to understand, for they stilk have their sharp senses, although ours have weakend...
You will never regret getting a Springer. They are amazing dogs, are extremely smart, and crave affection and attention. Now that you have had him for two years now, I bet you are madly in love with each other!
@@OSheaSpringers - Mine was a male (Gerry) he was dominant in a springer way, It absolutely broke my heart when he had to go... Puppy to grave 13 1/2 years of 💗
Over all good explanation, how ever. First thing new springer owners NEED to do if figure out do I want a Bench or Field. The difference between the 2 is energy level, field being true hunting dogs and bench being show dogs. Field regardless of sex are high energy and need lots of play time, in return they are extremely focused on the here and now, so agility training maybe a option if you are not into hunting. Bench are generally more relaxed, and make unbelievably great service dogs, bomb and drug sniffers as a companion friend for anyone who suffers from PTSD, or epilepsy. Males are as stated not as much of "bitch" to deal with. I have had 2 Bench Springers, all male and one field and the differences are very noticeable to the point I turned down female PTSD service dogs that I was offered. But then again that is my life style as a Cdn Forces vet. And if you want to have a truly heart melting experience expose babies to them, train the Springer to love tea parties and love the child. It's worth it!
Hey Paul! Yes very valid points which I would 100% agree with! Thanks for pointing this out. Also, thank you for your service to our country. All of our dogs are show/bench bred for the most part. Some of our lines come from Europe where they don't differentiate between the two from what I have heard. So there is a mix there. Thanks again for watching and the thorough explanation and comment.
@@OSheaSpringers I also had read about the Field vs. Bench Springers...do you know if that is the same with Welsh Springers or are they more all of a "standard" variety?
I had a Male liver and white English Springer a few years ago I currently have a female Miniture Poodle Cocker Spaniel but I think I might go for a Male liver and white or black and white English Springer again for my next dog after all the Male liver and white English Springer I had before was just like the description you gave for a male
So incredibly helpful, so much great information her-much thanks. Count me as one who has always been around female dogs, which is what I'm used to and would "prefer" probably for that reason. Guess I'm also not the only one who lost a dog and would have a hard time getting in my case the same breed....which is why I'm looking at new breeds. Such beautiful pups!
I have a male and female currently. I find that my female is more independent and is not as attached and snuggly as my male is. My male is always by my side and wanting to be on my lap.
Just picked up our second ess she is a black Tri roan. it’s been 15 years since we lost our Rosie and thought it was time for another. Like a female for a bunch of reasons but they always care about doing good. Faster at potty training.
Thanks for the comparison video. Clearly there is a difference in stamina and endurance between the show and field/working Springers. It is clear that males are physically larger and with that more physically powerful than the females. Power aside, is there a difference in stamina and endurance between the males and females. Does physical size or male/female influence their stamina and endurance? On a 20-30 mile hiking day (maybe back to back hiking days on a multi-day or multi-week thru-hiking trip) would one tire before the other, or would the males and females be evenly matched for stamina and endurance? Likewise, my chosen dog would also have the opportunity to swim and run alongside my canoe on multi-day, long canoeing trips covering 20-30+ miles a day. A tired dog riding or sleeping in the canoe is Ok, but having to carry the dog at the end of a long day of walking is a different matter. Friends have told me that they have had to carry their dogs out of the mountains in the past. A smaller dog in the canoe (or joining me in a small lightweight hiking tent), particularly on white water or long open water crossings is easier, but does size and sex equate to stamina and endurance? N.B. A Labrador Retriever would have the stamina and endurance for both types of trips, but a smaller dog would be better in the canoe or tent, hence wandering about the stamina and endurance of male vs female ESSs. The right dog will absolutely love and thrive in my world, but the wrong one will hate it and will probably be scared to come on the next trip!
We have springers it's all about how you treat them they love you so much back if you love them they love to hunt swim and just be with you constantly cant ask for better dog
Absolutely Roxanne! Any love you give them they will return and THEN some. They are so so affectionate. Thanks for commenting. Hope you are enjoying the channel!
Is there anything unique about the Welsh Springer Spaniel (as opposed to the English Springer Spaniel) when it comes to a female vs a male? Or do the comments regarding the ESS apply equally to the Welshies? Thank you 🙏
For our male lab, we were told hold off neuting till 1yr b/c of their hips, and growth issues. Does that appy to females? We are about to bring home a 9wk old female
There are lots of great opinions for both sides of things. If you can handle your girl going into season and don't mind dealing with that, it's not a bad idea. They do make doggie diapers so they don't drip all around the whole house. Sometimes they can bleed for up to 2-3 weeks. Other people can't be bothered with that and have them spayed earlier. We always recommend 6 months. We've always had good luck with that.
I love my female however She is so into chasing birds that she pulls me all over the place. I am trying to find help to teach her. I can't do just a normal walk she is on go and chocks herself on collar. Has anyone had the same issue's?
Check out McCann Dog Training here on UA-cam! I've been watching them for weeks and I know it's going to make the difference when I get my ESS puppy next weekend! This will make my 4th ESS, btw. Good luck!
Hi Susan. We don’t give opinions on other breeders. Instead we recommend that it is always best to contact many breeders and see who your preference is. We are located in Strathroy Ontario. Feel free to message us at osheaspringers@outlook.com if you would like. :-)

At what age would you say it is optimal to introduce a second dog? I imagine it's probably not ideal for a much older dog to share their space with a brand new puppy. Thank you for the video, it was lovely and informative as always!
Really any age with a springer is fine. We've had people bring home 2 puppies at the same time, had people where their original dog is a senior dog and they want a new puppy so the older one can 'show them the ropes'. It makes it MUCH easier to train when you have a second dog already.
Don't know if this is still relevant, but I allow my Springers to mature to 2 yrs before I bring in another friend, other wise you have a could of "kids" who will drive you nuts. I also have Shelties and Springers as the characteristics of both breeds and their exact size plays well off each other
@@paulflak2823 hey! Thanks for the reply! I think I've settled on having just the one pup. My springer boy gets stressed around resources when other pets are present, so it would likely not be fair to either him or the new pooch to have to be worried a lot. 2 years sounds like a good amount of time to wait though!
Hello, we have some doubts, maybe can you help? We have a 4 years old German Boxer and we started to think about English Springer Spaniels. In your opinion, could these breeds match well? And the second question: this our Boxer is a male...could we take a male English Springer Spaniels ? Thank you!
Hello! I'm not sure that I can give you the information you're wondering about. An English Springer Spaniel would do fantastic with any breed. I'm just not sure if the boxer would be ok with them. I don't know their temperament to be honest. Sorry I can't give you a more definitive answer!
Always had females. Current is a Liver Roan named Schlitz. Super attached and affectionate. Also nuts and acrobatic. Can clear couch without touching it. Have to ween her off that b4 she gets hurt.
fixed males are better than fixed females... they just want to please and are so loving. Currently I have a whole male and he is all about he is in charge!
Lemme add a thing about male as i have a male springer Above ALL he don't stay at home and leaving home when he are alone(means don't have another dog at home) and knows any female are in the neighbourhood especially when the female is in heat(i am not joking) This one thing is irritating about male but as this is the natural and i am just sharing my opinion otherwise it's toooo much lovely soooo much playful and energetic dog.
Yes! We really do need to do one. We have been putting it off because the under cabinet lighting hasn’t come in yet. Time is moving on though so maybe we should just give an update! Thanks for requesting it!
I’m getting a female from my mothers springer spaniels(: Her fathers name is George and her mothers name is Gigi. They are almost 2 weeks old. Should be opening their eyes for the first time any day now. I’m gonna name her Nala. She has a heart on her back(:
In all my experiences with dogs, females are more likely to bond stronger with a single individual, and have more drive in my opinion to do what owners want. Where as males, are better for family situations where it will be for a family pet, and laze about... That being said, your dynamic in raising them determines what drive they will have. I have only met one female springer, and gosh was she a suck up to her "Male" owner. Than again the Male was the one who wanted the dog, and was eager to treat/ show affection. On that same note, I have had tons of female dogs and two males. My females were all very bonded to me, and had separation anxiety when I would leave the house even if my ex-wife was home or left with grandma. Where as all my males were very open to the family dynamic of being around my ex's family. To build on that, I found my females all more protective when it came to protect what they knew was "pack" property. Being that, that is the way that I have also seen other dog families, I put some good amount of weight on females being more for individuals and males for family situations.
Oh? What part specifically? I think it's possible you had other music or videos playing at the same time. There was no music playing while 'the girl' was talking. :P
Yes! I would totally agree with that. Males are just happy happy. Females for sure have more drive. I believe that's just in their instinct to provide for their pups back in the day. Thanks for watching and commenting Jill.
I’m living in Canada as well, Nova Scotia specifically. Just wondering where you’re located and if you ship your pups across the country? Thanks so much 🇨🇦☺️🐶
I consider it a sacraledge to keep a Springer just for a pet!!! Sure the pet part comes as part of the package, but these are Gun Dogs!! And only the Border Collie or the Setter revivals their intelligence!! They can learn over 300 commands! They will never be happy being just a pet. You must spend hours training this dog, and he must be allowed to hunt!!! You have to get rid of that energy!!! Give him something to do even if it's just keeping your checkbook :)

Love both dogs best dog l every had
Male it is. Thanks for the vid
Good luck!
Thank you for the video. Puppies so cute and great information. 🙋♀️💕🙏🏻🇺🇸
You're very welcome Darlene. Hope you are doing well!
I am thinking of getting a puppy from Carhan Springers near Sarnia Ontario. What do you think?
Hi Susan. We don’t give opinions on other breeders. Instead we recommend that it is always best to contact many breeders and see who your preference is. We are located in Strathroy Ontario. Feel free to message us at osheaspringers@outlook.com if you would like. :-)
I have had both and found very little difference in training or behaviors.
Thanks for sharing!
Good information!
Hey Bernadette! How is Sophie doing?
@@OSheaSpringers like the song, “That girl is on 🔥!” Loves the outdoors and running thru the garden, and dislikes getting her feet washed but if she’s going to run thru the gardens she’s got to get her feet washed afterwards, loving her! She’s so clever and growing sooooo fast!
I have to male dogs one a beagle mix and one a German shepherd would they do well with a springer spaniel?
I have no doubt! English Springer Spaniels are great with all types of dogs.
Are there any good springer spaniel breaders in california
I'm really sorry, I do not know of any. I know a breeder in Wyoming. If you search Rocky Mountain Springers you will find Denise. She has some awesome pups and has sent some on flights before. Hope that helps.
Great advice 💞xx
Thanks! Let us know when we can get you yours to Scotland ;-)
@@OSheaSpringers easy answer. Next time you come over 😂 😘
We have a male . so beautiful. I´m from Argentina. this is not a popular breed.. i found it reallly hard to get him. . but . my question tto you is... as you said before,.males are better with girls....but. what happpens if there are three women in the house.. only one taking care of the dog,. obviuosly the other two are teenageers, and he can´t do anythinghing without me.. firtst..crying..now barrking....
Any age they will work it out as long as it is a nice household
They have big litters
Male all the way! My Cosmo is so loving and silly.
Males are awesome for sure!
Always had females. Current is a Liver Roan named Schlitz. Super attached and affectionate. Also nuts and acrobatic. Can clear couch without touching it. Have to ween her off that b4 she gets hurt.
That's amazing. Yes they definitely have the energy and ability to be a 'springer'!
Any chance because of all the males you’d have a male pup available?
Hey Mark, no all of our puppies are spoken for already. We're looking at Sept-Oct before we would have a puppy available.
@@OSheaSpringers we are on a long wait list with the breeder in Wyoming you referred me to 😢
I am on my second male Springer i never yet had a female send me one to study lol
Haha. Strictly for studying purposes eh?
@@OSheaSpringers you bet lol love my Springer
I had a Springer she got cancer I had to put her down I didn't want to suffer it was bad I loved that dog her name was baby
So sorry to hear this Jeff. It is always hard to lose a beloved pet. So happy that you did what was best for her though.
fixed males are better than fixed females... they just want to please and are so loving. Currently I have a whole male and he is all about he is in charge!
The video starts by Hilly stepping on the other puppy's poor head! Oops. Bull in a China shop, just like me. 😬🤣
Haha. That's funny that you noticed. They're all over each other.
Lemme add a thing about male as i have a male springer
Above ALL he don't stay at home and leaving home when he are alone(means don't have another dog at home) and knows any female are in the neighbourhood especially when the female is in heat(i am not joking)
This one thing is irritating about male but as this is the natural and i am just sharing my opinion otherwise it's toooo much lovely soooo much playful and energetic dog.
Certainly when a male is left intact he will wander and look to breed. We always encourage people to have their dogs spayed/neutered.
Will there be a kitchen reno update video?
That's cute! Congrats!
As always..👍👍
Thanks!
It's too bad the music was so loud; I couldn't hear what the girl was saying.
Oh? What part specifically? I think it's possible you had other music or videos playing at the same time. There was no music playing while 'the girl' was talking. :P
♥️
My males seem to be more happy go lucky. My females have more of a killer instinct when hunting. Never had a bad one
Yes! I would totally agree with that. Males are just happy happy. Females for sure have more drive. I believe that's just in their instinct to provide for their pups back in the day. Thanks for watching and commenting Jill.
first off why are there no cover on the electric plates... big problem with little noses moving around... cover your electrics, girl!
hmm, those electric outlets worries me ;)
You and me both! Haha. Good eye.....
it`s a difficuly situation. i know .. all women want to be loved... but really?? that much??
I had two males they wanted to kill each other.
You sound American sometimes and Scottish sometimes lol
Well I'm originally from Scotland so that makes sense. I moved to Canada in 2009. So not quite an American accent... but close!
@@OSheaSpringers makes sense I am from Glasgow with a springer lol, but couldn’t work out your accent
I’m living in Canada as well, Nova Scotia specifically. Just wondering where you’re located and if you ship your pups across the country? Thanks so much 🇨🇦☺️🐶
What is up with dog community and this breed.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ is de boy en girt
I consider it a sacraledge to keep a Springer just for a pet!!! Sure the pet part comes as part of the package, but these are Gun Dogs!! And only the Border Collie or the Setter revivals their intelligence!! They can learn over 300 commands! They will never be happy being just a pet. You must spend hours training this dog, and he must be allowed to hunt!!! You have to get rid of that energy!!! Give him something to do even if it's just keeping your checkbook :)
