- We're really proud of the community we have here on UA-cam, Discord, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc... and all those who follow us at gigs too! We get so many wonderful and encouraging messages and are truly humbled by how wonderful you all are.
However, as with anything on the internet, we get our share of negativity as well. But, we take it all in good stride and have a laugh about it amongst ourselves. We hope this brings a giggle and some encouragement for those who've been feeling down.

Not all of us are like that, AC4 is one of my favourite games, I prefer some shanties in AC because it's just nostalgia, but the longest johns are just the absolute best

But ngl I started listening to you guys more than them because I think you're better :) Longest Johns was my top artist of 2019 on spotify because I like to sing along in the car. Someday I'll be on a boat and just bust out a well practiced shanty, leading the crew to respect me more than the captain and a mutiny will ensue. Once I seize command of the vessel, I will take to the seas and plunder all the riches and booty a pirate could dream of.

Fear not, all the supportive ones are very much noticed and so very appreciated. We're always overwhelmed with how wonderful they are :) This is our way of dealing with some of the bad in good humour though

You guys stay the way you are! I've listened to your songs for about 6 months now and you've raised yourselves through the ranks of other singers of this kind easily. Yes, you may not have the sheer mass of people to correctly sound like a ship of sailors. Yes you may change some songs to your own style. But your songs have captivated me above all others. If I weren't a student with no job I'd buy all of your songs and subscribe on twitch, but alas. Love you guys!

My girlfriend introduced me to your crew and I was a little hesitant at first since I hadn’t gotten used to no instrumental but after listening to a couple of your more popular songs I could see why they are popular! The songs you produce are actually some the the best shanties I’ve heard. Yeah, they’re not just like Black Flag shanties ... because they’re better. There’s so much more realism in your songs. No tacky auto tune to ruin the mood (although a bit here and there is okay for some bands), instead it’s just song pure from the heart.

As an actual sailor who started a shanty group at a Maritime academy, you guys are what we aspired to be haha, these losers don't have the faintest idea what they're saying lol

Admittedly, they are quite rare! It's always going to happen when you make stuff on the internet though. We choose to accept it and make light of it, which hopefully puts a positive spin on it and gives people a few laughs as well
We all know that JD has a great radio voice, but the other guys are great narrators too. It sounds so soothing and relaxing, it took me a while to realize that all those comments are so negative... When is the LongestJohns audio book coming out?

I found this channel about a year back after listening to AC4 shanties, and I much prefer the genuine, warm, 'home-made' feeling of your songs. So keep it up! And I'm glad you can have a laugh about mean comments, show them haters what 'being a man' is really about!

people who complain about a song not sounding the same as another groups version just need to just realize the point of having other covers of the song.

Four minutes and sixteen seconds of epically awesome musicians and sound artists; reading worthless comments from equally worthless and tone deaf fools who can't sing a single note properly, or carry a tune in a water truck much less, attempting to criticize ACTUALLY TALENTED SINGING ARTISTS who sing lovely renditions (and originals) of sea shanties.
That's a summary alright! It's all good though. We know what we do is niche and isn't for everyone, although we hope to be inclusive enough that it could be! This isn't intended to call attention to negativity, but to put a positive spin on it instead and hopefully provide a few laughs for our wonderful community along the way.

Haha, hopefully not! We discussed the possibility of that happening and will deal with it if/when it does. The hope is that this doesn't encourage negativity, but instead puts a positive spin on the unavoidable negativity that comes from creating stuff on the internet.

Negative ones are definitely pretty rare, but they definitely do happen! We've thought about positive ones, but sadly don't think it'd work well as a video. First, there are so many lovely folks out there who've commented for us to be able to choose, and we'd worry we'd upset people if we didn't choose theirs. Second, it'd be really hard to do without coming across as big headed and smug. BUT, the positive comments are felt so much more than the bad ones and we really do appreciate every single one!

They definitely do exist, but they are in the vast minority! I'll be honest, I have deleted a lot of the ones read out in the video. Not because they bothered us, but because they started fights and arguments with fans replying to it. We don't really want our channel to be somewhere that makes people feel bad or want to fight

This is the most prudish, snobby, haughty, holier than thou way to handle mean comments I've ever seen... and it's absolutely fantastic!
As for the Black Flag shanties, I would argue that the Longest Johns and the singers in Black Flag are equally skilled. True Black Flag may have good shanties, you can never forget the Longest Johns doing "Santiana". To say Black Flag is superior is rather bogus. The Longest Johns are just as skilled and awesome to hear. Keep it up, ya scallywags!
