I had a similar reaction when I attended PaxPrime one year. From the 1960’s I started playing military board games from companies such as Avalon Hill and Simulation Productions (SPI). Later the original white box edition of D&D even the original Zelda on the TRS 80.
We used to do that when I was a kid. We had these 8 bit games without a lot of story to them and usually we long lost the instruction manual. So we would make up our own stories while playing. It was a lot of fun.

But she still always has her Nintendo 3DS right next to her TV chair :)
I got to disagree heavily. Sports and outdoor movement are 10 times better than sitting down inside. Especially for physical health, which is directly connected to mental health.
@@druidofthefang Why not both? I'm a Nana & I play video games, have for 20 yrs. The Sims series, Skyrim, & Fallout are my favorites. My kids used to watch me play, my grandkids grew up sitting next to me while I played. I play with my adult kids now. Younger co-workers are amazed when they find out, but the response has always been super positive. Keep on gaming Grandma! We love you!!
Hey! My mom is 67 and has been playing games for the past 25 years. Something I have always loved about her (well... unless she was stealing 'my' game time xD) and been proud to say to anyone. So many cool memories together. Keep on gaming Lisa! :)
Gods, I miss WoW! I'm a female gamer in my late 50s and know it sorta fallen out of favor, but I could solo for days. The graphics are so beautiful, after a full day at work IRL I would roam the country side ig and enjoy the solitude. Do a little farming, do a little battle, do a little crafting. Sigh, good times good times.
Don't let the bad overshadow the good. It's very easy to over value the negatives in life over the positives. Horrible things happen EVERYWHERE, but should be let decide how the world is for us?
The suicide thing hit me hard. Such a strange feeling to know that you are one of the reasons people are alive. All respect towards this strong, sweet woman.
Shirley curry broke my heart so bad I actually cried. She is mean and nasty.. she complains about people picking on her.. she is is the one starting it! I dont know anyone who would intentionally disrespect an elder for no reason, After what I experienced, It was Her throwing shade at me and laughing when her fans joined in. She is a stain on the skyrim community. Her behavior is out of control! I never did or said anything to deserve the many time she lashed out. I really loved her too.
Kevin Ferguson isn’t that yhorm the giant..?poor guy help his people but his own people turn on him..yhorm has scarifies a lot for his people but no one appreciate him..
Grandma Shirley is just... nice. She's a genuinely nice person, and it's sad how rare that is, especially on the internet, which can be a toxic pit of misery at the best of times. I hope she's healthy and happy and gets to play Elder Scrolls VI, and I hope she's able to attend a few more conventions, given how enthusiastic she is about them. Great job with the documentary, guys. The presentation, the music, everything was perfect. Here's hoping there's more of the same on the way.
She is more of a gamer than MOST people nowadays. Games are meant to be played at your own pace, and at your own ways where many players have missed the point about gaming.
Shirley just announced her retirement from gaming videos This was the first time I heard of Shirley She’s a wonderful person and she changed the Skyrim community forever! Happy retirement Shirley!
I would be so so so happy if I could have Shirley as a follower in the next Elder Scrolls game. She would totally stop you and say "just look at that view. Wow." :) :)
Shirley, thank you for sharing. I’m a 72 year old Gaming Granny who started gaming with Morrowinds in 2003. I’ve thought about streaming but never had the courage. I might just give it a try since seeing your story. God Bless!
@@ShirleyCurryTheOlderGamer Ma'am, I would seriously like to have a cup of coffee with you or if you drink I could get some Michigan made whiskey or beer.
I play Final Fantasy XIV and we have a role play groups that live for that kind of stuff. You can put a role play icon by your name, designate your house as a role play zone, etc.
Gopher is one of the youtubers that plays Skyrim as a character, much like Shirley does. As a player, he knows about most of the places here and there, but like Shirley said "The character doesn't know" His gameplay with Fallout and Elder Scrolls games are a bit different from hers, but only in the feeling those two provoke. In how they play the games they are very similar (minus cursing, depending on Gopher's character, his character may curse)
And then she makes some tea and have honest, life-changing conversation with the burglar convincing him to be better and making him cry like a little kid in the process.
she really is like a grandma to me. you see, my REAl grandparents passed away a few years ago. i've started watching her channel recently, and it just feels like she is my grandma. thank you, grandma Shirley
Yeah, just recently I've lost all my grandparents (both sides from mom and dad) which has kind have broken me a bit more. Watching her content really helps.
I don't upload gameplay, I just recently got an Xbox 1 and I'm still figuring it out, plus I'm not that good , I just really love to play 😄 most of my files are on my 360 , Nintendo 64, Game cube and Wii
It's not just for fun or enjoyment, it's about learning these amazingly designed worlds and experiencing the unique aspects that goes into each one. I hope your having fun too though!
@@PoorEdward I play Final Fantasy XIV with a guy in his 70s, his doctor encouraged him. Having a diverse community I think helps people build social skills.
@@Gee-xb7rt personally I don't even think diversity matters; no matter if your black, 80 years old, it doesn't matter to me, what matters is who's behind that mere body. But I do agree it does help minorities feel more comfortable if they perceive the world differently or are sensitive
the fact that she calls her viewers "grandkids" i think is also part of the appeal. so many people don't have parents or grandparents that treated them kindly in their youth, and it brings a lot of us comfort to be spoken to so gently and lovingly. grandma shirley is a gem, such a beautiful hilarious soul.
I'm 34. After watching me play Breath of the Wild for months, I finally got my mom to try it at 71 years old. She was convinced she would die the first time something attacked her, but she didn't. She killed it, and she was hooked. I posted about it on my blog, and it skyrocketed overnight. I haven't gotten a single negative comment on it, and my mom has gotten nothing but love and encouragement on her adventures. I spent weeks letting her run around and practice on my 100% file, posting updates every so often, and last month she finally started her own file. It's been a co-op playthrough with me doing the things that are still just a little too difficult for her, and we've been having a blast together. She decided she wants to be part of the 900 Club and get all 900 Korok seeds like I did, and we've gotten over 150 so far over 40+ hours. When she was unsure about trying the game, I told her about Grandma and that made her give it a go. I'm going to show her this documentary now so she can know more about Grandma. 😊
I think people compared her to Bob Ross because she's also an artist. Her paintbrush is a mouse and keyboard and her canvas is Skyrim. Love you, Shirley!
Imagine if she try The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild now, she’s gonna have an absolute blast! The exploration and scenery in that game is amazing.
I adore her so much - she breaks all these boundaries of age, gender, ideas of what we are “supposed to do” in life ...but does it all in the most wholesome, uplifting way. Truly special!
This is good because there's no Gameumentary dude's face on screen or voice-over. It's all about Shirley telling her story, not this channel telling it.
Omg this woman is beyond cool. She's rocking two monitors, mechanical keyboard and she's touch typing, and uses a chaos spectrum with 1ms response time lol. She knows all the jargon and what not. This is pretty impressive haha. Also what she said "how can you ever win this game, it goes on forever" -- that's pretty much been my relationship with Skyrim haha. I must have played thousands of hours so far, and modded it to the brim, but I was never interested in finishing the main quest. There are still things I haven't "got to" in Skyrim. And I don't intend to any time soon.
@@holdmybeer I thought there were just too many Skyrim videos, couldn't see the reason to make another. But I have though of making one explaining how to play some games, for older people. Things younger people think are obvious never occurred to me when starting some games. And from watching some of Shirley's Friday Grabbag, I find I'm not alone.
Her story about her first character getting killed by a frost troll was hilarious LOL. That's like George R R Martin level of storytelling. I love her wish she was my Grandma!
Yes and it is a talent in my eyes. I played skyrim once, 100% on one character in story mindset, for months, loved it but i lost my file and cant start up new one anymore bevause i feel like i know it all and dont have the imagination to experience it differently.
I answered them politely like I was talking to a child that didn't have any brains. OMG she may be 83 but her roasts are on point like dang grandma. Eventually they learned to treat a grandmother with respect...... PUT SOME RESPEC ON THAT.
I’ve seen so many people being horrible to this lovely old lady, It seriously makes my blood boil, I won’t understand how one can be completely void of human compassion.
Regarding two comments Shirley made; People don't watch you because you're old :( Sure, it might be the novelty that makes them curious and brings them in, but the reason they stay is because you're a wonderful person. And you're very young at heart, in my opinion. The comparisons to Bob Ross is because you're a positive person, and watching your videos can be very therapeutic and calming. I don't even want to acknowledge the people leaving mean comments, I'm just happy Shirley can brush them off, and that it never discouraged her from continuing to play and record. Lastly, if this lady was my mom I'd happily accompany her to any convention, and I hope one of her sons can do the same.
Very interesting comparisons, because I personally find all three that you mentioned very soothing to listen to. Kinda like ASMR, or what I call lullaby shows. Just very relaxing, whether I'm actively watching or falling asleep to them. I'm so glad my internet travels have brought me to Gramma Shirley. She's my third favorite gramma! ;)
@@jaerivus I wanted to use the same analogy, but wasn't sure if it was appropriate since ASMR seems to be for people who are pretending the UA-camr is their significant other (or at least that's my impression of it). But we can pretend she's our grandma!✨
Satoru Iwata said himself that games, before all else, were meant to be fun, fun for everyone. Most people today yet believe video games are meant for just teenagers and kids, but watching Shirley play is really incredible. As the description said, she is the embodiment of the statement that games are for every age The tale of the Skyrim's Grandma is really stunning and beautiful. I have been spreading the word about her around my university and every one stays shocked in awe, requesting me to send them her UA-cam channell link. Of course I did, I just need to spread the joy that her stories and videos bring to so much people (me included) Congrats, my elder Dovahkiin, for making it into Elder Scrolls VI! When I get it I'll be sure to find you in Tamriel, because who wouldn't like to explore and have adventures around the world with the Grandma that the Dragons fear?
Thug Panda more specifically *male* teens, for that matter, it’s a nest of vipers out here, a shockingly toxic place, but things like this are truly heartwarming because they demonstrate that there are those bold enough to face that fire, and people help them through it.
Aw she is so sweet and an awesome human being. Forcing herself to keep playing when she’s tired, because she thinks sad children are depending on her. It sure got me to tears. I hope she has a great life still in front of her and that she finds a balance in playing and interacting.
yeah this video is so sweet, before my dad passed away, he used to play gta 5 all day, which im not sure if that was good for him, he came up with the story that he was gonna be a criminal lord and he never stopped playing that game.
I don't really know why, but as a 33 year old man, with Skyrim as one of my all time favourite games, i spent the whole video crying tears of happiness - thank you for making this video.

the fact that she calls her viewers "grandkids" i think is also part of the appeal. so many people don't have parents or grandparents that treated them kindly in their youth, and it brings a lot of us comfort to be spoken to so gently and lovingly. grandma shirley is a gem, such a beautiful hilarious soul.

Regarding two comments Shirley made;
People don't watch you because you're old :( Sure, it might be the novelty that makes them curious and brings them in, but the reason they stay is because you're a wonderful person. And you're very young at heart, in my opinion.
The comparisons to Bob Ross is because you're a positive person, and watching your videos can be very therapeutic and calming.
