My sister has a smooth collie; they are literally the most well-tempered and chill dogs ever. She's very quiet and minds her own business to the point that we sometimes forget that she's even around. However, when you run around and rile her up, she can be very playful!
So sweet. We lost our sable smooth collie to old age in September. Our old rough collie is still with us, but is slowing WAY down. Tomorrow we are bringing home our 10 week old sable smooth puppy!!!! We are BEYOND excited!!!!!
Smooth Collies are such nice dogs, and they smell like fresh laundry! My Mom's dog would always sleep on the couch and put his head right on the pillow. He was such a good boy, I miss you Tyler!
I'm crazy for collies, both rough and smooth. I cannot ignore any colley I meet, I must ask their owner if I can pet their dog. Funny thing is most of them say yes and are often quite used to getting stopped by strangers for cuddles!
I don't think they were ever common. If you breed two rough collies, they will only have rough collie pups as the short hair is the dominant gene and they don't carry it.
@@squangan thanks for answering! I've been scanning trying to decide what my future dog is. Tolerant to Canadian weather is a must. Whenever you google a dog and cold weather they always say below freezing absolutely not 😂 hard to find what is reality.
@@squangan I have a bonus question if you don't mind. My next dog I'm wanting off leash ( border collies high on that list of that reason ) are these guys good? I can't seem to find a solid answer on their natural abilities I know all dogs can be trained, but I'd love for it to be a natural instinct
@@nycas2192 all dogs shed fur year round it comes down to the amount, smooths are double coated dogs so they will have heavier shedding at season changes from spring to summer and fall to winter. Regular brushing and baths reduce this.

Why are smooth collies so rare now, I never see them. My grandad had one when I was a kid, beautiful dog

Can they tolerate cold weather ( not living outside ) but walking training etc?
Yes, we had our two smooths in northern Canada year around and they were just fine going outside in winter.
