When I was growing up in New Jersey there was a man in the neighborhood who was always out walking with his rough coat collie. He must have spent every day combing it. It always looked fantastic! I met it once or twice and it was a sweetheart.
one time while i was waiting for the bus, a lone collie came up to me and sat with me until she heard her owner whistling for her. I think maybe she had just wandered a little from her home and found me as company. It was a good morning.
I too had a tri growing up. I have also had a blue merle headed white, and 2 sables,. I currently have a female "maple" sable (more of the darker sable). I really love the tris. but as they are the recessive color, they are harder to find. My white was a surrender from a family where the wife was expecting their first child and heard that collies were bad with children. All of my collies have lived to 13+ y/o (well, Sorcha is now 11, but I'm hoping for a good few more years with her).

beautiful baby. i feel so badly that he was so scared. they seem like children, afraid of harmless things, but that fear is so real for them. hugs big boy, you did great.
I've had collie roughs for over 20 years now and I can't imagine more loyal, intelligent and sensitive (in a very good way also) dogs. I am so happy to see you work on one!
What a gorgeous and well-behaved pup, especially for his first appointment! Related - when I was a kid, I didn't know the name of the collie breed, so I used to call them Lassies instead. I kinda still do LOL.
I grew up with a rough coated collie/Shetland Sheepdog, they are the sweetest dogs you'll ever know. They are extremely intelligent and catch on to new commands and tricks in just minutes, also very energetic and are amazing at manipulating you into playing with them for hours without even realizing how long you've been at it. Seriously an amazing breed.
I’ve always had Rough Coated Collies. I’ve been using the same breeder. I’ve also rescued many. The only disagreement was when to start professional grooming. The breeder said 18 months, I chose 12 weeks. Since my dog would need to be very clean and pest free; the sooner my dog learned that weekly pro grooming was a must. He has learned this and he is now very comfortable with this routine. I brush my Collie daily, I also brush their teeth daily. My RCC’s were a natural choice when I needed a medical service dog. The breed is socially acceptable due to “Lassie’s” phenomenal PR. Because my RCC’s are highly trained, he barks only when alerting. I couldn’t ask for my most trusted companion, care giver and incredible friendship from Pilot, my current service dog and to all the late RCC Service Dogs.
My current collie comes from my sister-in-law's aunt who bred and showed roughs. She also owned a grooming salon where my SIL learned to groom. She no longer breeds/shows or grooms due to her health issues, but her dogs were always very carefully bred, and the litters had every test you can give collie pups 🙂 They started bathing at 3 months, I believe, gradually adding in other steps every other day. Since many of the pups were going to be shown, they needed to learn that whole rigmarole ASAP. My Sorcha is a pro a grooming, granted she's getting groomed by the people that first started grooming her to begin with 😄 I don't show her, she's a family dog, but everywhere we go with her people marvel at how pretty she is.
I was mentored in rescue by a guy who ran a Collie Sheltie rescue in Sacramento. I would volunteer to do mass grooming for the dogs, almost all were the Collies & Shelties, and he usually had around 10-12 of them. It was an all weekend job! He has since passed away, but his devotion to those breeds was amazing. Anyone looking to adopt a rescued Collie should seek out a breed-specific rescue.
My daughter’s dog is a rescue, he was found as a puppy 4 years ago in the Carolinas after a hurricane. He’s a big brave boy up until it rains (won’t go out to do his business if it’s raining), thunder and lightning or getting near the tub. She takes him to the groomers, he seems to forget that means a bath as he is just overjoyed to see other dogs and to say hello to all and sundry.
Collies are the biggest babies, i've seen it in real life with a tri colored boy I absolutely adored. They're complete sweethearts and so beautiful, defiantly one of my favorite breeds
My great grandfather had 14 of these dogs over the span of his lifetime. He refused to have any other dog work with him on his farm. They all lived very long and happy lives as herding cows. They are very responsive to human commands but unlike other herding dogs, have a great ability to be lazy and calm when not working. It was always exciting when he would get a puppy. The much older dog- near the end of it’s life would diligently help train the new puppy. Every old dog seemed happy to peacefully pass when the new dog was mature enough to help my grandfather, alone. Every dog was named ‘Bama. My grandfather’s last dog passed when he was 92 years old. He did not get another one because “the dog wouldn’t have anything to do when he was gone.”
One of my favourite breeds. Lassie was one of my favourite tv shows growing up so, naturally, when I got my first dog at the age of 4 (who was a sable sheltie) I had to name him Lassie. Fun Fact: the dog that played almost every version of Lassie was a boy even though the charactor was a girl🐶🐾🐾🦴
You are correct! They initially had a female collie but she blew her coat before filming began. They switched to a male they had and have stuck with males ever since.
Our dog is a colliemix, 11 years old and still hates the bath, clipping her nails but she is the sweetest, smartest dog we ever had. You are so right about gentle training, they are so sensitive .
My first dog as a kid was a collie, absolutely wonderful in every way (except the shedding part) Unfortunately the health issues are bad indeed, the collie my parents had before I was born died at 6 from cancer and the one we had when I was a kid at 9 from liver failure. Of course everything can happen even with a healthy dog but it’s still something to consider.
My family’s collie of 11 years recently passed away due to health issues. She suddenly went blind and deaf, was very unsteady on her feet when she walked (to the point she could only take a few steps at a time and hardly moved) and ate and drank almost nothing. We still don’t know what caused her decline in health but we knew she was absolutely miserable and there wasn’t anything we could do for her, so she was put down in February
@@riverstyx7251 Sorry for the loss of your collie, but you've done a great job for she lived to 11 years. I find it hard to accept the fact that a few mutts adopted from me had died at age 9. Mine just passed the 11 years 2 weeks ago and she's still going strong, albeit she has a few growths.
What a wonderful trip down memory lane! I grew up with a Husky/Collie mix who someone dumped in our neighborhood. My brother and I BEGGED our parents to keep him. Thank god they eventually let us, because for 14 years we were blessed by the sweetest, most beautiful best friend and brother. I cried an ocean when it was time to say goodbye and I still miss him. Thanks for bringing Tippy back, just a little. 💜
We have a short coated collie (thank goodness)! He's very sweet, and his hobbies include loving his stuffed animals to death and running circles around our backyard.
My grandmother used to breed these dogs but took great care to keep them genetically healthy. She trained many too and some won obedience competitions.
The actor dogs for the various Lassie programs, television and movie, were actually all males because males are easier to train. I learned that at Universal in Orlando and it's stuck in my head in the place of what I assume is useful information like birthdays and names of people I work with.
The males are larger. And Pal and his descendants were very big for Collies, larger than the "breed standard". This was a benefit for the show producers so that as the Timmy actors grew up they would not be too much larger than the dogs. But the main reason they were used was that they were trained so well.
That's hilarious. My girl Collie Lassie lookalike wouldn't even walk in a puddle if she could help it, and never rolled in dirt. It's like God gave me the perfect dog foe me. She was a little lady through and through.
Finally! I have 2 rough collies; a sable named Novalee and a tri-color named Freya. They both have completely different personalities and Nova can be a handful with her attitude but I love them with all my heart and they've been the best companions.
It really sounded like he was saying "I WON'T!", though.😂 Every time I see a Rough Collie I always think of that '90s commercial where Lassie uses the Yellow Pages to find a new family to adopt him because he's sick of saving Timmy.😭💀
Growing up my grandparents had Collie's. Rudd Weatherwax and my Grandpa were friends. My summer sidekick was a feller named Rusty. 80 lbs of Love and Mischief. Boy could he run! He lived to be 16. It's been 50 years but I still think about him everyday.
Victoria would love this channel, as someone who has read a lot about her, I can assure you that. I can see letting Disraeli on hold because you had just upload a new video. And speaking about Victoria, you might find this interesting. She left her coronation banquet early to go to give a bath to her dog, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel if I remember correctly.
@Bela Deraj Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom of Great Britain, Ireland and the territories overseas. Empress of India. Defender of the Faith. 😋😜 Good Old Victoria was a big dog lover, I think she probably owned close to a hundred all through her life and there's a lot of little stories about her and her dogs through the books and media about her.
So happy to see a rough coat collie featured. I'm the proud Mom of 3 Beautiful boy Presley, Oakley and. Bentley. And can vouch for everything said about this awesome breed.
I love Collies. My aunt had one when I was a kid, that was very sweet. She had a Sheltie at the same time and no one could convince me that the Sheltie wasn't the Collie's baby. 😁
I have a collie and a mini dachshund. The doxie is a medium hair, and his color is VERY similar to the collie. Little kids think he is the collie's puppy all the time 😄
My rough collie went to the groomer yesterday for the first time and apparently my training was effective! I practiced the blow dryer, bath, nail clipping and paw shaving and the groomer told me he was the goodest boy. She was impressed that he stayed so calm during the whole thing and I am so happy I practiced these things from a young age. He was a scaredy cat to go into the tub but he kinda relaxed after a while. So proud of him
I am proud of you!!! I love owners who condition their animals to get them used to different things they might encounter. It makes it so much easier on the groomer, the vet, you and especially the animal. They feel so much more comfortable with new experiences, because they have had some exposure to what is happening at home. Bravo. I wish more owners would do this.
Wow his before and after didn't look that different. You are absolutely right his parent is doing an awesome job with his coat!!! Love all doggos irrespective of breeds !!!💛🐾🐕🐾🧡
My uncle had several different kinds of dogs when I was a kids. One was a rough coat collie named Laddy. He was a natural with me and my sisters. Unfortunately a lady from the church came to visit when me and my 3 sisters were playing outside with Laddy. He went into protection mode and bit the lady several times. The city said my uncle had to put him down even though the lady opened the gate and entered the property whilst Laddy was barking at her. My uncle didn't have a "beware of dog" sign posted. When my uncle got a rottweiler he made sure to put up a beware of dog sign. It took a long time after losing Laddy for us to watch Lassie without crying.
I don't know why but Albie wearing the happy hoodie made me smile. They're a pretty dog before the groom, so I wonder how amazing they look afterwards. Edit: okay they look adorable afterwards
I've lived with three rough collies, all rescues, and Albie is a classic example. "I'm not scared, just concerned, apprehensive, possibly anxious, definitely questioning, a belly rub would help!"
I grew up with a devoted collie named Corky, the best dog for a kid. I now have a black and white rough collie, who is the sweetest girl in the world. She loves everyone.
My families had rough collies since maybe 2002, and you're so right about their health issues--both of our collies have had some pretty major issues. Our first dog had chronic digestive issues and needed prescription food, and our second dog has pretty bad collie eye anomaly and was at risk of going blind for a few years (she's alright now, luckily, but actually can't use her peripherals).
Thank you!! Three weeks ago I rescued a Rough-coated Collie/Border Collie mix from my local shelter. 10+ y.o. Deaf, nearly blind, severely arthritic. EXTREMELY gentle sweet girl. She is my 4th RCC along with the 4 BCs I have rescued over the years. She was a stray when found, but her severe flinching when you go to pet her makes me think she was mistreated and dumped in the country. She will have a great home here with me, my Red Merle BC and my rescue cat. The shelter vet shaved her badly matted fur, but it looks like she was shaved by his three year old child! Fortunately, fur grows back. Both dogs get professionally groomed in 2 more weeks. Thanks GWtD for featuring this regal breed today!!!
This dog reminds me so much of our Sheltie, Duffy. We had to put him down 1 year ago in Jan. I still miss him so much. He was such a beautiful and good natured dog. He was a big Sheltie, and was frequently mistaken for a Collie. He was funny too, he made us laugh a lot. Best dog ever.
I think you bring out the best in the dogs you groom. I know it must take an unbelievable amount of patience and time. Thank you for also sharing when the dogs owner spends a great deal of their time grooming their own pet. Also, thank for not calling out pet parents who struggle with grooming.
I have had four collies three of them have been males. I have one little girl who loves the bath and considers it her spa time, the boys on the other hand it’s off fight to get them into and out of the tub that they only get a once a year bath. Never mind brushings in which each of my boys needed to be muzzled. Love the breed and now I have a better idea for brushes

I had a tri-color and she was the bestest girl ever. Smart, kind, and so eager to please. RIP Sammie.
@@DragynGirl - Aren't they just the loveliest souls? They are great with children! My Sammie was my growing up pal. She's been gone 45 years and I still miss her. Sorcha has a long time yet.
@@DragynGirl I wonder who told that women that Collies were bad with children? Collies love children! I can attest to that having grown up with them and watching them interact with my grandnieces. I am glad that your white has a good home. On the other hand, it is too bad that baby will miss out on the wonderful experience of growing up with a Collie.
So right about these dogs being sensitive. My dude was a really sensitive guy and very musically inclined. He loved Saint Saens, Liszt, and Drake 😌
Is that him in your picture? He’s gorgeous!
My collie sings along to Adele

beautiful baby.
i feel so badly that he was so scared.
they seem like children, afraid of harmless things, but that fear is so real for them.
hugs big boy, you did great.
Our collie is not a fan of baths either, I don’t blame him. 10/10 good, soft boi though. More vocal than any husky or malamute I’ve ever met.
Do you use a "happy hoodie" ?
I've had collie roughs for over 20 years now and I can't imagine more loyal, intelligent and sensitive (in a very good way also) dogs. I am so happy to see you work on one!
Same!!❤
Can you send that intelligence over to our collie? He seems a little dim.
What a gorgeous and well-behaved pup, especially for his first appointment! Related - when I was a kid, I didn't know the name of the collie breed, so I used to call them Lassies instead. I kinda still do LOL.
Me, sister, and brother does the same thing 🤣I'm glad to now know their actual name
Everytime I see one of them, my brain goes "Lassie!!!"
@@regularity2556 Same! I know they're a collie but Lassie made them iconic.
People in my country refer to the breed as Lassie. I'm surprised my dog hasn't started to turn her head when she hears "Lassie"
Same lol still call em’ “a lassie dog”. Same with “little mermaid dog”
I absolutely love the interesting facts on the dogs you clean and groom.
Same. So useful and interesting 👌🏾
Me too!!
Same, they're the icing on the cake
These ones are very important about this bread. With Vanessa's videos get relaxation, entertainment, enjoyment, and an education.
I will always immediately stop whatever video I'm currently watching to watch these ones. They're a brief oasis of peace and joy.
This is such a tribute to the owner, I'm sure this was wonderful getting to work on a dog who is maintained.
Albie was handsome when he arrived, but stunning by the time you were finished grooming him!💗
I was mentored in rescue by a guy who ran a Collie Sheltie rescue in Sacramento.
Expectation: I’m a super brave dog who’ll rescue my human from a fire any day of the week.
Reality: Noooo not the bathtub anything but the bathtub!
All heroes have a weakness. 😆
@@MM-kd3cb He's got a reason to not like the storms IMO... but glad he's happy
Well he said he’ll rescue you from a fire, not from a bathtub
Collies are the biggest babies, i've seen it in real life with a tri colored boy I absolutely adored. They're complete sweethearts and so beautiful, defiantly one of my favorite breeds
As a proud owner of a rough collie, I can confirm they indeed hate baths, but will tolerate them for you (and treats, of course)
Yes, I agree anything for their human and of course treats!
When the dog is so adamant about not getting in the bath that the groomer herself has to get in to coax them in, gotta appreciate the dedication 💖
My dad used to own a Collie when he was young. "Best dog ever", he always says fondly about him.
Your patience getting him into the bathtub is respectable, you're an awesome groomer
Correct, lord knows how many times the kid said "Come here girl!" I thought he was, but later found out.
How did they hide dogs boy parts?

You are correct! They initially had a female collie but she blew her coat before filming began. They switched to a male they had and have stuck with males ever since.
Our dog is a colliemix, 11 years old and still hates the bath, clipping her nails but she is the sweetest, smartest dog we ever had. You are so right about gentle training, they are so sensitive .
I love how she gives backgrounds on whatever breed of dog it is.
Poor baby was so anxious but so well behaved! What a good boy.
My first dog as a kid was a collie, absolutely wonderful in every way (except the shedding part)
Unfortunately the health issues are bad indeed, the collie my parents had before I was born died at 6 from cancer and the one we had when I was a kid at 9 from liver failure. Of course everything can happen even with a healthy dog but it’s still something to consider.
I do not understand why our mongrels often live two decades while all the pure breeds are dropping like flies?
My family’s collie of 11 years recently passed away due to health issues. She suddenly went blind and deaf, was very unsteady on her feet when she walked (to the point she could only take a few steps at a time and hardly moved) and ate and drank almost nothing. We still don’t know what caused her decline in health but we knew she was absolutely miserable and there wasn’t anything we could do for her, so she was put down in February
@@riverstyx7251 I'm sorry for your loss.
It's sad that such beautiful, sweet dogs have suffered from poor breeding practices.
We used to have a collie, and it was one of the absolute best dogs I ever had! Miss her every day 😢
Albie is a well cared for and loved dog - he looks so handsome after his 1st groom! And Jimmy is adorable!
I love Collies & Shelties. Very smart sweet dogs
The females train you! Can confirm this. They are the bestest dogs ever, though. Even if they eat half your shoe and chew up all your stuffed animals.
I had always heard they used males because they looked s,bigger, stronger and had thicker coats.
Props to that owner for doing so well at home, and also for raising such a trusting calm dog.
I grew up with rough collie, he was the goodest boy. He loved grooming, he also loved rolling in the mud right after grooming :) I miss my Ben ❤️
That's hilarious. My girl Collie Lassie lookalike wouldn't even walk in a puddle if she could help it, and never rolled in dirt. It's like God gave me the perfect dog foe me. She was a little lady through and through.
Beautiful boy! Best dog we ever had was a collie mix. Smart, sweet, protective of kids. And terrified of water to the point of hyperventilating!
He's beautiful!!
The whine, the wimper, the groan... 🙂 100% Collie... it brings back many happy memories for me.
Finally! I have 2 rough collies; a sable named Novalee and a tri-color named Freya. They both have completely different personalities and Nova can be a handful with her attitude but I love them with all my heart and they've been the best companions.
It really sounded like he was saying
"I WON'T!", though.😂
Every time I see a Rough Collie I always think of that '90s commercial where Lassie uses the Yellow Pages to find a new family to adopt him because he's sick of saving Timmy.😭💀
Is there a link on UA-cam?
“Lassie Come Home” is one of my favorite books, and the original movie is wonderful-featuring a young a stunning Elizabeth Taylor.
Wow! Rudd Weatherwax, who trained Lassie and many other showbiz animals!
The owner feels all kinds of pride hearing her praise their upkeep of their pet
Victoria would love this channel, as someone who has read a lot about her, I can assure you that. I can see letting Disraeli on hold because you had just upload a new video.
And speaking about Victoria, you might find this interesting. She left her coronation banquet early to go to give a bath to her dog, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel if I remember correctly.
Yup! I think that was Dash who is buried on the grounds at Windsor (I think).
@Bela Deraj Queen Victoria.
@Bela Deraj Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom of Great Britain, Ireland and the territories overseas. Empress of India. Defender of the Faith. 😋😜
Good Old Victoria was a big dog lover, I think she probably owned close to a hundred all through her life and there's a lot of little stories about her and her dogs through the books and media about her.
I took care of a shorthaired collie when I was hospitalized, and the character that dog had was amazing. They are beautiful, cute and sweet dogs.
Well 'Albie' damned, that is one well behaved pup!
What a beautiful fluffy boy 🥰 Might’ve been a bit nervous at the start but then he was so well-behaved for the rest.
So happy to see a rough coat collie featured. I'm the proud Mom of 3 Beautiful boy Presley, Oakley and. Bentley. And can vouch for everything said about this awesome breed.
Hi Vanessa! Albie is gorgeous and you did a sensitive job for him. Woof! 🥰
He had very expressive eyes, the "poor" boy 🤭. He looked great when you were done! 🧡
Albie actually did get over his fear!! I’m so proud!
He's so adorable.😍
Growing up I had a neighbor with a collie. He always knew where his kids were.
We had a collie we were both a few months old and we grew up together. Candy passed away at 16 yrs old. Still think fondly of him.
Oh what a darling boy! He was so well-behaved even though he was so nervous. A very sweet doggo. 💋
I love Collies. My aunt had one when I was a kid, that was very sweet. She had a Sheltie at the same time and no one could convince me that the Sheltie wasn't the Collie's baby. 😁
Shelties and collies are such wonderful dogs!
My Alma Mater has a rough coat collie.... Reveille! She's a well maintained lady and always does well in a crowd.
I've lived with three rough collies, all rescues, and Albie is a classic example. "I'm not scared, just concerned, apprehensive, possibly anxious, definitely questioning, a belly rub would help!"
"a belly rub would help"
I think that's most dogs I've met. They pretty universally like belly rubs.
Belly rubs fix all my collie's problems!
Elbie was a little nervous at times but did his part well enough for a first timer. Good for him!
Albie was so adorable. Loved his talkative attitude! Little Jimmy was super cute. Very handsome.❤️
I grew up with a devoted collie named Corky, the best dog for a kid. I now have a black and white rough collie, who is the sweetest girl in the world. She loves everyone.
Love your channel 😍. Thank you for helping me take better care of the pets in my life

Elby was loving that face wash!
I had one when i was a kid! Best dog i ever had, the sweetest dog i ever had. I miss him everyday, even after so many years.
Very well behaved for being his first professional grooming.
The whining at the start was so cute and then he turned so sweet 😍. As always, love the educational information you provide!
Aww. I just adopted a havanese puppy this week. He is moving in in june and the havanese dog featured just melted my hearth.
My Sister had a minuture collie growing up, from what I could tell she was exactly like albie just a smaller package.
What a difference after the wash, beautiful dog!
Sometimes those are called a Shelty.
@@wayneessar7489 shelties are their own breed, however lots of people mistakenly call them miniature collies since they basically look like that's what they are (I own a sheltie myself).
@@Dnordsmark I was always told it was a Miniature collie and had heard of sheltie's, thought they were 2 different breeds. I will yield to the ones with more experience in this breed but the dogs behavior was the same as a collie.
@@TheWabbit I don't think "miniature collie" is a recognised breed, so in most cases it's just people unknowingly calling shelties miniature collie. That being said, someone could breed miniature collies as their own breed without it being recognised by, say, AKC. I'd say it's more likely your sister had a sheltie, though :)
@@Dnordsmark My neighbor had one and she was a great Dog!

Havanese with a handsome grooming. Lots of lassie’s when I was young, very popular breed.
