July 3rd, 2024 Flooding Winona, MN to La Crosse, WI 4k

Mississippi River cresting with very high levels especially for July! Campgrounds closed due to flooding, roads under water, houses are flooding. Very unusual for July when water levels are usually much much lower.

My wife and I stayed at the Trempeleau Inn on the River about 15 years ago. Great location for watching the Mississippi River and its barge traffic and for railfanning the busy BNSF. I remember having a discussion with the lock keeper at Lock 6 about the relevant economics of moving grain from Winona southwards by barge (his favorite) or by unit train (my favorite) - we agreed to disagree! Further downriver, Fort Madison, Iowa is also a great spot.

Almost bought a house in La crosse , if your in the valley you really want to live on the high ground .🎉
