IMPORTANT: There has been a lot of rightful criticism of this video, and I decided that the best way to address them at this point is a follow-up video to this one concerning its many problems, rather than typing out a long response to each comment. I will be posting it soon, probably next week. Until then, here are a few corrections and clarifications I had already written:
1- My use of the phrase "SteelWool era" was not to put all the blame on SteelWool for how the new games have come out, but to indicate which games introduce a clear separation between what I describe as "old FNAF" and new "FNAF", that is, games developed by Scott and by SteelWool respectively. As we know from several interviews with Scott, he is just as much to blame, if not more, for the new games' story-related issues. He had to communicate his vision for the games more clearly to SteelWool.
2- I know I must have undoubtedly gotten some things wrong, but I should point out that I also deliberately ignored some of the canon lore such as FNAF 4 being retconned as some illusion disc experiment instead of a nightmare realm. The reason I've done that is because the retcon is a) dumb and bad, and b) downright disrespectful to what I believe the original vision for the game was, which fits better with the series' narrative.
3- I've skipped UCN even though it would've perfectly fit the video as yet another depiction of hell/purgatory in the franchise and also from a new perspective yet again (that of the killer being punished by his victim). I omitted it because the video was already long enough and I don't think it's as important as the others. A complete narrative is formed with or without it. The difference it introduces is that the killer gets sent to a different kind of hell, and one of the kids refuses to rest because of their lust for revenge. Everything is still resolved as it was at the end of FNAF 6, but just in an even more bitter way. The rest of the game does not offer much to talk about for the purposes of this video either, so that's really all I have to say about it here.

My main issue with this video is the belief that dream theory was retconned. I hopes you weren't one of those Game Theory speaks the Bible fans, but...
For god sake... If you actually believe that this was ever cannon, then you don't deserve to complain about the newer games. Because your belief of the old games is flawed.
Not that I'm saying the new games are anything but slop...

@longfishy I have been asking this to other people on the comment section and I couldn't get a concrete answer yet. Can you actually elaborate on what I got wrong about dream theory? I have seen like maybe 10 of the GT fnaf vids out of the 100 they made. I'm not taking their word as that of a god. I'm going off of Scott's hints that I showed on the screen and the minigames in 4, which I can only interpret as evidence for the dream theory. I believe that it is then decanonized, because fnaf 6 exists. That is my basic thought process which may happen to align with MatPat's.
I'm open to corrections like I said above. If you can explain why I'm wrong, I'll add it to the list.

@@SarpSpeaksSometimes Okay, I'll cover the logic first and then the evidence you are saying. It might be long though.
Okay, first of all, dream theory has no logic. None whatsoever. The fact that David can dream up the locations and animatronics, sure. FNaF 3 he shouldn't have really been able to, but let's just say it's because it's a scary setting. However, he shouldn't be able to listen to phone calls that are private and he would never have been around, for example the spring lock training tape, especially since he doesn't know how they work. And then, the FNaF 2 and 1 calls take place in the future, covering events like the MCI, Bite of 87, DCI and numerous investigations that only started after the MCI. So unless David could see the future, Dream Theory is impossible.
However, for the evidence, the day's mini games and 'hints.' For the day mini games, the only notable dream moments are when David sees Plushtrap, and the toys. Plushtrap was likely something Fazbear made to make their brutal springlock system seem less scary to kids, so Springtrap being based off of him doesn't really hold much water. The toys again are something that Fazbear made for the time, and in fact the Toy Animatronics are actually based on the toys of the original animatronics, which I think we learn in AR. So the day mini games don't help much.
The hints are based on the day's mini games, so they aren't really much different. The 'missing beak' is just to get you to realise the connection between the toys, with mangle being the more obvious toy. The 'shadows' one is just to show that David saw William helping the employee and thought that it was malicious due to the rumours going around, likely due to other kids misunderstanding the spring locks, or making fun of David's nightmares. The 'four games, one story' is trying to show that this story is primarily about the Aftons, as an Afton is present in every game but the murders are only present in 1 and 2. Also FNaF 4 was supposed to be the last game, so it makes sense to round it all off like that.
But then the community took it as 'oh it was all a dream because of the clock' which was just Scott including a creepy noise to signal the end of the night, and he had to retcon the Good Ending and delay Happiest Day till FNaF 6, because he needed to make SL to prove the community wrong.
A shame that the fans accused Scott of bad writing, but I'm glad we made Dream Theory because without it we might not have gotten 5 and 6.

@longfishyThank you for your elaborate response. Sorry I took so long to answer. I know I had promised to add it as another bullet point on the list above but at this point I believe a follow-up video will be better to address all the criticisms and corrections I have received for this video. What I believe made old FNAF so good was its atmosphere. Old FNAF had that scary angst, claustrophobia, dark corridors, feeling of dread and being locked alone on same spot in a room. You could've seen old FNAF videos and animations (they were scary as well) and both them and games were somehow realistic.
While new FNAF looks too cartoony and kid-friendly, "sci-fiy", it's too big and doesn't have that old angst anymore.

    • @SarpSpeaksSometimes
      @SarpSpeaksSometimes  4 дні тому +5

Oh yeah 100%, while I didn't focus on it in this video I can tell that the lack of that atmosphere is definitely felt through and through in the newer games. What's really disappointing is that I feel the existing colorful and kid-friendly one could've been welcome as well still, if we also got to see it punctuated with a darker side of itself more frequently and effectively. We had never really gotten to be in any of the locations during the day when it's all happy and kid friendly unless you count the fnaf 6 tycoon. We could've gotten this neat duality with Security Breach where there's the bright neon pizzaplex with all these activities like fazerblast, and then the horror begins when the lights go out or you enter its underbelly. I feel like this was exactly what they were trying to go for, but both sides of that duality were severely underwhelming, not even just the horror one.

Okay, the animatronics in fnaf 1-3 aren't "dumb", they only get fooled by the mask and audio sounds due to their programming. This is mentioned in the calls. I also think to an extent the spirits aren't fully in control of their prisons. I think they physically have to fight back against the suit, and they only get anywhere because of their anger. This is why they progressively become more active, this is why the kill times for the withereds get shortened, this is why the audio lures don't work 100% of the time on night 6 and agressive, they're fighting back against the suits. The sister location animatronics are signifiantly more agressive due to all their torment. I think elizabeth is stronger because she is angerier, she has tried to escape before, the more time passes, the more she wishes for escape.

    • @SarpSpeaksSometimes
      @SarpSpeaksSometimes  2 дні тому +2

Okay, you actually make a great point. Thank you for recontextualizing their activity like that. It's actually a great way to tie the gameplay and story together. I thought the springlock suits had no programming tough, and the withereds specifically were only moving because of the souls and were otherwise deactivated.
Also, I wasn't really calling out their intellect as much as I was calling out their senses. I kind of liked to think of the earlier animatronics as practically hunched grandpas with severe cataracts and hearing impairment until they can actually get their hands on you despite all that, lol. Your explanation makes much more sense though

    • @1987nightrap
      @1987nightrap 2 дні тому +1

@SarpSpeaksSometimes in the original it was said they were never given a proper night mode, it's likely to assume that's why they only seem active at night. The spirits are able to control them better at night due to the lack of safety precautions, yet due to the spirits activating the animatronics, they also activate code that prevents them from doing certain things. We don't know much about the springlock suits, I like to assume that they are the fully animatronic, and they simply "expand" for when they are worn, but we don't have like an image, so we can really only go off of the phone calls in fnaf 3, and the little we get in fnaf sl, we could also take what we get from the books (if you believe the books work in the story, personally I don't)

I have never really interacted with FNAF as a franchise apart from seeing the "Haha Bite of '87" or "Purple Guy" memes, and was skeptical of the value of the series as a piece of art, but the Happiest Day and the Good Ending part of this video made me feel things. Such a shame seeing the loss of the vision in the series, and the direction it has been taken in. Thank you for this video, even for someone completely outside of the fandom, it was a really enjoyable watch.

For the question, I just figured that fnaf is about animatronics with kids possessing them, but the term "murder robots" sat well with me since FNAF was basically THE mascot horror. (And even though I say that, I was obviously also obsessed as a kid with the story behind the five missing children, golden freddy, and purple guy.) But I am just now realizing that "Murder robots" is actually what modern FNAF is all about, not the "original series". I know that it was Scotts plan for the first game to be about scary Chuck e Cheese esque robots to come after you at night, but the part that I was scared of (tbh the jumpscares never scared me) was the mystery, and therefore the unknown. Thats what the games were about, not just some spooky robots but the newspaper clippings and the weird sudden lore drops that made your skin crawl (the minigames legit scared me) and the idea of the unknown horror that was really going on. The end of the video sat really well with me, and as someone who has grown up with the games, I have noticed the seriousness level drop way down. Its like you can't talk about the game anymore, because youre just weird and Matpat got it right already. But yeah then we get to the new games, and its just random things happening for the sake of "Looks like its not over yet!" Ive been talking with my friend about how mascot horror (and heck, content in general) has just devolved into "lets just see what we can fill the audience up with, so they come back again and again and again" when people would enjoy things a lot more if they just made up a story. So now we come back full circle, and yeah FNAF is about murder robots (now) and the next sci fi twist they can throw in, with a sprinkle of lore just hinting the next game. buff helpy teehee

I may edit this as I go further into the video, but to the first question, I would say that FNaF (up to UCN in all media at the time) was about the unfair. The children died, and yet they lived on confused. William Afton was killed, but he didn't go to hell. He kept coming back, and he kept healing a wound by wounding others. Henry killed them all, but in doing so he also killed the last man (himself if we don't think about theory-fodder) who could tell the childrens story and villify Afton as he deserved.
FNaF isn't fair. It's not about peace, it's not about love. It's about life not being fair, and about how it all ends just as it begins.
Editing this in finally, I think the takeaway here is essentially FNaF 3 was the book end. It was what FNaF and the fans deserved.
FNAF 4 was the epilogue, it had people excited for the future, but those of us who were concerned also didn't have many justifications outside of a feeling.
FNaF SL was 'the sequel' as it were. It was good, in the same way something like It 2016 is good compared to the original It movie.
And FNaF 6 was the giant clown spider with epic music. The Infinity War of the series. Good, but not as good as the original ending, and in a very different way at that.

You forget that Scrap Baby wasn't fooled by a mere audio lure. It was a device that actually simulated a child, even emitting heat that simulates the body temperature of a human. Since Baby is programmed to capture children, she was lured by it. (If you remember the blueprints from FNAF 6, it's the one that says RASC, or Remote Activated Simulated C.)

    • @SarpSpeaksSometimes

For me, FNAF 1 felt pretty terrifying, with its small office giving a claustrophobic feeling, and the animatronics starting to walk off the stage and go to different areas of the pizza place where they usually stayed, like statues, and stare right at you through the cameras like they know you are watching them. The strange noises of pots and pans being knocked over in the kitchen made you wonder who was making the noise, but you tried to ignore it. All of a sudden, you heard this weird, joyful carnival music playing in the background, making you feel uncomfortable, but you had to be as brave as possible and watch the cameras. While looking at the cameras, you noticed some of the kids' drawings had been replaced with a weird drawing of a pale head with creepy, sunken eyes and tears running down its face, or the writings on the walls saying "it's me" in black ink. It made you even more uncomfortable and wanting to end this night shift.

Something about Security Breach…it just doesn’t feel right. Looking at images of it compared to the older games just make me sad cause it feels like the thing that has made FNaF unique has been lost. We’ve gone from being trapped in a small office in an atmospheric, run down Pizzeria in the 90s, to running around some high tech, brightly coloured mall with advanced robots…I dunno, it saddens me. Security Breach just feels like adding lore just for the fun of it

It's not like there is nothing to appreciate in the new games at all. Glamrock Freddy and DJ Music Man come to mind for me from SB. Some of the minigames in Help Wanted 1 & 2 seem pretty unique and fun as well, but they're just a few good things sprinkled over slurry of "You thought it was X, but it was me, Y!" moments that feel absolutely purposeless. I may occasionally enjoy a "terrible job supershite" meme and that's it; the games just fail to make me care anymore.

Well, if you go chronologically by the video, then yes, I agree that Fnaf could have ended on the third part.
As for part 4, we didn't know yet (most people didn't think so back then) that that child was the purple guy's son, so the question is how the plot of Fnaf 4 relates to the rest of the story. And...Scott simply gave those same infamous clues that were more likely to confuse fans than help, and then the infamous Dream Theory appeared.
As for Elizabeth being killed, then...I myself don't believe that she could have died before the events of the minigames from Fnaf 4...and I think that in Baby it's a mixture of a more developed robot AI and the soul of a child.
As for the true ending of FFPS, then yes, the focus is shifted to the Aftons, although it started after part 4...But as for The Happiest Day, the ending is good, but unfortunately or fortunately it is not a canonical ending (especially for Fnaf 3).
As for Fnaf VHS, ohhhhh...yes, they have more fear, tension and horror than Scott's games, BUT this is all just an interpretation of the plot from fans and should not be seriously compared with official products (there are just people who compare modern FNAF, showing how not scary, cute it is, etc., and then show FNAF VHS, thus saying that fans do it better, and in general this is what FNAF used to be, ALTHOUGH THIS IS NOT SO).
As for what modern fnaf is like, the answer is simple - these are the consequences. The consequences of the resumption of Fazbear Entertainment, the consequences of trying to hide the company's terrible past, the consequences of using AI, the consequences of hiding current incidents, the consequences of negligence in many ways, etc.
They have sad moments, but they are not about possessed robots, but about robots with personalities and people associated with them (for example, Roxy and Cassie).
There are fan games based on SB but there are not many of them, and...the games themselves (SB and Ruin) are big and "completed" to do something on such a large scale...and their concepts are very well developed, unlike the old parts (1-6), I would be glad to see (or would make myself) a fan game based on FNAF 3 and improve it and make it a more "real" horror attraction. And... there are more mods for SB than fan games.
And...don't forget about the books...yes, no matter how much people like them, today they are as important as the games. And they are bloodier and more brutal than ALL the official parts of FNAF. They also have many touching stories that can make some (by themselves) cry.
But it's still your right whether you like the new FNAF or not, the main thing is that it doesn't go as far as insulting others in the interests (this is said NOT only to the author of the video, but to everyone else)!
(yes...my English is bad, but I hope everyone will still understand me😅)

I always had this perfect image of scott being a "master writer" even after security breach came out; that everything being put in the games connects together somehow and we just need to figure out how. When ruin came out that image completely SHATTERED for me. The way they retconed burntrap as being the mimic showed how they made it up. And don't even get me started on how they used a book Character (the mimic) to cover themselves! Meaning tales of the pizzaplex is canon to the games AND the fazbear frights since tales of the pizzaplex and fazbear frights connect (at least it was hinted so.) It broke the lore in half. I still fellow the story but not because of the same reasons i did pre-security breach; before for the interesting story - now to see how badly they will butcher it with their next game.

You nailed it on the head for why modern era fnaf blows. There is no clear thru line, no indication as to what is important for fans to pay attention to, and NO subtlety. Everything is spectacle and the lack of cohesion makes me fucking sick. These games aren’t tense, emotionally driven mysteries that take the form of horror games anymore, they’re bloated, shiny, easter egg hunts that are products of miscommunication and too much experimentation that strays too far from the heart of the franchise. I wish the story could’ve just stayed in stone after UCN but every new game or fnaf related release puts entire chunks of accepted lore into question over and over again. I don’t care about Andrew, mexis, glitchtrap, the mimic, elanor, fetch, Edwin Murray, Vanessa, Gregory, any of the glamrocks, just anything that that comes from the pizzaplex fucks everything that came before it so bad.

I disagree, since I did care about characters like Glamrock Freddy, Roxy and Cassie.

Yes, i'm invested in the new storyline. Yes, you can actually not like that much the old story, so i joined only after SB.
It is obvious that in the new storyline The Mimic is the one who we are trying to stop. The only reason why it was botched at the start, is because Scott and Steel Wool had a BIG miscommunication, so in SB Steel Wool were guessing what Scott wanted the story to be, and they guessed wrong. Fortunately, all the later stuff course corrected it.
"What is Five Nights at Freddy's about?"
Well, right now it's about animatronics. They are the highlight of all the newer games. Hence why Glamrocks are so popular. If you don't see their stories/don't want to see their stories as something that you can "shed a tear" on... well, what can i say, each to each own. And no, your "younger audience" argument doesn't work that well with me.
    "Why should we care?"
If you don't like the course of the new story, then ofcourse you won't care. But why try to put it in a way "NOBODY CARES" when it's obviously because of Your disinterest?
Btw, taking reactions of different people to FNAF trailers seems quite disingenuous. You can do this with every media to "prove" something.
Hope i talked about most of the important points mentioned, without appearing aggressive or something.

No, no. Thank you for the thoughtful criticism. You have some valid points. I want to start with a clarification on what I was trying to do with this video. It wasn't really meant to be a fact-based rebuttal but more of an opinion piece based on my own emotions and interests. Yes, you are correct in saying that it's due to my own disinterest that I'm no longer invested in the newer games, and this video wasn't meant to mask that, but to clarify why I'm disinterested. I agree that I could've made it more in-line with that at some points, like saying "Why should *I* care" instead of "Why should *we* care", and this is admittedly at its worst with the main point of the video that "fnaf isn't about anything anymore".
The thing is, "fnaf doesn't have anything I find meaningful in it anymore" doesn't really have the same weight, nor does the title "What I cared about in old fnaf doesn't exist in new fnaf". Because I often feel that it's already implied I'm just sharing an opinion, I try to make the videos more engaging by sacrificing some of that clarification. But it's true that I fail to strike that balance sometimes, and things become too emotionally charged. You are completely right about your "younger audience" comment. Yes, I don't care much for the glamrocks and I do think that they're made to appeal to a younger audience as well as many other things in SB and Ruin, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with anyone outside of that audience enjoying it either. I enjoy a lot of things like that too, and I shouldn't have been so hostile and belittling with my words in that section. Again, I hope I'll get better at this with time, because there is absolutely a right way to put powerful emotions behind your words without losing yourself in them and staying on the more intellectual side. Jacob Geller comes to mind as someone that does this well.
I will defend myself against one point you raised though. I was not trying to use anyone's reactions to prove a point I wanted to make. At the start, I used Markiplier, Jacksepticeye and Phisnom's clips where they reacted to Security Breach breaking itself not to go "look, these people agree that I'm right about these games" but to go "I more often see people focusing on how broken these games are on a technical level, such as these instances, but I want to focus on something different". It was more to highlight what I *don't* think are the game's biggest issues.
And at the end, I showed reactions of DarylTalksGames, Maximilian Dood, Angry Joe Show and oboeshoesgames not to go "See, they also think it's pointless", but to go "These people make fun of or laugh at FNAF on the first second of a trailer thinking it has nothing worth to experience, which is wrong, but the game would sadly prove them right if they played it and that's what upsets me."
The point you raised about Scott and SteelWool's miscommunication is entirely correct, and I tried to address that in the pinned comment because I definitely gave off the wrong idea in the video. The "Scott Era" and "SteelWool Era" were phrases I came up with to specify the timeframes, not to introduce scapegoats. HW 1, SB, Ruin and HW 2 are SteelWool games so called them the SteelWool era. It was not my intention to put all the blame on SteelWool for how I feel about the new games. I know Scott f'ed up big time there and it wasn't my intent to act as if he was this perfect GOAT while SteelWool are all talentless hacks. But yes, this was not communicated well in the video at all and I did realize it before uploading the thing, but I was honestly just kind of burnt out and got lazy so I just clarified it in a pinned comment which can easily be missed. I have no excuse for that and I have to do better next time.
I want to say one last thing, but more as a general sentiment. I genuinely don't enjoy being this negative in my videos. I more often make vids on things that I love and think people should check out, not dunking on things that others enjoy. Even in this video, I tried to spend more time discussing why I love the old games so much rather than why I don't like the new games so much. I am bitter about the new direction of the series, but it didn't need to come off as hostility to its fans. I really don't have a personal vendetta against any dev or fan of this new era, and I'm happy that you were able to find something that gripped you where I couldn't. Thank you for watching.

Thank you for a very elaborate answer!
The only thing i can add a little bit more, is that while SB has a vibe of being bright and feel light hearted, it's actually still has a very dark and tragic story. I sometimes see comments that say "fnaf lost it's horror" and i'm not gonna deny that SB is not a horror, but mostly a thriller (which is why Ruin was made more darker and atmospheric in that regard, after feedback). But the bright colors of SB go very well with the whole facade that Fazbear Entertainment holds in the Steel Wool era. It's kind of like a wrap to hide all the worst stuff imaginable. And this is where the Glamrocks are coming in. While there is a lot of tragedies that happen with humans, Glams are still in the center and their lives are the epitome of horror for this era. Since they are sentient AI, they feel like humans, so it becomes quite easy to connect to them.
Steel Wool era is maybe a different story from the old one, but it's still a story. So i'm mostly kinda just feel sad that you can't enjoy it and that's it.

They should of kept fnaf 1-3 the same, and had fnaf 4 and sl be “spin offs” not following the main story, have the mci Charlie and aftons story end in fnaf 3 and have a new villain with the “afton era” with him and Elizabeth being the main villains. Just switch up some stuff from 4 and sl and I would work, then have baby be the main villain for a couple games until we get a copy cat killer

I do agree that happyest Day is a better ending then fnaf 6 But they are two different ending's for two different things. happyest Day is the ending for the missing kids, fnaf 6 is the ending to stop it from happening again. That is atlist how i see it, But i may have explaind it badly

No, I understand where you're coming from. I did come off more bitter than I actually am for the fnaf 6 ending in the video mostly because of how often it is regarded as the best ending for the series when it's so visibly scott going "oh god this has gone too far fuck it just burn it burn it all down". It isn't terrible by any means, but having the fnaf 3 ending to directly compare it to doesn't really do it any favors.

The vibe of fnaf 1 is cold and dark mechanical fnaf 2 followed in its footsteps but removed some of the darkness fnaf 3 removed the darkness and coldness and gave it a more rotten stuffy vibe as the games tried to be different from eachother they just kind of fell down in the creep factor SL despite it having some jokes still kept it focused on the story and i love the vibe of it all then SB just killed everything it began with the creepy vibe is gone the darkness is gone the animatronics aren't scary infact you have one helping you and no it doesn't end like the last one that did that.. remember our "new" villain that we spent so much time setting up in HW? lets make them appear like two times in scripted events also lets bring back each character that burned in that epic finale in fnaf 6 and completely undermine the most memorable speech in the entire franchise.. yeah thats a good idea.. i just hate everything modern fnaf is cause it just feels like it shits on its 10 year legacy and i doubt its gonna get better.

Dude, you described Happiest Day in a way I could never describe. It really felt personal, like you the player were freeing the souls rather than someone in universe and you got rewarded for that in the end with the animatronics lightless heads, indicating their freedom. Pizzeria Simulator backtracked on all that in favor for making all of that worthless just to have someone else do the dirty work for you. It's not personal. It's not satisfying. It's just pathetic that Scott had to drag the old series antagonists back in just to have somewhat of a conclusion. I hate it. I've always hated it.
Nowadays, I stopped caring about the lore. It got stupid to me at Sister Location and I stopped giving a shit ever since. Now I just want to hang about to see how the games evolve and the characters each new game introduces. I'm literally done with FNaF's atrocious storytelling. It all ended at FNaF 3 for me.

Haven't even watched the video yet and I can tell you. New fnaf doesn't have any suspense or atmosphere, and it replaces those with objectively shitty stand ins until it isn't even horror anymore. Fnaf used to be about a guy who murdered children, and had the ingenious thought to hide the bodies in plain sight, but now purple guy is fucking skeletor, and he has this cockamamie scheme to rule the world or some shit. It used to be that the only unbelievable thing about fnaf was that the animatronics were haunted, but now you have all this remnant bullshit. Fnaf gets a lot better if you pretend everything past three was just a spinoff

I haven't watched the video yet, but I just wanted to say loneliness. Yes, I did steal that from that other UA-cam video. But that video is right, and loneliness is kinda important. FNAF 1-4, SL, PS, UCN, and to an extent Help wanted, all have loneliness. Security breach doesn't.
