Thank you Father. Not sure I can follow this discernment but pray for ability to do so. Feel so inadequate. Thank you and God bless.

Feeling inadequate is "the enemy" as Father Gallagher refers to negative self-defeating thoughts that may be inserted into our minds by negative entities. You can always do a lot more than you think you can. After all, he is just suggesting that we take 15 minutes a day to ponder how the day has gone. It isn't like being asked to swim the English Channel. LOL

I wonder if what Saint Ignatius referred to as Consolation versus Desolation might apply to medical mental illnesses like being bi-polar (manic-depressive), or clinical depression or generalized anxiety disorder.

Are you suggesting you could medicate spirituality? Sorry, doctor, I imagine the soul requires much more than Freud

in my opinion, consolation and desolation are like sun and rain on tbe journey (im cool countries) - in sunshine you feel happy and want to keep going, where in rain you want to give up it all and hide away.
And also, both mania and low mood are part of desolation. they both are difficult, unwanted and hopefully they both are to turn imto so.ething dofferent.

From my understanding, what Ignatius is referring to is spiritual consolation and desolation which pertains only to spiritual life. However, there is also other forms of consolation and desolation (physical, emotional, maybe mental illness). These other forms can affect our spiritual life and so are also important. I recommend listening to Fr. Gallagher's talk on the first 14 rules. He addresses it there.
