I was contemplating Ezra 1:2 this evening when my friend sent me this link. Fr. Gallagher has charged a pole, so to speak, by giving us a contrast between St.John of the Cross and St.Ignatius, two I did research. A meditative visualization aid is the idea of the facets of one eye; like a bee. Honeybees build what they see through: Hexagons. Well, when we try to make those turrets look like soft swirl ice cream, we occasionally tend to need something other than hexagons between.
This is where the Alhambra should enter our thinking. Though Hexagons are a marvelous efficient carbohydrate, the structures need to yawn and stretch; thus change is constant both in observing and being observed. Different shapes and different concepts of curves expand the ideas of the pattern.
Thus separating contemplation and meditation seems to lead always to re-combing them. The question is: Which one are you doing? Do you know? Can you know?
St. John gave me the impression that memory loss was the sign you've arrived. St. Ignatius on the other hand, gave me the impression of readiness for a barracks inspection.
But that's the part that's YOU. With so many facets, there's a template in these men that can help you to get your own lines straight, in that particular space, at that time.
Thanks for the imaginative aid Fr. Gallagher, and the low steady turbulence. Its awfully HARD to do these days...
