  • Dr. V dishes the truth on protein, carbs, and fats, and the entire macronutrient myth in the weight loss world. Especially in bariatric surgery, the misinformation surrounding how much protein a weight loss surgery patient should eat is not only absolutely ridiculous but also actually unobtainable. Chasing protein might lead to stretching out your sleeve, gastric bypass, or other surgery.

I haven't had surgery and I was debating before I started watching your various videos. I have decided not to have surgery and to concentrate on eating better. I also viewed Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. Between the two of you, I am convinced to drinking green smoothies daily. I have lost 10 pounds since I started this about a month ago.

Ive been watching you videos for quite some time now, I feel extremely lucky to you have found you. I was referred to and saw my surgeon for the first time on January 9th 2019 and just had my surgery on the 11th March 2019. I have received such minimal support and guidance. Thankfully my referring GP has been a god send and had gone through VSG surgery back in 2011 and also has Hashimotos disease like me. I really appreciate your honest, no bullshit approach to keeping us informed and Ill continue to follow you as part of your #squad for years to come. Thanyou again :D

This is great. I am 12 years post-op (bypass) and two children later I am still at a great weight....about 20 lbs higher than I prefer but my baby is only 2 months old and I’m breastfeeding. Anyways, I let my body tell me what to eat. Some days it’s chicken thighs, rice and cooked veggies and some days it’s raw veggies and fruit but mostly it’s a nice balance. Everything in moderation. Every now and then some chips and cookies if I feel like it. New subbie here.

I'm so happy to hear this. I've worked over the years to change my diet for the better, which includes plenty of fruits and veggies, lean protein, and no artificial anything. I've been working to become vegan. I'm still fat and having a gastric bypass soon, and I have been discouraged by what I've been hearing about drinking protein shakes and other things that I don't use in my diet. I worked to get all that crap out of my diet and I don't want to add it back!
I feel really encouraged seeing this video!

22 years post po- amazing Dr ..i travelled to Louisiana from SC for my distal RNY…no complications…I eat the way Dr. V says… I do not eat junk carbs and crap fat…whole healthy quality foods and my pouch is still in tact because I stuck to the small quantities. Gained some weight after my hysterectomy and knew just what to do…I am now 133 and 5 foot 5 inches. I have CPTSD from 18 years of abuse and being starved and body shamed…Ian’s developed eating disorders..I went no contact, found healing from toxicity … and learned to love my body and what it can do lean and strong. You are awesome! I hope people listen!

That makes sense what you said about the carbs being too low your weight loss stalls. when I kept my carbs between 20 and 50 g I lost the weight but it’s like my body just maintained and I stopped losing after a while. When I pushed my carbs up a little my body released the weight. I’m gonna keep in mind and try to keep my carbs between the percentage you suggested because this is a long term lifestyle

Do you have a percentage that you can remember of how many patients had thyroid issues? I am hypothyroid. I am seriously looking into the sleave. By watching your videos I feel I can start doing these dietary changes now and make my consultation with the doctor when I feel I have disciplined myself.

I am almost 9 months post GB. I started Keto month two. I have not cheated once. I am almost at my ideal weight (lost 135lbs so far). Kind of conflicted on what I am going to stay on, once i get to my ideal weight. I eat more vegetables now, then I have ever have in the past. I am leaning towards adding some more carbs (through healthy vegetables and low carb fruit, etc). But I also respect your side/still debating it.

I know this is 2 years ago, but it has been helpful.
The fact that you mentioned low carb diet aim for less than 150grams.
To hit Keto... less than 100grams. 80-100gramd.
This is probably why I always feel like I'm starving myself and why I can't stay on "track". I'm trying to have 20-25grams of carbs per day plus exercise

From what I understand (based on the conflicting information I have found), the only time it is important to cut fat and carbs is before surgery to help the liver "shrink" and immediately after because too many carbs can make you feel sick due to your stomach not being able to process them well while it is healing. But how much is too much is the real question and I assume the answer really is what your body can tolerate. Gotta tell ya, this pre-surgery diet is killing me. I have lost 28LBS in a little over 2 weeks but that is because I am eating less than 10g of carbs and fat per day and I don't see how that can be healthy.

Heather Lundquist Some women who struggle with the weight, can have issues like PCOS and can benefit from taking Metformin. Helps balance blood sugar and insulin levels which reduce over eating and extreme hunger. Some people who struggle with their weight can also have undiagnosed Adult ADHD. (Not all people with ADHD are hyperactive.) Most ADHDers actually a subtype called ‘combined’ ADD or ‘mixed’ ADD. Some are distracted, foggy, and frustrated. Vyvanse seems to help some folks.A bariatric clinic here in Toronto is diagnosing and treating people’s undiagnosed ADHD, in order to help facilitate their weight loss. I think the percentage I read was 23% of Severely Obese adults, have undiagnosed ADHD.
