Hearing this music, it makes me imagine a feeling of meeting a supreme being, but when meeting him realising that he wasn't a benevolent being in the firstplace, and was a terrifiying malicious entity beyond the wildest nightmares of the greatest creators of horror in literary history. And then being awestruck by both the majesty and fear.
@Despotic Waffle. I think you and Retro Renaissance need to drop acid together, listen to this track, and write a book about how the experience made you feel. I'd like to pre-order a copy right now.
what they do isn't really that new. it's done since the early 1900's, but they do so on a very great technical level and combine this kind of soundscaping into metal in a very unique style they got. also, their performance is absolutely amazing. so while it's not new, it's still awesome.
Lol here's a snippet on the LP from this albums release in 2008: "In the attempt to preserve the pure aesthetic of the intent of this release the album will not be available in any digital format. We have serviced a small amount of LP promos to journalists we hope will appreciate this." I guess they realized that you can't survive in the digital age without it lol.
The digitalisation of every day life brings great comforts, access to knowledge and social contacts but for a performance art show like they do, bass massage included, it isnt the optimal format, never the less im happy they made it available. Sure YT quality is nowhere near Vinyl but as .wav with decent bitrate there is just the underlying crackle of analog technology that most people wouldnt even recognize.
5:08 that's when this piece changes; at first it's a song, then it is a way of life. Loud, visceral and beautiful. "Maximum volume yields maximum results" at 6:00 the descent into yourself begins. If only this song never ended. I could listen to that last shaky note forever...
i thoroughly enjoy going to pipe organ concerts in my city whether they're normal or revolving around someone's religion. all i'm saying is that i'd lose my fucking shit if i ever got to see Sunn in a cathedral where they also happened to use the in-house pipe organ. i'm so thankful i'll finally get to see them for the first time in less than two weeks.
asyntheticsound although I knew this recording was in a church, I had no idea they actually used the pipe organ on this one. always assumed it was a keyboard. no wonder it sounds so amazing
No and no. You're really missing out if you think this horrible track is in any way representative of their work. First off, the vocals are tone deaf, histrionic, and clash badly with the tonality in the equally bland and uncharacteristic organ part, which sounds like a bad mimic of Koyaanisqatsi on an inferior instrument. My favorite Sunn O))) work sounds completely different: for example Black 1, Flight of the Behemoth, White 1 (especially My Wall with Julian Cope), ØØ Void, and Kannon is decent as well. Compare also a few of the Earth albums up on youtube, and you'll see they are better than this.
If anything is feeling supreme and terrifying, it's just you and only you.. Dare to face your deepest feelings, it will you bring closer to yourself.. It's not easy, I do know..
I tried looking for the lyrics to this song, and I couldn't find anything. I'm starting to believe Attila is just making noises. That's fine though, it still sounds really cool. The droning harpsichord made me feel like I went deaf when it ended because I wasn't used to that noise not being there by the end lol
bladesmithy 018 There's a way to get the lyrics to all Sunn O))) songs. Have a notepad ready, tie a rope around your cats neck, tape a bucket to its head, then drown it in a bathtub. Jot down any sounds that vaguely resemble words and voila!
TGS is right, its Early Modern/High Middle English. To a modern English speaker it sounds like the author might be addressing God, due to its association with the King James Bible, but that's speculation regarding the author's intent.
In case it's useful, it's a line taken from a poem by William Blake, called 'To Nobodaddy', so though the language is archaic it's actually from the Romantic era, the 18th/19th century.
People that have soul and feel the spirit of the music. Not the mind-numbing wank of musicians trying to impress with their technical skill, whilst producing a complex layered pile of turds (ie : Dream Theatre)))

Raul Rafael idk it's drone metal. I still like some of their other songs a lot better than this one. This one is simply "okay" in my own opinion. It Took the Night to Believe is probably one of my favorites by them. It's extremely dark and rather bass heavy, which is the type of stuff I enjoy in any genre of music.
i think you have to see them live to actually see what they are trying to make, and this track is a bit off so it might not be the right one to make the comment on. but still their concerts aren't expensive and of the 200 bands i've seen live this was the most staggering experience. do it, try to dive into it (bring ear plugs) and judge again

What the fuck drugs are you on?
I can't get enough of this. I wish this track lasted longer... it's weird when it ends, it must continue eternally
One of Sunn's most underrated tracks.
Yeah, i absolutely love this one
Sunn have broken down the walls of every musical convention known to man. They challenge the premise of what a song is....
what they do isn't really that new. it's done since the early 1900's, but they do so on a very great technical level and combine this kind of soundscaping into metal in a very unique style they got.

Check out an old composer named Yannis Christou. I think you'll like him

I have it on vinyl. lets just say it vibrates better.
Wasn't expecting this to be so chill. Feel genuinely blissed out by this tune on such a nice morning ☺️

I go to another place when I listen to Sunn O)))...and I like it. Sometime i don't wanna come back lol......
Mike...are you still "out there"?...
That artwork is awesome. It really captures the mystifying, obscure style of music.
It makes me think of pork rinds. And moonshine.
This song is literally everything.
And then some.
Surely you meant "metaphorically" 😶
This reminds me to some Bulgarian Orthodox Chants, you guys should give them a listen if you enjoyed this masterpiece
Bulgarian Orthodox chants use almost exactly the same techniques as Greek/Byzantine chants, so you should check these ones too.
i love the title of this song,it always provoked me a kind of intrigue that i cannot explain,it´s great
I’m at peace listening to this
Gorgeous vocals. Still my favorite Sunn album.
Eargasm.
This is like the ending of Pink Floyd's A Saucerful Of Secrets + Orthodox Chanting. Basically, awesome!
Favorite Sunn O))) track ever

Attila, you're a legend mate!
Stunning
5:10 A minor chord
Like the vocals and I like how it ends in E major
If Southern Lords is the title under which this piece was published, why the hell do they have ads enabled to run halfway through the song?
Stephen King would write good books while listening to this

wow I finally made it to the end of music. It took me years to get here, with questionable artists along the way, but here I am.
I'm sorry for my ignorance, but I'm a poor English learner and I'd like to know what's the meaning of the name of this song...
It's old english. "Why Do You Hide Yourself In Clouds?" I hope this helps!
TGS is right, its Early Modern/High Middle English. To a modern English speaker it sounds like the author might be addressing God, due to its association with the King James Bible, but that's speculation regarding the author's intent.

the easiest direct translation from olde to new english would be,”Why do you Hide Yourself in the Clouds”

10:05 *cough*?

This is a live recording
Is this song really a reenactment of Why Dost Thou Hide Thyself in Clouds from Neil Young, the soundtrack of the film Dead Man ?....
I don't think so. Both are appropriations of a William Blake poem called "To Nobodaddy".
Lo voglio come nuovo Inno Nazionale.

This can’t be serious. What musician would actually write music like this?
Life, Liberty And Justice For All I bought it on vinyl, so yeah. Some of us actually like this shit.
Good musicians who actually care about music I guess.
There's a song called "The Sound of Silence" and it's nothing. Literally nothing.

This wouldve been better without the vocals. Almost not listenable.
What? the vocals are fantastic!
I like a lot of stuff from Sunn O))), but damn this is bad. Seriously.
Because it is a bit of departure from their "Metal" genres?
That's understandable.
I don't think it's bad, but I do think it shouldn't classify as metal.
