Repurposing an Old Trampoline into a Mobile Chicken Run

  • We took our old trampoline and made a portable chicken tractor out of recycled materials we already had. This run will be a key piece of our permaculture goals in the future, as the chickens help to fertilize, spread manure, and keep the pest load down. Moving the chickens frequently is great for the land and helps to keep our chicken feed costs down.

    That is such a GREAT idea! I love repurposing things for one thing and people are always getting rid of their old trampolines for free. I live in a fire zone and have fretted since we got chickens 3 years ago what to do with them if we have to evacuate short of opening their run and hoping for the best. Lucky for us we are are able to let them free range 6-7 days a week but…….. if I can find a free trampoline in decent condition, set it up as you have done, then break it back down and pack it up in a nice tight bundle we could throw in the back of a truck we could conceivably save our chickens if time allows. We have the extra dog crates to transport our ten but the problem was always what to do with them if we got them out! Thanks for giving me a little hope 🙏💞

      What a good idea! Yes, the trampoline would be pretty easy to break down in a jiff if you took the bottom "feet" off the vertical legs and wrapped it up quickly. A great way to save your chicky friends if need be! We also love a good repurpose. :) Economical and sustainable!

    We did the same with our Tramp-o-line but our kids still use it 🙂 It works out. I like the wagon idea. Pondering that one now too.....

      That's awesome! Our neighbor kids were recently asking if they could jump on it and I wondered how the chickens would react... 😆 It's good to know yours are cool with it!

      Not really. They are used to it. I will move over to the coop pen as it is attached.

    Thats a pretty cool idea! We are in the process of repurposing and old playhouse into a chicken coop. Our predators have been a bit active around here this year too which makes it challenging.

      Definitely a challenge! We would so love to free range the girls but also want to keep them safe. The trampoline has helped a lot and I'm hoping as it warms up the trampoline shade will keep them cooler also.

      I’m curious why you don’t see more dietitians coming out against glyphosate and npk based farming.. you hear some warn of pesticides but rarely do you hear that solution is finding a good farm

    I was planning to do this, but my concern is it getting blown away in a storm. Has anybody dealt with this? Or figured out a way to weight it down but still be able to move it around?

    I was just out in the yard looking at the tall grass, clover, and dandelions under the trampoline when the same "eureka moment" came to me. Grandkids on top and chickens on the bottom. No more moving to mow!
    I was studying physics and biology when I had my first "eureka moment." That's when I discovered how easy it was to tell the difference between a female and male ant. Simply place the insect in water, if it sinks...girl ant, and if it floats....

    Why don't you free range your poor chickens and give them plenty of room?

    • @DownHomeDietitian
      @DownHomeDietitian  2 роки тому +3

      We used to free range them, but we had several killed by aerial predators. It is a constant balance with chicken ownership - free range and be willing to lose some to predators, or contain and keep them safer. Currently with the avian flu being in our area the free ranging has an extra layer of danger too, sadly. We like the option of being able to move them regularly so they can always have fresh grass and bugs and still protect them from outside predators and diseases. We also have the option to do supervised free ranging when we are outside with them. :)

      @@DownHomeDietitian I understand. A Marema Sheep dog won't let aerial predators near them. Have you seen in UA-cam? They tested with a drone, bringing it in low. The dogs went nuts.

      @@eddieandrews3854 That's great! Our doggo is actually part Maremma! We chose him for his livestock guardian instincts in hopes he would not go after our chickens, though he is not officially a livestock guardian. He is protective of them even without training!

      Those of us who really like it Flocks want to protect them. Turning them out is sometimes not an option. One neighborhood dog can go on a killing spree and wrote out a flock in no time. Not to mention hawks and foxes.
