    This series went the exact opposite way so many cocky Flames fans thought it would:
    Oilers had more depth
    Oilers had better defense (surprisingly)
    Smith outplayed Markstrom
    The "rookie" coach outcoached the "veteran" coach
    So many Calgary fans were saying they would win in 5 or less. At least they got the number of games right. Enjoy your humble pie.

      I think Oilers biggest asset was their speed. Overall, Calgary just couldn't keep up, and the Flames were overwhelmed.
      That and Flames' top defensive pairing of Hanafin and Andersson really crapped the bed. They gave up far too many odd man rushes, especially to Oilers' top lines.

    As a Habs fan I'm very happy to see the Edmonton Oilers become successful, I love it when a Canadian underdog defies all the odds considering that everyone counted them out in the beginning. McDavid's celebration and Draisaitl's ridiculous play this series is great to see.

Of course, I cheer for the Habs first and foremost but I love my country (despite our difference in language and some values), hockey is our national sport and none of our teams won the cup since 93. I also have to like the team so I will admit I don't really like the Sens. But I cheer for Canada at the Olympics and world tournaments. Tip of the hat to the Oilers. They played real well and every game they bent the Flames into playing their way. Regardless of that disallowed goal the Flames dug their grave long before this game. Sutter said it himself, games 2,4 & 5 are all tied and up for grabs in the 3rd period and it was the Oilers that got the goal when it counted in all of them. So be humble and give credit where it's due.

    Ok, so, let's take a moment to examine that OT goal, shall we?
    Nurse dumps the puck in, Hanifin gets there first and under pressure from McDavid, makes a soft pass up the board towards Gaudreau. Gaudreau sees Draisaitl also going for the puck, and then pulls up and GOES FURTHER UP THE BOARDS! As if Drai was going to just send the puck along to him. Draisaitl, now with 15 feet of uncontested ice thanks to Johnny's generosity, makes a little pass to McDavid, who skates to right between the circles and beats Markstrom cleanly on the glove side. Realistically, Markstrom probably shoulda had that one, but my goodness JOHNNY WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?!?! I know everyone but me hates +/-, but here's a fun stat for you. In the regular season Johnny Gaudreau has a career +85. In the playoffs the career number is -10. Just this season he has a +64 for the regular season and -2 in the playoffs. And this play right here is the prime example why. I get cheating a little for offense when you've got a teammate in a battle, but Johnny, you're the only guy around, you have to at least make him work a little.

    • @j.flux87
      @j.flux87 Рік тому +1

      Good analysis. I do believe as a winger it's your job to get out of the zone (with the puck) first. That was his job there - not anyone else's since the pass was already coming from the D behind the red line. As the commentary says in the replay, it's a turnover. That is what it is. Sure the centre is there to help if need be, but that implies that you are tied down yourself as a winger first - wasn't the case here; and with the centre's job occupied with Draisaitl, it gives McDavid enough time to fire off the shot from the slot.
      However, credit to Draisaitl on the play there, he was ready to battle for the puck, took it, and with relatively little room (or momentum) to manoeuvre, spins around around on the spot and gets it on the tape to McDavid. It was a crafty play by Draisaitl, let's be honest, but it was indeed first an error that led to a turnover by Gaudreau.

    • @reaganharder1480
      @reaganharder1480 Рік тому

      @@j.flux87 absolutely, Draisaitl made a good play. How he handled the situation is pretty much textbook top 6 power foward stuff. Credit to McDavid too, without his forechecking pressure Hanifin would've had time to make a cleaner pass that doesn't require a board battle to skate away with. And maybe Drai wins the battle and assist a game winner anyway, but the decision by Johnny to not engage in that board battle at all is just not what you need from a professional hockey player in the playoffs, nevermind OT of an elimination game.

    The thing about that this disallowed goal is that that puck was actually going in before Coleman touched it, all Coleman had to do is keep that player of Edmonton from knocking that puck away from going in but he tried to kick it in and Coleman was looking at the puck so the refs assume he knew where to put his foot. Coleman's left foot got around the Edmonton's players foot.

    Anyone who's actually played, and understands hockey knew the Flames had literally no chance against the Oilers in the playoffs. They over achieved all season, half their roster had career years and they had no injuries until Tanev. When the playoffs hit and the Oilers raised their game, there was no more room for the Flames overachieving players to raise any higher. They never had a chance.
    Flames fans were extremely arrogant all year making this absolute beat down that much more satisfying.
    When you think about running your mouths next year Flames fans, don't ever forget, in playoff hockey, WE OWN YOU
