Had never heard this recording. It´s fantastic. FYI, James King sang 368 performances at the Vienna State Opera in his career. DIe Frau Ohne Schatten 20 times between 1977 and 1984. Studied with him for a time at IU in Bloomington. Will never forget the first time he sang for me while playing the piano. His brilliant focused tone was so loud I wanted to get under the piano to get away from it. One hears that here too. Huge orchestra and his voice rings through everywhere with perfect diction. I remember him as a lovely, generous person and a completely focused artist whose world revolved around music. Ruhet in Frieden lieber Herr Kammersänger!

Sensational how King masters the extremely difficult monologue without vanity but a gifted voice and instinct for dramatic effect.
Whats not to like? King rips this up. 'Auf , mein Pferd, und du, Falke, voran! ' = win.
Sans mauvais jeu de mots, impérial !
No pun intended, imperial!
Ohne falsches Wortspiel: kaiserlich!
