- 1964, "Jeden heiligen Morgen schnür ich die Riemen, besteige den gewaltigen goldenen Wagen. Aufwärts geht es mit schlagenden Hufen". Dirigent: Karl Böhm. Digitally re-mastered by Dave King
Nobody, nobody in the world sings like Jimmy in this repertoire and I’m beginning to think that nobody ever will again. Wir waren so gesegnet, ihn zu haben.
I recently found this DVD at Berkshire Records in Masachusetts. I studied Wagner and Strauss in college (Fine Arts/Music). I saw the NY City Opera production of "Daphne" several years in a TERRIBLE modern staging, which is why I bought this one in order to see this piece in the ancient Greek setting, and it certainly works. The sound is pretty good, and the picture is VHS quality on this DVD. But it was certainly worth it. Any Strauss fan would do well to buy this DVD. STRAUSS RULES!!!

Glorious! Magnificent! Thank you James King for leaving us your untouchable legacy.
A pleasure to come here yet again to celebrate Mister King's birthday - May 22, 1925. The man sang like a God. Pure, unforced, lyrical. A true heldentenor.
Bravo, what a beautiful voice and what a great technique. He sure was one of the best of the best heldentenors ever!!! Bravooo!!!!
If memory serves, Strauss wrote in the score, "in gewaltig rhapsodischem Ton" or "with great rhapsodic power". The only thing you can say about this amazing clip is that this is exactly what James King provides. This is peerless singing. A special recording. Thank you so much.
verdiguy If you couldn’t tell from his writing, Strauss hated tenors.
Did he ever! It took a special tenor like King to handle roles like this and the Emperor in Frau Ohne Schatten. And then there's Herod, a fun but extremely challenging role. Matteo in Arabella is one of the most thankless roles ever written.Even his baritone roles are massively demanding, Barak, Mandryka and Jupiter all require a full range and the ability to cut through some dandy orchestration. There's also a very likely apocryphal story of his shouting at the orchestra in Elektra "Louder! I can still hear the singers!"
Terrific! By the way: This film is conducted by Keilberth and it is indeed complete. They have Fritz Wunderlich as Leukippos, Stefania Woytowicz as Daphne, Hertha Töpper as Gaea and Gottlob Frick as Peneios....
E in più era bello come un dio...
Straordinario!!!Degno proprio di un Dio👍❤
Ah du vrai tenor eblouissant et beau une voix d'une grande purete
Boy, fresh off the redigital press. Thanks. I look forward to many more.
My cat's name is Apollo. I sing this to him constantly, he loves it.
I didn't mean that the role was small to sing in it's entirety. I meant that his appearance in this video is very small and I wouldn't think they'd bother to get the whole cast together just for this one clip. So there must be more. I may be wrong though
great singing ,,,do u have his di quella pira?? i cant find it any more on youtube i think it got deleted
Wonderful !!!just that !!!
Enormous artist!!!
This is a wonderful video but I'm wondering if there's any more videos made for this performance? The fact that they even have Fritz Wunderlich in his little role here makes me think maybe so..?
I have the audio recording of this. that's widely available. King and Wunderlich are both in top form.
The King. 👑
Che cast!!
