Surely there is nothing more satisfying than a lathe. The total absorption of transforming big pieces of metal into smaller ones, followed by the horrific realisation that the workshop is completely engulfed in swarf. Great stuff Del, always look forward to watching.

But of the more recent ones. Im partial to David Tennant. But I’ve not kept up super well with all seasons. More of a if it’s on I’m glued but not a serial watcher. How do we feel about Jodie Whittaker? I’ve not seen any of her episodes yet.

I have the same FXDWG (01) with the stock spoke wheel. I have no issues what so ever with a 150mm rear instead of the stock 130mm. Mind you i installed a Metzeler ME 880 then the upgraded ME888 at replacement. The Metzeler has minimal expansion when heated under load therefore no rubbing issues tho very tight between the fender. This i am told (and so far holding true) will not work with a Dunlop, Michelin or others because they expand alot when heated up. When i did this i was very, very sceptical but the mechanic guaranteed it so i pulled the trigger and could not have been happier and looks great with that meaty 150 out back.
Not sure if you saw in a recent video but i showed the clearance between the tyre wall and the belt.. and its about 3mm... not sure if you have a slim belt conversion, but mine still runs the full width 1"1/2 inch belt and there is no room for a bigger tyre, the belt would even hit a 140 let alone any wider....

That's the video I watched - you made it look so easy. Luckily my Ducati has a single sided swingarm so I don't need to worry about alignment and tensioning is almost too easy. It's almost cheating!!

combatmonkey5442 I said that to Del, but he reckons its to be cherished. Something about that bloody mudguard don’t look right to me. But as I said before, what do i know about Harley stuff.
OK, I get that you don't like it, but stick with it chaps... bobbers are short and stumpy with upright forks, like a StreetBob or FatBob, but the Dyna Wide Glide has 5 degrees shallower forks rake and is almost 3" longer, a chopped up half length rear fender would make the back end look unfinished... and out of context with the steeper raked forks, a bit like the Marlborough Man bike, the back of that just looked odd... at least 6 Harleys have had a ducktail fender, it's one of their most classic looks and as the old saying goes, there's more to life than bobbers lol Stick with it., you'll see...!!!

Finder narrow inside solid frame rail, what about fabricating finder that mounts on OUTSIDE OF MOUNTED FRAME RAIL! I sent you idea of using vacuum pump food sealer bags for storing brake fluid, an, thank you for reply that your garage is dry. I was thinking about where my bike is stored, haha an wondered if it work for all of us! Thanks Tim
Hi Tim, brake fluid bottles are air tight, otherwise they'd leak, so just do them up nice and tight and put them in the cupboard, no need for food bags, but if it makes you feel more confident, I guess it won't do any harm!

getting there mate, just a quick note you maybe better turning up your Frames per second when filming the lathe, that should remove the artifacting as the shutter couldn't keep up with the speed of the chuck

Cheers buddy, that would work on the GoPro as I have the option to do that, but my big camera at 1080 only gives me 50 frames a second, I'll do some experimenting... thanks for the insight and advice, much appreciated mate.
depends on your editing software but that might cause a frame rate conflict on the timeline which could cause judder elswhere in the video.

that spacer is a piece of jewlery look's mint.anyway here's to making you giggle ? me and the wife brought a newer car for her and as usual soon as i got chance i did an oil and filter change got the bucket underneath while draing old oil got on with changing the filter which on her mondeo is at the top on the right .whiletwisting my wrist to retrieve the said filter the wife comes out and let's me know the bucket has a hole in it lol..guess who was cleaning the driveway sunday lol ....any way boss another great video and thanks again

Got a question about center of the wheel in the center of frame. I mock my wheel up with stock spacers wheel is off 1/4 of an inch to the right. To center wheel I need to trim spacers 1/4 to get center of the fender mounts
would definitely suggest using washers of different thicknesses if your using this method. the 2mm (just a guess) isnt going to be accurate enough to get you where you want if your going through all the work for these custom spacers. You dont want your swingarm bowing inward when you torque the rear wheel down, as it seems to from the footage here. Even though its a small amount, that is quite a lot of tension within the swingarm if its being bent in. If your spending all that time to do something precision, you might as well go all the way. Just my opinion
All swing arms spring out when released, some more than others, and with mine, it springs out to the exact amount right now, as it did with the factory spacer and the factory wheel, so I've got the spacing correct... also, the est gauge of all is the length of the axle, when my axle nut is done up, I have just two threads clear in the open, so any wider and I wouldn't be able to insert the split pin through the castle nut... good points well made though, my friend, thanks for sharing your insight, much appreciated!

Harley School told us years ago that the belt always loaded (touched) the outside of the pulley. Not saying you're wrong, just what I remembered. I could be wrong.

Hello Del. I've just taken out and reinstalled my 2020 Softail Harley. On reinstalling I noticed that the spacer's are large in diameter like yours and was thinking that the press against the outside of the wheel bearing. That seems strange to me as I was assuming they clamp against the inside of the bearing, is this correct. It seems to work fine but confusing.
How do you line up the disk with the caliper? Do u use washers?

Hi both, hope you're well, thank you for your kind words... the ruler and set square is to measure the tool height, you trap the rule against the work piece and naturally being round, if the tool is precisely in the centre, then the rule will stand dead upright, and you check that with the set square because the tool post is dead flat with the bed! ...it's a quick way of checking too height without having to centre it withe the tail stock!

Just love your channel! Last year I knew absolutely nothing about motorcycles, except that I really liked them and wanted a Harley since I was a kid. Just over a year ago I bought myself a Softail and thanks to the “Harley Softail Service series”, which brought me to your channel, I’m now doing all the maintenance myself!!
Recently I got new wheels, discs and pulley. The hubs have threads to bolt into and are billet aluminum. Now I have searching for the correct torque settings for the bolts (5/16 UNC, 3/8 UNC and 7/16 UNC all torx heads) in to aluminum, but couldn’t find a clear answer. Would you by any chance know the correct torque setting or where to look it up?

For your wheels, all of the torque range values will be listed in the HD Workshop Manual, If you do not have one, they are a fantastic investment, and something you should certainly have in your garage.. Get the direct from your local HD main dealer.. they are expensive.. (about £70 over here), but money very well spent, you will find yourself turning to it every time you do anything on your bike... i use mine all the time... I could look up the range values for you in my book, but i fear that they could be different for my 99" Dyna Wide Glide.. i don't have a manual for new Softail. Del, thank you for the quick response! You and Penny inspired that without any doubt. I mean, everything is so clearly described and pictured, that it feels like I’m following a course and I could even build my own motorcycle. And I think I will!
For the Manual, I do actually have one but was guessing the torque range values would be different for aluminum. I’ve got a FLSTN ‘96 and for example, according to the manual, the range for the pulley on the stock hub with locknuts, is 75-88 Nm. Now, that seemed a little high to me and I was afraid to strip the aluminum threads. Or shouldn’t that be a problem?
Hi again Vlores, Ok, just checked my Dyna manual, and on the sprocket bolts, it gives two values.... for "Laced wheels" it gives 61-75Nm, and for "Cast Wheels" it gives 75-88 Nm...
So as you can see it varies, and that always encourages doubt... so if this was my install, i would contact the supplier/manufacturer of the actual wheels, and ask them what torque value they recommend.. they will know that the exact material is that the wheels are made from, and should have the right data for basic specs such as fitting wheels and discs.... And obviously, don't forget the Threadlock on each bolt..! Sorry i can't be more specific mate.. hope that helps in some way... Del.

Where did you buy the bolt sets for the pulley and disc?
The guys on the Great Biker Build Off, never use loctite or torque wrenches!!!
Have you checked the condition of the front pulley, can't remember you mentioning it.
Thankfully., the belt and front pulley were replaced less than a year ago, i have the invoice in with the bike's history.. so all it needed was the back pulley replacing.!
@Delboy's Garage I live in surrey and need a front wheel spacer made. I have converted my KTM EXC-F 250cc to a supermoto and the spacers provided are 0.05mm too narrow. At the moment I have the spacers provided and a 0.05mm Shim washer on and I dont trust that it will be strong enough to ride. could you tell me how I would go about having a new spacer made, I do not have a lathe like yourself and Ive tried google searching machine shops to have new spacers made but I dont seem to have much luck. Could you point me in the direction of a company that would be able to create these or could I send the current spacer to yourself and you create one for a fee.
Sorry if you touched on this in the comments already, but any reason you made it from 304SS? Just for the stainless aspect? I pull alot of spacers out of stuff and they're often aluminium. Any advantage in switching to SS?
So a shop lost my wheel spacer on the caliper side am I able to custom make one like you did for a street bike? Tried to order online but their on back order for weeks and I wanna ride. My work has the same machines as wheel
Works for any bike, just make sure it's correct as it's pretty critical.!
Careful you don't get a BBC copyright strike. They're notoriously bad when it comes to the Dr Who sounds and images.
With the altered tolerance in the new spacer will their be any issue when the axle/spacer heats up? (I have no idea how hot either would get, so maybe irrelevant...)
The axle or spindle and spacers aren't moving parts, the spacer faces up to the wheel bearing which is the moving part, there's also a spacer in the centre of the wheel between the two wheel bearings to take the stress when the spindle is torqued up.
@@motorbikemad001 Ah, very good point. And I knew that. I think I've been sitting in front of this computer for far too long and my brain is starting to liquify... :D
@@brucemilne8780 your not wrong, the bearing will still transfer heat into the spacer and the force onto the axle will also make heat through minor bending stresses. That being said, I doubt it would become an issue because 1) this isnt going to be a rossi track bike that loads the axle with ridiculous force around corners and 2) The materials are going to be very similar in thermal expansion rate since they are the same (or very close) material.

@@picassoimpaler3243 I agree that it's not a track bike and experiencing those forces, so probably not an issue. I was thinking initially more of the weight of all that HD sitting on the axle and upping the friction and so more heat, etc etc.

NEED YOUR ADVICE PLEASE I am curious on your opinion about using the same oil to change all three areas in my new 2018 road king? I would like to know what you recommend and why...
Talk with your Harley dealer, maybe get a word with one of their master Tech's and ask them about "Screaming Eagle Syn3", it's developed initially for the V-Rod racing engines, and exceeds all of the recommended oils for your bike..so it's been long accepted by many Harley owners to use it in all three holes.... Now because you have a bike that is practically brand new, and will be one of the later modern motors, (107ci i presume?) then i would take the advice of the technicians at the dealership and go with their advice.. mainly because your bike is still very much under manufacturers warranty, and its important to follow the right advice.. Moonfleet41 they say Syn3 in all three holes..... I just am hesitant about using it in the transmission....
on my 89fxr dont have the alignment holes i had to measure from the swingarm axle ,pain in the A~~e but same principal , when you changed the rear pully did you like for like ? as when i enquired for mine some dealers said it was a 70 tooth with a 133 belt and others 74 with 140 belt , all agreed on 1 1/2 width tho , i counted the one i had on in the end , Word of warning to peeps out there dont always go by what the dealer says with reg etc as on a few occasions my bike changes from and FXR to Fxlt . found out the hard way but find a guy who has had harleys and knows about them , Good imformative vid as is the Norm And Oh Penny That Voice !!!!!!!!!!1
Hi Mike, great info, well posted, thanks for that, you are correct in every way... there are variations between models and it's important to get it right... little tip for ya, if it helps... you can add those marks to your swing arm, simple method... measure the swing arm pivot to axle both sides and get it absolutely bang on, take an hour to make sure it is perfect to withint 1/2mm... then measure from the axle 3" forward and pop a centre punch mark, once you've checked that the centre punch marks are bang on equal with the swing arm pivot either side, and you know you are absolutely correct, stick a 3mm drill through the centre punch mark... and then you'll have them to use for the future! ... the diameter of the new wheel is drastically smaller even with the lowered ohlins. Thats why I am proposing it. But you are closer, (obvs) u know best.
