- Using the EVH 5150iii 50w today trying to dial in Megadeth's new album - The Sick, The Dying... And the Dead.
Dave Mustaine is an absolute monster on the guitar and still pushing physical limits in his playing. I thought his vocals were fantastic and the production is unreal. Definitely solid album that I enjoy and love playing.

The King of Tone Capturing 🙌 😎🤘
The absolute king
I don't understand all the hate for Mission to Mars. Reminds of something on SFSGSW, while the chorus riff sounds like something off CTE. Excellent job with the tone. This new album was a great marriage between early era Megadeth and modern production. For making albums for 40 years, it was an amazing achievement!
well, where is that "hate" exactly? I have only read and heard extreme praise for the song. And why should it be otherwise, considering how badass it is? :)
The only thing I've seen that comes close to "disapproval" (although it's NOT really...) is people expressing wonder at what exactly makes it so likable to them.
btw, here's what the song should REALLY remind you of:
The verse riff is an almost direct ripoff of the verse riff of The Offspring's song Smash (from the same-titled album). And, man, what a badass song that one is also! :)
The intro jingles are an allusion to Another Way to Die -- the main Soundtrack song to the 007 film from 2008 -- Quantum of Solace.
The frantic outro riffage is, of course, a reference to Metallica's One.
Hope that clears it up! :)
Mustaine's at his best when he injects theatrical fun in songs like Mission to Mars, Sweating Bullets, and Captive Honour.
You, sir, are a living breathing kemper lol. Your "capturing" videos are always spot on and a joy to watch.
I had high hopes for the album when We'll Be Back was released, and boy did it not disappoint! It's one of if not the best Megadeth album imo and my personal favourite.
With the guitar tone I also don't believe it's Dave's normal set up let alone a Marshall. While I think the tone is a little "stale" sounding, it's probably Dave's best tone imo. It combines so many of my favourite aspects of his older tones and it just makes it so much more enjoyable to listen to.
Some people like to shit talk about Mission To Mars saying it's "cheesy" and "weak" but I personally love the song. It may not be as strong as the other songs on the album, but it definitely has a character to it and as a sci-fi and astronomy fan it's very entertaining to listen to.
His tone around 2008 with the jvm 410h is pretty hard to beat
the tone is likely from a neural dsp quad cortex. Kiko got Dave acquainted with those.
And imo i don't find the tone stale at all, i particularly enjoy how it sounds relatively modern and crunchy but still very distinct from the generic boosted 5150/jcm 800 tone that has dominated every big budget metal and hardcore record since 1993.
I love when he uses the 5150 I have the exact one sitting right beside me makes life so easy
Same.. I have that and dsl20.. makes it great to get same tones always killing it
I love the fact that he never uses backing tracks ... Or those drum programs because when most content creators do it doesn't sound good the tone gets buried with the production
0:34 This riff is just too fucking amazing. It gives me incredible chills and it is just an explosion of emotion. Great video Lamb
Only Dave could write such a riff!
dave is taking back his arrangements just like arch enemy is taking back their soul
Killer tone, killer playing and a killer album. Thanks for this.
It’s a killer album in my opinion. I thoroughly enjoy listening to it.
Keep kicking ass Lambchopper .
This is such a great album. The best in years!
Oh yea thx for playing Mission to Mars, I love that song it is pure old school 80s Mustaine shredding killer riff, echo of My last words which is my fav Megadeth song.

Good to see you back! Told ya we would still be here, rock on friend! 🙂
You play their riffs incredibly cleanly, wow man.
Amigo, excelente toque como siempre, saludos desde Colombia.
Some fearsome riffing, great work🤟 Incredible that Mustaine is still cranking out this stuff after all these years and with his health issues.
You are a champion dude, always love kicking back listening to you talk shit about guitar.
Nice addition adding those Thrash Factors. I just put them in my Jackson and they sound killer. All of your videos are fantastic, but your Megadeth stuff is particularly rad! Thank you for making these🤘
You’re a beast 💪 I’m so glad you’re back! Killer video! I love this stuff. Have you thought about doing a Sepultura Arise album tone video? I’ve been obsessed with that album recently. Killer tone killer songs. Cheers man, thanks!
Great job as always, Mr. LambChopper! :)
I've come to explain *WHY* Mission to Mars sounds so amazingly catchy and FUN to everyone's ears:
1) The intro jingles are an allusion to Another Way to Die -- the main Soundtrack song to the 007 film from 2008 -- Quantum of Solace.
(Disturbed did something similar in their eponymous song (Another Way to Die) back in 2010)
2) The verse riff is an almost direct ripoff of the verse riff of The Offspring's *song* Smash (from the same-titled album). And, man, what a badass song that one is also! :)
(By the way, Mustaine has said in the past that he's a fan of The Offspring, so please don't accuse me of imagining things. It's clear as day this is an homage!)
3) The frantic outro riffage is, of course, a reference to Metallica's One.
4) The singing style, lyrics, and of course just the overall story narrative is just SO. DAMN. *COOL.* . (like LambChopper said, the spoken-word interplays are really great! :) )
So there you have it!
I hope that at least contextualizes things for you and makes it easier to understand WHY. :)
Man I really love this videos, unfortunately in Argentina is really hard to get all those amps and equipment but I hope some day I can capture those tones!
Great playing as usual.. Mission to mars is my favourite.. new album is full of fun riffs ..
Ahhh this is awesome!! I should have known you would be all over this!! Great stuff!!! Glad to see you back!! Really glad!!!
I am also going to download that cab too 😮!!!
Amazing 👍
Excelente🤘🤘🤘
The best UA-cam Channel🔥
Tone and playing sounds great. Quality video as usual. Good to see all is well and you're back to making content. I recently picked up an Evh 5150iii stealth 50watt and matching 2x12 can. Sounds amazing. Not sure if you've done this prior, but would be cool to see some machinehead stuff, especially burn my eyes. Their new album that was recently released is great.
I would love to have a capture for the Quad Cortex of this tone😍. Love it
For God's sake make us a Prince of Darkneess tone guide!!!! Those guitar are absolutely INSANE!!!
Awesome! Also loved mission to mars, the 9:12 part was the first thing I wanted to learn
@lambchopper I seriously cannot thank you enough for this video! I've waited since the day they released Well be back for a tone tutorial!
Same. You can see my reply to his comment on that music video lol
I was literally looking for this last night thats crazy
Great to see you back nailing the guitar tones
Hopefully you doing some song covers from exodus persona non grata.
There is some really good stuff for guitar players to play.
Cheers Chopper.
Daamn, you really made the video dude!!! I was literally asking for it in two different accounts. You're our saviour 🙏
Could you make a video for Kiko's tone in this album? His guitar sounds kinda sharp at some parts and i like so much this effect
Nice to see that you used the BritMega, that's the cab I'm using 90% of the time on my Captor X, it sounds really good (I might be biased though as that's the real cab I use too lol)
Sounded so spot on
Thrash for days!!! 🤘
Great video as always. Can't say I'm a big fan of their new album, but the tone is very nice. Also, have you considered doing the tone from the album "For Victory" by Bolt Thrower? It's undoubtedly a hidden gem in terms of metal tones. It's absolutely massive!
I'm your 1000th like!
Nice capturing!! In the kiko video they said they use live Friedman amp so maybe in the album they use a combination of amp.
i got a cool idea that i think you would like. you could do viewers’ tone reactions. you could say what you like about each viewer’s tone or give some advice on what you would do differently
also i got the idea from ola englund
awesome. personallky can't stand mission to mars. the i wanna i wanna wanna threw me off. the riff near the end is truly killer tough.,
I wasn't to sure of what to made of this album when I first heard it. But after a few listens I found it to sound a little bit like there album end game. Which I love.
Choppers delivers yet again with another KILLER instruction vid on how to nail a respective tone down! :)
However, despite his amazing job at that, I would suggest that he rather refer to *TABS* when learning the riffs,
as his current method of playing them demonstrates that his by-ear learning technique is not exactly on-point! :P
(also, there are some timing issues...)
Yes!!!
Glad you brought up Mission to Mars. I actually love the song. Got great riffs that draws me in, song is corny as hell, but Iove it 🤣 Over all, pretty happy with the album. I got the blue and green translucent special edition vinyl which is pretty damn cool I might say. Nice work again LambChopper!
Kiko mentioned a while ago that he was using the QC's Friedman amp models when he first got his.
how??? Best metal guitarist and sound guy around
i remember when jackson brought that king v out i wanted it so bad
Gran album
💯💯
Very similar to album tone, last riff in mission to mars is not so complex but very effective in song! 🤟
How does this man have some a good ear and friggin patience to do these videos??? I can't think of anything more frustrating than sitting there for hours trying to clone other peoples tones with such perfection. Bugger that! :D
Dave doesnt use Heads anymore.....he uses neural dsp quad cortex and a seymour duncan power stage 500....i think the amp head he used to model the tones is a Marshall JCM 800
For live, not studio recording.
you should try and capture metallica's death magnetic tone :) notthat hard to achieve and positive you can acheive a great tone using the sick equipement you got in the back :)
I believe it was on the the vids on Kikos channel where it was mentioned that Dave used an 800 in the studio for the record. A real amp, not the model on for cortex. This would make sense since live he’s been using the 800 on the cortex.
Kiko probably using Axe FX 3. also those are coolest riffs!!!🤘🎸
Both guitarists have switched to Neural DSP Quad Cortex now
Nailed it! Frankie Hill FTW!
According to interviews, Dave has been using Greenback lately.
I hope one day you can make the tone of the united abominations, I know you told me that they are different tones, but it would be fun. Greetings from Mexico!
UA might be my favourite sound, with Endgame, they keep switching places
👍👍🤘
