Wonderful review as always. Omar Sharif was a terrific actor. I enjoyed him in many films, the obvious ones, Dr. Zhivago and Lawrence of Arabia, but one of my favourite performances of his was in a little known but wonderful film called "The Night of the Generals" with Peter O'Toole and Tom Courtenay.

Thanks for the give away! I would design a Michael Dorn pen and call it the Dorn. It would be a Worf theme and the clip would be inspired by a bat'leth and the center band would have the same pattern as Worf's Baldric (sash). It will be available in 2 colors: mustard yellow/charcoal grey and maroon/charcoal grey. While we're at it, we might as well make a pen for each character from TNG. I choose Montegrappa to get the ball rolling on this project.
The ideas are really starting to come to me now...I think Retro 51 needs to make a Jack Webb series of pens!

I just purchased one of these in brown, it's currently in shipping. I was curious about your writing style, I've noticed you use a combination of upper and lower case, also printing and cursive kind of all together. Is that a style you just came up with? I know people prefer certain hand movements while writing and adjust style to accommodate those movements. Was just curious as I enjoy your writing.

Love the little bits of trivia you include in your reviews and this one is no different. Very interesting topic you posed, and try as I might, I couldn't pick out a single actor as a favorite but I thought of director John Carpenter and felt a pen in his honor would be interesting, especially considering he often writes not only his films but the scores as well.
Great review! Love the purple color.

I think the late, great Audrey Hepburn would be a stellar choice for a pen. She was elegant, talented, and an UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador due to her ordeal during WWII when she was among those who received food and medical care. She once said, “People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, reclaimed, and redeemed, never throw out anyone.”

That clip is very cool in how subtle it is. I wish I could use eyedropper pens, but they always burp. I wonder if being able to shut off the ink chamber would help with the burping I get from eyedropper pens.

I have a couple of Opus 88s already and I can attest that the filling system and shutoff valve are very efficient ways to store ink in a pen. Having the shutoff valve screwed down also seems to prevent burps, the bane of some eyedropper pens. As for the name, I think Omar works for a pen where a lot of names wouldn't. Would you name a pen Kate (Hepburn), James (Stewart) or even Clark (Gable)? Those names, and most western first names don't seem to work well as pen names. Maybe Toshiro (Mifune) would be a reasonable choice.

Opus 88 uses a different numbering system for their nibs: their #10 is actually a standard #5, and what they call #12 is actual a #6 size nib.
I’m curious, the original Opus 88 Demo was their first pen with a “#12” nib, and with that pen, you could switch out the whole nib unit and put in a Pilot Parallel nib. Since this pen is a “#12” too, could you use a Parallel nib with this as well?
...let me win it so I can find out! :)

Thank you for the review. I have been interested is seeing how the filling system on this type of pen worked. I have not used eye-dropper pens very much because I had the experience of them "burping" in my journal. It seems that having the shut-off and reservoir would help with that problem. It's an interesting looking pen and I may have to try one. I always thought Roger Moore was cool 007, so maybe I would design a suave looking pen for him. Cheers!

Thanks for the great review David! I've always been curious about the Opus 88's ink mechanism.
To name a pen, I think I'd go for Richard Burton - for both the actor and the explorer. Given the dual ink system, it would be nice to name a pen after 2 men who shared the same name but with contributions from completely different fields

Excellent review, as usual. I really like the way you cover the technical details, particularly providing all the specifics on dimensions. I would think such would be the bare minimum, but such is obviously not so! One more reason I ALWAYS watch your reviews. I really like Opus 88 and currently have 3 of the larger Demos and a blue on blue Koloro. I've been wanting this very pen for some time. Purple is my favorite color! As to an actor to inspire a pen, how about Charleston Heston. He portrayed numerous characters very well, so the pen first and foremost should be practically functional. That aspect is often overlooked on many pens named after famous people today...though perhaps an accurate reflection. ;-p

  • @bjeweledinmaine1

The movie actor that I would consider naming a pen for is Meryl Streep and I would call it the Meryl. The design would be variable in the sense that it would have stunning colors that would blend into one another. The nib would be flexible. Meryl Streep is one of the premier actors of the 20 21st century and she has taken on so many different accents and roles, and excelled at all of them hence the variable colors. The flexible nib is because everything she does is done with a flair. Finally, the nib would come in stainless steel, and for extra charge 14 karat, because many times her acting roles have been chosen for their literary content - 14k and their relationship to the present - stainless steel. I love Opus 88 pens but found their demonstrator pen to be too blocky for my hands while this new one is a little more elegant.

I hadn't considered the Opus 88 brand before I watched your video, Figgy. Nice presentation. Worthy of Omar himself. So maybe next time you might want to consider another fine performer to match that of another fine pen, the fictional but fabulous Olivier. Classic in its refined presentation, able to extend itself from the broad to the extra fine nuances of its director, smooth in its delivery and bold in its commitment, the Olivier will give your writing both the flare and the dignity of the great one himself.
