If you look at Arthurs journal during the Blackwater part he talks about a fire in the Grizzlies and thats why they left. Maybe the Porters were trying to get the Van der Lindes at one point.
I've always wondered about that as well, yet the area around Chez Porter is really narrow and there's no real large or private area for a gang to hunker down within a secluded camp. That area with the long trail which leads up to Cotorra Springs only really works for Chez Porter. Unless of course the gang was camping around the Tempest Rim or Barrow Lagoon, however that area's weather and conditions are probably rather harsh, similar to Colter. Perhaps their camp was in between and south of Barrow Lagoon and Chez Porter (the terrain is very rugged but there could be some secluded spots in there for the gang to pitch a camp). The gang could have been camping in an area of the map in the Grizzlies that's officially outside of the game map, but further south (of Tempest Rim, Barrow Lagoon) where the conditions aren't too harsh.
Don't think the Porters would go after a gang as big as the Van Der Lindes, but that's probably why they left the Grizzlies and moved camp farther south around Blackwater.
