There's a tracking shot when Luke is fighting Vader that lasts about eight seconds and it has more meaning and symbolism than anything in the prequels. Not the best Star Wars film but it's sentimental to me.
Great listen guys my ranking are: Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back The Return of the Jedi The Force Awakens Rogue One Revenge of the Sith The Last Jedi Solo Attack of the Clones The Rise of Skywalker The Phantom Menace I'm more of an Indiana Jones fan so maybe I don't have the best judgement.
Great to see you guys back Love Luke's characterisation in this and he remains calm right until the end when Vader taunts him. This is the luke I wanted in ep7
I can't watch Jedi without thinking of Mark Hamill in the Simpsons. "LUKE be a Jedi tonight! Just be a Jedi tonight! Do it for Yoda as we serve our guests a Soda, and uh.. Do it for Chewie and the Ewooooks... And all the other puppets!" This is almost a Muppet movie. It feels like Labyrinth to me... Only it doesn't have David Bowie and a series of musical numbers.
As a child RoTJ was my favourite. Empire annoyed me because it didn't feel complete. I now prefer Empire but still have to follow it immediately with RoTJ. Sadly, since I sold my LD collection I no longer have a "near as damn it" original theatrical release version of these films and outright refuse to purchase the CGI-vomit covered updates.
Return of the Jedi is my favorite of the Star Wars series. Always has been, always will. Its just plain fun and it caries a lot of emotional weight to it.

For a while I'd have said this was my favourite SW film. Nowadays, I switch between this and Empire. This one starts slow but kicks into a whole other gear once the Emperor shows up, while Empire maintains a consistent pace/tone. Also, the scenes between Luke/Vader/The Emperor make for such an interesting dynamic, because it's not just one guy versus another, but has a whole other level of meaning.
We had all three original versions taped back to back on one VHS tape and I have vivid memories of spending the weekend sat on the carpet watching them.
Return of the Jedi has a special place in my heart as it was the first Star Wars movie I ever watched. My old school mate let me borrow his tape of the original version when I was about 6 or 7 and it blew my little mind. Then once I saw the rest of the trilogy with the 1997 re-releases, I was hooked from then on.
ROTJ really feels like 2 films. Id put the post jabba part against any other SW fiction. The ending is so emotional, boombastic and exciting. Shame the jabba sequence eats up soo much running time
As someone born in the early seventies and remembering these movies at the time, I can say the immediate “worst Star Wars” movie idea is overhyped. At the time we all liked it - it took about ten years for people to see it as “not the best.”
Somebody pointed something out in a video once which is kinda funny and sad when you think about it and it was something like; Padme would be heartbroken if she knew her husband and son were fighting lol
(Anakin kills a whole bunch of people) "Aww. It's okay." "I KILLED THEM ALL!" "To be angry is to be human. And it won't happen again." (Anakin kills a jedi temple full of 6 year olds) "Awww man, how did I not see this coming?!"
There's a bit of a bizarre story surrounding this Star Wars entry my parents first met in America because they were working in a children's camp, one of their dates was to see The Return Of The Jedi. My understanding was it was already out for 2 months and my father fell asleep and hated Star Wars ever since. My father revealed to me this a few years ago that this was the first Star Wars film he ever saw so I think it wasn't the best introduction to Star Wars. Without going into much detail my parents went through a divorce several years later. Going back to The Return Of The Jedi this from was the first one I remember from childhood, I can't give an exact age when I first saw the original trilogy I don't remember. As a kid The Rancor pit scared me, I think this film from the Star Wars original trilogy is nostalgic because it's the one I remember most from childhood. I think if you compare it to the previous films before it's less cinematic than then in technical sense, I mean I do think it's a bit of a rehash of A New Hope due to the second death star, The Ewoks were the start of the whole kid friendly factor thing in Star Wars lore though arguably they are cute, there are some clunky elements like with Luke finding out Leia is his sister. The dialogue between them when they exchange words with each other before the big battles the writing will contradict this stuff in The Revenge Of The Sith. The certain point of view element might be a bit clunky again.Han Solo doesn't do much in the story. On other notes people I think forget that The Return Of The Jedi in some ways that's when Star Wars went downhill but it gets more love than others however I understand for criticisms with the other films later on but that's another topic. People also forget that The Empire Strikes Back wasn't well received at first but then another discussion. On to the more positive things I agree on The Luke Skywalker elements they are moving and that's what drives the story I think. From the clip with the review for Back To The Future I thought that would be the first one then I saw this advertised on UA-cam and was wrong.
The first three films were simple stories told through warm, likeable, three dimensional characters whereas the prequels were complex, grand stories told through dry, formal, two dimensional characters. Even the final trilogy has a very neutered Han/Leia relationship, Star Wars never really got that original chemistry between it's cast back again.
YES! Return of the Jedi is my favorite Star Wars movie also. That final meeting between Luke and Vader is the best lightsaber duel EVER. The weight and drama of it is intense. And Luke was warned that if he allows or shows his weakness, which is his love for his friends and especially his sister, the Sith will use that against you. If they succeed in poking at your weakness and you give into your emotions then you will start down a path that is very hard to turn back from. However, Luke being Luke, he is able to turn away from the darkside and in doing so he shows his father that he can do the same and to not be afraid of it. I could blabber on for hours about it so I'll leave it at that. Great video lads!!
When I was a kid RotJ was 100% my favourite of the three films. As I got older I think I began to appreciate Empire a lot more for what it was doing but it was definitely the third film that I ended up rewatching the most because for me it had the best action and I just found the Ewoks funny and cute.
I used to be quite uncompromising towards Jedi but in re-watching the prequels a while ago, I came to appreciate the tactility of its filmmaking so much more. Case in point: no sequence in the prequels can contend with the Rancor Pit scene.
Hi VVB(all of you including Richard and Duncan). ROTJ is my favourite star wars film. it used to be on all the time when i was a child and was the one i drifted to the most mainly because i loved the Ewoks.
Absolutely agree that the lightsaber battle in Jedi is very poignant and moving. When Vadar tells luke he's already saved him, I might of shed a tear..
As a child of 76 I’m just a little ahead of you. I love all three of the first trilogy but Empire is my favourite, mostly because I got a snow speeder for my 9th birthday. I have nothing bad to say a rotj, if anything I enjoy Iain McDairmid’s Emperor more than any other character in most any film. I enjoy him even more in revenge of the Sith when he goes full ham and eats the green screen. Great to see you both back, I never have a bad half hour when you’re just chatting like the mates you are. Top notch stuff, gents.
Favourite Star Wars movie for me. Always loved it since I was a kid, although I have vivid memories of my uncle showing me the special edition vhs and apprently I wasn’t interested lol. I wish we could live in a world where David Lynch directed a Star Wars film.
Growing up in Turkey, my mum made me watch Empire when I was 6 or 7 (1993) , and as you mention it was shown on the telly at random intervals. I LOVED that movie, but never managed to see A new hope or RotJ till 98 when they were re-released at the cinemas due to the movies being very hard to find back then. (I remember hunting for a VHS copy of last crusade for weeks). Imagine waiting 5 years in the 90's to learn wtf happened after Han solo was frozen. It's laughable to think about it now. But yeah RotJ is very enjoyable, and possibly has the best OST out of them. I love the space battle theme. Such good times.
This was my favourite of the original recipe Star Wars trilogy growing up in the 90’s, now that I’m older Empire is far and away my favourite and this has slid to be about on par with A New Hope. People talk about the sluggish middle act of this movie but as I watch this movie more and more I get a bit frustrated with the first act if I’m honest as it feels a bit tedious: 3PO and R2 go to Jabba’s palace and get captured; then Chewie and Leia go to Jabba’s palace and get captured, then Luke goes to Jabba’s palace and gets captured. I wish about 20 minutes was excised to give us a little more in the middle act whether that’s of Luke with Yoda, or seeing more of the rebels prepping for the final battle. But the final battle remains this films highlight, the space battle still holds up as it shifts between the battle on the moon and Vader and Luke’s duel on the Death Star. McDiarmid is so good in this and upon my most recent rewatch Hamill is excellent. Richard nails it talking about how calm and collected he remains, his growth is probably the biggest out of the protagonists as the series went on. Touching on the new stuff I loved seeing post-ROTJ Luke in Book of Boba Fett though it was giving us probably too much, and it was a shame to see him giving Baby Yoda the choice of Jedi or bust but I suppose his going by the ways of the prequel Jedi ties into his realisation that the legacy of those Jedi was failure as they didn’t reconcile the balance between their devotion to the order as well as the connections to others that keep them grounded and human, which of course gives us Kyle Ren but the less I think about the sequels the better.
@Red Deadadventures I think Luke Skywalker’s role in the live action series feels a bit dull. I agree on points of The Return Of The Jedi though the first act is fun but I understand from points I would say the Endor bits may be sluggish but those are my points and the Ewoks I agree they are cute but they were the start of the whole kid friendly elements of Star Wars franchise. I do think having another Death Star is a bit lazy.
The first half of Jedi is good, as soon as the teddy bears show up the film goes down hill. Darth Vader taking his mask off and seeing a boiled egg underneath was really disappointing. 6/10
Happy to see you both back, what ever the format. I can get on board with Jedi being a fave. For me, I can only watch the original trilogy. Anything else Star Wars related just drains me now lol.
"Death Egg" 😂 Lovely stuff chaps. It's my "favourite" too, mostly for the reasons you describe. The climactic Luke/Vader/Emperor stuff never fails to be powerful even after what must be the hundreds of times I've watched it.
There's a tracking shot when Luke is fighting Vader that lasts about eight seconds and it has more meaning and symbolism than anything in the prequels.
Not the best Star Wars film but it's sentimental to me.
