Paris Olympics 2024: How Tahiti is the perfect location for surfing waves While most 2024 Olympians will be battling for glory in Paris, the world's best surfers will be going for gold some 10,000 miles away on the island of Tahiti, where the spinning blue barrels of Teahupo'o might be the real star of the show. Malicious Tongues Claim That Colonialism Fits In Very Well With The Values Of The IOC. Both Stand For Exploitation. Just Ask The Indigenous People And The Poorly Paid Athletes.
Basically, it’s summer in France and the waves are better there in the Autumn/ Winter months. In Tahiti, Teahupo’o is a World class wave which gets a lot of waves in the winter.
The surfing location is pronounced exactly how it is spelt. But the english tongue is lazy when it comes to pronouncing or even learning Polynesian place names. Te Ahupoo not chowpoo.
The reef was destroyed and the spirit of rhis spot and the lifestyle is gone...and no, the locals are not happy with that!!! For the competitors it is more than unfair as this wave is just good for barrel chargers. The olympics do harm our way of life and the reef massively, and all that just for profit!!!poor ....

@@bigk4961 no it is not. It's a territory with no less right for any of its citizens than a breton In France. The weight of a vote by a tahitian to the presidential election is the same. And it has a great degree of independence. This is the same kind of status as Hawai in the US. Unless Hawai is a colony according to you? And it is less of a colony than than say Puerto Rico as they don't vote for the presidential election in the US do they? Also the possibility is open for full independence through a referendum, that those territories do not want. Nouvelle Calédonie just had a new référendum (the 4th one) and independence was again rejected.

This was by far the best researched short mainstream news segment about surfing I've ever seen.

It's because the world never decolonised and the French still run Polynesia.
