as a Chinese , at beginning, when the google baned , some people worry about it . But right now all people think this is really a smart move . Extremely protectionism. we have our own internet ecosystem right now , and it is much better than other country ,and more , it is reserved talents (many talent back to China join internet industry); database , and even all theses big internet company have own new tech development direction, like baidu(search engine)right now is focus on AI . And for the end user, you can get VPN around 10 bucks a month. and in big city like Beijing or Shanghai , all the tall office building have VPN , and some of them you can automatically connect when you choose it as WiFi. not big deal . some time you have to admit Chinese government is smart .
you are not using the internet. bad for you
@@djf7537 I‘m just using the internet at this moment by VPN,so what?
Agreed. Even if they don't block UA-cam and Facebook, majority of we Chinese will still choose our own internet. I'm also using VPN. It's not a big deal actually.

I get the feeling Bloomberg doesn't like China very much...
There has been no follow up to the China has infiltrated the manufacturing supply chain and put nanochips in all servers of US companies.
They're just reporting the facts for what they are.
The boss of Bloomberg is going to run for the US presidency.

I am a Chinese living abroad, last month when I am back for a short business trip , I tried UA-cam in Shenzhen , it was blocked , but an ads of VPN service jumped out unexpectedly . So my opinion, it was not forbidden to use VPN, and in fact it was ok to sell the service and make an ad about it .
Lulu Zheng no, it’s illegal, unless the government permit. It’s just the vpn company get around ways to show u the ads. Try to search vpn in Taobao.
There are multiple people getting arrested by selling VPNs in China.

Is there a full version of this piece? It felt like a teaser. I was just getting interested and it was over.
Haha its funny to see both western and chinese users are bashing each others' freeedoms xD
Indeed, because there is no true universal freedom. Different bias are doomed to fight. The problem is, that Chinese here know what freedom in both sides mean, yet western people can only imagine what the unfreedom Chinese people have.
The first person who slung a insult in place of a stone was the founder of civilization.
@Cameron I wonder do people in US enjoy freedom except white people? I am afraid not.
@Cameron If you really believe these fake News. It only means your brain was washed, not Xinjiang citizens. Do you understand?
@Cameron It seems you are completely brainwashed. Just go to Xinjiang and experience the real life there. You will find the fact. BTW, do you work with Indian people???
The first time when I heard that 'the Winnie the Pooh is banned in China', I was like, wtf, wait, when, how, where? Then sent some memes to my friend on Wechat and posted pics on social media, waiting for someone to buy me a cup of tea, but disappointedly, nothing happened. I don't understand why this is constantly mentioned by the western media without any proof.
If you're not satisfied with being told by someone else what you can and cannot see on the internet, and want to see the glorious Winnie the Poo memes, consider using our VPN!
VPNs are illegal in China without paperwork
While we don't endorse usage where the jurisdiction doesn't allow for it, it would be fair to say that any VPN that went through the proper channels to get the paperwork done would almost certainly fall within the same rules imposed upon all other software services, which would defeat the purpose. Hypothetically speaking - if you wanted to peer out, or do something outside of the watchful eyes, you'd likely not want to have what you are doing logged and reported back.
@@Mutation666 in fact you have too much freedom to use VPN in China as long as you dont want to destroy your country
@@Mutation666 no. You literally just install it before boarding the plane.
Mutation666 in big city like Beijing or Shanghai , almost all office building have VPN , and sometimes you can even connect automatically when you get in to that building .
China will go from not being connected to the Internet to dominating it. Chinese Internet companies are going global and this trend will accelerate in future.
@sarah razi - yes it’s scary.
Like , tiktok , wechat, qq, Baidu all chinese takeover of the world
China can dominate only if other countries let it. If other countries start blocking your internet firms you will be restricted in your own great wall of china.

China doesn't make it easy for people to access their websites from outside of China either. VPN is the best way to go.

Lenita A yes we do have it, same as every state that capable, it is a self defense system. However, US political doctrine is a super virus used as a offensive weapon in every regime change.
I don't think I want the Chinese incharge of anything. Global Internet, Ocean security, certainly not privacy.
Welp when I was visiting my grandparents with my family in China I still couldn’t access UA-cam without vpn
who cares... Chinese have the best internet content..
bullshit. I live in China and I can tell you that Chinese internet content SUCKS
because we think UA-cam is used by westers, the contents that UA-cam contained are not suitable to Chinese Watching, because it's full of English or other language instead of Chinese. Though we don't use it, we use the one that we built by ourselves.

hey,guys! I’m from China!.Do you think that I need some “freedom”?hhhhhh
well your concept of freedom is way different than western societies apply ... You certainly wouldn't understand unless you live in a western country...I'm from Peru and the time I've spent in China was generally awful people were surely racist to me because of my skin and complexity although there were few nice people who tried to help me at once and these people were the ones who spoke little english.....One concept of freedom is to be able to speak as you feel and say what you think....The times I've talked to chinese citizens they never tried to have an opinion on politics...Other concept related to freedom is private property and space...I felt really threatened when the local station tried to enter by force to my appartment just to take photos of me my signature and my data without asking for consent....In my country as a foreigner you would only need to provide data when needed or when filling official paper.. If it isn't required then you don't provide your data (and also this allows to protect your sensible data from bad people) .... Another concept of freedom is the pursue of truth and be able to question to have criteria to decide by yourself to empower yourself by your own means...Just simply I felt in China as a westerner it was just impossible ..... Because in my country I'm empowered to walk freely and have my own thoughts and express them I surely feel much better and if you think freedom is a value that isn't fundamental to societies to have....then there's a bigger value and that's truth...question yourself if you're able to speak and oppose what you don't like....If you're abe to question the CCP ....life can't be reasonable without truth......Then question yourself why your nationals migrate around the world and establish themselves in other countries ....In my country Peru which is located in latin america we have up o 1.5 million chinese citizens the third largest chinese diaspora outside of Asia (Just behind the US and Canada) and most of them have prosper resaurants but if they were so pleased in China why they moved abroad if they're commoners like most of us?

National postal services should compete with Facebook and google for better security and privacy issues as essentially Facebook / google are internet versions of the old postal services
They cannot compete, any more than apples can compete with pencils. They do different things. For one, postal services carry actual matter, while the internet and similar media only carry data.
In the one area where they are comparable, data delivery, the internet is vastly superior. It delivers more data, much more quickly, at an astronomically lower cost per bit, at an equal or greater level of reliability, to many more potential recipients (you can't get mail if you're homeless, but you can still get internet access).
The downfall of the Internet as we know it just began with Reddit's buyout.

No no no no don't get confused with internet and china's censored internet.
Censorship is not a big deal for China, those people who want the freedom of information will learn how to use VPNs, on the other hand, Chinese Tech-company will satisfy those people who don’t care about politics & freedom of information.
Considering currently situation, China government made a wise decision to establish its own network. Sometimes the policy has to be judged in longer term.
What exactly does it do for anyone?
I agree. You don't give your enemy an easy trojan horse. You make it hard. They learned from what happened in Hong Kong and even Taiwan what an alien culture can do to people. It will turn your own people into sellouts.

Why everything has to be in a westerners perspective..... China is more innovative than the west.....😂😂😂
well most inventions came from the west and even russia has sth to say....wat you do in china is reverse engineering and deconstruct western technology so as to build them by yourselves...I'm peruvian and I even know that I got to work in Shenzhen and I saw it by first hand...and whay you do is departing from western technologhy create evolutions of the same products...That's innovation true but you're not discovering new technologies you're just upgrading them to your own desires (and if you tak me about 5G it has also been developed in the west but not on the scale China proposes it)..Obviously that's blattant violation of copyright rules but as far as I'm concerned I've never saw in China any active law enforcement to prevent piracy....
