- The EP-133 is super special. It reminds me a lot of my vintage MPCs in that the KO-II's limitations are the spark to creativity. The one thing I love about it the most is the screen. Because it is so lackluster it actually makes it great, haha! Let's make a track from scratch using the EP-133!

I have been playing instruments for 15 years and this is my first electronic gear. Coming in the mail today.
That’s amazing! The PO-33 was my first piece of hardware. This of course is so much more than that was. Such a cool device. Bet you’ll love it!
I'm almost jealous you get to experience this device as a 'gateway'. It's so accessible and enjoyable to play around with. I've barely even sampled with it because I've been having enough fun making beats with the factory sounds. Plus I wanted to wait until the project export function was ready ;)
But between fun hands on gear like this and the wealth of free tuition on UA-cam there's never been a better time to get into making music :)
@@ColonelForkEyes I haven't played an instrument or produced in quite a while, although I have a Push 2 for Ableton, this is getting me back into the groove. It may not have sidechain, it may lack plenty of effects; but the simplicity of it.. God damn, I just imagine the step sequencer when playing around polyphonically while playing Phase Plant sampled patches and making a beat, then send the stems back to Ableton and finish the mix/fx there.
It also works for hip hop / lofi and am trying to get into it, coming from producing house since Ableton 7... This just made me realize that I'm getting older and time flies. Make the most of it everyone, don't doom on the current zeitgeist!

I love your videos, especially with this and the PO-33. People are so quick to hate on this because it doesn’t have “resampling” and all this other stuff 🙄 but TE always made it clear that it’s to have fun making music on the spot. It’s not made to be a full fledged dawless sampler with a ton of features and extras and can run on 4 AAA batteries. The limitations open up doors for more creativity, and with a natural flow. Plus have they even seen the full manual for this thing?? It’s crazy the amount of stuff you can do with the KO 2 if you actually go through it and learn its ins and outs. And they are constantly dropping updates for it too with new features. Props for you really getting a grip with it’s workflow cuz it’s helped me with mine 💯
I could have used this last week when I was working on my taxes. Where does the paper-roll go if you need a printed copy?

I also have the same outlook about the KOII. It reminds me of when I first started to make music (on a PlayStation). The limitations pushed me to make music that I doubt I would make using a full fat system. So its flaws are also what push you to make do and get creative 😎

This is a beautiful koala sampler in the box
the ko II always sounds so nice, and in literally all genres I can think of. It does miss a bunch of critical PO features like chain sequence/chopping/recordable perf fx and could absolutely use a bit of a power up for some of its limitations like no resampling, fader fx per group, one fx ONLY for the entire instrument, no reverse/loop sample... Good news it only uses one core out of its dual core cpu :) Great beat and you're already so good with the workflow !
once this has resampling lots of people will be really happy
and a damn song mode/sequencer! It NEEDS that function to be usable imo
I got it the first couple weeks “ scenes” is super stupid. There should be a step sequence function like the pos and a million other things they should start with resampling

Are you sampling these synths into the KOII though that single input via a midi splitter? Or do they run through an audio interface first?

Thanks! I don't have an EP-133, maybe I will try one from the second hand market. At the moment I have my two Korg EMX-1 and ESX-1 where I can do exactly that.
I'm waiting for the first synthesizer where they release in this series.

If I didn't have the circuit rhythm already I'd be all over this machine. The ko2 is technically is better, but covers a lot of the same territory. Imo though it looks way cooler than the rhythm. Love these kinds of videos, they remind me to use the gear I have and roleplay that I'm using newer cooler stuff 🤣
Hahaha! When I had the CR I made some wild music I normally wouldn’t too! Chopping by ear id hear new sounds within a sample
FYI, KVGear makes a "Key Dog" which I bought at KnobCon a couple years ago. It'll hold down a key for you. It's super useful for synths that don't have a latch/hold feature.

They could absolutely add in a 16 pads mode honestly, the keys are there. Also yes, its kind of annoying they launched it with missing half the features its little brother the po-33 got. Im hoping we get a substantial update for superbooth :) that... or the op-z field haha...

I don’t understand how you can just memorize a workflow that fast on any device, it’s like you pick a new device up and master it in 2 tries or something 😂
There's something about how T.E. designs stuff that's uniquely intuitive. When I first got the K.O. II I stared at it like "how am I ever going to make sense of this?" and then an hour later I'm cruising along like I've used it forever and my hands just know what to do. It's hard to explain, but it almost like trains you how to use it as you go. Very cool.

Correct me if I’m wrong, please, but it looks like you’re having an RME ARC sitting on your desk. I’m curious: are you happy with it, using it with your Fireface UCX II and the TotalMix software?

I do like the functionality that it adds. The one thing I was mainly trying to solve, was switching between headphone volume and master volume.
Pro tip: all of totalmix can be midi mapped! So you might be able to map it with a controller you have laying around!

Tempted to buy this. Can you assign velocity to drum samples like you can with an MPC?
The velocity only applies on the pressure you put on a pad. Or you can copy and paste the sample and adjust the volume (AMP) for each one. Similar to the PO-33 so the memory of the sample volume stays in that specific pad/button.

It's the complete opposite experience for me. I literally never sample with it. It's purely a MIDI sequencer, and a very good one! It makes building up tracks a breeze.

Excellent. How do you learn such a device so fast! Is this because you know the Pocket Operators? Insane. Could you do something similar on the Digitakt?
Totally, you could make this style of music on any sampler. But I did in this video isn’t too difficult to achieve. And there isn’t really anything that the EP did that others cannot do. There are some features and functionality it has that are better than others, but I didn’t really flex them in this video.

When you pitch down a chord, does it change the key? Dumb question I know.
If the song is major, if the chord is starting on the (I) you can pitch the chord +0, +5, +7, -5, or -7 semitones and it will still fit the key.
Because a major key has 3 major chords in it (I, IV, and V) starting on the 0, 5, 7th semitones, so you have three options to pitch shift a major chord.
Same for minor keys.
i hope novation responds to this in their groovebox line. polyphonic sampler. that keys mode is what makes it so playable

KO is fun but limited; 404 is a beast
It really depends on your goal. If you want to sequence external gear using midi, that’s not possible on the SP. Also on the SP, it can step sequence and make a beat like a groove box but it’s a bit more cumbersome.
If you’re trying to process and run it through a bunch of facts and do a ton of sampling, the SP wins.
If you want to make a beat like a groove box and do some sequencing and simple sampling. The EP wins.

my SP sends out notes to one four-voice analog synth and one analog drum machine at the same time and I haven't noticed any limitations.

I'm really surprised, considering the pretty decent firmware support so far, they didn't fix that threshold record button hold thingy. It's not like the community hasn't been complaining about it since day one either. TE please fix this ASAP as it's killing my flow!

I have a SP-404SX. Should I still buy a KO II? Want some opinions from someone who owns both.
It really depends on your goals. I use them both completely differently. If I’m just trying to make a track from scratch like I did in this video I would not do it on an SP 404. It’s just such a different workflow that I personally am not used to. I like using it more for effects and processing sounds rather than sequencing a beat. And if you ever want to do Mitty sequencing of external gear, you cannot do that on an SP.
@@RickyTinez Thanks for sharing. Yeah I share the same feeling. I like the sounds and effects of 404 but everything else has been a pain for me. I tend to waste so much energy on the prep work that little is left to actually make the beat. On the other hand, once I made the beat (either on 404 or DAW), I absolutely love playing it on 404 and punch in the effects.
@@RickyTinez I think the Roland company will really take offense at you for blathering about the midi limitations of the SP, because the mk2 handles notes in sequences for different devices just fine.

Model Cycles or KO !! ?
Model:cycles is pretty much abandonware, no update in 3-4 years and a recent price drop whereas ko II is confirmed to being worked on and updates have already been added to it since its release.

The os is very taunting on the cycles but the synth engine is beautiful
ep 133 is a sampler it samples only 64 Mb of ram and no SD card you need a pc to off load your samples

Go with a used Roland sp 404 mkii (a bit more $) it’s more of a professional all around workstation like the akai mpc

@@HIFI1965 I would disagree. Sus chords aren't just a lack of 3rd, they're the addition of the 4th or 2nd *in place of* the 3rd.
More importantly, they also don't *function* as a sus; there's no internal tension to resolve. Normally the lack of a third would just mean it's a B5 chord, but that's normally for power chords without much else. There's enough extra harmonic flavor here to count that out.
I would just listen to the context to decide if there's a defined key to call it a dominant 9 or a minor 9. Or just call it an F#m/B.

I like the way it sounds but the workflow is infuriating. But if they would just implement resample that would elleviate like 80% of my frustrations with it. But until it gets that, I've gone back to my other samplers.
