I may be biased as a goalie myself, but believe the game has outgrown the trapezoid. Players are universally fast enough now to negate any advantage the goalies once had in going to play puck in the corner. I think it’s elimination would lead us to seeing goalies become more offensively minded. A full generation of the trapezoid has dramatically reduced the number of goalies willing to really “play” the puck like Turco, DiPietro, and Smith did and getting rid of it would bring some offense flair back to the position
I agree. It made sense for them to do it to come out of the gate with higher scoring after the lockout, but now with the higher skill game it could make for more fun plays both for and against the goalies willing to play the puck like that.
As a goalie, I actually enjoy this modern offense-focused era. It's more fun to get lots of shots, and you don't feel as bad when you let in a goal knowing that your team will probably score a few more.
I remember some time ago, I stumbled upon footage from a 1979-1980 game and it's absolutely crazy how slow players were back then. Not only were they not skating fast, they themselves seemes slow to understand where to go. Everything felt broken and, to be honest, quite boring. Aside from the absolutely barrage of ads we now have everywhere, I'd say everything else in the NHL has gotten much, much better
Totally agree. I would add that play by play and colour commentary used to be better on average. One thing I noticed while watching a bunch of old games for this, was just how much the commentators hyped up the game. They sounded like there was nowhere they would rather be, and nothing they’d rather be doing. Genuinely added so much to the “spectacle.” I was aware that most of today’s crews don’t resonate with me, and that I liked the voices of old better… But I didn’t realize just how much they added to the atmosphere in comparison. Makes many of today’s sound like newscasters doin’ a job.
@@District5-YT thats why im happy to be québécois, we have pierre Houde, Who is now a hockey hall of famer, and when hé comment A HABS game we see his passion
Would like to see 2 more players on the bench. Instead of having a system across the entire team because of different d pairing and line match ups teams could play with 4 entirely independent 'units'. The extra 2 players are for d, who would never have to work with an alternative line, this would increase unit synergy, and allow coaches to have 4 completely different styles of play, would make line matching far more interesting. Theres also the benefit of extra fitness with d potentially able to exert more energy over shorter ice time, keeping the game faster right to the end even with a busy schedule.
I don't know how crazy of an idea this is but I'd make the goal just q little bit bigger. And maybe make the NHL ring size same as in international play , to give talented offensive players more space to operate and showcase their skating and puck moving
Overall I think the game is trending upwards. The players are skating faster and shooting harder than ever. The goalies are still getting better at playing a more blocking (rather than athletic) style of goalie. We are seeing a new era of offensive defence men with Cale Makar. Enforcers are being eliminated in favour of more skilled players. And safety is being prioritized. These are all good for the game in my view.
Two changes I'd like to see: I wish the League would ditch the coaches challenge. It's excruciating. Also, change the points awarded for regulation, overtime and shoot out wins to a 3 points for regulation win, 2 points for an overtime win (1 point for the loser) and one point for a shoot win (0 for the loser). That would make for better 3rd period hockey and eliminate the illusion of parity in the standings and perhaps make for better playoff matchups . Some of these games drag on very late, we'd see less goals called back and maybe a bit more offense later in games.
Interesting video, well done. I grew up playing goal in the 1970s and one aspect of the equipment that is seldom mentioned is that the chest and arm protection was like wearing a quilt. Very little protection or size; I used to come home from every practice or game with multiple bruises. It definitely was another factor in discouraging lowering more of your body into the line of fire in the butterfly style. With modern equipment and technique I was a far, far better goalie in my forties than I ever was in my teens. One nitpick if you don't mind; at around 20:24 you use the word reactionary. Reactionary means ultraconservative in the political sense: pertaining to, marked by, or favoring reaction, especially extreme conservatism or rightism in politics; opposing political or social change. The word you want is reactive meaning tending to react.
I wouls like to see the NHL adopt the 'Hybrid' sized rink which has become common in KHL. Its in between NHL and European sized rinks and would be a happy medium.
@5:00 technically those are snap shots. I would be very interested to see people try dome snappers with a wood or aluminum stick. Low flex is key for them to get that sweet snap at the end and increase shot speed. Great video
I was just thinking the other day that if Stuart Skinner were transported back in time and placed in net for the 80s Oilers they’d have won a lot more cups solely because Goalies now are on average significantly better than Goalies then.
In terms of goalie pads, ice size, yes. 3 on 3 OT should be expanded. Goalie Interference needs to be a concrete rule. Player Safety needs to be consistent in suspensions. Those moving ads need to go. Offside reviews should be done with high speed cameras. Hybrid icing isn't perfect. There's also the problem with the younger players not knowing or expecting to get hit in open ice.
Interesting video, I can speak to the goalie stuff as I was a wannabe goalie skills coach back when they shrunk the goalie gear about 12 - 15 years ago. The lower leagues had to start 2 years before it became official in the NHL We lost a lot of goalies because of the expense. Old goalie equipment was worthless. It filled dumpsters. Goalies couldn't buy up easily, there was no used gear - had to buy this new garbage back ordered for ridiculous prices Patrick Laine said he originally was a goalie and then his father couldn't keep up with the expense The pads, blockers, trappers, masks all shrunk Goalies could no longer wear larger jerseys than needed, couldn't double and triple tape their paddles- goalies will take any centimeter advantage to stop that puck, NHL caught onto it. They were also supposed to do away with "ghost goalies" no more white jerseys -they're more difficult to see - harder to find the holes behind the goalie I'm surprised Tampa is able to stay that way but it might look different on ice When the changes hit the nhl, goal-scoring increased by about 35 - 40 %. Can't remember what year that was. 🤔 The goalie gear also went from being defensive, big pads to protect the goalie - to offensive. Much more precisely angled pads, blockers even trappers are designed to rebound more efficiently I'd be interested to know if goalie *assists on goals* statistics have increased. Goalies are off in the fourth touch away from a goal so they don't get the assist statistic. But now they might with this new gear that can control rebounds to the point where they're creating breakaway situations for their team As goalie coaches, we had to pull kids off the butterfly - even older athletes because it blew out knees. So the hybrid style kicked back in This was an interesting video - I'm going to watch it again. Too bad modern fans can't see the evolution of the game - Fans don't even know that at one point goalies had to stand up. They weren't allowed to fall down I think Tim Thomas is going to be the last goalie under 6 ft that walks away with the Stanley Cup. Thanks.
Agree with everything but the under 6ft cup winner. If you’re looking at the new age goalie prospects they’re getting increasingly smaller and smaller. And are playing better than the big guys. The game is changing and going back to small goalies
@Isaias-v3x it'll be interesting to watch whether goalies under 6' end up doing okay. 5'11" is not a lot of wall to block a net. And it boils down to smaller gear sometimes They generally can't scorpion post to post Shorter goalies get pulled out of position more easily, they can be more injury-prone in different ways then the big boys who always need hip surgery by 32 years old. We've got these big boys coming out of Eastern Europe. Not many under 6 ft 2 in Tim was a special breed! Lol! He got his best NHL training playing in Europe. It'll be interesting to watch.
14:46 to me, it appears the Neutral Zone Trap is 100% still around, and used by teams lacking explosive high-acceleration skaters to defend against other high-acceleration skaters. The difference is now its morphed into something I've heard called the Blue Line Trap. Basically the same defensive setup as the NZT, except you have your 3 or 4-man defense element lined up sliding back from the blue line and your forechecker pushing play all the way through the neutral zone. The forechecker is used to force deep passing into waiting defenders while also remaining open for quick breakouts.
Thank you for this video dude. Ive been saying this stuff for a while. Little side tangent to follow: The other day on a post about Ovechkin being hurt some inappropriately territorial Canadians were celebrating because they dont want him to pass Gretzky and say he'll never be as good. For one that's just dreadful sportsmanship and a lack of humanity. Ovechkin being an incredible player today does not make Gretzky any less special, and sour grapes like that over something as stupid as where you were born is just a bad look. I shot back with a lot of the points you said, especially that "the 1980s were a time before goalies were expected to stop shots." But really the whole "Who is better" argument is so flawed. What does matter about players is how good they are compared to their contemporaries. You can never take away these evolutions in technology, advances in knowledge and years of data and techniques. But you can always compare the people against their own contemporaries and see how much better they were than average. Greatest of All Time is a really dumb idea. Greatest of Their Time is the award we should be concerned with.
Agreed. Yeah, people who deny evolution will never cease to amaze me. Would they rather have the medical staff, and medical equipment from 1980 too? Perhaps these folks have the CTE, that probably "doesn't exist" in their eyes. Lol.
At least the NHL has stayed true to itself unlike the NBA which is completely ruined. NBA is as bad now as hockey would be if you wouldn’t be allowed to tackle anyone and if player’s sticks weren’t allowed to touch other player’s stick.
Would love to hear your take on whether the blue lines and offside should be removed, weird recurring argument I keep having with people that say it wouldn't be a rule if you designed hockey from the ground up today, I could go either way on it, but it would be really really weird
What kinda e-sport are people trying to turn this shit into? The game was infinitely better when two line passing wasn't allowed, made players think about how to get the puck into the offensive zone. Why do all american sports need to act as gooner fuel for people with no attention span? You're not even allowed to have draws anymore, everything has to have a "winner" since yous can't fathom the idea that two teams of equally professional athletes could just be equally matched..
I'm good with offsides. Though I think these review rules need some tinkering. I'm all for calling the rules as they are. But at the same time, there's so much human error in other parts of the game that no one cares about. 10 ft behind the red line? "Meh.. Don't worry about icing or reviews. Fire it in." Crosscheck someone 5 times? "Nah you're good. No need to look that over." So why is being a hair offside taken so seriously? The refs are shockingly good at getting it right most of the time. So if they miss it, like they "miss" countless other aspects. So be it. Or at the very least, negate the play being eligible for review after the puck has been in the zone for 10-20 seconds. 10-15 rules I would change video coming soon-ish though haha.
I was a pretty strong player, so wood sticks gave me a good feel for the puck and I got off good wrist shots and slap shots. The composite sticks, I never got a great feel for it and accuracy suffered even if my wrist shot got a bit faster. But the biggest difference was if I snapped a wooden Louisville, no big deal. I had gotten 3 of them for 35 bucks. But one stick costing 200? It got crazy. They are even more now.
Casual fan here , just started watching hockey religiously 2022… so stupid question, how Winnipeg Jets originally relocated to Arizona when the jets been around and Coyotes are Utah??
The original Winnipeg Jets relocated to Arizona and became the Coyotes (1996). Then later the Atlanta Thrashers relocated to Winnipeg (2011) and they called them the Jets (again).
Aluminum sticks weren't used until very late 80's, like maybe 88 or 89 for the NHL but from my memory being in youth hockey then. I believe that it was 90/91 when the Aluminum sticks were introduced
I think if you're going to talk about time traveling a modern 4th liner back to the eighties you also need to talk about how generational talents would likely be generational no matter when they enter the league. If Wayne was born in 2000 he would still be the best hockey player on earth because he would have access to all the training and equipment advances. Someone who is that far ahead of his peers is not just due to bad goaltending.
Your argument about modern sticks being durable seems to completely ignore the fact that they aren’t. I bet it drives coaches crazy when a player on the PK gets his stick shattered when it’s completely avoidable if he uses a higher flex.
I honestly think it’s good or else you would just have a bunch of tired players and less intensity vs a quick line change and possible a quick transition up the ice with full intensity.
Good VIdeo, but it dances around the obvious. If the NHL really wanted to bring back goal scoring on a larger scale, the solution is and always has been simple: Make the nets bigger.
goaltenders today aren't the same as they were in the 2010s and same goes for defenseman its pretty simple. the reason why the 2010s was so low scoring was because of all the grit, defense and goaltending teams had and ever since the covid shortened 2020-2021 season with gen z taking over and millennials retiring the game has been softer physically and easier for scoring
Scoring is up because the game has become softer than baby shit. No one plays defense. You're not allowed to touch anyone in front of the net any more. No one hits anyone. The nhl is pond hockey now

Scoring doesn't make the game any better, neither do shootouts or controlling the league's image by dressing professional athletes, i.e. uneducated mouthbreathers, in suits. The post-lockout (04) league has been nothing but a lackluster marketing exercise. I'll take a 0-0 draw from the dead puck era over any modern game.
the late 1990s to the late 2010s was when the game was the most entertaining and intense to me cause of how good goaltending was and how tough the league as a whole was. I agree ever since covid the league has been much softer and scoring has been too high. I never thought their would be times where their was too much scoring but over the last 3 ish years i've come to change my approach on it
I mean yes there are some guys who aren’t very smart in the nhl but you could say that about any profession. Also it seems like you’re saying uneducated as if formal education is the only way to train and learn. It’s not that hard memorizing formulas yes some degree are very taxing and difficult time wise but you’re not that special. It’s pretty damn hard to make the nhl which is why you’re commenting on UA-cam instead of a professional athlete. I’m sure the first thing they do after practice is complain about some random video on UA-cam.
Also using latin abbreviations doesn’t make you better or smarter it takes two seconds to look up and memorize it’s just that most people don’t need to know how to use it. I guarantee any nhl player is exponentially more impressive than you.
@AdamOBrien-d1z Tais mennä Aatamilla pikkasen tunteisiin? I bet you're one of those americans who says they're Irish (; Also, you'd have to be an uneducated mouthbreather to have to look up something as rudimentary as 'i.e.', since that is precisely the sort of stuff you learn in school at elementary level. Or am I giving the american education system too much credit by assuming that they actually teach you lot anything useful? That's alright too, the world needs numbnuts to play professional sports.

Why can't you just google that? All that information is widely available on the internet, accessible *instantly*
the trapezoid gotta go
Aluminum sticks weren't used until very late 80's, like maybe 88 or 89 for the NHL but from my memory being in youth hockey then. I believe that it was 90/91 when the Aluminum sticks were introduced
Avg sv% was about .916 11y ago. It's .904 now.
Interesting. Think it's due to more shot blocks? Players are better at burying scoring opportunities now?
That's when they started restricting goalie equipment size
I think if you're going to talk about time traveling a modern 4th liner back to the eighties you also need to talk about how generational talents would likely be generational no matter when they enter the league. If Wayne was born in 2000 he would still be the best hockey player on earth because he would have access to all the training and equipment advances. Someone who is that far ahead of his peers is not just due to bad goaltending.
I wouldn't mind an even smaller center ice area. Then move icing back to the defensive end. Then make icing a penalty instead of a face-off.
9:15 who dat
WHA, not WHL
Oops! 😅
Your argument about modern sticks being durable seems to completely ignore the fact that they aren’t. I bet it drives coaches crazy when a player on the PK gets his stick shattered when it’s completely avoidable if he uses a higher flex.
I think the next thing the NHL needs to do is free icing the puck on PK. Fucking hate that shit
I honestly think it’s good or else you would just have a bunch of tired players and less intensity vs a quick line change and possible a quick transition up the ice with full intensity.
i do not agree with "more goal is better hockey" argument.. or "more goal is more fun"... its depends.
😂
So you're saying Gretzky is a fraud ?
He played against fat alcoholic chain smokers so maybe?
Not a fraud but I'd say Lemieux has an edge on him a bit considering he was able to put impressive numbers up even going into the dead puck era
Scoring is up because the game has become softer than baby shit. No one plays defense. You're not allowed to touch anyone in front of the net any more. No one hits anyone. The nhl is pond hockey now
John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
We didn't come to a HOCKEY video for PREACHING! God doesn't even exist, so go somewhere else please, with all dew respect.
@@HenrichW why wont you respect somebodys religion? even if it is annoying you need to understand that god wants us to preach about him and christianity. if it is annoying then keep it to yourself. do better man❤️
@@HenrichW Hang on...I likely know why this comment ended up here. Accidentally
There was a religious short, before this video came up next in the algorithm for me also
It went from that religious short to this video
It was actually kind of cool 30 second video. Not preachy. Different.
They probably wrote the comment while they were watching that short and then it flipped over to this video.
It's happened to me. Someone else under the comment thread will tell me I'm crazy and then I'll see what they're talking about. Comments land under the wrong video.
But, they're expressing themselves without being censored. I support that.
Nobody put you under the Chinese water torture forcing you to read this comment
You are of the same cloth- you both asserted your opinions on religion.
We didn't need to hear that out of you either.
But you got your opinion out there, and I respect that also
But c'mon, this is hockey.
we all bleed red
The only time we get on each other's arses if you're not producing on ice.
Or if you're a Leaf fan!

@@jonemolsa3442 no thanks god doesn't exist in my "religion"/opinion, I am expressig my opinion as he was expressing his, just maybe a little more assertive.
@@TheFoolintherainn ok, that makes sense, or maybe hes a bot, there are a surpsing amount of bots that do that.
@AdamOBrien-d1z Tais mennä Aatamilla pikkasen tunteisiin? I bet you're one of those americans who says they're Irish (;
Also, you'd have to be an uneducated mouthbreather to have to look up something as rudimentary as 'i.e.', since that is precisely the sort of stuff you learn in school at elementary level. Or am I giving the american education system too much credit by assuming that they actually teach you lot anything useful? That's alright too, the world needs numbnuts to play professional sports.
