I think we will see another Ovi for sure at some point. Doubtful we will ever see another Wayne Gretzy because of the assists. I know we are not comparing the 2, but Ovi is all about scoring goals... one day we will see another kid in the league who scores goals like he has. Matthews in Toronto already.....who knows where his career is going in terms of goals scored but again, Wayne.... not only record setting all time goals, but all those asists.... its nuts. He would still be the all time point leader in the history of the NHL if you took all his goals away.
Why helmet ads
NHL needs to start PUTTING THESE ADS IN PERSON IT'S SO FUN
Massive kudos to this channel for your in-depth look at a topic most hockey people probably never think about. While you covered more aspects of how handedness affects play than I ever would have thought of, one you didn’t consider was how handedness and skating crossover skills are interlinked. If a player is right-dominant, they are more likely to have stronger crossover skills when crossing right. If they also shoot right, they will have more opportunities to use their crossover to accelerate towards the net and release a quick, powerful right-handed shot. However, if they are right-dominant and skating towards the net with a left crossover, the crossover is likely to have diminished speed and overall stability compared to their right crossover. In fact, they may not even use the left crossover because they are more confident and capable of skating straight towards the net. The result is a less-than-optimal ability to accelerate past a defenseman and release a shot. This is the story of my beer-league hockey life (now retired). I’m right-dominant and shoot left. Try as I might to improve my left crossover, it was never good enough for me to drive aggressively past a defenseman with increasing speed and shoot on the goal. To compensate, I turned my focus to being shifty and more of a playmaker than a shooter. This brings me to another point. You mentioned there are more left-shooting than right-shooting players in the NHL, including at the upper skill levels. I wonder if this is because right-dominant lefty shooters frequently need to compensate for their relative weakness in driving to the net using their left crossover by developing other skills, such as stick handling and passing. The easy ability to accelerate towards the net and release a powerful shot is huge, but perhaps it’s also an impediment to wider skill development.
I Don't care about the grilling I'll get here... but it's heartbreaking for someone like me who loves hockey... has played hockey in Mexico, Czech Republic and Taiwan... is a huge fan and passionate about the sport... to see someone like Oveckin being celebrated the way he is... In the states you always say don't mix the game with Politics... but should not be the players we follow and perceive as heroes and row models, represent the values that the sport and league, not to mention Human bloody decency be reflected upon them and therfore hold a higher standard? So how come a scumbag Putin supporter is being idolise as one of the best players in the league? Keapernick and Pete Rose were crucified... why do we treat Oveckin like a hero? Sad... very freaking sad... 🙏🙏🙏🏒🏒🏒
I think anything that causes a fraction of a delay or difference can make a big difference. But really though Goaltending is more about positioning rather than tricking someone where your pads start and stop.
If they start blood testing in the NHL you’ll never see another player like him.
ice hockey would be an amazing sport to follow if only we could see the puck
I agree with Jon Cooper. Also youre on the road and yoir job is to do business and go home
Uh yeah. You're seeing one right now in Auston Matthews. Both of these players are playing in a league without hitting, holding, or obstruction. There's nothing to impede them from scoring like there was to the previous generation of NHL players. If Ovie played in the 1990's, he would have missed games due to concussions, torn ACLs, and all sorts of nasty stuff. No way does he score 800+ goals playing in Pavel Bure's era.
I LOVE coming back to video to discover more tidbits about certain players after watching them play the night before. Great video, thanks for putting this together. Next time I watch Connor Bedard play I'll watch his hands more closely...
50 goals in a season is an outstanding season. But 900 = 18*50. 18 seasons at an outstanding level, 18 years, thats incredible

Your videos are absolutely heads and shoulders above other hockey channels. Incredible content man
Yes my NHL 24 Be a Pro character lol.
Great vid. I learned a lot, and have even greater respect for Ovechkin.
So many of these hits look like straight up elbowing, because again, the puck carriers back is turned so he really doesn't know where the defender is coming in from
Loob, Mullen, Fleury, St. Louis (drafted), & Gaudreau. We sure do have a habit of finding short kings eh? #GoFlamesGo 🔥 #ForeverAFlame 🔥
I’m a right hander that shoots left. And switch hits in baseball.
Its how quick the decision you take either give your team and advantage or not that makes hockey the fastest sport. Every single movement should be calculated to benefit your position on the ice for your team. So as far as speed goes hockey.. F1 .. mma ... soccer is not even a subject worth conversating its not a man's sport
Bloody mad Russian! Ahaha, yes a good video, but we the Soviets were never happy with the your BArbarious style hockey in the NOrth America. What to do. IN Russia there is a saying - Wanna live with wolves, howl like wolves.
I'm right handed. (My non-dominant hand is at the top of my stick.) Left up top, right in the middle. My son who is left handed shoots the same as me, left hand up top. 🤷
I feel like you ignore poor decisions by GMs and them not being able to see the future. Buffalo is managed terribly.
I'm a right shot d that writes right handed throws right handed but when I'm on the Ice I prefer to be on the left side God what a mess
Already a thing here in Carolina. The Rangers have such a massive amount of transplant fans here that our barn is basically 50/50 when they play here
Your way of argumentation and point-proving are unscientific man. You are taking minor differences in stats which some are probably just by chance and then making your point out of a fixed narrative that home ice must be less of importance than before. I think the favorable penalties graph disproves your point here. If leafs, Canucks and flames have favorable penalties way above average that is their home-ice advantage. What likely have happened over the years iron, are that instead of 10+ teams having outlier favorable penalty score now there are only 3 or 4. The refs have simply been less bias ie better. You are overcomplicated this topic
Visiting locker rooms are just as nice. But most importantly, especially in hockey, the rinks are pretty much identical. In the 70s and 80s, the rinks weren't all the same size. They were often off by a few inches. Which may not sound like much but in a game of inches, that makes a huge difference. Ray Ferraro talked about this multiple times. Regarding fans: In the NHL, fans don't have an impact. Certainly not as much as in European leagues. Fans in North America are quiet. They go minutes without even making noise. It's so boring.
Amazing video. Truly is an anomaly. Thank you bro
He has one cup win. Clearly something was wrong. Sorry but I just don't agree.
Right Handed, Shot right in school, was always one of the best shooter and best grinder, when i joined a hockey league for 2 years i had the most accurate wrist shot of my team with very little effort. Right hand gives you better accuracy, more power on wrist , better pass at receiving passes and is best for taking face offs.
Im a lefty. both me and my goalie partner catch right but he is actually right handed. when i play player though i shoot left, meaning i swap hands when using a player stick. we both played baseball first and caught with our right hands so maybe thats what happened???
13:24. Goosebumps
Wonderful video, thanks and greetings from Kazakhstan 🇰🇿! I have two memories with Ovi, that was like, oh my god, did really do this??? 1. 2008/2009 IIHF WC Championship at Germany. 11 years old me watching hockey, and I was like: “dad, are there any other players in Russia than Ovi?” “Are they missing someone, so he had to replace?”. And my dad, who saw prime Soviet era hockey and Russian Five at their peak was like “Ovi is a hockey!”. He was doing everything, at it was the feeling of elite job at any aspect of his game: shooting, skating, body checking, defensive play, leadership… that was a pleasure 2. Ovi vs Svechnikov fight when Caps got their cup, round 2 I guess. Wow, that was a hell of the fight by Ovi, don’t remember any of the elite scorers or players being able to fight in this manner. Once again, great video, thank you so much! P.S. did not check your channel fully but as a Russian speaking fan I can not get away from Ovi without talking about Malkin. As I know in North America 00-10’s era often is viewed as Ovi vs Krosby rivalry while in Russia it is often referred as Ovi and Malkin comparison. So just a suggestion for you to look at Malkin and may be find some storylines to share: 1. Malkin and Ovi: comparison, similarities or opposites? 2. Malkin and Sid: one of the best duos in NHL? Were they a duo or rather just two star players at the one club? Are there any similar cases when two franchise-level players constitute the dynasty at one club?
I played goalie until age 60 and I always wore white pads with red white and blue stripes. I figured that, regardless of the team color, who is against red, white, and blue. It’s unAmerican. I purchased pads used or tried by pro goalies which I could get at a lower price (half) compared to new gear. What I will say is that weight, fit, and protective qualities of my gear seemed to have a much greater impact than color (to me personally). My last pro pads were unbelievably light, my mask, custom-made by Tukka Rask’s designer was very light and fit perfectly and was another great expenditure for a goalie I believe. And, combined with a composite stick, changed my game especially as I was in my mid to late 50’s and speed needed all the help that it could get. Use of the heavier sticks were a help in my early career because I they quickly built up arm strength which is essential. However, in closing, goalies are strange ducks, if I don’t say so myself. Anything that gives you a mental advantage is priceless. In addition, great gear kept me from getting injured. I had no fear of the puck or any player’s shot which also helps. This was a great video!!!! Thank you very much!
It's true the Soviet Union educational system forced left-handed students to write with their right hand. My father told me this. He was a left-handed who'd write with his right hand. But when I was in the initial school in the mid 70s we could choose which hand to write with. Also, when I was about 12 yo I taught myself to write with a non-dominant hand, then shoot the puck or throw/kick a ball with a non-dominant limb. It felt weird at first, but it was fun and helped me a lot in life later on. I guess, I've turned myself into a true ambidextrous person thanks to my late father
What about ice quality? I always felt a team like the Rangers were at a disadvantage for having to play so many games on the crappy MSG ice.
Probably will be another ovechkin at some point, just a matter of time we never thought we’d have a guy challenge Gretzky record but here we are
Simply said. No
This is a masterclass video Alexander Semin had one of the most devastating wrist shots ever seen. Especially when he would drag it
When Ovechkin and Crosby first came in to the league, the NHL went crazy with the amount of marketing they gave these two stars. Even before they played a game, the NHL was calling them generational talents and hyping up a budding rivalry that would set the league ablaze. The NHL went all in on these two, overhyping them to the point where they were almost certainly setting them up for failure. It turns out the NHL knew what they were talking about. Somehow, even with mind bogglingly insane expectations, both superstars performed even better than expectations! We got everything the marketing promised and more. As a Caps fan, watching Ovechkin's career has been so stupidly fun, he just brought so much energy and life in to this team. He's just such an exciting player, and he's been so ridiculously consistent season to season. It's been a wild ride and I love it.
So blind side reverse hits cause injuries. Don't blind side body checks cause injuries also?
The fact home and away supporters sit together in american sport is an absolute travesty. The reason home advantage is waining is because people are sitting there sharing beers and going "booo! Go team!' Get some ultra groups, some pyro, separate the fans with nets, start chanting about dead players and you'll soon see what a fortress a stadium can become
I think interference needs to be called if the puck is not within reach of the player being obstructed. A lot of these hits are done with the puck sort of left behind as the hitter focuses on the check, and at that point the player getting hit has no chance of making a play on the puck. The puck carrier should absolutely be allowed to hit back, but the puck better be right there for the taking.
