Beautiful murals around the area. There's so much talent whether it be art, music, etc. It's a vibrant neighborhood, especially during the spring/summer when there are festivals with salsa music and dancing. I love El Barrio...thanks for a great post, Manny!
Thank you for making this video. I will be coming to New York in three days, staying on East 100 Street, so this is really helpful for me to see the neighborhood. I love the vibe, beautiful murals and the architecture! I am coming from California and will be in New York for nine days. I don’t like doing touristy things, just want to experience New York on a real local level. Can’t wait!
Grew up in Brownsville Brooklyn, but Spanish Harlem was my first love. For a young Latino paradise. The women in the spring, dios mio. In the 70s I used to attend as Latin school of music. Played congas. Forgot the name If anyone remembers please let me know if still open.
Hey, Manny, wuzup bro, big fan of yours thanks for posting east Harlem EL Barrio. you should visit in the summer its kicking then thanks again brother .
El Barrio! The summer festivals there are the best. Never gets old. Thanks for sharing great content of once again neighborhoods that not many cover. Keep exploring Manny and exposing our culture as deserved. ☺️That’s the Lares flag and guess who’s from there? My momma. I lived there as a kid and went to school there as well. El pueblo de las mujeres más hermosas they call it. They’re NOT lying😜lol.
Thats great that your mom is from the beautiful town of Lares, I love the summer festivals in East Harlem, and I love covering places that not too many people cover, thats where you get the real NY feel.
I have a question for you. My wife and I are planning on buying an apartment in East Harlem because we like the spanish influence. We are mexican and are being told that it could actually be a problem because I guess puerto ricans and mexicans don't get along I guess? I've never heard of that but just wanted to know some more info on it considering you grew up in that neighborhood. Thanks man!
@@vicenteesparza8867 the problem that people from Mexico have with those from Puerto Rico is that the former cannot bear that while they can be deported, those from Puerto Rico are born with United States citizenship. The rest of the animosity occurs because the emigration of people from Mexico is already too much, and even the Americans themselves feel displaced.
Absolutely beautiful and enjoyable vlog Manny, thank you for the informative tour, your joie de vivre never goes unnoticed, stay safe. Peace and blessings Namaste 🌻🦋
Love your facemask Manny. Hope it's designed for protection not just looks. That used to be my neighborhood. I lived on 104th bet 3rd and Lex and worked around the corner, 3rd Ave bet 104th and 105th. You mentioned Tito Puente. His mother, Ercidia Ortiz, was a native of San Germán, my hometown in Puerto Rico. According to Tito himself she was his biggest influence, the one who helped and motivated him the most to pursue a career in music. If only so he could stop driving her crazy by hitting the pots and pans in her kitchen. 😀 Thanks for sharing buddy. Loved seeing my old hood once again. Regards from Puerto Rico. Be safe.🇵🇷.
My hood. Spa Harlem, where I grew up. So good to see these streets anytime. I love it. You are right about the talent from the area. I grew up in the 80s and 90s and there were so many ppl. I grew up with that are very well known in entertainment and other industries...right from the projects. I left NYC in 2006 and I still miss it like crazy. Great video. T/U
I keep on hearing this term spa ha everywhere. I'm not even from New York City but I was brought there as a baby visiting with my grandparents to visit my grandfather's sister who ended up passing away in the 90s. However even I know even when my grandparents were children Spanish Harlem was still Spanish Harlem. One day I plan to visit and just take in the history of the neighborhood before it becomes a thing of the past. I pray that they still call the neighborhood Spanish Harlem given that there's other Hispanic minorities besides Puerto Ricans living in the neighborhood to at least keep the legacy going on
My whole neighborhood's filled with Puerto Rican dancing around with those pointy toed shoes smoking those South of the Border butts, and playing that damn music. To all hours of the night damn a PR
Awesome video bro.. I watched this as I just read a book on this community called - In search of Respect. Hope to get to New York one day!! If I do, you should take me for a tour lol.. Cheers bro, from New Zealand!

One of Manhattan's beautiful neighborhoods. That is East Harlem. I still feel bad though hearing the Burger King robbery that the took the life of the beautiful young women. I do hope NYPD would do full speed in solving the case.
Nice walk Manny! Love the brownstones. As a DC native, I still think of New York in general as high rises and apartment buildings. I know there are single family homes neighborhoods also. Another thing I've noticed that, yes like you said, it seems New York's keeping the old high rise apartment buildings and other buildings, some being renovated instead of torn down and rebuild to newer. Hence, the older looking neighborhoods through out New York in general. DC does that, but has a lot of newer buildings even within neighborhoods. Dc also much much smaller than New York (NYC). I can imagine it's very expensive in New York to do a total tear down and more cost effective to to a remodel/gut maybe. I guess. :))
Yes it might be really expensive in NYC to tear down the building. There are lots of residential areas and neighborhoods with nice houses in NYC, it shows you how huge the city is. Hope I visit DC soon.
@@MannyExploresVlog Last time was Oct 2016.. visited cousin in Brooklyn who retired as a NY school teacher/trainer. Would love to visit Dumbo, Meat District, etc., like I see in your videos though. :))
Spanish Harlem used to be larger ;at the time when West Side Story takes place in the 1950s there were jobs in New York :the Garmet District was big and going; but today everything is made overseas:there are no jobs Puerto Ricans have no need to go to live in Spanish Harlem, the Bronx or New York;when they can live in Florida or Texas: closer to Puerto Rico and climates more similar to Puerto Rico's climates .So Spanish Harlem is shrinking and disappearing .Also the old Puerto Ricans of Spanish Harlem are old and they are also moving and retiring to Florida and Texas .Why would they stay in New York : harsh climate and high taxes .So there is no new blood to infuse in the barrios of the N.E. and upper Midwest.
Sad to see that state it’s in now. Not a Puerto Rican in sight, South Americans Mexicans, and Dominicans is all that’s there now. Nothing stays the same forever unfortunately.
East Harlem, or Spanish Harlem, is a Hispanic neighborhood in the New York City borough of Manhattan where Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Dominicans, Mexicans and Colombians live.
You need to go in the summer time. You passed the Church Where the Latin Lords were at one time. Please look it up. You passed it on 111th street and said nothing. Do more homework. You should have mentioned the Marketa on Park Ave and 116th St.
