Kev's flathead straight six turbo - Update #2
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 вер 2024
- Following on from our previous clips, Kev has now rebuilt his 262ci straight six ready for this turbocharged tri-carb induction. The block has been bored, the crank ground and there's a new cam grind based on the Max 1 V8 profile.
It has only been started a few times so far, hence the gentle throttling at this time. The distributor in this clip will be swapped out for a Bosch unit that is currently on another engine when this block is installed in the car, a '28 Model A boat-tail speedster. There's also some experimentation to be done with spark plugs.
It shouldn't be too long before the next clip, which will be following installation in the car along with a test drive video.
Thanks for all your feedback and comments. Very much appreciated.
so old school. man you don't see anything like this today. Draw through carb set up. man it's just like the 60s. I love this.
Makes a lot of sense because flatheads can't have high compression ratios which suits a turbo set up which needs a lower CR. Plus flatheads struggle to breath well but here we have the turbo to assist. I like the way the carbs are lined up over the engine makes it look traditional, but then you inspect and see actually they're plumbed into the turbo. Super cool.
Loved the way he turned the camera at the car at the end and thinking.... yeah thats going in there alright. :D
Kev. You are a genuine hotrodder.
I would like to do this to my 50' Chrysler Windsor 251 Spitfire flathead. Way cool
I don't think it can get any cooler than this👍👍👍👍
The draw through set up is awesome. Cool old school fab too makes for it to be even more awesome.
What a work of art this thing sounds amazing !!! So cool.
You're a genius, Kev.
Wow, a turbo flathead six. That’s definitely something you don’t see every day.
Love the sound of a bad-ass straight 6. Nice work!
This is great footage 🎥🎬, it' takes me back to my high school days, I had a 53 Dodge Coronet, that I souped up with the JC Whitney catalog parts, the dual exhaust manifold made a huge difference in HP, , that powertrain was coupled to a, 3-speed fluid drive and a 2-speed PTO rear-end gear, , the gas mileage was fantastic ♥️🇺🇸♥️ you're a great mechanic dude 👍👍👍‼️
Don't let it idle at low RPMs for too long, or the fuel will puddle in the intake manifold before the turbo. Then when you crack the throttle all that fuel that has puddled will rush into the motor, sometimes making it fall on its face. This happens when the intake ports/port is too big/wide, low velocity condition. How to solve this problem. Close off idle fuel circuits as much as possible, add a adjustable external idle fuel jet just after the turbo coming from the flout bowls of each or just one carb. At some point the fuel line going to the external idle jet must at least six inches higher than the fuel level in the flout bowls with a small adjustable air bleed to prevent it from siphoning all the fuel from the flout bowls when the motor is not running. Also it needs to have a one way check valve in the line so that the boost will not make it to the flout bowls.....
Julio from PUERTO RICO, I'm OLD SCHOOL!!!!!!!!! =)
Yep, and improper valve lash (intake), improper ignition timing or low to no manifold vacuum while under a load at low RPM could ignite the fuel inside the intake manifold and turbo.
My god that sound is amazing
Gotta hand out a fabricator award here on this buddy! Great job, hope it meets all your expectations and then some!
Great footage 🎥🎞️🎞️🎬 👍👍‼️I had a turbocharged flat head 6 in my 1953 Dodge , Triple carbs and dual header's , All from JC Whitney parts company , 🇺🇸🦅🇺🇸 ❤️
Holy crow, that thing sounds awesome. Nice work
Well Kev seems to have that sorted.
Tightest grouping of turbo components ever. 😮
Sounds like art😮♥️🤘
That would be sweet in an old Henry J! nice build!
That is insane, and I love it!
I don't see any followup videos.....you broke it, didn't you?
I'd love to see THAT setup in a Massey-Harris 101 Super!
sweet motor i guess i can turbo my '51 flat six mopar!!!
Not can, MUST
I wonder to. -52 windsor 🤘🏻😃
what a beautiful piece
God bless you for creating such a cool thing.
Any follow ups to this? Cool project! Was it ever dynoed? Even if it's only 20% increase, it should show nicely on torque.
Sounds AWESOME !
OOOH OOOH OOOH!!! that thing sounds so BADAXXX wicked! nice!!
Love it! Would like to do something similar with my car one day...
That is wild! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Dig this build, and car, I'd love to see a motor like this in a little mustang II or a Ford falcon pick up 😀 nice work 🤘
Wow..THAT IS SUPER COOL....👍👍👍
Interesting toy man. It looks powerfull.
Very nice job 😉👌
it sounds like fire so awesome
Thing sounds sick af
Whatever happened with the continuation videos? This is amazing!
I'll take on for my 48 f1 flathead 6
What's the estimated HP ❓❓❓
This is a awesome video i just have a couple questions about the setup.. What size turbo did he use? And what are the three lines coming from the bottom of the carburetors going to the intake side of the turbo?
Super Cool Set up!
TJ Tharp The engine is a Ford flathead six w/254 cu in (originally),
Apparently, Kev has bored oversize (+ .060");
I suspect the bore is now 3.560"; stroke is stock @ 4.4" (probably).
Ford made the 226 cu in (3.3" bore) and the 254 cu in (bore = 3.5").
Damn I would love that in my 36 Dodge Sedan
I want that on my 46 Fargo Power wagon
You still around? What size turbo did you use? What kind of power did you end up with. About to put my rebuilt 226 back in and I'd like to do something like this with efi as well
That's real cool
🖐
i like it very old engine
Sounds great!
So what ever happened to this motor? Those of us with flathead 6's need to know! I own a '40 plymouth and have a '52 265 that could use a boost. Right now she's sporting an Ellis with twin pots...nice but not enough.
Freaking awesome man.
Beautiful bro!
id like to see that in something. Sounds like its makin power
I wonder what came from this. Is the engine ever put in a car and run? What's it doing now?
Makes me wanna turbo my Yblock ford.
I absolutely love this! I am picking up at 92 Rambler in a few weeks. I would love to have my engine built similar to this so I can make my own turbo kit.
sick.in a good way
The engine is apparently a Ford flathead six w/254 cu in (original). Kev has bored oversize (+ .060"); thus, the bore is now 3.560"; stroke is assumed stock @ 4.4". Ford made a 226 cu in (w/3.3" bore; 4.4" stroke) flathead engine and
a,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, 254 cu in (w/3.5" bore; 4.4" stroke) flathead engine.
Hudson Wasp and the pre Hornet stepdown cars used a 262c.i.
Very cool!! Looks like the carb manifold is heated by coolant?
awesome! put it in something and gooooo!
That is AWESOME!!!!!!!
As talented a builder as Kev appears to be, I don't understand the "rev it til it blows" deal..... :-(
ever thought doing this to a
straight 8? maybe dual 4's?
wow nice job, I would be worried about it leaning out, turbocharging the vacuum side. were you able to check it with and EGA ?
So now it’s 10 HP ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥🤣😂🤣😂🤣🤣🤣😂😂🤣🤣😂🤣
It would be a little more than that . But would be interested to know what it put out . My guess would be 200hp ish about 100hp stock give or take depending on the year and what size it is
Hopefully I can do this with a diesel turbo for my 50 dodge
nice man, very cool
I dig it THAT is cool
Awesome! 👍
this motor sounds great. did you do any math to arrive at that exhaust manifold design? I'm getting ready for my homemade setup and would love to know how high tech you got. Is that a T3 on there?
that's a sweet exhaust manifold!
one thing you might want to do in the future is use head studs.
You guys ever get the engine installed in the '28 model A for the test drive? Would love to here the turbo spooling up under load. Awesome build for sure.
Daddy likes !!!
How much power does this beautiful engine make?
What kind of power is there to be made with this kinda setup? I’ve got a ‘48 Dodge B1B that I’d love to give some more ponies to. That factory 106hp just won’t cut it, lol.
Omg!!!! I just picked up a 51 Pontiac and want to do this to the flat 6! Any more info or updates available????
Don't think I've ever seen a turbo set up like this where you draw the fuel through the turbo inlet.
30spooln late response, yet...draw thought turbos are the first turbo setups ever done, the corvair had one.
it's appreciated for being the simplest way to turbo anything, but you have to deal with engine knocking (it so limits maximum pressure, unlike a blow throught turbo, who uses a special carb) and frequent oil changes, due to the turbo bearings eating gas...
its the only way to do it with traditional carbs. otherwise youd blow the fuel right back out the carb.
read my post again. whole. go figures why you bothered posting.
what are you even talking about. you sound like. whiney baby
I'd like to see that in a new car
Nice!
What turbo did you use? I am wanting the same setup on my studebaker flat 6
still waiting for a test drive...
Whatever became of it?
What kind of money are you looking at to do something like this? I have a 1950 pontiac flathead 6 and would love to do something like this to it.
крутой мотор получился
Hmmmm will the engine take the power for very long at higher revs?
Isn’t that a little sketchy with the fuel mixture that close to the hot side of the turbo ? 🤔 sounds sweet though 👍
You need to find a midas ohv conversion cylinder head for that.
That is pretty slick. Interested in doing my 95 F150 300 4.9 F.I. with turbo. Any advice?
I don't care how much or how little horsepower this engine makes, it needs a Rat Rod built around it.
Schweeet 😋
What turbo did you use /Or work best with the 230 ???
Cool engine, how much power is it putting out??
So why are the carbs before the turbo? Shouldn't the cold side run into the carbs? More compact?
Super Cool, I have stage 1 Garret 2.4 Turbo New in box I scored on ebay. Would like know if intake lines are for water lines back to pump ? Looking for dual carb intake to cut up to modify. How are you cooling the Turbo?
Nice Ford flatty. What mods to the crank for higher rpms, compression and cam specs. What trans do you intend to use? I've got a Chrysler 265 that could use a few mods for imrpovement.
Dude, this is great! Any idea of how much hp/torque?
nice!!!
Are you running accelerator pumps on all the carbs?
I have a 1950 226 in my F2. Where can I find hi perf parts for it ??
Love the sound of that thing BTW !
Where can I get this setup for my 52 cranbrook
someone has to educate me. Why doesn't the boost pressure blow out through the carbs??
Sounds great. Is the waste gate operating in this video.
