I still have spectrum internet I might try 5G in the near future
Can you do a review of FreeCast. Thank you.
I remember the days when the channels actually had content that matched their name. MTV had music videos, TLC actually had learning content instead of useless 90 day fiancée, History actually had history shows, Discovery actually had science shows. I want them all to go away and start all over again. I think the only one true to its founding still is Turner Classic Movies.
A lot of those small channels could have their content merge into other existing channels, but the loss of TCM would be huge. That content just isn't available anywhere else.
TCM is one of the only channels that is keeping me on cable. I wish they would make the Watch TCM app available without needing to have a cable subscription.
They can sell that content if they cease to exist.
TCM’s content is available on HBO Max if the channel gets dropped or shut down completely the content wouldn’t be lost. The channels being shut down are ones who content is all ready available via streaming. The content of the channels being drop from Spectrum are available via the Disney+ subscription only the cable channels are being dropped not the content
The off-shoot channels (which are actually just niche collections) were a convenient way for companies like MTV, BET, Nick, etc. to diversify their target audiences by offering the niche programming, but still maintain their core broadcasting services. Let's not forget that a lot of these companies are also on the woke train and many people are being turned off by some of the content being shown on the networks. I do agree with you on the loss of TCM though.
TMC’s content It’s pretty much all available on HBO Max it even has its own hub inside the HBO Max app. The only channels being eliminated are ones with low viewership and the content available on a streaming service or some other channel
I've got an idea. How about we just drop them all. I was born in 1950 and grew up with 3 tv channels until UHF brought 2 more on the scene. We watched the news and weather first thing in the morning and then at 6 at night. During the day there were reruns of movies and a few soap operas. At night there were movie series like dragnet, Perry Mason , Combat and then at midnight the stations would sign off and play the National Anthem. Sundays were special with some major sports and Disney and some big movie at night. And guess what ? We got along fine. I say lets try it again. !
It sounds nightmarish. Could that be why the people who grew up in the 1950's were the ones that created a world of an endless number of channels? They did not enjoy your version of television bliss.
try visiting a library ?
Its of the 50s anymore.
In Saskatoon Saskatchewan we just had 1 channel until 1970.
Perry Mason and Combat? No thanks!! I'll live with choices, even the choice to watch those old shows.
When Xfinity has to stop sponsoring NASCAR you know they will be hurting financially. That always urked me when a corporation is making so much profit they can actually sponsor a major sports event like that. That tells me they are WAY over charging for their product!!!!!
I grew up in the late 70’s & 80’s when cable wasn’t even really offered even in a large city like Chicago except for HBO & and couple of other channels so until 1985 we were stuck with the three networks, PBS & and handful of UHF channels. When we finally got cable in the summer of 85 I was amazed at having I believe it was around 60 channels. However somewhere around the mid 00’s I began to realize that TV was just better when we only had 3 networks, PBS & and handful of UHF channels. Don’t get me wrong there are a lot of good shows on different platforms but you have to wade through so much more trash to find them. I honestly find myself watching old school shows Freevee or Pluto & only watching YTTV for sports & maybe 2 or three network shows which is whim glad I can pause it.
Same here i have a a dozen channels i watch and never the others. I figure i can live with about 12 extras and my local coverage.
Question for Luke: The cost of streaming services keep going up. Do you think there is a hard cut-off where subscribers will say enough is enough and cancel them?
Yeah, ask a cable company.
I think that's already happening as the prices of streaming services keep increasing so your 'personal bundle' is approaching the cost of your old cable TV bill. I cut off all the paid streaming and went to an OTA antenna and just use free streaming to watch an occasional movie. My local public library also has quite a nice DVD collection of movies and old television series I can check out.
Already there. I cancelled my live streaming service and get on demand services usually only when they are on sale. Using more free services. Others are doing that too.
Make sure to watch tomorrows video I will answer your question in that video.
The thing is as long as paid streaming services allow monthly subscriptions that can be easily cancelled and resarted cord cutters cost will only gets close to the cost of cable if you use a live tv service, which I really don’t get why people subscribe at this point and sub to every paid service every single month. Especially once you get rid of the live tv service you still can save tons of money by simply cycling thru one or two paid services and the cost of your internet
When I cancelled my standard TV with Spectrum, my bill went from $140 per month to $85 per month. That saves me $55. If you subtract the network carriage fee, RSN fee and some of the higher priced fees like ESPN, the math tells me that the profit margin skyrocketed when I did this. No wonder the rep didn't try to talk me into staying with the TV package. They didn't let the door hit me on the ass on the way out.
That's why we like streaming with Roku on the Internet.😊
many cable cos have come to the realization that they make a relatively small amount of money on TV because there are so many different companies that take a piece of each dollar coming in that by the time all the bills are paid, there might be a 4% margin there.
@@jjc4577 Spectrum has a $30/mo charge for unbundling the TV services that is included. They understand the word, monopoly. Or they are letting their internet service subsidize their TV.
10:34 lies, lies, lies… they need to remove DRM. Period. Scrap 3.0 and start over.
These idiot cable
Company’s kept raising price and now they are priced out of business.
Let that be a lesson to streaming. Keep raising cost and your next
They have to pay the channels to carry their content and the channels keep demanding more money.
Spectrum keeps begging me to get TV from them.
Not going to happen.
I'll probably be in the wave of cable-to-wireless 5G internet changers in the near future. I went with Spectrum internet as a T-Mobile network engineer I know mentioned the 5G system in my area was in the process of being upgraded and updated to be as fast (or faster) as cabled internet and would be completed by mid-2023. When my low-priced Spectrum deal ends I'll try T-Mobile's 5G. Interesting times we live in with how fast this is all evolving.
Unless you live right next to a T-Mobile tower your speed will not even be close to your cable connection. Plus there are several other issues that you’ll run into but good luck with that
I'll keep my 600 Mbps speed and no data caps.
I left spectrum in August it's the best decision I made.
I'm surprised Paramount still have separate teams for Pluto TV and Paramount Plus; wonder if the Pluto TV founder will still head up that division?
Meanwhile in the places that actually NEEDED more options, or high speed internet in the first place, they are still under ironclad monopolies.
I think you're too optimistic about ATSC 3.0 TV. It's getting tied up in FCC regulatory disputes right now between consumer groups, broadcasters, software development companies, and major media companies. Some want OTA TV kept free for all with an antenna, some want everything encrypted with DRM so its all PPV, and there are software licensing issues (the LG mess). I'm not sure it will ever happen unless the FCC sticks itself into it all and regulates it at some 'middle ground', but if that happens its likely the broadcasters would just broadcast minimal OTA content and have everything else on PPV streaming platforms to maximize revenue. Personally, I expect it to die before anything gets resolved, OTA TV will stay the same as it is now at the ATSC 1.0 level, and the real growth will be in paid streaming platforms.
Spectrum worst customer service ever!!!
What organization saying that ATCS 3 will not put limits on DVRs? Is that the FCC? Your post doesn't mention the Organization you're talking about. Can you clarify this?
Thank-you.
Cable companies just don't see it. With most entertainment services customers pay a premium to not watch ads, but with cable tv customers pay a triple premium just to watch ads!
For what it's worth, Charter Communications, Spectrum's parent company, does disclose SMB and residential customers in the financial statements and always has.
How Spectrum is moving right now, I think they're going to accelerate the process of migrating the legacy cable customers to the new Xumo platform in 3 years from now.
It costs millions per year repairing/refurbishing and warehousing those cable modems.
Unless those Xumo streamers have modems built in. Modems will still be necessary as internet will be necessary for streaming box to work it’s the cable set top boxes that will be eliminated
@@elcaballeronyc This 100%, it does not matter what type of connection you have in your home be it dial-up(yes there are people who still have it sadly), DSL, Cable, Fiber, 5G Wireless, or Satellite you need a gateway/modem to translate the signal. Streaming players as a whole are much simpler, and are more cost effective to produce than cable boxes.
Cable subchannels are going the way of the dodo because no one is watching them anymore. It's not a question of if subchannels go away, but when. On the upside, this could lower the costs of basic cable.
MTV channels play pretty much the same crap all day reruns of whatever famous shows they had back in the day. LOL, so no big loss. I doubt fewer channels means a lower price.
I like the way these companies ASSUME everyone has high speed internet to stream everything. A lot more of us don’t have it and can’t even get it! Rural Indiana and we have very poor cell reception, and/or it’s way overloaded, in some places zero, not to mention internet, let alone high speed! No cable. TV is free over the air local stuff or a dish…..that’s it. This state is fairly well populated, bigger more wide open states are way worse! Big cities are the only places this stuff is viable.
No big cities are not the only kinds of places these services are viable, as I live in rural S. Carolina in a town that has a population of around 2,400 people(we have to drive 30 mins to over an hour to get to a Walmart, or other big stores), and we have had had fast cable internet since 2007 from BreezeLine cable(formally Atlantic Broadband) with speeds of 1 gigabit if you're willing to cough up a kidney each month for it, Frontier DSL(they claim to be running fiber soon), along with T-Mobile, and Verizon 5G Home Internet plans(AT&T to follow at some point in the future) with fast speeds.
In fact I have T-Mobile 5G Home Internet, and I'm seeing speed over 600 Mbps down(rare burst over 800 Mbps) and uploads as high as 150 Mbps with sub 24ms idle pings.
So again, no big cities are not the only place these services work if the companies are willing to put in the work to make money, and they need to be shown there is money to be made, so get out there start a petition, and get all the people in your town to sign it, make copies, send to your town council, then all the major ISP/cell companies that service your surrounding area to again prove there is money to be made, that's exactly what I did back in 06/07 to get Breezeline to finally give us faster that dial-up internet speeds, and it took time but other companies also realized there is money to be made, and they came in to service my area. So don't complain, be proactive!!!
Someone had to start and Spectrum is the test case for eliminating these unnecessary channels. 😎🍿 This will be interesting. Comcast is sitting back watching all of this.👀😏
Cord cutter 2.0 here, Verizon 4G LTE and a couple of Roku Ultra boxes is all I need! $50 a month! No more $250+ Comcast bills for us!
Why can't we have ala carte? Pay for just what we use makes sense. Low numbers of subscriptions could incur a surcharge. Keeping it manageable would help everyone and weed out poor performers.
I would greatly appreciate it if directv and or directv stream would contact the subscribers as far as to what channels they watch before they drop them
They have the data to do the analytics
Dont be surprised if these ISP's/CTP's accelerate their transition plans, especially with coaxial based infrastructure. The bandwidth to move forward is there, it always has been, and so has the technology. The fact that streaming services are disrupting the marketplace is what I am glad to see and be a part of. Since moving to Internet only service with all other services as streaming (i.e. roku, firestick, etc.) I have been saving over $200 a month and my service is leagues ahead of my previous major vendor ISP. What has happened with streaming services though is that products like Roku and Firestick/FireTV have simplified the tech side of the house which was needed prior to these major streaming services. As the current state of the economy continues to wrench hardships on consumers, most of your middle-class that were "meh I might try it out" are being forced to move to streaming services to balance monthly budgets. How do you think this fares with the future of traditional ISP services and costs?
Spectrum _actively_ worked to get me off of TV and voice - when my all-in bill went from $229 --> $350 in the span of less than 2 years and couldn't explain what was on the bill and never tried to negotiate (I actually won't negotiate with terrorists) - I went from having 3 Spectrum services (top tier for everything) to a non-Spectrum customer. I probably spend about $200 a month (again all-in) for more services than I had before (including live TV) and happier overall. I won't say I'll never go back to cable TV but there's less a 1% chance ;-)
I look for data caps to lower the cap level in order to increase their income. Users will suddenly see higher internet bills to offset lower tv package prices....I stay with a low mb rate (40mb) that has no cap instead of higher speeds with caps.
I support Spectrum’s deal with Disney. I’m in favor of paying for only the content you want to watch.
I agree, but will they drop their prices after dropping content?
@@terriw919fyi Probably not but no change on price is a good thing these days.
I finally decided I am over Direct TV since they keep raising their prices. I started with them in 2018, paying $45.00. I still have the same plan, which was a pretty basic one and it will be $100 next month! NOPE! I'm done!
This is why I really hate the tv packages same amount of content as before but over twice as expensive!
Luke, what do we do if no one offers 5G Home Internet at our location?
Question for Luke. With DIRECTV and Spectrum, dropping some channels like they did with the Disney agreement do you think our bill will be lower due to having less channels.
I'm sure that you won't miss the channels you used to have after a while of not having them
You should be a comedian!
I doubt it. They're probably find a way to add more fees to make up for it.
Question for Luke: Why do some services like Pluto TV only have a limited number of episodes on some shows and not the entire series? Thanks!
That's because when it comes to Pluto TV with a lot of their content to get the full series they want you to sign up for Paramount Plus so they make more money, and other times when it's not directly content they own, but have licensed from a license holder they might not always get the right to the full series for one reason or another, and one example is Netflix was showing Miami Vice several years back, but due to some of the music used in the show, they could not show several key episodes that ruined the entire flow of the series, so yeah there are several reasons, and not just one.
I know. Big Blue Bloods fan here but I've seen all their episodes multiple times. Feel like I'm watching the original Star Trek, or Seinfeld ("Not that there's anything wrong with that.").
I'm oversaturated with the same seasons of BB and looking for a different free provider now.
Not going to pay for any of the other options. Cash is very tight.
Many of these smaller channels would just be better off as a streaming service instead. That might actually make Comcast happy because it frees up signal spectrum for Comcast to offer even faster DOCSIS 4.0 bi-symmetric cable modem service.
Recently purchased a new motorhome with two fire tvs. I’ve got to say, I really dislike the interface. Going to buy a second Apple TV for the RV. Not sure how you can recommend. Roku is also good.
If spectrum wants too eliminate something eliminate those useless music channels thar no one uses and replace them with real channels I can watch.
@@joanfrederick9176not to mention those music channels use far less bandwidth than a real tv station.
Direct TV becoming largest tv provider with purchase of Dish with sling.
I get 650 downloads from my T Mobile gateway, and couldn't be happier. Screw Comcast
Some good news about ATSC 3.0. Was there ever an ATSC 2.0?
No
@@bradc6199 Why did they go to 3.0 instead of 2.0?
Where I live I have no other choice as the only provider is Spectrum. Sure, AT&T is here but it is only 20mbp, and I work from home so that is not gonna work. My job requires a hardline cable internet connection so the 5G wireless is also not going to work, and so this is where I think Spectrum is going to retain a lot of their customer base.
The code would not work with my Prime account!
Question for Luke: Do you see smaller Cable TV networks like Niki-Junior becoming free ad supported channels, maybe being added to Pluto, Plex, Tubi or Roku, to keep existing?
Most cable channels especially the ones that continue to produce original content are tied to and owned by a studio with a streaming service and all the original content is available via that streaming service. What seems to be happening is the studios are dropping the cable network and offering the content via streaming and discontinuing the cable network. A few of the studios that have free ad supported services like Paramount may add some of that content there as a streaming channel with the cable network branding but they more likely just absorb and offer via streaming. That’s what happened in the Spectrum/ Disney deal the channels were drop but subscriptions to the streaming services where the content of those channels are available is being added to the cable package
@timespasttelevision the channels may want it but if the cable company and live tv services refuse to pay for them and drop them anyway
QUESTION FOR LUKE: How long until channels like Freeform. Disney Jr, The Disney Channel, BBC America, Nick Jr, and VH1 Classic are shut down do you think? I think Freeform will be shuttered first and that it’s not gonna be around much longer.
They should just migrate some of these smaller networks to fast apps if they really want them to survive
Peacock has the Hallmark Happy And Friends Yule Log on demand . There is a Thanksgiving theme and a Christmas Theme on demand video. Both run 3 hours just like the loop when Hallmark would have it on the Hallmark Channel. If you didnt know Peacock also has all three Hallmark channels live.
Big brothers greed has created the streaming world no one to blame but themselves
I have a roku and tried the firestick. I really can't stand the way it is laid out and would not consider buying one. If it ain't on roku I don't need to watch it.
I don’t even have live tv anymore nothing on cancelled the streaming services as well since prices and everything has gone up I just pay for the movie or season to watch the shows I need for sports I just listen to Xm radio
FYI in my market (NYC) spectrum has yet to provide access to Disney+, they say “it’s coming.”
I think its that way in all markets still. They say later this year.
@@CordCuttersNews I only wonder if it will be the ad laden version or ad free. It’s funny, we just did a bulk building deal… I had been doing only internet & phone and the bulk deal gives me their cable line-up, Peacock Premier, ad-free MAX (plus the old HBO, Showtime & Cinemax), gig Internet and a DVR for just about the same I had been paying.
ATSC 3 has become a joke. DRM is going to ruin it. It already has imo. Last time I checked anything OTA can't be encrypted. This is the FCC's own rules I thought.
Everybody should drop all cable and go back to over the air signals and do some streaming. ( I did and I’m loving it) Their getting too big and too powerful and too rich on the backs of the public.
I really love Pluto TV. I fear it is only a matter of time before they start charging a fee. I hope not!
Question for Luke: will mytv network finally shut down, as most programing is now on ion networks. Could TLC or fox news be removed soon.
I would possibly change to 5G home Internet, but I have Spectrum mobile, and only pay $60 a month for two lines, if I switched Internet providers, it would be so much more expensive for the wireless
Only if DIRECTV suddenly starts working in bad weather!
IFC and channels like it will be gone soon then
Adios!😂
Take two,please ?
Question for Luke do you know when Hdhomerun will get DRM encryption update and do you think Plex will be able to access DRM channels?
I read that Spectrum has launched a streaming service that will air Laker games.
I just tried to get the Fire 4K max stick with your code and I am sorry to report the code is no longer good.
Questions for Luke? What is a Xumo box? Is it a glorified Roku? If it a glorified Roku box, then I would stick with a Roku box or a smart TV. Roku has more app than Amazon Fire stick. I don't need a Roku on my living room TV, because that's a Roku TV. The TV in bedroom in my bedroom is a dumb LCD TV, so my Roku Ultra is on that TV. My Cousin bought a Roku Ultra for his living room and he loves the voice feature.
Its like a Roku but locked into Spectrum or Comcast.
@@CordCuttersNews Companies that intentionally create barriers by making their products proprietary (i.e., in this case a Roku-like player that can only be used on Spectrum, or Comcast) are only fooling themselves that the public wants that. In today's environment, the public wants products that have the widest potential usage.
I don't even know why Peacock refuses to service Linux. There are no apps for Linux, and I doubt there ever will be. If you prefer Linux, you're stuck with an Internet browser which I actually prefer, anyway. You might say something that Linux users could screen capture a video streaming service. No, they can't. I've experimented for the fun of it, and the web browser player always knows when you try to do that and stops playing. There is only one way to capture streaming video to record it, and that's to get a Chinese device that strips the HDMI of the HDCP info for use with old screens that can't use it. I don't have an HDMI capture device, but you're done at that point. Macrovision is harder to strip from videotape. Even with a black box, artifacts are left behind.
I would like to know if cable companies get paid by all the non major channels and if they drop them are they will be paying less
and will they apply that "less" to my cable bill saving me money. I am not speaking of major channels that I have to subscribe too,
all the other hundreds of channels along with all the music channels that I don't watch or listen too. I think the answer is let me
pic a dozen channels I want and pay accordingly. I see no reason why my cable bill for TV should be more than $30-$40 a month.
I like freeform Soectrum cut it out
We have until 2040. Because after then poof💥 TV is gone.
Or at least that's what Mr Data tells us.
If anyone gets over $25 they are gone and I cancel.
My barrier is $15.
If anything like cable [ linear live pay tv] will survive its going to have to condesne down to the way it used to be in the 1980s with about 20 to 30 channels with good content, and that will be streaming not a cable box. Mtv2 Teen Nick, Nick Jr and logo should go first and that content be but on Nickelodeon. Boomerang can be merged with cartoon network and Freefeom wirh Disney or vice versa.
Who in the world watches live tv these days?
The death of cable is coming.
If cable companies move to streaming and not use a simple app for firestick, Ruku, etc. and have to use their box, will they force
you to rent the box like cable tv. I don't like the idea of paying for programming and then having to rent a box for each room I want
to watch it in.
They won't do this, simply because they are not in a position to do this anymore. They can't risk even more people leaving them, and this would do that. Everyone would make a vast jump onto UA-cam TV, Hulu and others. The consumers have the leverage now and cable knows it
@@greyeagle4388 My relatives in Florida have Spectrum cable and have an app on 3 of their Roku TVs saving them cable box rentals.
My cable company COX refuses to offer the app for a Roku/Firestick, this greed will put them under and I have no sympathy for them. They have had their way with the consumer for many years along with the source of the programing. Sooner or later the TV programming part of it has to go streaming
and then a blood bath will happen since we can pick up programming from so many other sources. You would think with the power of a cable company like Comcast, COX, they would be able to purchase programming cheaper than anyone else and wipe out all the competition but they seem to be holding out for the last buck
before they make a change.
Without watching to end or reading comments - Who cares about MTV (at all) especially 2, or Nick Jr. Garbage!
I wonder how much money these cable providers would save if they stopped force-bundling channels? For instance, I'd be happy not to pay for any of the Cable News channels. Could they pass along the savings to the customers if they dropped the News networks?
I pay 6 dollars a month for news in Canada, so, it's nothing really.
If I was to pick one channel I think would be the very first one to be Turner classic movies because there are already are tons of apps that play old classic movies
Yea, but there are no commercial interruptions on TCM. That is a huge plus to me.
@@joelsheebs728 if you do some searching you might find some independent apps that might have no commercials since the type of movies they have on TCM many would be public domain. Personally I'm not into a lot of classic movies but I have found a few independent apps that have no commercials frankly you kind of wonder how they managed to be legal and support themselves but somehow they do. I know XP TV 2 has movies twice a day and it has no commercials it's the least worth checking out see if any of the movies they player ones you would enjoy
Stop acting like streaming is saving us money🤣
I would love to see your cable bill.
Streaming is higher than my cable bill
It's depends on how many streaming services you have. 1 or 2 not really but say 4 or more then it does get expensive.
😃
In the end, wireline services will be fiber and only fiber. Television and telephone services have become applications that just run on top of the same data network and this trend is not going to reverse. Smart providers are going QAM-less, even if they are still (for now) providing a set top box that makes it look otherwise. Comcrap is cheaping out by shoving more and more data over coaxial cable, and will eventually be QAM-less as well, but eventually even without using any 6 Mhz slots for broadcast video, they're still going to run out of capacity. Just ask AT&T, who did exactly that and is now regretting it.
