  • Just a little over a couple months ago, I sold my Sony PXW-Z190. After selling it, I decided it was best to purchase a Sony FS5 as it was a perfect camera that had everything to fit my needs. Since I could still use the Z190's SD cards on my FS5, I didn't end up returning them. The day my FS5 arrived, I placed the SD card into the camera, recorded some test footage and when I had returned to my computer to edit, all the Z190's test footage files popped up on my computer. I had completely forgotten about the files I recorded so quickly edited them into this short video. The video includes a codec comparison, sharpness test and even some quick test footage.

If you choose the quality and have time to set up for the shot so the FS5 is the way to go. Z190 is designed as run and gun camera. I have been using Sony EX1 for a long time up till now. Sony EX1 is the best camera that I ever had in my life (quality at the time, cost, features, tapeless, file size, low light....) it served me quite well. the Z280 and Z190 are cameras that I am looking for to upgrade in the future since they are similar as the EX1. The earlier others models (Sony FDR-AX1 and Sony PXW-100) are not comparable to EX1 in low light and not mention that their iris/aperture changed during zoom in so I passed those earlier models.

Yes! I absolutely agree. The FS5 is a great run-and-gun camera but does require some set-up time. The Z190 is almost plug-and-play. You turn it on, put in the SD card, and start recording. With the FS5, you do have to deal with lenses, accessories and rigs. The Z190 is very good in that department. I do think it is very comparable to the EX1, as the EX1 is a SOLID run-and-gun camera. I do have to say, however, that the EX1 is far better than the Z190 in low light. I think this has to do with the new 3-chip sensor Sony has put into the Z190. Higher pixel density on the Z190's sensor means significantly worse low-light performance. The Z280, on the other hand, is far better than the Z190 in low light. If you check out Doug Jensen's video, he'll explain that there is a 2-3 stop difference in low-light between the Z190 and Z280. That's a pretty big difference! Oh, and although the Z190 can stop up to f1.6, the aperture does ramp during the zoom range. If I'm not mistaken, I think it can go all the way down to around f/4.5 when zoomed in, which would be bad in a low-light scenario.

@@outlawproductions2228 I havent had the Z190 in my hand so I dont really know how low light it can handle but I saw other reivews and I have researched online the Z190 is really good quality even on high gain since it got better codec than EX1 I think. As you said and I agree with you if you compare Z190 and EX1 at the same aperture and speed and of course the Z190 is the loser since it got 3 of 1/3 inches sensor while EX1 got 3 1/2 inches sensor. So I would compare the Z280 with EX1 is a match. I dont expect Z190 get low light as EX1 and I think I would make it up with the newer sensors and new codec of Z190. I dont think the Z190's iris changed during the zoom range.

      Hello Khoa,
As for low light, yes, the Z190 is pretty bad. I did a few indoor shoots with it a while back, and even at around +6db, it was pretty noisy. There are some tweaks you can do to improve the low-light, but it really is down to he camera in the end. You could be looking at the Z280, which is a lot better in low light, but then you are facing a very different camera. Honestly, after playing around with my friend's Z280 a little over a week ago, I can say that the low-light is quite disappointing. I feel that other cameras out there, (such as the FS5 and FS7) pull in a lot more for what they have to offer. Yes, I do understand the Z190 and Z280 are good run-and-gun cameras, but as of now, there are many issues such as barrel distortion (the edges of the images being curved to an unnatural state). Also, there are some issues with the Z190's SD card slots currently that affect it s ability to record. When Sony fixes these issues through firmware, they would be much better cameras. However, we'll just have to wait and see.
