    After watching 100s of test footage videos from people who don’t know how to use the camera in the first place, this really showcases what the cameras quality is truly capable of with great skills, my one question that I’ve been wondering is are the first shots of the birds in 240? My one worry is that shooting in 240 will drop quality yet it is a necessity to run it as I capture high speed action sports!! Thank you for this video

    • @DougJensenVortexMedia
      @DougJensenVortexMedia  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you for the compliments. It has been almost five years since I shot this video and I can't recall exactly what settings were used for any given shot without going back to the original footage and looking at the metadata. However, I do know that almost all of the slow-motion is 120 fps. I know I didn't use the 240 fps mode very often because it only allows you to record for a few seconds and then you have to wait for the camera to process the video. I don't have the patience for that! So there are probably a couple of 240 fps shots, but most is going to be 120 fps because there are no restrictions in that mode.

    Hi Doug, I hope you could give me a hand. I am a very enthusiastic yet amateur teacher who leads a filming club with students from 14 to 17 y/o. They have made a short film. We have used the Z90 and the Bmpcc4. For the Sony, we have shot in XAVC 3848 x 2160 p, which inside DaVinci appears as a .MXF file. For colour correction-grading in DaVinci Resolve, we used just primarily controls, and the result is pretty good. However, we would like to experiment and create a version with Colour Management and DaVinci Wide Gamut. The output will be Rec. 709. I am conscious that the colour management won't detect the Sony clips; therefore, we will need to choose an input colour space accordingly. I am not sure which one we should use and why. I can pick whatever and see if it looks nice, but I'd rather understand it better. We tried some of the PP presets in the Zony Z90, but in low light, they resulted in noise, so we used the camera with PP off. I hope you can point us in the right direction. I haven't done it yet (I am a busy Spanish Teacher), but I will certainly do your masterclass as we plan to buy a second Z90. With all our respect for your amazing work, Miguel.

    • @DougJensenVortexMedia
      @DougJensenVortexMedia  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Miguel, I'd love to be of help but I don't think I have the answers you are looking for. Although I do all my grading in Resolve, I have never used a color managed workflow or those types of settings. So, if you're looking of advice on a "Color Management and DaVinci Wide Gamut", I am not the person to ask. You'd be better off seeking the advice of an experienced colorist. However, with that said, if you didn't already shoot your Z90 footage with S-LOG3 then I think it might be too late to use the workflow you're asking about.

    I look forward to seeing a new sample footage video. I have to say I'd like to see a UHD 60fps setting on this camera, not for slow motion, I just happen to like 60fps...oh well.

      Hi Clayton, yes I do have a finished production camera and I'm working 12-hour days in an attempt to finish the training video by the end of the month, because if I don't wrap it up before I head to the Olympics then I won't be able to get back to it until March. I doubt that I will be putting together another sample footage video, but you never know. Also, the camera is not capable of shooting UHD faster than 30 fps.

  • @MichaelWTurner
    @MichaelWTurner Рік тому +1

    You did a great job showing what this camera can do, but what is most interesting to me is how this compares to the much more expensive z280. I've been trained to think bigger sensor, means better image quality, but your footage on the z280 is much better when it comes to dynamic range. Must be the lens or the 3 chip sensor as opposed to 1 larger chip

    • @DougJensenVortexMedia
      @DougJensenVortexMedia  Рік тому +1

      Yeah, the difference between 1" and 1/2" isn't very big. In fact, those aren't even the actual physical dimensions of the two "types" of sensors. The Z280 excels due to better electronics, better sensor, better processing, and an f/1.9 lens. The Z90 only has an f/4 lens when its zoomed in, so that is one reason shallow depth--of-field isn't really possible.

    • @theNWdigital
      @theNWdigital Рік тому

      Biggest pro for the Z280 is for me the 2160p60 capability. Such a pity that the compact ones don't shoot in 60p 4K.

    Hi thanks for the footage. like one other reply I am considering this Camera or the one down compared to the Canon 400/405. the latter cameras are out now . I would appreciate your opinion on them compared to the Sony's if you get a hand on them. As far as I know, there is no c log equivalent on the Canons. The one thing that as of now makes me lean towards the Canon , is their customer service, which is good. I have heard not such great things concerning Sony's. Thanks again!

    • @DougJensenVortexMedia
      @DougJensenVortexMedia  7 років тому +3

      Unfortunately I don't expect to be getting my hands on a Canon 400/405 so it won't be possible for me to compare them to the Sony cameras. As far as I know Sony's customer service is just as good as any other company, but I don't know from personal experience because I have never needed to get any of my Sony camera's serviced. The best customer service is not ever needing customer service at all! :-)

    Thanks for the video, Doug I was wondering is this camera good for wedding videography? In one of your videos you said that the NX80 is great for weddings but i think that camera is discontinued and i really like this z90.

    • @DougJensenVortexMedia
      @DougJensenVortexMedia  2 роки тому +2

      The NX80 and Z90 are virtually identical cameras, so if one is good for weddings, then so is the other. However, it depends on what style of wedding video you want to shoot. If you like the look of shallow depth-of-field, then these cameas would not be a good choice. But if you want to move quickly, efficiently, avoid changing lenses all the time, and not miss any shots, then these cameras are a great choice.

I primarily used the NX80 outside with the SLOG3 picture profile, 1080 HD, with either 24 fps or 120 slow motion. The footage looked fine and mixed well with the Nikon. I was able to use the Nikon to get shallow depth of field and shoot in low-light.

    I've been eyeing the Z150, and your training course, for a while and came across the Z90 today. It looks like for a little more the Z150 offers a lot more. Can you tell me who would look at the Z90 as opposed to the Z150? Are you still excited about your Z150?

    • @DougJensenVortexMedia
      @DougJensenVortexMedia  7 років тому +1

      Both cameras are quite similar and the differences between them are mostly the physical differences that you can see just my looking at them. The Z150 has a real aperture ring on the lens, so that is nice. But the Z90 is a smaller camera for times when you don't want to attract attention. If you take off the top handle it looks like a tiny consumer camcorder. I honestly couldn't say which one I would prefer to shoot with.

    Anyone tried this for filming motorsports? I film rally and i need a very fast auto focus, the PXW-Z190 is just too slow with the dust trail behind rally cars especially. Is the zoom smooth all the way, Canon XA50 can be a bit difficult to modulate. I can never find any reviews testing this.

So you understand my pain, my goal is to use a converter program and see if I can find one that'll allow me to convert to .mp4 witout tkaing too much time. So far Ive come to realize that no editing program on the phone supports HIGH 4:2:2.
    I can use H.264 HIGH but for some reason when 4:2:2 shows up, it can't so I'm trying to see if maybe 4:2:0 is a better option, maybe I have a link to 4k footage? or AVCH 4:2:0 in 1080p ?

      @@DougJensenVortexMedia you know what? I confused Cliff Toten's long post for yours lol. And with regards to sample footage. I think to call it "original footage' would make it a bigger task than I actually wanted.

      I can't find any apps that'll open and edit a file with 422.
      But if my suspicious are truen it can handle 420. I just need sample footage to confirm.
      I got an app that converts video. And it'll change the extension from mxf to. Mp4 and the codec has various profiles for h.264.
      But in that program I can select to not have it reencode but it'll somehow change the file extension to be compatible with.
      I just want to verify if I get ingested I think I can use a proxy file cause I'd 420 and then I'll be able to work on my phone

I didn't like any of those, for various reasons. None of the footage in this video was shot with S-LOG or HLG.

      I am currently working on a 5-hour training video that covers nearly every aspect of operating the Z90, NX80, and AX700 camera -- including a couple of picture profile suggestions and an explanation of the reasons for the settings I have chosen. I will post a link here when the video is completed in about three weeks. Thanks for asking.

    • @DougJensenVortexMedia

      Sorry, I don't recommend using HLG. And if you do you use HLG anyway, the way it was intended, no LUT should be required.

      @@DougJensenVortexMedia I have a HLG TV and the picture is very plane.
      And s-log is very nosy and unusable.
      A part from that I saw many youtube celebrities that shoot in HLG and the footage grades very nice. But I couldn't find anything about luts that can be applied on camcoder footage.

      @@procamara359 If you UA-cam celebrtities are having success applying LUTs to HLG then you are welcome to follow their advice. I'm just telling you that Sony designed HLG not to be graded. That is a fact, and I agree with Sony, so I cannot suggest a LUT. I don't care what the UA-cam celebrities say. :-)
      Personally, I don't use HLG or S-LOG on the Z90 because I believe there are other paint menu settings onboard the camera that provide better results -- with just a little bit of light grading in post. Doug, thanks for the early look! I know this is a pre-production unit, but what did you think of the autofocus performance? (as that is a major selling point for this one) Also, was this shot in FHD or UHD? The footage doesn't look very sharp. And I am glad to see you will be offering a class on it.

    • @DougJensenVortexMedia
      @DougJensenVortexMedia  7 років тому +3

      Hi Mauricio, I think the AF works great. This might be the first camera that I'd ever be tempted to use AF in some situations. The video was shot with a mix of HD and UHD. I disagree that it doesn't look sharp, if anything it is still too sharp even though I have dialed down the detail in the camera.

    • @MauricioVives
      @MauricioVives 7 років тому

      Thanks for the reply. I do a rather non-scientific test for sharpness: screen cap a frame, downsize to 720 then upscale to 1080 and compare to the original image. I did that for a few shots in your sample and saw very little difference, though it may be UA-cam compression making it softer.
