It does, I met one a few years back, he got a few phone numbers and he had to point his rifle at a few people but he said it was a okay job but he’s glad he don’t do it anymore
grace amarasinghe I wonder how long they have to stand guard like that before they are relieved? It must be almost unbearable on a hot summers day with those heavy uniforms and bearskin helmets.
That must take a lot of discipline, and no shrub could do this. I think there are a lot of people mocking these soldiers/guards who would not want to go against them in any type of conflict.
You`re so right....and the very reason these disrespectful goons feel safe enough to mock is because they also actually realise a guardsman`s discipline is such that he won`t punch you straight in the face for being a twat....
They are specially trained to not overreact or speak to people, they are trained to march and pay attention to the crowd of people, plus they know the drills like their name, but why are their guns covered up?
And yes, I guess there is an expect of instilling fear to it. The bearskin added height to a soldier, height being an extremely desirable attribute in European armies at the time. It was also a mark of the elite, due to the costs of acquiring & making the bearskins, and was usually worn only by an army's Guards & Grenadiers. To put differently, it was the culmination of an evolution of headgear that basically saw European armies trying to one-up each other with increasingly more ornate hats.
thewyj They are not there to entertain you they are there to protect our Queen and the Crown Jewels.. What are you watching for then.. So disrespectful as these are soldiers that have been fighting in wars and are trained to a very high standard..
Back when it was worn on the battlefield around the 19th century, as a soldier would a kevlar helmet today, it was very much a functional piece of headgear. It broke the silhouette of the soldier wearing it. Making it tough for enemy lancers, who were trained to aim for the head, to hit their mark & would strike the bearskin instead. The curb chain you see resting on the soldier's chin offered some form of protection to the face from sword & sabre slashes as well.
"used to have an active roll" you are aware that their rifles are loaded? bayonets fixed. and they are fully authorised to use military force in any sort of terrorist / attack situation? not forgetting these men have been in active duty in Afghanistan because they are soldiers?
Well i have saw a number of videos here in youtube someone actually coming up to the guards passing the fence but the guards did nothing, they just yelled 🤣
i remember doing this allot as cold stream guards and for the comment about weapons we are armed we have a job to do there and why would we need optics for that amount of range? and we are there for the protection of royals and the palace if you step over the line and ignore warnings you will be treated like a threat to the ones who think were there for show :_)
i applaud you for keeping those stone solid faces and poses near 24/7. im sure its a great honor to be a member of the Elite Royal Guard. My hat off to you. (:
Joseph ODonnell simply because if you cross the line you are commiting a crime which makes it a police case. If however you'd be armed and threatning and trying to make a run through, the guards will shoot to kill.
The Guards are not police and so cant arrest you, the police are equally there for security just like the guards most are armed but they are more practical as they have jurisdiction both in and out the palace. if you cosue a problem the police will deal with you, each guard has a button they can press for police assistance. if you look at old video there were no police and the guards were a lot more active in watching individual threats, now the guards are more ceremonial but if a threat is posed they are armed and trained to deal with it.
@B1GMON3YJR These are the same full-time soldiers who form the backbone of British forces on operations in Afghanistan and elsewhere. The Grenadier Guards, seen here, had just returned from Afghanistan just a few months prior to when this video was filmed. They do this until they swap roles with another regiment so the men can go back to what some view as 'real' soldiering, i.e. preparing for operations and the operational deployment itself.
I can't imagine having to work standing straight and stamping my leg all day. I assume these guards are taught techniques to ensure they stay healthy and don't damage their knee joints.
Tweeaak Tweek Well, what they do is balance both marching around then standing straight, as if you march for too long you get tired and if you stand for too long while at attention, you will faint.
The Gazing Knight Especially when performing a honourable ceremony of Guard Shift Replacement in front of a staring crowd with high discipline needed...And wearing a hat like that...I'd be sweating too.

The design of the rifle is called a "bullpup". There are actually a few models with this design. The design allows for a shorter overall length while still using a full length barrel which gives the bullet more velocity. France has a bullpup called the FAMAS and a company called steyr makes one too called the AUG.. Those plus the british rifle are the only ones that I can think of off the top of my head.
The Foot Guards do not wear single chevrons. All Lance Corporals wear two chevrons while Corporals are automatically appointed Lance Sergeants and wear three chevrons. I am a Malaysian. it was 1 of the countries which was under the British Empire and i have to say i am actually proud of that. idk why but i prefer UK over US
Marc 9663 I think it’s probably a bit of both. The uniform is quite ceremonial, it’s obviously not what they wear when they go into battle, but the rifles are obviously very modern and these days, with the ever-present danger of terrorist attacks, probably very necessary.
feel bad for these guys, the high school band at my school is modeled after the coldstream guards and I am a colour sergeant in the colour guard and I 've only ever had to do this for 12 mins (of course we only get one hour a night for 2 nights at the annually concert).
Agreed. I remember some years ago, I think it was around 2007 when you no longer saw the 2 radiomen marching at the back of every procession. Maybe had to do with the IRA being disbanded or I think more so of the police having a better hold on the whole security situation.
With my respects to the Guards who are there to protect the Queen and the Realm. It's a ceremonial duty with all its implications which the tourist do not seem to be able to even begin to understand. long live the Grenadier Guard regiment.
Actually, I'm from the US, and I am smart enough to understand that if Churchill's Few didn't defend Britain, the Germans would have gotten full control over the English Channel and thus could move west towards America. There are many possibilities as to what would happen if the Battle of Britain was lost by the allies, but the likeliest one would be an invasion of America. So really, they saved us.
