Burlington Northern Locomotives

- The Burlington Northern was a freight railroad created on March 2nd, 1970 with the merger of the Great Northern, Northern Pacific, Chicago, Burlington and Quincy, and Spokane Portland and Seattle Railroads. For the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Burlington Northern, I thought it would be appropriate to go back and look at some BN locomotives I’ve captured in more recent years on BNSF freight trains. We will see locomotives painted in both the classic Cascade Green and Black scheme as well as the more recent BN “Executive” or “Grinstein” scheme of the 1990s. Additionally, we’ll see a beautifully restored Burlington Northern SD9, number 6234, running on the Minnesota Transportation Museum’s Osceola and St. Croix Railway.

Burlington Northern Is one of my favorite falling flag railroads because it’s one of the reasons why I love The color Green
Tommy Pickles Fan 1992.... since When is the BN(SF) a "falling flag railroad"??.... did I miss something? lol The BN bought out the Santa Fe and merged it into the BN system, further expanding it's territory.... it's anything But, a "fallen flag railroad"..... despite the fact that they are all having down-turns in freight movement since the last quarter of 2019, and it IS only going to get worse as time goes on here.... as the the NWO agenda becomes more & more implemented and depopulation becomes more aggressive.
When it was created in 1970, many railfans considered it a killer of many good railroads. Its nice to know that it created it's own history and that it proved to be one of the best railroads of it's time.
Thanks, Alan! I've always liked the BN.
@@Romans--bo7br BN didn't "buy" the ATSF, they merged, so both the BN and ARSF are fallen flage railroads
@@Highclearmedia Bn And Atsf Created The Bnsf
Burlington northern was one of my favorite freight train operators when I was little. I watched lots of train related stuff on DVD and Burlington northern was very common on those DVD’s. It’s cool Burlington northern still has some operating locos. Even older gen BNSF locos and Santa Fe trains
I grew up in the 80s and 90s close to the Stampede pass line through Covington, so it was cool to see the occasional (closer to rare) green BN loco. They started using that route a lot more once they merged with ATSF and painted the trains.
BN's green locos are my favorite railroad locomotives. I live on a BNSF (former BN) main line and its always a treat to see either BN or ATSF loco schemes on the rails
I’ve Only Seen Them Once. I May Have Seen It More But One Time I Had My Camera And It Had A BN Locomotive In The Lead. 2 Blue And Yellow SF Locos Trailing. And A BNSF SD40. And That’s The Only Time I Remember Seeing BN Or SF But I Love The Design Of Them. My Top Favorite Loco Designs:
1: Fort Worth And Western
2: Burlington Northern
3: Santa Fe Silver And Red GEVOs
4: Santa Fe Blue And Yellow SD40s
Super video!
Thanks, Boris!
Awesome vid!
Thanks, Noah!
Thats my favorite company! And I love the Burlington northern 6234 it’s my fav loco of all
Now I understand what BNSF stands for!
Lol!
Burlington Northern Santa Fe!
Sweet catches. ❤️🌸
Thank you!
Yes plz more be4. BIG BLUE was my favorite RR the BN was my favorite RR now since that merger in 95 that i called. BNSF can't come close to when BN was BN tks bud wonderfully DONE
Very nice. Great to see some “green machines” still working out there. Thanks for a little history and a wonderful video. 🚂
Awesome video!!!!
Happy 50th birthday Burlington Northern
My parents used to tell me a lot about this Railroad. Thank god there's still some Engines with the BN paint scheme, Good video man keep it up
Me to my parents told me too
Mine didn't pay attention to trains but they did say that they saw "the Burlington Northern" when I talk about what trains they saw back in the day haha
Thank you!
@@CoasterFan2105 a question, are there still any SD60MACs left?
@@chafanonash3418 There is quite a few of SD60Ms left, but the 3 SD60MACs that existed are retired, I think
Finally I've been waiting for this thank you
Yes
You're very welcome! Glad I was finally able to get this together!
Yes these trains are also passenger trains they are amazing.
But what air horn does the train have. see that what listen that sound.
Some have Leslie RS3K,
Others might have either a K3LA or a K3HA.
Burlington Northern's paint, horns, and locomotives are just amazing.
Great video Mike
Thank you!
Ayyyyy Burlington Northern Productions
I don’t know but there’s just something to love about these old railroads and the locomotives
They're pretty neat to see!
Oh what is that type of airhorn the train is using the sound is nice
@@CoasterFan2105 yes they are neat the old trains and railroads

Awesome
BNSF
3:54 The most literal interpretation of Burlington Northern Santa Fe 😂
Thank you for the history on the BNSF. Almost had a conducting/engineer position back in the day when you had to “know” somebody. I missed my calling.
Thanks, Ken! I'm going to be doing some sort of a video on BNSF for their 25th anniversary coming up in September and I will probably have a little bit more history in there. Thanks for the comment.
Great job. I was at the Texas State Railroad while this video came.
Awesome Video Mike
The executive locos look cool
Seeing these old engines still at work is awesome. Still wish the BN was a thing today, seeing those green and black locomotives go by. Keep up the great work!
You uploaded this on my Birthday
Happy birthday!
Happy birthday! :)
Happy Birthday!
Awesome! Happy (belated) birthday!
3:52 the man who paired those two units together knew what he was doing
Yes I love bn
I do too!
Incredible Video:) I love and miss the BN locomotives they are so cool to see.
Thank you! I'm glad that I'm still able to see some BN locomotives now and then!
I love the wayside horns!
I hate em!
I don’t like them
They are...different haha! Maybe worth an episode of Train Talk one of these days.
Yes! You should make a train talk for them!
BN, H1, and a B-Unit all in one consist.
And a B40-8! Hard to believe that was just last month!
Around the time this video was created I did see 1419 and ex BN SD60M with 1459 featured in this video
Finally
Thank you for the awesome video, as always Mike.
So cool to see that, I grew up in the Havelock area of Lincoln, NE and saw so many of these trains and logos for many years. Lots of old memories came back seeing those logos.
Great compilation Mike - thank you :)
Excellent Video
🍀🍀🇮🇳🍀🍀
Thanks!
I stumbled across this purely by accident, the second loco clip with what I’m guessing is a emd 60 at the head of the train is my fav paint scheme
I saw a executive mac and you could still see the faded out BN Logos and there was also a green BN locomotive that had the big white BN logo on the nose.
Just not the same without the interlocking BN logo. All hail the great Burlington Northern! Down with the BNSF!
Love the RS3K intro!
Someone is getting old.
My memories of BN were seeing F7s and F9s in Duluth and Northtown.
Even got a few with Frisco power mixed in.
Back when, it was common for folks to travel to Chicago and shoot all those E8-9s. We even traveled to southern Ill. to shoot the bicentennial caboose. Herrin,Ill.
I love. Trains
BN's gotta be my favorite paint scheme, it reminds me such of my childhood when pre-merger engines were far more common.
Nice video, Mike!
Thank you!
Cool :D
Yay I love BN! The BN is far superior to all other fallen flags!
Nice Video Mike!
Thanks, Rhett!
Thanks for this awesome video! My dad lived in Red Oak, Iowa during the last years of the BN and saw many of the engines you fixed. The BN is my favorite railroad as well and I am currently making a Burlington Northern layout in my basement. Keep pumping out those videos!
Also, a few years after you filmed the 6234, the Leslie RS3K(My favorite train horn ever) was changed out to a P3 or M3. It's sad, as none of the MTM's active ex-BN engines use an RS3K now.
A great video , would like to see more of the history of BNSF !
Dang their really keeping 6234 looking nice. It was built in 1959 and for a 62-year-old locomotive it looks damn nice
Cascade green with an RS3K horn, that's gotta be the ol' BN! Great video, Mike.
Great video as always Mike! Keep up the good work.
Thank you, I will!
Those rs3k’s are just so classic of a dvd I have from bnsf’s Stevens pass in the 1990’s with lots of still bn power playing those rails even a few ATSF warbonets and yellow Bonnets and ns and leasers make it in there but it’s all mostly bn, long love the bnsf, it’s been 50 years of bn and ATSF but 25 years of bnsf, god bless the Santa Fe for keeping these magnificent locos alive
Great video
Nice mix train
Nice video :)
Thanks, Felix!
The green Burlington Northern locomotive paint Scheme is probably my favorite
Nice video about my former employer ( 1978 - 1984 ). A side note here, BNSF was not a merger. Burlington Northern, Inc. purchased ATSF outright. The then new full spell Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railroad then traded on NYSE under BN stock symbol (BNI) and BN Inc was the surviving corporate entity. Shares traded under BNI until Berkshire Hathaway acquired all BNI shares outright or exchanged them for BRKB shares (I swapped mine for BRKB's). While working in BN Marketing on network strategy issues in early 80's, we simulated acquiring MILW, CNW, CR and just about any combination of railroads using rail network design software from ALK. The best combination was BN + ATSF which we thought, back in 1982, would make a great railroad where the partners complimented the commercial strengths of each other and compensated for the weaknesses of each partner. It was a great place to work, good people to work with and had many good times.
Sick Videos
South Jersey Rail Productions you will always find my comment here lol

Thank you!
The Burlington Northern units paint definitely aged better than the Santa Fe units, the warbonnets look pink now
I liked this video and would like to see more videos like this please
Happy Early 4th of July, Mr. Mike Armstrong!!!!!! :-D
I have been looking forward this video
BN Is The Best Color On BNSF Railway
Executive MACs are hard to find, as they only pull coals typically.
Yes, they are pretty hard to find. And a lot of them are in storage now, too.
Mac's are very rare, I agree. I believe I only saw one ever in my life, and I dont remember which rail company it was
I just love the green and the RS3Ks
Another round of awesome clips Mike! Cascade green has always been one of my favorite paint schemes. Even though it's incredibly simple, it's just so appealing to the eye. I just wish there were still BN engines around San Diego :/
This is awesome I'm s Burlington Northern my favorite color is green when I was a kid I got to write on the Amtrak in the 90s up to Washington State from Salt Lake City Utah while I was up in the Northwest I remember seeing Burlington Northern engines they're one of my favorite fall on the flags I always love their Burlington Northern logo thanks for doing a video on the Burlington Northern peace out have a great day coaster fan 2105
I have Love NB long time
Cool video mate
Honestly surprised there wasn’t an SD40-2 in there
DANM! those RS3K's on some of the locos
I love Burlington northern!
Some BN C30-7's are still in their green/black livery here in Brazil in 2020, knowing that locomotives are only repainted when they're put in to the shops for big overhauls, that speaks volumes about their reliability.
I love the Burlington Northern.
Bn is my fav especially their sd70mac with EMD 710g3b which makes jet engine sound
I grew up with the Santa Fe in California but I love seeing Burlington northern together as well. Glad to see BNSF as a company opposed to Union Pacific
Wow
Look closely at 5:51 thats a southern pacific set of wells
The Executive Scheme was just for the MACs.
Actually, Burlington Northern's Executive paint scheme was originally from Burlington Northern 1, Burlington Northern 2, and Burlington Northern 3, which are their executive train streamliners. That's why it's called the executive paint scheme.
I found a BN caboose in branchline once :P
Other than that I haven't seen any Cascade Green locos
just an Executive
So the cascade BNs where fitted with Nathan airchime K3HA/LAs?
I wish both BN and ATSF were separate much longer so I can experience them together to this day
Hey Mike, I noticed that i've never seen a BN dash 8 or dash 9 locomotive painted in the green and black paint scheme. Did they not purchase many or am I just not looking in the right places?
BN locomotives aren't my favorite fallen flags, my personal favorites are the Santa Fe, and CNWs dash 9s but they are still a treat to see out on the road.
Only a single CNW patch exists anymore.
Yeah, Santa Fe’s paint scheme is better and I like them more
Well, if I get enough Santa Fe, I may try to do a Santa Fe video at some point.
Nice catches! I got all the train video on my channel
I just found out that in Kentucky at the Kentucky railways museum there is a EMD Locomotive on one end of a excursion Train and a Santa Fe Engine on the other end
Burlington Northern + Santa fe = I’ll let you do the rest :D
It’s Santa fe
I liked the fact they painted the locomotive numbers big and bold on the side...the other railroads just had them under the cab window and the front and back "marker lights" sooo blah 😒
Esse trem é meu outro favorito
I wonder how many SD60MS are still in the Burlington Northern Green Livery and SD70MACS in the Executive livery ?
Hi there Mike
As an addendum to my last message. The Reason I ask is because I have an N Gauge Burlington North Loco No. 3101, which is made by Bachmann. It has all the usual green areas and the BN logo, but the roof is painted Silver. Is this prototypical, or have they just used this colour because "It Looks Nice"? If it's not proto, I will repaint the roof so that it is the usual Black. I've tried asking all around the Net and no-one seems to know.
Hope you can shed some light on this mystery.
Thanks if you can,
Alan Morgan, Swansea UK
SD9 looks like new
8:22 Crazy Lashup
Question: Do They Ever Paint Newer Locomotives In The BN Or SF Paint Job With BNSF Written On It? Or Are The Only Ones With Those Paint Jobs Just Old Locos That Lasted Through The Merger And They Wrote BNSF On It? I Need To Know Because I’ve Only Seen Both Once. There Was A BN SD40 Leading It. 2 Blue And Yellow Santa Fe SD40s Trailing. Then A BNSF SD40 All Leading It. And I Love The Burlington Northern And Santa Fe Paint Jobs
Gotta love what's basically my home railway, BNSF. I always smile when I see a cascade green BN go by as they're not SUPER frequently seen where I live in Colorado. But of course the Executive units are appreciated as well. ☺
I never knew BNSF was BN and SF I wish they would come back to life
Great video and catches. Where is the location at the 2:12 mark into the video? Thanks.
Thank you! That is the old Chehalis, WA depot. It currently hosts a railfan web cam that is on a 24/7 stream on UA-cam.
@@CoasterFan2105.... Sorry for the delay. Thank you for replying, I appreciate it. I will have to watch that 24/7 stream... I watch several others, so will have to add that one to my list, for sure.
