Thank you so much for this how to video! As a beginner at rug hooking and on a budget, buying ready to hook wool at specialty shops and online can be prohibitively expensive. I did make a special thrift store trip to find wool to begin a stash. I got lucky! 10 wonderful 100% new wool suits(jackets and pants) in houndstooth,browns,greys,navy and even red plaid. A long pendleton wool skirt in plus size and a couple vests, all for less than $15 total!! Although taking the suit jackets apart will be a pain, I'm quite pleased.
A few years ago my husband and i would go to goodwill and another thrift store on weekends when stuff was half off. I found so much good wool. Alot of it was pendleton. I washed it and prepared it and now i have enough to last forever probably. If you dont mind hunting and putting in a little bit of work then i say go for it. Its kinda like treasure hunting. 😊 Great video. Subscribed!
Hi Amy, Years ago, I used to haunt my local Goodwill. They sold wool skirts for $1.25 each. I bought so many, took them apart and felted them. I did quite a few jackets, too, when I found a great color I liked. I haven’t used much of that wool but hope to do so in the near future. I have several patterns and designs for making wool appliqué pieces as well as some hooked rugs. Watching you brought back memories of the hunt and the long hours of deconstructing! I’m hoping to find some reasonably priced shelving so I can get my wool out of the storage bags and organized by color. Take care, Sally in Northern California 😁
About 10 years ago, I could find all kinds of wool stuff at Goodwill, but not anymore. I did find an Old Navy wool jacket last week on a sale rack for 50 cents at a thrift store! I was looking for green wool, and it's green!
My favorite finds are pleated skirts. I do think this is a great way to build a stash, and I have been taught by my dye teacher…. There is no such thing as an ugly wool. I do like to use a seam ripper myself, since that way I can save as much as possible, but I think there are many jacket bits that are not worth the time. One trick I have learned to remove interfacing is to use boiling water - usually from my electric kettle. Thanks for the video!
