  • Almost exactly one year ago, we broke ground on the newest addition to the public safety family: Fire/EMS Station #50/36, located in the Del Valle/Moore’s Crossing neighborhoods in southeast Austin. At noon today, the station came on line, ready to respond to the citizens in that area! This state-of-the art project was designed by @PGALdesign, built by @JEDunnConstruction, managed by @atxpubblicworks, and is the first of the "five new stations in six years" resolution the City Council approved in May 2018. Built on more than 12,000 acres near the @COTA track, a total of thirty (30) Firefighters and nine (9) EMS personnel are assigned there, along with two fire apparatus and one ambulance. The station features a 6,000 sq. ft. building to house demand ambulances, special event trailers, and specific EMS related support vehicles, as well as a fueling station. It was also designed to achieve a three-star rating in Austin Energy’s Five Star energy efficiency system.
Mayor Pro Tem Delia Garza stopped by this morning with her daughter to see the new station, which serves District 2’s constituents. This project was near and dear to her heart, and we are grateful for her perseverance and steadfast leadership in seeing this project to fruition. We couldn’t have done it without her!
Special thanks to Mayor Steve Adler, City Manager Spencer Cronk, and the entire City Council for their support of these new stations to help reduce response times in rapidly growing areas of the city.
Due to COVID-19, no grand opening ceremony was held; we hope to do that at some point in the future. In the meantime, if you’d like to “see” the station for yourself, check out this video tour with AFD Division Chief Tony Haden and ATCEMS Division Chief Wes Hopkins, who both oversaw the project for their respective agencies.
