Ariel always had the BEST dolls! I had the very first one with the little blue dress and I still love her! I do remember how her hair was the wrong color. It's super interesting to know the full story!!
I miss when Disney dolls weren't afraid to take artistic liberties when it came to their outfits. Instead of only sticking to their in universe canon garments, they only get creative if it's something collectible. Whereas we were able to get creative interesting clothing in a playline set back in the 90s. Kids literally did not care, we were just like "yay, more clothes!!" I really did LOVE the Mattel face sculpts they would use for the Disney princesses in the 90s
Let's be honest guys XD 90s Tyco Ariel, 90s to Early 2000s Mattel Ariel, and 2011~2016 Disney Store were definitely the Solid Golden Age of History of Ariel dolls! Super Accurate to the movie and lovely design!
I’ve heard that Ariel has read hair because 1.- splash had just come out and the mermaid there was blonde 2.- they didn’t want another blonde princess after Cinderella and aurora 3.- red would pop better with the blues of the sea 4.- it reflected Ariel’s personality
I had an Ariel doll as a child. Her face looked exactly like it does in the movie. She had the bright red hair. She had a plastic purple shell bra and a blueish green fabric tail that you could remove. She had legs but eventually they both broke off at the hip joints.
Ariel has never been my favorite princess doll, but Halle’s Ariel is so pretty. I love the warm tropical vibe I get from her doll. I usually think the live action doll are so awkward, but her dolls are just so cute. Best Disney live action doll!
I agree that they are absolutely stunning! Though I do think I may love the Cinderella ones a tiny bit more, I mean just look at that gorgeous evil step mother! We stan an evil queen.
I will say even though Mattel’s version of Cinderella was absolutely stunning she just done wrong by some other companies, same could be said about the step mother, though not as much. But that fairy godmother, the companies made sure she was absolutely stunning rocking that hair and dress all around!
I had a lot of Ariel dolls when I was younger. I remember going to the Disney store! The 2001 Ariel princess sparkle is my favorite. I rebought her as an adult and love her along with the holiday Ariel from 2000
I remember when Tyco redesigned Ariel in 1991 she was so popular she would sell out everywhere. Disneyland tried to bank on her success and made their own Tyco sized Ariel only sold in park.
The only Little Mermaid doll I owned as a child was the “Swimming Ariel” doll. I was obsessed with the commercial. My sweet mom took note and gifted her to me for my 4th birthday. I still remember the first time I entered the tub with my new fancy swimming doll only for her to flop around like a dying fish and crash into the side of the tub repeatedly. 😂 I still loved her, but she definitely worked best in a pool like the commercial. To be fair, I don’t think she was advertised as or considered a bath toy. She needed some assisted thrust through deep and wide water in order to swim gracefully. I did eventually take her to a public pool and she was so beautiful in the water! Watching that magical and colorful commercial brings back all those memories. I didn’t have the pretty fake coral to accompany her, but my imagination made up for that. 🥰 I wish I still had her.
@beauty inside a box.....you know what the Eric doll, at 6:08 reminds me of? He has the constant face he had in the movie where he was hypnotized by Ariel's voice from Ursula. I haven't watched the actual movie in years but that face stuck with me. Lol. I think if we looked for that scene, it would be spot on. Also, I'm not a huge barbie fan but as any little girl, I had my fair share. Now my youngest is all about them and I love learning about the history. The last video of yours I watched was about the pregnant friend of barbie. I have SO MUCH to say! Lol. 7 year old desperately wanted a pregnant barbie and for Christmas, I found a different brand of doll that had the removable tummy and baby....she loved it. It was actually fairly well made as well so I was impressed.
I still have two Simba Ariel dolls - a hair play with King Triton's crown, and the singing one that transformed from mermaid to the green dress. Both no longer have their fabric tails and are just nude in storage (besides one shell bra lolol). The only other Disney Princess doll I had, and was interested in having, was a Mattel Rapunzel and a Simba Snow White. Ariel means so much for my childhood self so I *had* to have two ❤
My FAVORITE Little Mermaid dolls are from the 1997 rerelease. Both Ariel and Eric were great. I also liked the later Tyco dolls and of course the Disney Store dolls. 😊
Little Mermaid dolls were the GOAT of that time period, including the ones based on the TV series. So many accessories and props. I still have a few of them. I don't remember which specific Ariel doll I had. I found myself playing with Jasmine and Aladdin dolls more often though. Little Mermaid was reserved for bathtime.
i learned a fun fact about Ariel's pink dress and why we don't see it anymore. an Article and even a youtuber explained it was paying tribute to the past disney princess movies. the little tear drop printed upper puffs sleeves were for snow white, the color pink aurora, and the poofy skirt with the shorter upper layer was Cinderella. it sorta explains why we don't see future dolls in this dress these days possibly because it was an iconic tribute, and now with the later princesses the dress would of been outdated that and i guess they also wanted to give Ariel her own personal gown to represent her instead of a variety of other princesses. it's also said in the sequel Ariel's purple dress pays tribute yet again to two later princesses after her first film was made these princesses were, belle, and jasmine, and i think if i remember right a jewel on her dress or an accessory of some sort was Pocahontas.. it was a fascinating explanation, that, and it would probably be hard yet interesting to see at what type of monstrosity of a dress they could create with all the present princesses if they kept up paying tribute to them in other princess dresses.
I have a Disney Store Ariel doll, my doll’s legs don’t bend for her to sit. But I love the glitter ✨on her tail and top and my doll came with a brush for me to brush her beautiful red hair. And the box she came in is so beautiful even on the back with Ariel admiring her human treasures she collected.
I love Ariel, I love a good redhead. The movie came out the year before I was born so I don't remember watching it too much even though I'm sure my parents played it on vhs. My first Disney movie in theaters though was Pocahontas and after Mulan and those princesses are what I grew up with and love so much (even though both get hate)
Genuinely they should do an experiment and make one of the older dolls again and put them on the shelves of Mattel Disney dolls and see who picks what. Then the company will know what dolls people really like.
I had also the one with the pink dress and purple fin she is so beautiful I have so many brush her hair that my dad can find now today also red hair In the carpet and I had Eric and his dog too but I have not more😢 miss the dog the most
I have that first bright red haired Ariel doll as well :D I used to have ALOT of Barbies but I stopped playing with them at some point so my parents wanted to get rid of them and, by chance, I saw Ariel sticking out of the bag and I went "NO!!!! NOT ARIEL!!!" so to this day, I still have her. Together with my Pocahontas doll (Who I also had to save from the trash bag).
I think the live-action version a little mermaid is separate from what the original Ariel is so but it is nice to see where the animated version of started and to where it could be now
*fan squee!* LOL You mentioned my favorite TV episode! The one with Spot! I'm glad you loved it too. I still have my VHS copy. Still works! Wish the whale toy that came with that play set was bigger, and looked more like him. Such disappointment when I saw how... generic he looked. I found the dolls I owned from Tyco had really plastic feeling hair, and would often have issues brushing it out. Especially her bangs. If it got wet (yeah, I took her in the pool, sue me. She lives in the wattah! Lol) it became incredibly difficult. Destroyed the first doll I had trying to MILDLY re-curl her bangs. Nope. Melted. Didn't even have the heat that high. Disaster. Sad face. But I learned, got another one, and kept it in the box. Such a hard thing to do as a kid!! Also got the mermaid Barbie around the same Christmas with the pink outfit and gold crown. So beautiful. 🤩 Edited: I nearly forgot to rant about the old sea shell bras for Ariel. The ones without the jelly straps. Omg. The stupid do-up on the back reminded me of the cursed Ninja Turtle belts from 1993!! If you used it too much, that tiny "nub" broke and you'd be screwed. 💀
I actually had the Ariel doll with the baby mermaid Shelly! I don't know what exactly happened to the Shelly doll (I think I forgot she was her own character and not Barbie's youngest sister, who was called Kelly at the time) but that Ariel was my favorite, I used to put her in all kinds of outfits from other Barbies and knockoff fashion dolls. I really loved the plastic details like the sea stars and the star shaped floatie she came with. For some reason I can really remember the smell of the box, the doll always kind of had a distinct smell? It's really nostalgic to me, I wish I still had her.
Thank you for sharing this history, along with your dolls! I do wish that they'd given this new live action Little Mermaid dolls locs like Halle Bailey, but she is a stunning doll nonetheless.
The "Cool Teen" dolls were interesting to look up. The box claims they're based on the TV show and I did find info on Pearl, she features in 2 episodes, but couldn't find anything about Shelly. The artwork of Shelly on the box shows her main design with a purple/blue tail with pinkish fins, and there just so happened to be a mermaid with that exact design in the Episode 11 where Pearl is introduced. She has one voice line but isn't named (not even in the credits) and is next to Ariel when Pearl shows up, so I guess the doll company decided to include a random background character to make them a trio. Bonus the seaweed pizza is in this episode too, more evidence that this line was specifically based on it.
@tatsudragneel4761, what episode name is the seaweed pizza in with Pearl? The only episode I watched her in is where they went to a club. I watched it last year but I don't remember the episode name or episode number or season.
3:50 I had either the doll on the left here or 4:08 the top left one here. I can't really remember which one. I think it was the first one but the tails look very similar so its hard to tell.
I had many an Ariel doll growing up because she was my favorite princess, so I’m excited to see this! 🧜🏻♀️ (Hasbro Disney dolls were hideous tho they did my mermaid dirty) AW I had that Forever Hair Ariel! I got her for my 8th birthday, I loved her so much 🥹
I think I had one of the first Ariel dolls. I remember that she came with a little purple treasure chest that I was really fond of and I got so mad at myself when I lost it.
Thank you so much for this video and for your whole channel! I’m going through a tough time right now and your channel has really helped lift my mood and I can’t thank you enough! I hope you have a wonderful day 🫶🏼
i feel like the new mattel disney dolls will get better as time goes on. i feel like the transition from hasbro back to mattel they had to keep it smooth so they gave us the same that hasbro gave us. but i think they’ll improve soon.
oh I had one Ariel doll with just perfect face and super long hair, and now I only have a head on a skipper body bc life (I was a kid, things happen) I have no idea to this day what doll it was, it had a fabric tail and that's all I remember X"D I want new Ariel doll, but for now I didn't see any that is as cute and Ariel like like the one I have
Ariel is my favourite Disney Princess! These videos didn’t help me at all from giving in to buying the Tyco dolls I remembered seeing as a child!! PS. While I loved this video, I can’t wait to see your Barbie Movie haul x
I had 2 or 3 Mattel Ariel dolls as a child. I kept my favorite one. She's adorable. Her body and hair got really bad so I found her a new body, but I really need to fix her up. I never got around to that. I've repainted one doll, but I've never rerooted. It seems so daunting.
I was hoping so terribly that you would have the Ariel doll in this video, that I had when I was little. I LOVED that doll- but I cannot figure out who made it or what it was called. It had a rubbery tail, and when you squeezed her hips, the tail would move back and forth (not side to side). I've seen one other Ariel doll with this mechanism- but it wasn't the one I had had. I've wish for so long to figure out WHAT this doll was called- I'm still looking for it. Have you heard of one like this?
im a year late so you might've already found it lol, but as someone who collects ariel dolls, the only ariel i know of that had that mechanism was released in 2012 & was called "splashing ariel" but that might be the other one you mentioned. do you remember anything about what the doll looked like, or around what year you remember having it?
@@lunamoon2005 Sorry- I thought for a moment that this was it, but looking at it closer again, the doll I had did not have a molded top, and the tail wasn't clear. This is very close, but it's not quite right. This is the other doll I was referring to in the above comment, and I was so excited to think this was it, that I didn't realize for a moment that I'd already seen this one and ruled it out. Thank you for trying though!
@@lunamoon2005 The doll's top was pretty simple and purple with like, a sort or green shine in the light, and the tail may have also been made in this material, but I remember it being more substantial than fabric. Also the rubber of the tail was thick enough to obscure the mechanism inside. I also believe the tail may have been fully green- but I'm not sure. All I can say is it was likely between 1998-2003 that I had this doll, and that it did NOT have a molded top. It likely came out a year or more after the Barbies that had Kiko the whale.
Growing up I had this mini Ariel toy doll? They were called magic mates and they were created by thinkway toys. I had Belle and Ariel and I always found Ariel slightly scary. I looked it up and it seems like there were 6 released, 3 being Disney princesses. The Cinderella one is like really scary. I’m glad I didn’t get that one 😂
Those Tyco dolls were weird. I loved your video, it is amazing to see so many different Ariel dolls. I don't like the ones with the molded tops, plus Mattel's quality has really gone down hill on some of their dolls and clothes line. They have some exceptions but they should take more pride in what they produce.
When I was a kid, my aunt sent me a few Barbies from America and one of them was Ariel with the shiny teal / purple tale, a small section of her hair would turn to a different color in water, and I was the happiest girl in the world 😭😂
You totally missed the light up Ariel doll that sings. Her tail has water and glitter in it, and she had a button on her stomach. She was my personal favorite. I would remove her head and put her on a Barbie body and play along with the movie. Loved that doll.
Why do none of Ariel dolls look like Ariel exactly!?!? We make space ships that land themselves now haha. If I were to buy 1 doll, which one is the most accurate?
Trying to figure out which Ariels I had, I think they must have been some of the Tyco ones from the 90's; I had Ariel's pink dress, and like a platter that came with a Sebastian that fit under it, and I remember because I reused the platter for years. She definitely was more of a fit for Skipper than for Barbie, you are correct.
So, funnily enough I had the early 90's Ariel doll. She was my first 'Barbie'! (All fashion dolls were Barbies to my parents.) And because she was so short I think I always played her as getting annoyed that people kept thinking she was kid lol I was so disappointed I didn't have an Eric, but uh, looking at the Eric from that line perhaps I dodged a bullet. I ultimately ended up with an Eric from the line after, and the height difference was just as stark, but at least his face sculpt was better! TLDR: What do you mean Ariel's not just canonically very short!? XD
I LOVE she had RED hair 👩🏻🦰 because I HAVE Red hair, my hair is red strawberry blonde, and always LOVES THE BRIGHT REDNESS. As my hair colour is naturally strawberry blond, When I was growing older it was getting brighter when I was getting older. I have only one Character who I saved from a few years ago, when I was exploring back in 2010, who has Red hair and she has her great Green tail to play with, Who I had to take and save from a disappoint place in New Mexico. 🇲🇽 👩🏻🦰 🧜🏻♀️ She came out in 2014, from Mattel/ Disney, Her price these days in Australia,🇦🇺 she is $14.99.
I had the original Tyco Ariel. Not only was her hair the wrong color and she had the Skipper body sculpt, but her feet were flat. Like FLAT. It was super weird, but I loved the movie so much that I didn’t care.
I would love to see you do a whole evolution series of the rest of the Disney Princesses ❤
BRO I LOVE UR VIDS AESTHETIC PRINCE! INCLUDING THE DARWINS OMG SO GOOD ❤
Yesss, I would LOVE a video like this about Cinderella 😍

OMG SLAYY! Especislly Jasmine & Pocahontas ❤
Ariel always had the BEST dolls! I had the very first one with the little blue dress and I still love her! I do remember how her hair was the wrong color. It's super interesting to know the full story!!
The only Colour Reveal Barbie dolls I'd buy are just the mermaid ones, also Joey is a total daddy and we accept him for being gay.

I had that Ariel! Absolutely the best.
Did she have a purple hairbrush? Mine did and I can’t find her anywhere. I had her sometime between 1991 and 1995
Me too! I can't find a picture of her anywhere on the internet.
I had that doll too. She was my favorite. If I recall one of my legs popped off at the hip too but my dad was able to snap it back on.
The early 00’s disney store ariels were hands down my favorites

I'm so early! I am seriously your biggest fan. Your content has helped me through so much. Never stop being you! You have a beautiful heart ❤️
There's no such thing as being "early" to a video, it's not logically possible.
3:50 I had either the doll on the left here or 4:08 the top left one here. I can't really remember which one. I think it was the first one but the tails look very similar so its hard to tell.
I had many an Ariel doll growing up because she was my favorite princess, so I’m excited to see this! 🧜🏻♀️ (Hasbro Disney dolls were hideous tho they did my mermaid dirty)
AW I had that Forever Hair Ariel! I got her for my 8th birthday, I loved her so much 🥹
The weird looking dolls are hilarious 😂
I think I had one of the first Ariel dolls. I remember that she came with a little purple treasure chest that I was really fond of and I got so mad at myself when I lost it.
Thank you so much for this video and for your whole channel! I’m going through a tough time right now and your channel has really helped lift my mood and I can’t thank you enough! I hope you have a wonderful day 🫶🏼
i feel like the new mattel disney dolls will get better as time goes on. i feel like the transition from hasbro back to mattel they had to keep it smooth so they gave us the same that hasbro gave us. but i think they’ll improve soon.
the tyco Eric doll has seen some horrifying stuff in his days. 😂
oh I had one Ariel doll with just perfect face and super long hair, and now I only have a head on a skipper body bc life (I was a kid, things happen)
I have no idea to this day what doll it was, it had a fabric tail and that's all I remember X"D
I want new Ariel doll, but for now I didn't see any that is as cute and Ariel like like the one I have
I remember I had a tyco one who got stolen at the swimming pool, I was so sad!!!
But I find the same doll at a thrift, was so glad!
They really through with the Halle Bailey Ariel dolls
19:08 Very beautiful! 💖
19:55 The third one above is very beautiful, too! 🥰
Ariel is my favourite Disney Princess! These videos didn’t help me at all from giving in to buying the Tyco dolls I remembered seeing as a child!!
PS. While I loved this video, I can’t wait to see your Barbie Movie haul x
Under the sea, under the sea part of your world
I had 2 or 3 Mattel Ariel dolls as a child.
Just discovered ur channel and I'm hooked! Have u ever done vids on the Barbie PC games of the 90s/2000s?
Please do this with the rest of the princess!
I LOOOOOVE the Ariel Halle Bailey dolls, they're so stunning
I just saw the new little mermaid and I loved it. She did amazing job. and I had less swim Shelly.
Thank you for this video, a wonderful birthday gift❤🎉
When I was a kid, my aunt sent me a few Barbies from America and one of them was Ariel with the shiny teal / purple tale, a small section of her hair would turn to a different color in water, and I was the happiest girl in the world 😭😂
there all quite beautiful
You totally missed the light up Ariel doll that sings. Her tail has water and glitter in it, and she had a button on her stomach. She was my personal favorite. I would remove her head and put her on a Barbie body and play along with the movie. Loved that doll.
Red hair doesn’t sell???? Both myself and my kids gravitate to the ones with red hair.
5:26 OH MY GOD THAT ONE MERMAID ON THE BOTTOM RIGHT LOOKS LIKE HER SISTER KARINA
16:14 holy crap my sister had this doll when she was little and it sat on her shelf and it was so creepy lol
My favorite doll i had was a 2005 Ariel who’s tail lit up 🥰 i cant wait to get Halle’s!
XD
I LOVE she had RED hair 👩🏻🦰 because I HAVE Red hair,
my hair is red strawberry blonde,
and always LOVES THE BRIGHT REDNESS.
As my hair colour is naturally strawberry blond,
When I was growing older it was getting brighter when I was getting older.
I have only one Character who I saved from a few years ago,
when I was exploring back in 2010, who has Red hair and she has her great Green tail to play with,
Who I had to take and save from a disappoint place in New Mexico. 🇲🇽 👩🏻🦰 🧜🏻♀️
She came out in 2014, from Mattel/ Disney,
Her price these days in Australia,🇦🇺 she is $14.99.
I have 2 Ariel Dolls
One from Wreck-It Ralph 2
And classic version from spin and swim 👍
I would love to see a evolution of Disney castle toys there’s so many haha ❤ and I love these videos
I have the first Ariel I 5 when I got her and didn't know any better
I had the original Tyco Ariel. Not only was her hair the wrong color and she had the Skipper body sculpt, but her feet were flat. Like FLAT. It was super weird, but I loved the movie so much that I didn’t care.
