In England; Middle -Ages villagers went "a-souling" around All Soul's Day [Hallowe'en] and through to Christmas tide. Singing or chanting from door to door praying for the dead, as they begged for a soul cake, an apple, a coin… this is the precursor to Trick or Treating… which shows just how old the custom is … I dare say it is also the precursor to Christmas Carolling (long fallen by the side - though we did it when we were kids) singing carols from door to door in hope of a bit of money. Today kids just walk from store to store inside the Shopping Mall for free chocolate bars lol…. thanks for the History Lesson Mr. Sting.
Is this what the English called mummering? I know there were mummers in Newfoundland up until the last century who would walk from door to door singing Christmas carols, usually dressed in bizarre outfits and getting a reward, which was often of an alcoholic nature. By the end of the evening the mummers would be quite inebriated. The Canadian singer Loreena McKennit also does a song called the Mummers dance.
Do not know about her "classical" training...but here an example of how she played some years back... ua-cam.com/video/ot4F2VOJJKQ/v-deo.html&ab_channel=Tadhg46
@RUNTINGS its just because its a back rythm from the full orchestra version, so some of the instruments arnt there. and it happens the tamberine is in the back rythm.
My English teacher played this song in class he said he just played it to get it stuck in our heads all day, it worked but it actually is a pretty good song, good singer to but I like the wrestler better.
Its Engllsh... soul cakes were traditionally given to feed the dead on Hallow'een, in the hope they wouldn't bother the living. But the dead don't eat much, so beggars got the notion of asking for them... so it's a begging song.
Watch the hilarious situation that develops at 2:52 . The Brunette violinist hoots, and the blonde violinist next to her scowls at her a few seconds later! Ha-ha it’s like she is thinking "chill out bitch!”
A fine performance, but one sadly overshadowed by the disgraceful fact that Sting is wearing a scarf INDOORS. This is very bad form indeed and a cause of great displeasure to any right-thinking gentleman.
***** you are kidding me… the guy can sing Rock, Ragge, Blues, Country, Early English Folk music, has a firm understanding of harmony, melody, several instruments, can sing, arrange, write all of the above, has won grammy's, sold out concerts, own severals homes across the globe, is respected for his Environmental Stand, but yeah Rover, he should retire… give your head a shake
she is playin the shit outta that violin and LOVin it
I absolutely LOVE watching the brunette violinist!!! She's having fun AND is amazing too! What an incredible group of performers! 😊❤
Eileen Ivers!!
@@goose5B Thanks! 😊

The backing singer on the right is just gorgeous! She's so mesmerizing! I LUV THIS SONG!!!!
Gosh, that's breathtaking and the violin lady rocks!
+Lukáš Tomeš the violin lady is ileen ivers, check out her albums she is amazing!
This has been trained to freaking perfection. It sounds exactly like the original one...
DOPE performance. Sting is a damn good musician.
The brunette violinist is Eileen Ivers (appearing tomorrow night (12/23/10) in concert in downtown L.A., or so I am told).
Sting could read names and numbers from the phone book and come up with a great song, love it :)
Sting is the man.
This is really wonderful. I love this song, and I love this performance of it.
Sting,the best............hug from Serbia!!!
When i was young i loved sting music and sometimes ill try to imagine his music when he get older, there is still magic, amazing, thanks.
His voice is so wise! Love it!
simply love this song, especially in sting's version... he made a musically sophisticated folksong out of this classic... fabulous
The violin steals the show
He sings his past...always the same when you get old, you return to your past...
Thats what live music is all about!
Sting and his flock!! nice!
Muy buen tema,sting Como siempre extraordinary.
Beautiful
He seems so happy singing
That brunette violinist can really play! Classically trained fiddler.
Do not know about her "classical" training...but here an example of how she played some years back... ua-cam.com/video/ot4F2VOJJKQ/v-deo.html&ab_channel=Tadhg46
goose skin after first sounds..wonderful
Wow, without a drum, but full of rythm!!
wonderful
I love the music
If yall don't 2 step to that fiddle, check your pulse 'cause you're dead. I ❤ Sting x infinity!
Master class
If there was ever a male diva sting is the one...been listening since the turtles cd
@RUNTINGS its just because its a back rythm from the full orchestra version, so some of the instruments arnt there. and it happens the tamberine is in the back rythm.
God bless you
Well done Sting!
how can one dislike this???
My English teacher played this song in class he said he just played it to get it stuck in our heads all day, it worked but it actually is a pretty good song, good singer to but I like the wrestler better.
Wuow❤
Happy Xmas time....
wish i cld buy this on Apple Music...
When i first heard i honestly thought it was a joke it's not like sting to sing something like this but now i really like as it is different!.
FORMIDABLE!
Its Engllsh... soul cakes were traditionally given to feed the dead on Hallow'een, in the hope they wouldn't bother the living. But the dead don't eat much, so beggars got the notion of asking for them... so it's a begging song.
The ultimate modern minstrel ...in everything he's done not just this obvious tilt at that almost ancient idea.
👌👌
+huborg is it too late to answer now? that wonderful lady is Jo Lawry, she has amazing voice!
@RUNTINGS He's holding something very small in his right hand.
@RUNTINGS It must be a fretles tambourine.
Watch the hilarious situation that develops at 2:52 . The Brunette violinist hoots, and the blonde violinist next to her scowls at her a few seconds later! Ha-ha it’s like she is thinking "chill out bitch!”
@RUNTINGS thats really trippy
@RUNTINGS hahah no he's holding a shaking egg, do you know that?
have you noticed that the guy in the back is ment to be playing a tamberine...??? Where is it...???
@RUNTINGS Seems like he has a shaker in his hand. maybe?
Look at the violinst, she seems so happy, I would be too, if I had the luck to play this kind of music instead of swedish folk music -.-
@RUNTINGS You can see it clearly at 2:56 :)
Thumbs up so people will know :)
Is that Eileen Ivers on the fiddle?
i couldn't find the name of the blond lady in the back in this perfomance! though i have seen her in other concerts as well. any idea who she is??
It's Jo Lawry, singer from Adelaide, Australia :)
@Rigga07
it's a fiddle...
Who is the wonderful fiddler?
I believe it is Eileen Ivers. You might have seen her with a blue violin on the Riverdance show.
@LordMontystink wait what?
only good people can see it
@mrracak he he yeah
It's an old Celtic song that is over 600 years old... Sorry but it is not biased on your Italian song, if anything the Italian song is based on this.
Please tell us you are from Sunderland.
maybe it's a small electrical thing inside his hand that gives the sound of a tambourine. but i agree. why not use a real one?
jacobekelundarbast it's a bead filled shaker
He's shaking an egg...one has like seed in it. I have one at home...
@LeGioNnd
LOL!!!! :D
It's an egg-shaped shaker :P
Obiwan Kenobi
funny
y wiz khalifa toca la pandereta!jajajajaja
hahahahahahahaha!!!
it looks like music-hour at the local asylum. love sting but this is just plain wrong.
Stings voice is in a mess on this.
Andie Laidlaw I think it is lip synced
Ohhhh dear.......
I really don't like this.
Sting looks like he's really lost it in and is mixing with the oddball set.
Truly awful.
A fine performance, but one sadly overshadowed by the disgraceful fact that Sting is wearing a scarf INDOORS. This is very bad form indeed and a cause of great displeasure to any right-thinking gentleman.
String is dreadful. Time to retire (in the 1970s).
Like your life then?

Rover Coupe Holy shit.. you have absolutely no sense of what good music sounds like
