    Regrettably with age I now realize that I have never properly appreciated magpies while I was growing up, their penchant to swoop during breeding season was probably the main reason for that.
    I now have a son (11yo at the start of our first magpie encounter) and quite by the inquisitive behaviour on the magpie's part we have now befriended the local pair of breeding magpies in our area. We now have mostly daily visits where we have the opportunity to feed (magpie friendly food - including supplements) to our breeding pair.
    I am grateful that my son now gets to hear their beautiful caroling while gentling stroking their breast and feeding them magpie friendly food. Magpies and their visits truly are a gift and I am so happy we have been selected for visits by our local breeding pair.

    In UK. One of my first bird "rescues" was a magpie found in the middle of a country road, unconscious but alive. He recovered and eventually I put him back where I found him. I've never heard them sing in UK, just chatter. They look impressive but can be aggressive to other birds.

    We live in the country and have a magpie tribe claiming one paddock, which is surrounded by tall trees, as their turf. Over many years we have noticed that their calls slowly seemed to change. They are using a shrill whistle much more frequently than they used to. I watched this whole video and I couldn't hear this shrill call. An interesting thought occurred to us recently. Our magpie tribe is quite isolated and is it not possible that they have evolved a new language to communicate. I mean, why not? They have the capacity to make a great variation of sounds and obviously communicate using them. Maybe this is similar to how different languages evolved with primitive humans. Just a thought🤔

      @@peterviragphoto We made a video featuring this shrill call it is called "Australian Magpies calling". Our property is somewhat isolated and the birds behave quite differently to the ones in the city. We would be interested in your thoughts on our language theory

      @@wildhomevideos I just had a quick look & also subbed to your channel and will be watching it again later. Their calls sound amazing! As they have complex vocalisation and able to mimick other birds and even imitate calls of other species ( e.g. dogs ), I was wondering if yours were doing the same. I’m not an expert but maybe someone who knows calls of native birds might be able to identify the species they were potentially mimicking. Cheers

    • @wildhomevideos
      @wildhomevideos 11 місяців тому +1

      @@peterviragphoto Thank you Peter. I think you are partially correct. We have a lot of Ring-necked parrots in our area and the second part of the magpie shrill whistle sounds similar to the sound the Ring-necked parrots make when they are startled or alarmed as they fly away. We have lived here nearly 30 years and have notice this call developing over a long period. At first they would only use it when they spotted a snake and called for support to gang up on the snake. The call was always immediately acted upon by other magpies, the butcherbirds and often the raven. We have also noticed that the magpies try to protect the Ring-necked parrots from the Goshawk. So I think this might have originated from the Ring necked parrots but they have adopted it for their own use. It is no longer just an alarm call. Now they seem to use it to announce their position before they start yodelling. And it is answered in the same way from the other side of the paddock which is quite large. As you know, an empty paddock surrounded by tall trees is prime realestate for a magpie and they have to defend it from the neighbouring magpie tribes. Maybe they realised that this is a good way for the sentries to communicate with each other over long distance and have incorporated it into their language.

      Between the almost digital sound of the magpie, the death metal shriek if the sulphur crested cockatoo, and the monkey like laugh-bass drum combo of the kookaburra, Australia's birdsong is very different to the classical melodies of the other continents.
