This is a good example of what appear to be silent vocalisations but are believed to be sections of call that transcend the sonic range of human hearing.

How cool is that?! I'm pretty sure their vocal range extends outside of human hearing - we can only hear half of it, I reckon.

What a delightful video. Definitely a conversation going on. The look of "How rude!" astonishment on the face of the bird that was left when the other flew off made me chuckle.

If we all plant some trees and plants they like, we will see them come back in great numbers.
N.b: They dont live in paddocks.
Anything with a nectary flower like flaxes, fiejoas, pohutukawa, kowhai, bottlebrush.......take your pick and plant up your 2 dimensional paddocks .

Almost fifty years ago I planted a 2m kowhai by a section of blank two-story wall at my new house. About 15 years later I had a window into my upper-level dining area put into that wall. You could watch the Tuis' antics as they fed right outside the window. About another fifteen years later I built a large deck around two sides of the house, one side being where the tree and window were, I didn't have the heart to cut the kowhai down for the deck, and built the deck around it at one-floor height. Now, about another 15 years later, the kowhai's trunk is distorting the hole in the decking, it's about 4m higher than the roof, drops leaves, flowers and seeds all over my roof and deck, but I don't care when I get to see the tuis feeding every spring!

@@flamencoprof I like that. I'm in an urban area where I hope to have Tuis in my backyard section one day. Unfortunately only a few can be seen or heard in Spring or any other time. When they do come by I'm estatic seeing them at my neighbours house feeding away or high above on my Silk tree singing.

I can't tell if that is a rap battle between two rival males or a male/female couple. The females are smaller than males. That looks like two males fighting it out, but it often turns nasty with physical attacking between males, whereas these two are quite civil.

They are both the same color but the female is smaller and usually has a smaller white tuft or poi.
