That's crazy that this video popped up in my feed today. I met Sgt. Haven at the Golden Gate Bridge one day and he spent about 30 minutes talking to me about the job. I love motorcycles, and always thought being a CHP motorcycle officer would be amazing. I was always intimidated by the process, but Sgt. Haven talked me through everything and convinced me to apply. I test this Saturday with Golden Gate Division. A huge thank you to Sergeant Haven for his time and kindness.

I remember training for motor school with Sgt Haven. It’s nice to see him illustrating the important aspects of training. He makes the motors look like the “Top Guns” of the CHP. Outstanding job sir. Way to be locked on and represent the department in the best light.

20 years ago here in NJ an officer friend of mine was attending the Harley Davidson Motor School in PA. He called me a day before he left in a panic before he realized he didn't have a leather riding jacket. So I let him use mine, on the first day the instructor came over and told him: The last time I saw leather that tight it was still on a cow 😆 After the 2nd day training he called me and said he didn't think he could do it, his arms were beyond sore from purposely dropping the bike all day and picking it up. But he pulled through and graduated! Stay safe all officers!

This is a well done video. My oldest brother rode motors for the CHP for 15 years. He worked the freways of southern Cal and also taught motors at the academy. It was a great job! He transferred to northern California and went back into a patrol car. He retired after 39 years on the job. He has some great stories from those 39 years.😄
I have attended many conferences with law enforcement speakers.
A disproportionate number of the speakers(Captains, Chiefs, etc.) have a hard time formulating complete sentences. Sgt. Haven is well-spoken and seemed to genuinely care about his officers. I’m reading other comments that he helped his fellow officers prepare for motor school as well. Having served in the military, my last six years in Special Forces, it is refreshing to know the true caring and camaraderie still exists between supervisors and the rank and file. Sgt Haven is an exemplary representative of the CHP and the State of California. Thank you for your service, Sgt. Haven!
Awesome to see! Sergeant Haven helped me out once when I had a mechanical issue with my vehicle and I was stranded on the shoulder of the highway. He was professional, courteous and had a calming demeanor. He figured out how to get me assistance and made my day go from horrible to great! His uniform and motor cycle were very clean and well kept. He is an outstanding representative of the California Highway Patrol!! Thank you Sergeant for your service!
As reserve firefighter back in the day and EMT , I’ve had the pleasure of working side by side with CHP , absolutely love these men and women, nothing but respect.
I have loved the California Highway Patrol ever since 1977 when motorcycle officers Jon Baker and Frank "Ponch" Poncherello recruited me via CHiPs as the solved crimes far and wide on their 'bikes.

Sergeant Haven is squared away. Besides running the motor squad and being a large part in the development and training of new motor recruits, he is down to earth and easy to talk to as a supervisor. It takes a special person to take time out to mentor others like he does. Keep up the good work Sergeant.
WOW! Sgt Haven is SAVAGE! Only 3 years on a bike and in charge, training new motor officers and sharpening their skills…very impressive. Even other people are learning from Sgt. Haven in this video. Read the comment of SoCalsandman learning ‘perishable skills’. Sgt. Haven must be an amazing asset to the Marin office and the CHP department in general. You can tell by this video he is squared away, he pays attention to detail and must be highly respected by the officers he supervises. They would only put the best in their videos so obviously, Sgt Haven is in this video. Great video!

Glad I stumbled on this. I rode for 7 years of my career in Colorado. Best and most dangerous job I had in the PD. I started on KZ1000 until the PD went to Road Kings. Loved the Harley but they don’t like being ridden off curbs. You will lose your stand spring! Motor school is a head game for those of you interested. Trust your machine and most of all trust your instructors. They know what they are doing. Also, if you don’t pick your bike up at least 50 times in training, well, your a motor god.

I spoke with a couple of CHP’s just the other day about their hiring. They were very honest and opened my eyes to some other departments. They talked about quality of life for CHP versus other departments. I can have four days off per week with just about any other police department, CHP gets two days off and I have to go to LA or the Bay Area-no thank you!

Not a fan of cops, admittedly, but I’ve NEVER met a motorcycle cop that wasn’t an absolute professional with great people skills! They’re just different than their other colleagues. Much respect to them.

Competitions are held at Huntingdon Beach, San Diego, and San Francisco. Officers from the USA, Canada, and Mexico participate.

The best CHP officers I ever worked with were all motors from Golden Gate division.
I’d like to know more about the bikes. Looks like most are Road Kings but I also saw a metric bike, maybe a BMW. Enjoyed the video.
The uniformed officers were riding Harley Electra Glides or BMW R1250RT-P motorcycles. The 2 students were riding Harley Road Kings.

How long is motor school for officers i.e. weeks or months before actually pass??
Motor school is two-weeks. Officers return to the CHP Academy for training, it is a very challenging school to pass.
I think it would be interesting to hear officers view points comparing the BMW to the Harley CHP motorcycles
I ride both - the harley being a 2020 Electra. I'm a harley guy through and through, but the BMW is a better patrol bike. It accelerates faster, stops faster, and is more nimble. The harley is a good patrol bike, but the BMW is better.

Hey, I'm from Poland (and 12), I've always liked CHP, Maybe someday in the future I will move to the US, and at least try to join the CHP. Also I have a question, Do you have Troopers or Officers at the CHP?

Buy a motor to train before you go to motor school? Thats crazy! Not the norm for most agencies. Most would perfer that you have no major experience so they dont have to break all of your bad habits. Most motors i work with in mh agency dont have a personal bike.
