This works (sort of) in the current version too. But in order to activate the elevator you need a garage door to push you slightly in to the back wall.

But why even make the elevator? Why not just stop at the ladders, thats quite easy to climb and its just as fast, why waste a bunch of time placing hatches? Idk i just run ladders its good like that.
I read a comment that said you only need to dig down past 6 blocks and the zombs dont dig down and will just go away. He was right, that was a time saver. From having to try an fenangle this dumb hatch thing. Gave up halfway because the terrain is such a hassle to use. It wasnt as simple as dig straight down and place a ladder back to the top, oh no, it was dig down and then realize the contours in the way the terrain falls prevents you from climbing the ladders you place so you have to go through a try to smooth it all out. In all i wasted an entire day trying this useless method and settled on a 7 block deep base with just a simple ladder. This is meta, anything more is unnecessary and a hassle.

It is a pretty fun version of 7 Days. I'm glad I gave it a go before hopping over to the PC version.

Would this work on PC as well? Not necessarily to make a base but just to get in and out of mine shafts really quickly.
It doesn't work on PC, at least not as shown here. You can build something similar, but it is kind of a pain to replicate this on PC.

The hatch elevator does not work on PC. The devs absolutely hated it and specifically made it a point to remove it from the game.

You have to get lucky with loot or trader inventories. There is no guaranteed place to get one. Just gotta keep looting.

It is a massive time saver in the end. Just fall off the edge to reach the bottom, use the elevator to get back to the top.
