You might have missed it but for a couple of years those effects work also with precomps for generating depth maps from 3d layers which make those really more useful : check adobe's introduction to that: ua-cam.com/video/Oh9GJmND2jc/v-deo.html
This is great for using the C4D render engine in your ae 3d comps as the camera depth of field does not work with that render engine. This way you can dupe your comp make one copy the depth map and toss on your favorite blur that reads depth maps.
From the knowledge, I gained from your "CC Mr. Smoothie" effect(An effect, otherwise I never would have bothered to check), I took that "Depth Matte" effect further. Instead of Depth Matte, I use depth layer as a Luma Matte and Remap with "Mr. Smothie" and another Shape Layer with gradient fill.
Hey Jake, Seeing this, I think It'd be worth talking about the new 3D Channel Extract Effect. It's quite powerful as it allows you to create depth mattes from your 3D Compositions made inside AE with any Engine including the new Advanced 3D Engine. Also combines nicely with FL Depth of field

Wow, I had no idea. Thanks for the tip!
So what I’m taking from this video is you can apply to a pre-composition and it looks inside the comps 3D data in the render.
@@elissitdesign you got it right

Hmmm 🤔 I think I like that fog effect. Other than that I'll stick with my cc camera lens blur.
