I've made a number of t-shirt quilts and the walking foot makes it so easy to sew your blocks together. I made one for a young boy who had lost his dad. They were all his dad's favorite t-shirts and I used the backs as the backing fabric. The young boy said it felt like he was getting a hug from his dad and he could still smell his dad on them. It made me feel good to be able to give him such wonderful memories. 🥰
Old, New, In Between: I love MSQC & ALL, & I can watch their videos over & over! Love learning & exploring! Thank you Natalie, Misty, Liz, & ALL❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I bought the kit after watching this video. Turned out so great! I skipped the batting and backing and put luxe fleece on the back. My graduate LOVED it. Thank you, Natalie!!!!!!!
Natalie I made a friend a t-shirt quilt from his Apple shirts. Some of the logos were too close to the neck openings to cut, so I included the neckline in my square. Then I cut a strip of the shirt fabric deep enough and wide enough to fill the neckline up. Finally I stitch Ed along the neck edge to secure that strip, when you sew it to sashing or another t-shirt it’s completely finished and gives a bit of texture and uniqueness to the overall quilt.
I have had one going for each kid....I have made the tshirt square as they grew out of the tshirt and stored them in the project box that you can get in the MSQC store. Then near high school graduation I took them out and made them quilts.
Thank you - I've been thinking about making a T-Shirt and didn't know where to start. You took the mystery out it and excellent video. Thank You :) 💗💗😃
Love this super idea of saving those T-shirts and making a memory quilt with it. I need to check out Natalie's class for this too. Thanks so much Misty and Natalie!
I recently made a quilt for a firefighter that was at the fire in 2007 that claimed the life of 9 firefighters in Charleston, SC. His wife gave me a shirt she wanted to include that was the shirt he had on when he came home wearing it. She said it was the shirt he came home to her safely that day.😢😘
My favorite lap quilt is a blend of pieces fabric and t-shirts. It was made by a Missouri 4-H Youth Program Assistant (Pat Wood - Lynn County, now retired) as a challenge to use some old 4-H t-shirts (4-H day with the St Luis Rams if that tells how old). I won it in a silent auction. It’s amazing to have focus squares with t-shirts and pieces squares around them. Wish I could share a picture in the comments.
I love this! I have been wanting to do this with some worn out but really loved t-shirts and now I know what to do! I just need to know how to get Natalie’s kit so I can get this party started! Thank you so much for all you do for us in the quilting family 😊
I had heard of this idea, but your quilt actually looks great. My husband buys t-shirts from every holiday so this would be a great idea for all his international shirts. He has on old shirt from the '70s with Nebraska Cornhuskers on it. Doesn't fit anymore but I'm not allowed to throw it out. This one can be the first block. Lol.👍🇦🇺
Thank you Natalie so much for all your work I really love this tutorial and I bought the kit so I could make my own out of my husbands clothing for my daughters for the past year and a half ago🥺
I tried to sew a memorial t-shirt quilt without stablizer and it kept putting holes and getting caught in my shirts. After I used stablizer it worked great.
If you know anyone who crochet, save the backs for them. T-shirt yarn is expensive. Try to keep the shirt in as large a piece as possible. Then make them crochet something for you 😆
If you used double sided fusible, could you put another tee shirt on the back and cut and sew all of them? Like a sheet? No batting? Or would it feel too stiff?
This kit would have made the T-shirt quilts I have made so much easier. With the leftover material from the shirts I cut them into one inch strips, then sewed them together end to end and crocheted rugs, braided strips together and made placemats and coasters. Just cannot throw any fabric away.
Great kit! Be careful with polyester shirts and some designs melt under the iron. I have had trouble with the interfacing peeling off. Any suggestions?
Great tip on protecting the front when pressing . Ask me how I know LOL! At least I only did it once. Great time cleaning my iron . Natalie you're looking great. What's your secret?
Question: typically when you sew with knit fabric, you have to use a stretch needle and polyester thread. With this stabilizer added to the back, can you use a regular needle and cotton thread?
This is a great instructional video. I don't think you mentioned batting. What kind of batting would you recommend for this type of quilt? would cotton be best? Or a poly/cotton blend?
The question I have - I haven't done a full quilt, but I did once use a t-shirt just as the center block and the heavier inks on the shirt square started to melt off whenever I ironed on the backing/seams - how do you prevent that? Was my iron just turned up too high or is there a trick for it?
Ok, just a few seconds after I posted this, Natalie answered my question in the video - I needed a pressing mat on top of the ink! If anyone else has this question and missed it - she said you could also just lay an extra scrap of tshirt over the ink to protect it from the iron if you don't have a pressing mat. 🙂
Where is the other video class link you mentioned would be in the description box please! There are 4 links, but none are for the other tshirt quilt video :(
I’ve made many t-shirt quilts using Eleanor Burns’ pattern. About to make one and I’m paying attention to this tutorial because some of the shirts are nylon. Not sure I can iron them.
I am looking for the video tutorial link that came with the KIT. (the kit/box that included the backing and binding and batting, and the papers, etc.) It's over an hour long and shows much more details. Like how to use long sleeves with logos, and sports jerseys and how you fill in the empty armholes, etc. I was able to watch it once and wasn't able to start my project unfortunately because I got cancer and had to get my health back this year. Please find that video tutorial for me. Thanks!
I measured the design on all of the shirts, then cut them all the largest size. Mine happened to be 15” big. That became my block size for all of the shirts.
@@elizabethboger9424 thank you. I tried making one in a class at my LQS, but the instructor was not very clear in her instructions, so I made a mess of it. The top is now in a plastic bin waiting for the backing and quilting. I am so disgusted with the way it turned out, which is very sad because some of the T-shirts are very special to me. Maybe someday I'll get it out and finish it. It has several places where I had to fill in with backing strips to make it come out even and it looks terrible.
@@carolhall9074 Carol, I'm sorry you are so discouraged at how it turned out, but maybe the backing strips that you filled in with can be used to embroider (or use fabric markers) key words you like, such as "grace", "joy", "family", etc. Or if it's school or concerts t-shirts, the name of the school, team, teammates, dates attended, band names, etc. Hope you will feel motivated soon to finish and enjoy those tee-shirts in their new format!

I've done the same by including some of the neck line. No question that it's a tshirt quilt : ) T he recipient lived the little added touch. ♡
Great tutorial! Thank you Natalie!!

Love that quilt. I want all those T shirts to make one. You two work so well together. Love the natural banter.

Love the Harry Potter table runner! I’ve been searching for the house crest panels.
I love Natalie, always positive and laid back.
I too make a lot of T-shirt quilts ... I find my walking foot works great for putting the squares together
I feel more comfortable trying this t-shirt quilt. Thank you
Just ordered the kit and Natalie’s class! Can’t wait to receive it and get started!
I made my daughter a "Hooters" quilt from her tops and shorts she wore at work. I also used the money/tip bag. It turned out very cute!
I bought your kit and made a tee shirt quilt for a friend loved your kit
I love the template you designed, really will make the trimming process so much easier.
Thanks Natalie and Misty for showing me how to make a T-shirt quilt. Now I feel like I could make one also 👍
I am with you T-Shirt Quilt. With your instruction I am going to tackle this this summer .Thanks for getting me start

congratulations Natalie. Great project kit. Hi Misty!!
Such a good idea 👍👏🥰💐love it
LOVE THIS! I already have my pattern, template, stabilizer, and online class NOW all I need to do is make those quilts for my daughter and husband.

Thanks for the great video. I’m going to be making my first t-shirt quilt soon. ❤️✂️🪡🧵

This kit is a fabulous idea. Love, love, love it.!
Very good you tube. Love the directions.
I tried to sew a memorial t-shirt quilt without stablizer and it kept putting holes and getting caught in my shirts. After I used stablizer it worked great.
Very nice ladies, good job. 👍❤️😊 thanks for sharing

I use leftover strips of T-shirt material to make covered hangers which are great for shirts that are more slippery
Great kit! Be careful with polyester shirts and some designs melt under the iron. I have had trouble with the interfacing peeling off. Any suggestions?
Wool mat time for the interfacing...
Thank you I was hoping you would do a t-shirt tutorial 😘
this was really half tutorial plus i have way more shirts
Super-fun!!!!
Great tips thanks for sharing.
I use the Teflon pressing sheet that protects the print.
This was great! Thanks so much!
Looks like fun to me.
Thank you, been wanting to do this. This will help.
Thank you, Natalie!!!!
you could embroidery something on the back of the t-shirt if you needed a extra block
I am getting ready to start a tee shirt quilt for my oldest (14) grandson with all his ball team shirts, trying to build the nerve to start
I love all the things Natalie does!
Do you guys have any tips on the best batting for t-shirt quilts? Thanks!
The 80/20 cotton/poly blend has a nice drape and comes in black if you have a lot of dark shirts.
Any suggestions on how to quilt new born to 12 months baby oneses and jammies?
Great team effort!!
Great tip on protecting the front when pressing . Ask me how I know LOL! At least I only did it once. Great time cleaning my iron . Natalie you're looking great. What's your secret?
I wet my template to easily remove the backing paper.

What about tech t-shirts that are not cotton?
This is a great instructional video. I don't think you mentioned batting. What kind of batting would you recommend for this type of quilt? would cotton be best? Or a poly/cotton blend?
Is iron on interfacing for T-shirt quilts different than other interfacing that’s also iron on?

Do you make double sided tee shirt quilts?

I used my daughter’s dresses, pyjamas to make her quilt for her daughter’s baby shower
I’ve made many t-shirt quilts using Eleanor Burns’ pattern. About to make one and I’m paying attention to this tutorial because some of the shirts are nylon. Not sure I can iron them.
Use the sleeve as a test bit.
Have you ever used baby blankets.
Can tee shirts be of any fabric content?
I am looking for the video tutorial link that came with the KIT. Any left over T-shirt fabric and make T-shirt yarn.
Where is Natalie’s deep dive class? I am not seeing the link?
How do I buy a kit
Suppose the design on your shirt is larger than the template? What do you do then?
I measured the design on all of the shirts, then cut them all the largest size. Mine happened to be 15” big. That became my block size for all of the shirts.

Missouri star quilt company
What did tou do for the corners of each shirt in the quilt?

Sometimes high school art departments will accept and use the t-shirt backs for rags
