Hey Dami. I designed the software handling the beam forming sound system live management for the Sphere (made by Holoplot). We worked with engineers, acousticians, interviewed sound engineers to make something that could tackle the immense quantity of speakers, their 3D placement, the needs of live bands VS classic entertainment, and the complexity of the sound landscape. It's really when you get into the numbers that you realize how crazy this project is. I'm a little bit amazed that it is actually going to open and that all was built within acceptable deadlines. You must feel that often working as an architect: a mix of feelings, proud of the great work you've done on a very innovative project, and at the same time, puzzled that you have participated in such an ego project.
Not friendly environmental. Laughting about how they are making us feel that we are the ugliest people using our AC too much, but when becomes of wasting all that energy in a desert that its all fake. Well, just the naives believe in their climate emergency xoxoxo
What about creating an artificial and natural boundary for the sphere to be in its own environment. During the day it can be visible from outside and at night it isn’t hence blocking the light. Entrance to this outside section could be very affordable to everyone.
I live near the sphere and every night it is so beautiful and it looks so peaceful and realistically beautiful. I was thinking it will look so artificial but it oddly doesn’t.
Good point, if your in Vegas your already dealing with a lots of neon, artificial light and noise, so a f ing big dome ain’t going to seem to out of place. But if your in a suburb of London with a decent view of trees and allotments. Then I’m sure it will be a nightmare at times beautiful at others. But I’d go and see it whilst a concert was playing or if they screened an England game on it.

I was going out to dinner a month or whatever ago and it was lit up as the Moon, changing phases and all. One of the most impressive things I've ever seen.
Since there's already these absurd minimum parking laws, maybe the outside could accommodate a big staggered parking platform to work as a drive-in theater. Would probably cost a lot du buy. The kind of money that only those golfers can afford.
If they lit it up as the moon or even better as the universe but cgi rendered like those color images of "The pillars of creation" But maybe a simulated ride that artists can send us through notable places kind of like how star treck cgi slow sceens, mixed with a new simalr effect of wormhole when they transition to a new location and even some light speed/ warp speed effects thrown in. I think it would be an epic learning oportunity for children about our universe. Secondly I think playing one of the large aquariums as a screen saver is particularly relaxing. I've always had dreams of flying fish as a child. MAKE IT SO!
This channel is super interesting. And I really appreciate a UA-camr who doesn't shout their excitement and talk 'at' (cos it's a video). I feel like we just pulled up a chair over a coffee and it quickly becomes obvious there are millions of ineteresting things in your head.
One correction to an otherwise great video - the opera in Vienna has been projecting it's concerts onto a projected wall outside the venue for many years. A few other classical music venues have followed.
It would be pretty easy honestly- monolithic dome construction using structural foam that could double as sound dampening. You could possibly even do it in existing rooms using a palletized unit you attach an appropriate " balloon "to.
There are instructions available for building a semi-spherical room with a projector for use with the planetarium program, Stellarium. You can build your own planetarium. Think Stellar Cartography from Star Trek: TNG.
Vegas resident here. It is without exception, the greatest performance or entertainment venue that has ever existed. Not that it needed it, but the opening of this venue has put Las Vegas once again front and center on the world stage.

I've seen this thing in person...... and it's insanely innovative. You probably wouldn't think much of it until you actually get to see it in person. The amount of detail just from the outside is one of the greatest pieces of technology I've ever experienced. One of the more decent views is from the top of the Flamingo parking garage if anybody plans on going to see it. Obviously it looks way better at night. I kept thinking about what it must look like at night when planes are flying by it. No matter where you are around it, every single angle has it's own unique viewing experience of it. I literally felt like I was looking into a magic portal at times. I really can't explain it in too many words besides... MESMERIZING. I can only imagine what the experience is going to be like on the inside and I honestly can't wait.

I have an idea. You could build a MSG Sphere in a place that has enough space to put a giant amphitheater around half of it on the outside. So you could sell outdoor tickets to the concert. This could still provide a unique experience, and it would provide a chance for people who couldn't afford an indoor ticket, to see the bands, and experience the unique show from the outside. This will also encourage people to save up for an inside Sphere concert. It would end up being two separate unique experiences out of one concert. We need to bring back the big concerts. And we need to bring back the affordable tickets without diminishing the quality of the musical, visual, and artistic experience. The opportunity to make money by selling food and drinks, and other things that people buy would double with the outdoor venue.

The sad reality is - No matter how amazing a project like this may be, the only folks who will profit out of this are people who are already REALLY rich. Like you said - Idea might be to display entertainment on the exterior screen, but in reality it will be just a massive billboard for ads.
How did you come to that conclusion? The people building it will be paid for their time, the area around it will have a large influx of people, there will be new stores, hotels and other venues popping up to service the customers visiting the sphere. Locals can AirBnB out their homes if they wish, there will be 100s of jobs created keeping the sphere running, new building techniques will be used, which might help people in other areas, those things are always hard to predict. People from near and far will also have an experience that wouldn't be possible otherwise, making their lives richer. Travel agencies will make money booking people different trips to the place. They will also generate profit, which means they will be paying tax, both local and national. There will also be a market for industrious people to sell things to the tourists, drinks, hot dogs, toys and other things. Will the guy that took a 2.3 BILLION dollar risk to buy this likely make the most money? Sure, but if it fails, he stands to lose 2.3 BILLION dollars. So saying that only the owner will make money from this is frankly stupid.

Newsflash. Humans will always affect our environment. The goal is to keep it in check. A massive ball of LEDs consuming energy in a state that is quite gifted with thousands of square miles of unused land that gets sun more than 300 days of the year, is fine. It's also not being built in the middle of the wilderness, it's built in an urban environment dominated by humans. Chill and go comment on BPs channel, they're doing worse things for the environment.

I am delighted to hear so many good comments on this project. Yes, it could be called gaudy, advertisey, bright, obnoxious... but it's also an experience unlike anything else we've invented. Plus, it puts the inside contents on the outside so EVERYONE can share in the experience, making this a truly public work of art. And I mean that, it's art. This is the kind of thing that looks awesome at first but gets really old really fast. In a more limited way you can indeed compare it to what an IMAX is in relation to a normal theater screen. Looks really cool but has a limited application. In any case the idea of having music concerts in this thing seems like a bad idea. But a kick ass plenetarium for sure.
@@AllTheArtsy No. Bigger screens changes the field of view, which make video designed for narrower FOVs look distorted and uncomfortable to view on. Almost all video simply wasn't recorded in IMAX resolution and they require large, heavy, noisy cameras to record properly. Something most productions will never adopt. IMAX themselves had to scale back the size and resolution of screens in order to get better market share and even still it's not anywhere near every screen because people don't view it as worth the extra expense at every step.
it displays alot of art, plus who said ads are inherently non-artistic? most of the ads i've seen on that thing have been absolutely spectacular, living near there it makes my world feel so magical!
The operating costs of the sphere and the maintenance costs could be this projects downfall. The other examples shown, like the Sydney Opera house would be cheap to run compared to this!
Its stupid expensive, they need maintenance workers in rope harnesses to reach some of the LED panels that will eventually need servicing. Having worked in the display tech industry for decades, I am dissappointed to see that they opted for a giant LED wall instead of innovating with current laser projection technology and optics. Currently, IMAX Omnimax dome theaters use laser projectors which is projected on a dome plastic screen with thousands of holes so the IMAX speaker system behind can play sound through the screen without distortion. Its 2023 and we have the laser projection technology, its just so sad they went this inferior route because it seemed easier, but actually the laser projection system costs less to maintain in the long run.
Dami, this would be a prime project for you to critique and share with all of us! I have so many questions that could be addressed! Who was the Architect? Who was the structural and mechanical engineers? How are certain things handled on the inside, like HVAC, Lighting, Fire Protection so that it does not interfere with the visual affect! Make a great video and would probably more than pay for itself!
Yeah I feel it's one of the very first things we built that actually reflects the modern era. This is futuristic. It's monumental what was achieved here.

I'm curious to know how weather will affect it over time. I can't help thinking that this is like having a TV outside in the elements. How will things like UV rays, flash flooding, and dust/dirt affect the lifespan of the screens? I'm sure we're all aware of the planned obsolescence of our tech. Is this any different do you think? Also, does the sphere get hot? And with the parking area being so large, will the concrete heat up the area around it by some number of degrees? ...Just wondering 😅Great video as always, Dami! 💗
Absolutely share your concerns. Reminds me of the ‘millennium dome’ aka o2. Completely pointless vanity project when basic infrastructure of this country is crumbling. As for the sphere, not seen it and it’s not up and running yet so I should not opine but the parallels are clear to me.
We drove over to see it last week, very impressive up close..... but I noticed that it had a row of screens ( about 20 feet long ) already out. A friend said there was 3 of those "dead areas" already.

there are lots of cameras capable of filming spherical videos, the other option is to use a few cameras, projections exist, it's just a little basic math, lots of existing software has you covered, youtube even has a special mode for it
An amazing design that will be an experience to behold for many, but those of us with motion sickness, couldn't handle movement watching this for any length of time past a minute or so. I already get motion sick at IMAX, on Disney's Soarin or any of Universal Studios's spherical displays, cruise ships, and more. Just adding this to my list of things I unfortunately won't be able to do.
Who will be the first group to hack the sphere? That is my first thought when it comes to the use and abuse of the massive thing. Love your insight and breakdown of all of these amazing and crazy projects!
@@dx-ek4vr I never said it would, all I pointing out is that your expecting is someone going "mission impossible" inside a sphear, probably beneth the thing beyond a staff area, security doors, constant surveillance, and expect it to be plug and play, which probably its not. All of it is rather unrealistic. Consdiering they have developed a special camera just to make images for it, understand how much money is invested to make it work. I dont think they will neglect in security.
I was in Las Vegas last weekend and took in the view from the nearby High Roller. While it is pretty amazing to look at, I was surprised by the number of faulty or dead LED panels on the exterior of the sphere. Not enough to ruin the experience, but it was very noticeable during some of the various video sequences that were being displayed. I wasn't able to see the inside, but judging by some of the proposed prices for tickets to the events held there, I think it will be very unlikely that I will anytime soon. Seeing it during the day is very different than the night time viewing experience, so for now I just think of it as a novelty that was fun to see once, but I don't plan on making a return trip just to see it again.
After visiting the Norman Foster expo in Pompidou and few days later the Guggenheim in Bilbao, I can say that while I love the innovation, some of it seems to go against human nature, particularly when we are talking about visual and acoustical overloads. Napoleon’s Malmaison is the antithesis to it. Linear yet rich, focused yet complex, it encapsulates enlightenment much better than a giant polluting sphere which even on the inside will overwhelm the watcher. As much as I love the special programs at the sphere of the Villette, a standard theatre will leave you more centred and hence more involved with the content than a purely visual overload.
Firstly when this video intrudeced me this sphere, I thought that this indeed is a monument to our modern technology, but the purpose of entartaing so many people from all around the world, for so much energy and such a huge impact on the environment it made me feel devasted all along with the amount of work invested by so many talented people for such a long time. It would be really sad for the designers of this buildings to see it fail financially. In these matter Dami is correct, this project really is a gamble.
I think that part of the reason why the Las Vegas Sphere will not have too much of an outside venue is the crazy heat. Las Vegas is in a desert area; unless you are a heat-loving person, you will end up fleeing inside to get out of the oven and into survivable temps.
That's so dumb to build it in Vegas. China would have been a better bet. And even in 30 Million people area like Chongqing I would have judged this.. overproportionnated. Dumb use of money
A couple of years ago my neighbor got a flood light that he leaves on ALL NIGHT. Not only do I not sleep but the cardinals and other birds that have been nesting in my yard for 25 years don't come back anymore. It's been 2 years. They're not coming back, my back yard is now inhospitable to them. I wish everything wasn't so unnatural. I love my UA-cam and NetFlix, I'm not against some technology, but I loved more sleeping soundly and waking up to the chip-chipping of cardinals and sounds of the world waking up. BTW, the last thing humans need is more ad venues, noise, 24/7 light, and more consumerism. Just a thought.

Exploring and searching out structures built 800 to 1000 years ago by the Anastazi and Pueblo people's who inhabited that region in those times. He also shares the elaborate petroglyph and rock drawings of those peoples. He is a very sensitive explorer always considerate of not disturbing the ancient sites or artifacts still present at many of the dwelling locations. I think you and Andrew could do a neat video with your architectural background and his very deep interest in ancient living spaces. All the best Dami!
This is a perfect example of contemporary frivolous mentality, where on one hand we diligently measure the energy footprints of residential homes; and crack down on individuals to be greener, whilst corporations and industry make mad pointless projects like this. So much 'starchitecture' and useless megaprojects are being made worldwide - destined to failure. This is unarguably dazzling: and a marvel of structural engineering, acoustics, electronics and architecture. No doubt we need to make iconic monumental projects like these. But... they ought to have some sort of point. Beyond carrying home cash in freight trains. Do you really see this surviving for more than twenty years as any more than a fad? Look at IMAX... and movie theaters in general. These kinds of purposeless enormous money wells always look cool on paper. Yet eventually without fail; they collapse under their own weight.
At first I thought it was just an unnecessary extravagance, but after seeing how much energy this thing needs, I think it should be considered an environmental crime

Not sure if I like it (because it was really cool and beautiful), or if I think it was overkill, way too expensive and obtrusive for the surrounding area, but when it comes to artists who would play a gig in such a building, my first thought was Jean Michel Jarre. This venue seems like the perfect fit to his sci-fi music and multimedia shows. Also - thanks for a great video, as always!
Seems like the public viewing areas, because of the (relatively)small sites, are very close in. Like sitting in the first row at the movie theatre. Not good.
I've been to Vegas a few times and something like this brings fresh content to the city that is competing on a world stage. Without innovation can we progress? as you said this is a project that defines an era. To have 3D, 360° objects that project light? this falls to me under what the Eiffel tower did back in the day.
It's a lot of money, but it's absolutely magnificent and beyond awesome. I've added a visit to that sphere on my bucket list, and honestly i don't really have a lot of stuff on that bucket list
My biggest question from this video is how is U2 still selling out concerts? I’ve never heard a single person bring them up, except people mad their album came default on iPhones that one time.
Their fan base is enormous for the middle age crowd (growing up in the 80s) and their music is relatively inoffensive and ever-present, typical background grocery store music. I put them on the same level as say, coldplay. You probably know at least one of their songs, even if you have never willingly chosen to listen to them.
Really awesome project for sure! But the amount of speakers alone feels like its going to be a nightmare to maintain down the road 😂😅. So many potential points of failure 😅

The ONLY way to make any sort of money back on this project would be to show advertisements 24/7. But it just seems like so much to upkeep and maintenance you can already see strips of LEDs not working, speakers will stop working, etc. what if there is a fire? it's very cool and impressive but i just dont see it being very long term as it will get harder to maintain as time goes on.
Can we please stop making "jobs for the sake of jobs". All this project is going to achieve, is lining some more greedy corpo pockets at the expense of taxpayers and the climate.

I saw it in person a few weeks ago. The magnitude is jawdropping against an already enormous architectural skyline. It truly makes you feel like you are living in the future you envisioned as a child. This feels bizarre to say, but 2.3 billion was worth it. It is so impressive when you are near it. For being the current (and forseeable) best all-ages eye candy in Las Vegas, it will be a small price to pay. That audio system is obscene. I didn't even know that. You can simply get lost in it. It's the digital scrying mirror and it fills you with a child-like wonder and pride in humanity.
I moved to Vegas about a month ago and I was very surprised to see it in person while driving towards the Strip on our first night. I think that the Sphere is a perfect venue for EDM shows and other Live DJ Events. There’s actually people in the EDM visual space who work with arts to pioneer this kind of 360 experience. I got to experience a short show like this at Bass Canyon last year, at the Gorge in Washington. I think they’re had this kind of visual show for around 3 years now. The sphere isn’t apart of the venue it’s something that they assembled each year. I have a good feeling the sphere will get lots of use once people see how it can be utilized and once they figure out a stream line way to make 360 graphics. People are more worried about the upfront costs but I’m sure as soon as people figure out how to work with it it’s probably gonna have shows every night. I think this could definitely be a cool way to do an art show of some kind. I also wouldn’t be surprised if South Korea is the first country in Asia to get one of these built. Imagine they did, I know for sure BTS would figure out an insane show for it then they could tour to all the Spheres, that would be great. I would 1000% go to that show. I’d also go to any show they do, but the Sphere would be so unique and different that I wouldn’t miss for anything.
I'm not a tech or architecture person, but I do know that history is replete with brand-new fancy cutting-edge technology that quickly get forgotten by the wayside for simple, practical, boring, cost-effective, easy-to-use-and-access products. 3D TVs, 3D movies, VR, the Kinect, so many times industries have tried to wow us with sometimes actually amazing technology (i.e. the Kinect was so ahead of its time it was eventually repurposed into facial recognition software we use today), but it was either too obtuse for developers or too inconvenient for consumers to make it viable. The sci-fi geek in me wants to see what the Sphere can do, but the practical side who's been through like 8 of the 9 console generations isn't holding their breath.
That’s kind of my feeling, too. The Sphere is dazzling in when it’s used to its fullest potential (my sense of it just based on this video alone) but there’s a lot of upfront costs to using it to its fullest potential. I suppose MSG will have a lot of canned, off-the-shelf exterior and interior effects but how many companies (besides, say, Wilson an Spaulding or maybe Replogle) are going to leap at the opportunities for spherical advertising _or,_ as the video points out, how many performing groups will want to put in the time and cost for developing a performance for this venue?
Construction is responsible for about 40% of all CO2 emissions, big cities are filled with ads, and parking spaces, and people are asking for more walkable cities with more bike space and green areas that can help reduce the extreme heat. And we give them a 2.3 billion $ 10MW space heater of a glowing spear. Honestly I feel like you could have made so many better things with that money. But it is a cool over the top project and as long as the people leaving and having a business nearby are not bothered by it, it might become a famous building like other over the top projekts. But I sure hope they do not have homeless people nearby, cause nothing says bad priorities as having people leaving on the streets nearby extravagant buildings.
The demand for tickets for shows at the sphere will be huge. It won’t be cheap, but it’s truly unique experience you won’t get in any other place. Looking forward to visit!
Living in Vegas, you get used to a lot of gaudy, weird stuff. You also get to see a lot of really amazing ideas come to life. The Sphere is one of the latter. For all the complaining that you hear from certain quarters, there's no doubt that it is quickly becoming one of the 'must see' venues in Vegas - up there with the Bellagio fountains.
This "Sphere" was inspired one of Sweden most recognizable buildings: Globen. Placed in Stockholm, they created a solar system, where the Globen is the Sun. Then they created landmarks around the city.

I'm glad Londoners, especially those living so close to the 2nd possible sphere site, are having a meaningful say about the environmental impact. We usually think of environmental impacts as something affecting natural elements, but when it's right outside your home bedroom window, as the East London sphere would be, it takes on a far more personal and distinctly urban meaning. The first astounding thing is wondering where they intend to put the solar panels. The second was actually the color oil light projector psychedelic visual audio experience. Some of the best concerts, house parties, or raves I've been had that. Sober or not it's extremely beautiful. So, yeah, the sphere should definitely do that! Like, hey I like U2, but when is Pink Floyd coming to Vegas? ❤
as someone who works in the professional entertainment industry, specifically concerts, I can say: internationally the problem is NOT that we don't have enough extremley big and advanced venues to put on gigantomatiac shows. It's that these kind of shows get more and more expansive while less and less people are willing or able to watch them. Even amongst the shrinking number of artists who can still pull such audiences, most of the production they take on international tour was dramatically downsized in Post-Covid-era. Shipping highly specialized equipment across oceans is just not economically feasible and so most productions for shows have to work with stuff they can either buy or rent on each side of the atlantic for example. Even bands famous for their advanced live shows like Rammstein - most of their shows are pretty tame compared to something like THIS. There are several orchestra buildings across the globe that were built for hundreds of millions - and most of them are not even close to fully booked. Instead productions book more simple multifunctional arenas because they are cheaper and its more easy to put on a show there. And for several years now, even most of THOSE shows got cancelled or postponed due to lack in presale ticket sales. I can absolutely imagine 100% the tour managers of basically every big international artist turning down playing in a venue like that (even if there were several all across the globe) with the insane extra effort and cost that comes with that. Its easily double the staff, and specifically trained and extra expansive staff at that. It is just completely out of tune with the problems and requierements of modern day touring and concert production.
Would be cool to see a part 2 video to connect this to Learning from Las Vegas by Denise Scott Brown, Robert Venturi, and Steven Izenour. The observations made here definitely connect back to that work and other research of media+architecture by previous architecture think tanks like OMA.

Hey Dami. I designed the software handling the beam forming sound system live management for the Sphere (made by Holoplot). We worked with engineers, acousticians, interviewed sound engineers to make something that could tackle the immense quantity of speakers, their 3D placement, the needs of live bands VS classic entertainment, and the complexity of the sound landscape. It's really when you get into the numbers that you realize how crazy this project is. I'm a little bit amazed that it is actually going to open and that all was built within acceptable deadlines. You must feel that often working as an architect: a mix of feelings, proud of the great work you've done on a very innovative project, and at the same time, puzzled that you have participated in such an ego project.

What about creating an artificial and natural boundary for the sphere to be in its own environment. During the day it can be visible from outside and at night it isn’t hence blocking the light. Entrance to this outside section could be very affordable to everyone.
I live near the sphere and every night it is so beautiful and it looks so peaceful and realistically beautiful. I was thinking it will look so artificial but it oddly doesn’t.

One correction to an otherwise great video - the opera in Vienna has been projecting it's concerts onto a projected wall outside the venue for many years. A few other classical music venues have followed.

There are instructions available for building a semi-spherical room with a projector for use with the planetarium program, Stellarium. You can build your own planetarium. Think Stellar Cartography from Star Trek: TNG.

I've seen this thing in person...... and it's insanely innovative. You probably wouldn't think much of it until you actually get to see it in person. The amount of detail just from the outside is one of the greatest pieces of technology I've ever experienced. One of the more decent views is from the top of the Flamingo parking garage if anybody plans on going to see it. Obviously it looks way better at night. I kept thinking about what it must look like at night when planes are flying by it. No matter where you are around it, every single angle has it's own unique viewing experience of it. I literally felt like I was looking into a magic portal at times. I really can't explain it in too many words besides... MESMERIZING. I can only imagine what the experience is going to be like on the inside and I honestly can't wait.

I have an idea. You could build a MSG Sphere in a place that has enough space to put a giant amphitheater around half of it on the outside. So you could sell outdoor tickets to the concert. This could still provide a unique experience, and it would provide a chance for people who couldn't afford an indoor ticket, to see the bands, and experience the unique show from the outside. This will also encourage people to save up for an inside Sphere concert. It would end up being two separate unique experiences out of one concert. We need to bring back the big concerts. And we need to bring back the affordable tickets without diminishing the quality of the musical, visual, and artistic experience.
The opportunity to make money by selling food and drinks, and other things that people buy would double with the outdoor venue.

The sad reality is - No matter how amazing a project like this may be, the only folks who will profit out of this are people who are already REALLY rich.
Like you said - Idea might be to display entertainment on the exterior screen, but in reality it will be just a massive billboard for ads.
How did you come to that conclusion? The people building it will be paid for their time, the area around it will have a large influx of people, there will be new stores, hotels and other venues popping up to service the customers visiting the sphere.
Locals can AirBnB out their homes if they wish, there will be 100s of jobs created keeping the sphere running, new building techniques will be used, which might help people in other areas, those things are always hard to predict.
People from near and far will also have an experience that wouldn't be possible otherwise, making their lives richer.
Travel agencies will make money booking people different trips to the place.
They will also generate profit, which means they will be paying tax, both local and national.
There will also be a market for industrious people to sell things to the tourists, drinks, hot dogs, toys and other things.
Will the guy that took a 2.3 BILLION dollar risk to buy this likely make the most money? Sure, but if it fails, he stands to lose 2.3 BILLION dollars.
So saying that only the owner will make money from this is frankly stupid.

This is the kind of thing that looks awesome at first but gets really old really fast. In a more limited way you can indeed compare it to what an IMAX is in relation to a normal theater screen. Looks really cool but has a limited application. In any case the idea of having music concerts in this thing seems like a bad idea. But a kick ass plenetarium for sure.

Bigger screens changes the field of view, which make video designed for narrower FOVs look distorted and uncomfortable to view on. Almost all video simply wasn't recorded in IMAX resolution and they require large, heavy, noisy cameras to record properly. Something most productions will never adopt.
IMAX themselves had to scale back the size and resolution of screens in order to get better market share and even still it's not anywhere near every screen because people don't view it as worth the extra expense at every step.

The operating costs of the sphere and the maintenance costs could be this projects downfall. The other examples shown, like the Sydney Opera house would be cheap to run compared to this!
Its stupid expensive, they need maintenance workers in rope harnesses to reach some of the LED panels that will eventually need servicing. Having worked in the display tech industry for decades, I am dissappointed to see that they opted for a giant LED wall instead of innovating with current laser projection technology and optics. Currently, IMAX Omnimax dome theaters use laser projectors which is projected on a dome plastic screen with thousands of holes so the IMAX speaker system behind can play sound through the screen without distortion. Its 2023 and we have the laser projection technology, its just so sad they went this inferior route because it seemed easier, but actually the laser projection system costs less to maintain in the long run.

Dami, this would be a prime project for you to critique and share with all of us! I have so many questions that could be addressed! Who was the Architect? Who was the structural and mechanical engineers? How are certain things handled on the inside, like HVAC, Lighting, Fire Protection so that it does not interfere with the visual affect! How will things like UV rays, flash flooding, and dust/dirt affect the lifespan of the screens? I'm sure we're all aware of the planned obsolescence of our tech. Is this any different do you think? We drove over to see it last week, very impressive up close..... but I noticed that it had a row of screens ( about 20 feet long ) already out. A friend said there was 3 of those "dead areas" already.

there are lots of cameras capable of filming spherical videos, the other option is to use a few cameras, projections exist, it's just a little basic math, lots of existing software has you covered, youtube even has a special mode for it

You did a really good job on this video Demi.
An amazing design that will be an experience to behold for many, but those of us with motion sickness, couldn't handle movement watching this for any length of time past a minute or so. I already get motion sick at IMAX, on Disney's Soarin or any of Universal Studios's spherical displays, cruise ships, and more. Just adding this to my list of things I unfortunately won't be able to do.
Who will be the first group to hack the sphere? That is my first thought when it comes to the use and abuse of the massive thing.

I never said it would, all I pointing out is that your expecting is someone going "mission impossible" inside a sphear, probably beneth the thing beyond a staff area, security doors, constant surveillance, and expect it to be plug and play, which probably its not.
All of it is rather unrealistic. Consdiering they have developed a special camera just to make images for it, understand how much money is invested to make it work.

Not going to lie i love it it's weird and fun looks great can't wait too see it in person.
I was in Las Vegas last weekend and took in the view from the nearby High Roller. While it is pretty amazing to look at, I was surprised by the number of faulty or dead LED panels on the exterior of the sphere. Not enough to ruin the experience, but it was very noticeable during some of the various video sequences that were being displayed. I wasn't able to see the inside, but judging by some of the proposed prices for tickets to the events held there, I think it will be very unlikely that I will anytime soon. Seeing it during the day is very different than the night time viewing experience, so for now I just think of it as a novelty that was fun to see once, but I don't plan on making a return trip just to see it again.
After visiting the Norman Foster expo in Pompidou and few days later the Guggenheim in Bilbao, I can say that while I love the innovation, some of it seems to go against human nature, particularly when we are talking about visual and acoustical overloads. Napoleon’s Malmaison is the antithesis to it. Linear yet rich, focused yet complex, it encapsulates enlightenment much better than a giant polluting sphere which even on the inside will overwhelm the watcher. As much as I love the special programs at the sphere of the Villette, a standard theatre will leave you more centred and hence more involved with the content than a purely visual overload.
Firstly when this video intrudeced me this sphere, I thought that this indeed is a monument to our modern technology, but the purpose of entartaing so many people from all around the world, for so much energy and such a huge impact on the environment it made me feel devasted all along with the amount of work invested by so many talented people for such a long time. It would be really sad for the designers of this buildings to see it fail financially. In these matter Dami is correct, this project really is a gamble.

I think that part of the reason why the Las Vegas Sphere will not have too much of an outside venue is the crazy heat. Las Vegas is in a desert area; unless you are a heat-loving person, you will end up fleeing inside to get out of the oven and into survivable temps.

A couple of years ago my neighbor got a flood light that he leaves on ALL NIGHT. Not only do I not sleep but the cardinals and other birds that have been nesting in my yard for 25 years don't come back anymore. It's been 2 years. They're not coming back, my back yard is now inhospitable to them. I wish everything wasn't so unnatural. I love my UA-cam and NetFlix, I'm not against some technology, but I loved more sleeping soundly and waking up to the chip-chipping of cardinals and sounds of the world waking up. BTW, the last thing humans need is more ad venues, noise, 24/7 light, and more consumerism. Just a thought.

Exploring and searching out structures built 800 to 1000 years ago by the Anastazi and Pueblo people's who inhabited that region in those times. He also shares the elaborate petroglyph and rock drawings of those peoples. He is a very sensitive explorer always considerate of not disturbing the ancient sites or artifacts still present at many of the dwelling locations. I think you and Andrew could do a neat video with your architectural background and his very deep interest in ancient living spaces. All the best Dami!

This could be a convergence point where some of the most inspired art could be birthed. Just the renderings in this video were blowing my mind.
This is a perfect example of contemporary frivolous mentality, where on one hand we diligently measure the energy footprints of residential homes; and crack down on individuals to be greener, whilst corporations and industry make mad pointless projects like this. So much 'starchitecture' and useless megaprojects are being made worldwide - destined to failure. This is unarguably dazzling: and a marvel of structural engineering, acoustics, electronics and architecture. No doubt we need to make iconic monumental projects like these. But... they ought to have some sort of point. Beyond carrying home cash in freight trains. Do you really see this surviving for more than twenty years as any more than a fad? Look at IMAX... and movie theaters in general. These kinds of purposeless enormous money wells always look cool on paper. Yet eventually without fail; they collapse under their own weight.
At first I thought it was just an unnecessary extravagance, but after seeing how much energy this thing needs, I think it should be considered an environmental crime

Sound was fantastic and I'm a fan of U2 anyway. It was definitely worth it and I can't wait to see who else plays there so I can go again.
Not sure if I like it (because it was really cool and beautiful), or if I think it was overkill, way too expensive and obtrusive for the surrounding area, but when it comes to artists who would play a gig in such a building, my first thought was Jean Michel Jarre. This venue seems like the perfect fit to his sci-fi music and multimedia shows. Also - thanks for a great video, as always!
It's Las Vegas. If there is a place to make something epic, flashy, and completely over the top, that's the place to do it.

Seems like the public viewing areas, because of the (relatively)small sites, are very close in. Like sitting in the first row at the movie theatre. Not good.

I've been to Vegas a few times and something like this brings fresh content to the city that is competing on a world stage. Without innovation can we progress? as you said this is a project that defines an era. To have 3D, 360° objects that project light? this falls to me under what the Eiffel tower did back in the day.
With 18K capacity ticket prices must be expensive to catch a concert there.
It's a lot of money, but it's absolutely magnificent and beyond awesome. I've added a visit to that sphere on my bucket list, and honestly i don't really have a lot of stuff on that bucket list

My biggest question from this video is how is U2 still selling out concerts? I’ve never heard a single person bring them up, except people mad their album came default on iPhones that one time.
Their fan base is enormous for the middle age crowd (growing up in the 80s) and their music is relatively inoffensive and ever-present, typical background grocery store music. I put them on the same level as say, coldplay. You probably know at least one of their songs, even if you have never willingly chosen to listen to them.
Really awesome project for sure! But the amount of speakers alone feels like its going to be a nightmare to maintain down the road 😂😅. So many potential points of failure 😅

The ONLY way to make any sort of money back on this project would be to show advertisements 24/7. But it just seems like so much to upkeep and maintenance you can already see strips of LEDs not working, speakers will stop working, etc. what if there is a fire?

I love musical immersion of all kinds great and small, but this does make me wonder if we are Spinal Tap turning to 11 just a hare with this one. I'm glad to see both angles represented here. I'm going to go listen to some bluegrass now, but set my Philips hue lights to a cool vibe. That'll show em.

I saw it in person a few weeks ago. The magnitude is jawdropping against an already enormous architectural skyline. It truly makes you feel like you are living in the future you envisioned as a child.
This feels bizarre to say, but 2.3 billion was worth it. It is so impressive when you are near it. For being the current (and forseeable) best all-ages eye candy in Las Vegas, it will be a small price to pay. That audio system is obscene. I didn't even know that. You can simply get lost in it. It's the digital scrying mirror and it fills you with a child-like wonder and pride in humanity.

I moved to Vegas about a month ago and I was very surprised to see it in person while driving towards the Strip on our first night. I think that the Sphere is a perfect venue for EDM shows and other Live DJ Events. There’s actually people in the EDM visual space who work with arts to pioneer this kind of 360 experience. I got to experience a short show like this at Bass Canyon last year, at the Gorge in Washington. I think they’re had this kind of visual show for around 3 years now. The sphere isn’t apart of the venue it’s something that they assembled each year. I have a good feeling the sphere will get lots of use once people see how it can be utilized and once they figure out a stream line way to make 360 graphics. People are more worried about the upfront costs but I’m sure as soon as people figure out how to work with it it’s probably gonna have shows every night. I think this could definitely be a cool way to do an art show of some kind. I also wouldn’t be surprised if South Korea is the first country in Asia to get one of these built. Imagine they did, I know for sure BTS would figure out an insane show for it then they could tour to all the Spheres, that would be great. I would 1000% go to that show. I’d also go to any show they do, but the Sphere would be so unique and different that I wouldn’t miss for anything.
I'm not a tech or architecture person, but I do know that history is replete with brand-new fancy cutting-edge technology that quickly get forgotten by the wayside for simple, practical, boring, cost-effective, easy-to-use-and-access products.
3D TVs, 3D movies, VR, the Kinect, so many times industries have tried to wow us with sometimes actually amazing technology (i.e. the Kinect was so ahead of its time it was eventually repurposed into facial recognition software we use today), but it was either too obtuse for developers or too inconvenient for consumers to make it viable.
The sci-fi geek in me wants to see what the Sphere can do, but the practical side who's been through like 8 of the 9 console generations isn't holding their breath.
That’s kind of my feeling, too. The Sphere is dazzling in when it’s used to its fullest potential (my sense of it just based on this video alone) but there’s a lot of upfront costs to using it to its fullest potential. I suppose MSG will have a lot of canned, off-the-shelf exterior and interior effects but how many companies (besides, say, Wilson an Spaulding or maybe Replogle) are going to leap at the opportunities for spherical advertising _or,_ as the video points out, how many performing groups will want to put in the time and cost for developing a performance for this venue?

Construction is responsible for about 40% of all CO2 emissions, big cities are filled with ads, and parking spaces, and people are asking for more walkable cities with more bike space and green areas that can help reduce the extreme heat. And we give them a 2.3 billion $ 10MW space heater of a glowing spear. Honestly I feel like you could have made so many better things with that money. But it is a cool over the top project and as long as the people leaving and having a business nearby are not bothered by it, it might become a famous building like other over the top projekts. But I sure hope they do not have homeless people nearby, cause nothing says bad priorities as having people leaving on the streets nearby extravagant buildings.

The demand for tickets for shows at the sphere will be huge. It won’t be cheap, but it’s truly unique experience you won’t get in any other place. Looking forward to visit!
Living in Vegas, you get used to a lot of gaudy, weird stuff. You also get to see a lot of really amazing ideas come to life. The Sphere is one of the latter. For all the complaining that you hear from certain quarters, there's no doubt that it is quickly becoming one of the 'must see' venues in Vegas - up there with the Bellagio fountains.
This "Sphere" was inspired one of Sweden most recognizable buildings: Globen. Placed in Stockholm, they created a solar system, where the Globen is the Sun. Then they created landmarks around the city.

I'm glad Londoners, especially those living so close to the 2nd possible sphere site, are having a meaningful say about the environmental impact. We usually think of environmental impacts as something affecting natural elements, but when it's right outside your home bedroom window, as the East London sphere would be, it takes on a far more personal and distinctly urban meaning. The developers might consider providing relocation support to the abutters. Or local authorities could set a statutory limit on the lumen output after a certain hour, e.g., when the pubs close...

The first astounding thing is wondering where they intend to put the solar panels. The second was actually the color oil light projector psychedelic visual audio experience. Some of the best concerts, house parties, or raves I've been had that. Sober or not it's extremely beautiful. So, yeah, the sphere should definitely do that! Like, hey I like U2, but when is Pink Floyd coming to Vegas? ❤
That said nothing can really go beyond ZOOTV somehow.... Which is why I prefer more simpler conceptual aesthetics.

Truly spectacular. We should have spheres and domes like this around the world for artists and bands to tour the globe
as someone who works in the professional entertainment industry, specifically concerts, I can say: internationally the problem is NOT that we don't have enough extremley big and advanced venues to put on gigantomatiac shows. It's that these kind of shows get more and more expansive while less and less people are willing or able to watch them.
Even amongst the shrinking number of artists who can still pull such audiences, most of the production they take on international tour was dramatically downsized in Post-Covid-era. Shipping highly specialized equipment across oceans is just not economically feasible and so most productions for shows have to work with stuff they can either buy or rent on each side of the atlantic for example. Even bands famous for their advanced live shows like Rammstein - most of their shows are pretty tame compared to something like THIS.
There are several orchestra buildings across the globe that were built for hundreds of millions - and most of them are not even close to fully booked. Instead productions book more simple multifunctional arenas because they are cheaper and its more easy to put on a show there. And for several years now, even most of THOSE shows got cancelled or postponed due to lack in presale ticket sales.
I can absolutely imagine 100% the tour managers of basically every big international artist turning down playing in a venue like that (even if there were several all across the globe) with the insane extra effort and cost that comes with that. Its easily double the staff, and specifically trained and extra expansive staff at that. It is just completely out of tune with the problems and requierements of modern day touring and concert production.
