Mark Lowry is an absolutely phenomenol singer; and wrote this gorgeous song! He introduced David Phelps to the Gaithers! It is my all time favorite song!
I'm sure you know my now the lead singer was Mark Lowry, who also wrote this glorious song. Also the pianist is Gordon Mote. Who was born blind. The other singer is Guy Penrod.

Gordon Mote is playing the piano. He was born blind. He is a phenomenal piano player. He is from Gadsden AL. He also graduated with honors from Belmont University. He used to be a member of Lee Greenwood's band. He has won 3 ACM awards for Piano Player of the Year. He has a great singing voice as well.

I could go on and on about Mark Lowry, he is a comedian, song writer, preformer and I got to meet him. He's good people. Guy Penrod, good old boy, has some amazing songs and writer. These men have blessed me for many years and I can't wait till we sing around the throne together 💜

It was Mark Lowry who was belting that masterpiece and he wrote it at the age of 26 in 1984 and was put to music by Buddy Green in 1991. Mark is very well known though the Gaither Vocal.

Mark is the one that introduced David Phelps to Bill Gaither to be in the Gaither Vocal Band. No one sings this song like Mark, he feels every word. David has 2 versions of this song himself. This was from a Gaither Vocal Band Reunion concert.

Dennis, I heard you comment on the pianist, Gordon Mote, wearing shades. He is blind, but yet, such an amazing pianist. I remember a joke he told about going in a whale watching tour with his wife. The company had stated in the brochure, "If no whales were seen, you could have your money refunded." Gordon says, "Well I didn't see any whales." LOL 😉

Mark Lowry is THE lead!! He wrote the song... great singer and comedian. I loved seeing him sing like other singers and nearly fell out of my seat. Great sense of humor. He tells the Catholics to tell Mary 'Hey' for the song cause he , being Baptist is not allowed to talk to Mary...... Meant to be funny of course. I am surprised you did not know Mark! But them again I am 84 years old so been around a church or two. Keep it up!! Guy Penrod is no sluff!!

Dennis, my introduction to this song and subsequent versions happened in rapid recession.
My brother inlaw sent me a recording of the song recorded by Kathie Mattea. She did a great job singing it in the spirit. At that time I didn't know Mark Lowry was the author.
One day later, I was shopping at Walmart and was looking through a selection of CD's and came across one called "REMOTELY CONTROLLED" by Mark Lowry and several other artists. Having watched several of the Gaither Homecoming Performances, I knew that Mark was a talented singer and a Christian Comedian.
Then I noticed that the last song on the CD was "MARY DID YOU KNOW". The whole CD was funny and entertaining, but near the end Mark was telling a story of what he though it might have been like for Mary to be chosen to give birth to Jesus. He then went on to say that he had written the song, lol, he explained that he couldn't read music, so he didn't actually write the music. His friend Buddy Greene, a very talented artist himself, helped him write the music. He then said that several people had recorded the song, but this was his first time performing it and recording it himself. I believe it was recorded solo on the CD, and WOW, you knew that this came from his heart and soul. It moved me to tears of joy.
I heard Mark sing it with Buddy Greene, with Guy Penrod and David Phelps several times and a host of other artists perform it since. I have to say that that first recording he did was my absolute favorite.
It is always worth listening to a song being sung by the person who wrote it.

Mark was once part of the Gaither Vocal Band, ( Bill Gaither, (bass) Mark Lowry (baritone) Guy Penrod (lead) and David Phelps (tenor) . Mark has a degree from Liberty University in Youth Ministry and a Bachelor's in Music Business.

Mark Lowry was a college student at Liberty Baptist College back in 1978 when I was there. Mark was seriously injured when their van hit a viaduct. Charles Hughes was also injured in this accident. Mark wrote a song called, "There Is Hope". Mark spent a long time in a body cast. Mark can sing wonderfully and is a great comedian. Mark wrote this song with Buddy Greene writing the music. He gave Jerry Falwell fits with his college antics. He was part if the reason the rules of the college were stricter. It was some of the highlights knowing Mark Liwry and Guy Penrod in my college days.

I raised my kids on Mark Lowry’s comedy and then along came this song by him. I’ve always loved him, the Gaither get togethers and the Gaither Bands through the years! They bring such fond memories of my kids growing up. Beautiful song! Beautiful voices! Beautiful Savior. 💕

Guy Penrod is also a great gospel singer in his own right!!!! You might want to check him out as well as the rest of the Gaither Vocal Singers/band. They have made gospel music history and are amazingly anointed by the Holy Spirit!!!! They are pretty much the only music people I listen to.. They make up a musical family!!!!
