IRIX Cine Lenses: Diamond in the Rough?

  • Another set I really enjoyed looking at during Cinegear 2024. With the 65mm IRIX Cine lens finally shipping, the set is nearly complete. I'm sure they'll add one or two longer mid-tele lenses eventually, but for now IRIX users have to make do with a big gap between 65mm and 150mm. Other than that, the uncommon focal lengths, and the lower iris blade count, these are very strong choices in the budget space. I liked them a lot.

Thank you for covering these! I’ve got the Irix 21, 30, 45 and 65. Works great with the R5c that you have (full frame, RF). I’m still getting an IronGlass Helios 44-2 though… I love my 44M-4 look a bit more (it’s more “fun”).

I think you’re in CO? If so hit me up if you want to borrow any lenses.

Just a heads up to some slightly incorrect info in this video. I use the 45mm, 150mm, 30mm, and 21mm and of those lenses the only ones with 9 Iris Blades are the 45mm, 11mm, 15mm. I cannot comment on the 11mm or 15mm because I will never order those specific lenses from the Irix set, but i can tell you that the bokeh in the other lenses are top notch and the 45mm is only slightly underperforming against the other 11 Iris Blades lenses in the bokeh department but to me, it's truly negligible.
I cannot recommend 21mm-150mm Irix lenses enough. The Irix Cine lenses are truly amazing for the price. The wider angle lenses (11mm & 15mm) they are just not as good and should be priced cheaper than the set in my opinion.

Dead on with the odd focal lengths. Always loved the look of these, but I would never own them due to the focal lengths. If I was only shooting my own content, and not professional sets, it'd be a no-brainer. But showing up to set and being unable to cover common focal lengths is like showing up without a tripod, IMHO. So... no dice.

Sorry about that! Yeah it was one whirlwind experience, and I haven’t quite nailed down my expo workflow. I think next time something like a monopod might be in order, just to help steady things up a bit.

Oh when you said I’m rushing, I thought you meant the demo shots, which I mentioned were a bit hurried and sloppy. I do want to make that better. Maybe by rushing you just meant I’m putting out a lot of Cinegear videos in quick succession, which is true :-)
      Thanks for the kind words!
