It amazes me why German navel artillery almost always came in dual gun form? With the exception of the Graf Spee, Weimar, Mainz, Scharnhorst, GK and probably a few others, but why did German not adopt the triple or quadruple gun platform for their more modern ships, like Bismarck, Tirpitz and Hipper. If other nations were packing some serious firepower with triple gun main batteries, you would think Germany would do the same. Even England and France were boasting quadruple turret designs for their BBs, with the exception of U.S.S. Florida (designed project XVI), which would've had quadruple 356 mm guns in 3 turrets. So it's puzzling why Germany stayed with the 2 gun design for just about every modern ship they built. Keep in mind, I'm not talking about destroyers, but cruisers and BBs.
As, for example, Drachinifel pointed out, the main reason was probably the Krupp gun design, which used sliding breech blocks instead of screwed breeches. Those did have the advantage of a theoretically higher rate of fire and automation (this is why the USS Des Moines Class also uses sliding breech blocks), at the cost of taking up more space in the turret.
I don't know if that's historically correct but I've heard they used 4x2 instead of 3x3 so if you lose a turret you only lose 25% of your firepower whereas you'd lose 33% with the 3x3 design
Because triple guns weighted a lot more than dual guns, making ships slower, plus the German didn't to lose a third of their firepower whenever a triple turret is incapacitated.
@@danh7411 I don't think Germany would have been that worried due to weight issues. It could be the design of the guns, it could be something else, idk.

A little explanation
For the gun itself
SK= Schnelladekanone (Fast loading canoz) Schiffskanone prior to 1920( Ship canon)
Tbts= Torpedoboots Kanone ( Torpedo boat canon)
C= Construktionsjahr ( year of construction/ design)
L= Lange (length of the gun, how many times the diameter of barrel)
For the mounting
L = Lafette (mounting)
Drh= Drehturm/ Drehscheiben (turntable mounting, or simply translated to a turret)
MPL= Mittel-Pivot-Lafette
So for Admiral Graff Spee (my favourite German ship)
28 cm SK L/52 C/28, Drh L C/28 would be; 28cm ship canon with length 52 times of it's caliber constructed in 1928 are being mounted on a turret that constructed in 1928. German is so fun, their designation is really self explanatory
