Psycho Mantis can be defeated by destroying those two statues (busts) in the room. You have to call Campbell quite a few times iirc, but you can do it even without that swap and without shooting ridiculous amount of bullets.
One item you missed is Sniper Wolf’s handkerchief that I believe Otocon gives you along with the ketchup when you’re preparing to escape the the torture rooms. If you equip it the dogs outside the commanders room won’t attack you because - per Otocon - she was nice to the dogs. Cool little nugget I only found when playing recently.
Semi-related, you can also "upgrade" a box to provide the same protection. Give Meryl some friendly fire in front of the pup, then quickly hide in the box til the pup, um, marks it.
Also in the tank battle, you can use chaff grenades to prevent them using the tank missiles instead of crawling. You can also use the grenades to take out the tracks so the tank can't drive around
Got a demo disc with this on it outta a PS mag when I was 8. Took me a long time to figure it out, but once I did It's never felt so long waiting for a game to release. I completed this when I was 8, a lot of it went over my head but I understood enough to know it was special and went back multiple times waiting for the sequel. When the leap in graphics for MGS2 released in it's 1st trailer my tiny little 11 or 12 year old brain couldn't believe what I was witnessing. It was such a a great time for gaming. That leap from ps1 to ps2 is in my opinion the greatest leap in console power. The drastic upscale in cutscenes and in-game character modelling has been the biggest jump in that tech for consoles. We'd just never witnessed anything at that level of realism before, it opened the doors for a lot of games that followed.
I watched the entire video and have to say that the editing, audio quality, and narrative structure is on par with big name UA-cam channels. Absolutely excellent content. I can’t wait to see your channel blow up.
In 1998 my brother and I played the hell out of the demo of mgs that came with our ps. It was still in Japanese. As luck would have it, my sister worked at blockbuster at the time it was released, so we made her use her free rental perks all the time so we could play it on the weekends. Never played such a thrilling game until then or since! I'm pushing 40 and still obsess over this game and happily watch two hour long videos of people talking about it lol.

Some friends from school also played it and we used to talk about it all the time. I was 12 when the game came out. Good times.
The reason why 4th wall works so well in mgs, is because Kojima was able to make the player feel like they were as much apart of the game as snake was. Kojima's 4th wall is his way of thanking us for playing, and the every single person that plays the game is appreciated. Colonel had Snake. Snake had Riden, Kojima has you. Thank you for taking the time for making this! I always love hearing different peoples takes on my favoritist game ever. You can defeat Psycho Mantis without changing the controller port. But it takes a really long time. Didn't know you should do that when i was a kid. Thanks for a great video.
Just started watching, but already subscribed. Thanks for devoting such work into a game that meant so much to me. MGS1 and 2 were a huge part of my childhood.
1:12:49 chaff grenades. I watched a documentary recently about the bloke who made glitter. Yes, the sparkly metal powder that gets stuck everywhere. It’s the same company that makes chaff for military use. Turns out it’s a real thing and it’s a special metal powder that can be released to obscure radar. I don’t think it would work in real life against cameras though. I might set up a cctv camera then air cannon launch a tonne of glitter into the air and see if I can sneak past… What I like, now I’ve learned this is the representation of chaff on the game. It’s all glittery floaty particles… Seems accurate to me!
Thank you so much for this video. It was awesome. As a side note, i had an old CRT tv when I first played MGS that had a very dark screen because it was super old. I used to use a GameShark liberally because I didn't have the fine tuned skills I do now. So when I got to the caves after mantis, my screen was almost totally black unless I played at night. This was the one section where the Night Vision Goggles came in handy. I think Kojima and team anticipated this and included them for such a purpose.
Thank you for making this video. Not only was it a top tier retrospective , but a reminder of how important MGS has been in my life as well. I was 10 when it came out and for the past 24 years it has held an important space in my heart and mind. Glad to see it impacted you in a similar way. “Find something to believe in and believe in it for yourself. when you do, pass it to the future”. Thanks again for passing this on.
Although I love Metal Gear Solid, I never fully fell in love with the franchise. It not only raised the bar, it took it to a whole new stadium. This is my first time to your channel and I love long-form documentaries/retrospectives. Real quality work, it's good that even though making the video had its challenges, you sound like you appreciated the experience.
I really did enjoy it greatly. The response has been... I can't express my gratitude. I'll just say have have MULTIPLE more in the works as I type this. Dantes Inferno, Halo, and more
I remember the feeling of accomplishment 13 year old me felt after unlocking the stealth camo. I don’t remember the task. It was either beat the entire game in under 3 hours or do a run without dying. But unlocking all those little extras was amazing. Was my favorite game for years besides the original Silent Hill which came out around that time as well.
Also pretty neat is the last few bullets in the magazine for the Famas are tracking rounds so they will automatically aim towards the enemy. If you empty your magazine down to the red rounds on the icon and put the bandana on, you have infinite tracking bullets. Very cool secret. Also, fantastic video. Loved this analysis of my favorite game of all time. I’ll always remember staying up with my big brother all night to beat this game when it first came out. It was so incredible at the time and stands as a testimony to incredible story telling via video games. We’d never seen anything like it and it consumed us.
Its crazy the emotions that come spewing out of me when I watch or play this game, no other franchise or title gives me this sense of comfort and familiarity - bliss and nostalgia like this franchise has, seeing Snake at the end of MGS4 old and nearing his final days hurt ... this man is a fictional character and yet i feel some sort of wack connection towards him, he was my hero growing up i'm 33 now and i remember playing with my friends sporting the bandana brandishing my 1911 airsoft pistol with the laser sights on the end of my gun sneaking into my friends garage pelting him with bb's yelling LIQUID!!! ... its crazy how a video game can be the catalyst to such emotions and a remembrance of a much simpler time, its like the minute you smell your mothers cooking after not having it for so long ... i can't thank Hideo and the team enough for all their hard work, i think it goes without saying but the Metal Gear franchise will live on as one of the best works of art to have ever hit the consoles ...
That was thoroughly enjoyable, great job. I like that you were kind about The Twin Snakes, most people hate on that game massively, & I love the idea that it’s Otacon’s recollection & is therefore very extra. I hope this gains the traction it deserves & I look forward to your take on Sons of Liberty. Thanks again
Ok... I'm 7 minutes into your video, and I can already tell you're an amazing communicator, I feel like you can avoid being sarcastic or cynical, and that ability helps you deliver your message with full power... It is a skill rarely employed nowadays. Congrats!
You're pretty good. You're that ninja Played this game like a damn fiddle I played the shit outta this as a kid. I still play it now. I'm playing every version. OG, integral, twin snakes. Started at 11, 33 now. Still playing and loving it
The most important game in 1998. ..! I don’t believe ps2 or Xbox would’ve been as popular without this ps1 game that changed the future of games. This game created a new imagination that was infinite for game developers. And that overflowed into the ps2/Xbox era.
I was 15 when I played it in 1998 and the music, the dialogue, the "Snake? Snake!!" when you die just blew me away. I can't describe just how immersive it was. And I had played a lot of video games in my youth. I'm 40 now and I plainly remember playing the MGS demo disc and then full release. Amazing.
Amazing video and analysis, it's really great to see such a level of indept in a youtube video. You def deserve more subs for the effort you put in these!!
Just finished it, great retrospective, missed a few minor details but overall it's important that any one of us continue telling the story that so many new generations might never discover. Thanks.
I fear the new generations wouldn't appreciate the game like those who played at release. It was so revolutionary at the time it will always hold a place in my heart, but kids these days have such an overabundance of high fidelity graphics and gameplay they won't realise just how special this was at the time
I played through this game countless times and I *never* defeated the tank boss without using chaff grenades to mess it's lock-on tech. Also, Psycho Mantis can be defeated without using controller port 2, but it takes a while as only about 1 out of every 50 attacks lands. Me and my friend defeated Mantis this way many times before we spammed the calls to everyone enough times for Campell to say about controller port. And we only did it because we wanted to hear every call possible in the game.
1:38:57 Do note, that isn't the original Gray Fox portrait on the MSX2. The one you show is the redraw done for the MGS3:Subsistence extra content port of Metal Gear 2.
I remember getting one of those demo disks from a game magazine and you could play the dock and helicopter pad sectons. I was blown away. I was 14 years old. Then my dad out of nowhere brings home Metal Gear Sold when it released. Just said i grabbed this for you. Looks like something you'll like. I then proceeded to play this game over and over. I couldn't get enough. I had been playing games since Atari. My dad had one. Then i got an NES and SNES and every other game console and Meal Gear Solid was like nothing the world had ever seen. I just couldn't believe this game. Now Switch is bringing it back and i can't wait to play through it again. Then Snake Eater which is just incredible.
Just watching this now and there are a few secret techniques for a few boss battles: 1. During Ocelot's fight, you can go into first person and use R1 and L1 to dodge Ocelot's bullets. 2. During the Tank Battle you can use chaff grenades to stop the tank from firing and to expose the gunman. 3. For Sniper Wolf's second battle, you can actually just go to that rock formation on the bottom right and just spam Nikita Missiles at her. Played this game since I was like 8. Even now I still discover things. Like using the cardboard box in trucks to go to different areas of the base. This game is a masterpiece.
The Metal Gear series gets criticized for feeling like a movie when it should have been made to feel like a game. And it's blamed for the bad trend of so many other games being made more to feel like mediocre movies instead of good games. But all of this is wrong. It actually felt like a great game with a unique and special cinematic experience weaved into it that truly enhanced the gameplay itself. The story made all the gameplay and objectives feel meaningful, and that was an unforgettable motivation for playing the game all the way through.
I was there in 1998 when this game dropped. To this day, it’s remained my favorite game of all time. Even thou the gameplay is dated by modern standards, I feel like that is also part of it’s charm. The over the head view point. The blocky graphics. The constricting control scheme. It doesn’t matter. The heart and soul of this game has remained to this day. The story. The voice acting. The music. The characters. The cutscenes. All of it just felt so ahead of it’s time and felt like EVERYONE gave it their A+ effort. I play this game once a year on my PS2 because of the impact this game made on me. I bought a copy of Sons of Liberty, before I had a PS2, because I HAD to know what happened next. Rumors of a remake have come and gone, if a proper one from the ground up happens, then I say bring it on. If not, then I worry not. For I was there to experience a game that defines a genre to this very day and I can’t thank Kojima enough for bringing this game to the masses. Thank You for this video. I’m so glad to know that there are people out there who truly care about this game as I do.
This was a really good retrospective. Its thesis is well-explained and restated without wearing thin. The structure is really good and I agree with the other commentors who called you a good communicator. I will give a small point of criticism which is more encouragement than anything else - being Dutch, I watched this with the subtitles on. Many times they refer to you *inserting a cutaway*, which you never really go through with. The only time you really did was with the Big Chungus meme. My feedback: Go through with them! Almost all of them would have landed really well in my opinion, either as jokes or as support for the statement you make at the time. Based on your homepage it seems like this was your oldest video so maybe you've gotten more faith in your writing/editing since, but I would definitely recommend dialing up those moments of levity or reference. Regardless of that minor point, definitely an enjoyable video the whole way through. You have a new subscriber, hoping to see more MGS retrospectives one day. Kudos :)
*CONTEXT* is exactly I've been championing for years now. It's a pivotal factor to embed in your line of thinking to enable a broader understanding. And understanding is exactly what the world still is lacking in 2023. Sometimes I get mad at how we seem to regress. It almost makes me feel ashamed of being a human.
For the Vulcan Raven tank battle you can use a chaff grenade to temporally disable the tank turret, allowing you to run straight towards it, only having to dodge the machine gun fire. You can also use the mines you just picked or some c4 to blow out the tanks treads which slows its movement and rotation speed, allowing you to out maneuver it and throw your grenades right into the gunners seat. If you do this successfully the grenade takes much more damage off the boss.
Fun fact. When you see the puppy immediately equip the box. It will piss on it then you can run through the caves without being attacked by wolves because of the puppy scent
I got a PS1 for Christmas amd along with it i received Final Fantasy 7, Resident Evil 2 and Metal Gear Solid. What a time to be alive! MGS will always hold a special place in my heart and this Masterpiece deserves a Remake. This game was way ahead of its time and till this day MGS is a one of a kind Masterpiece.
Thank you for this wonderful nostalgia trip. One of the all time greatest games. I'd love to see it get a remake one day, to the standard of the Resident Evil remakes.
One quite important thing, Metal Gear (1987) was not the first stealth game, that one goes to Manbiki Shounen from 1979. Even Castle Wolfenstein from 1981 and Beyond Castle Wolfenstein from 1984 predate Metal Gear - and those two use searching bodies for ammo or using an enemy uniform as a disguise that are used to this day in games.
1:22:41 Salad snake carries on the Boss's legacy. Big boss was personally incapable of doing any of that after he killed the boss. Snake on the other hand carries the torch. I don't know the technicalities and I haven't played these games in over 10 years... My memory is faded, I just believe what I believe I suppose and I'm more than willing to be proven wrong but I'm not prepared to debate in any way.
As an avid metal gear fan... well done. There are a few things I would like to point out. 1. The second fight with sniper wolf is far easier with the nikita. 2. The claymore is your friend during the tower chase and the raven fight. During the tower chase set it behind you, run until you hear a boom, then set another one. They will never be able to catch you from behind. 3. If you punch meryl where the wolves are, she will whistle them over to attack you. However if you hide in the box before she whistles, they will come and pee on the box. The box will then have the scent of the wolves allowing you to use the box to get through the area unharmed. 4. There is a way to destroy mantis from port 1. Destroy the statues with the covered faces first. This will disrupt mantis psychic field. Lastly... there is another theory around twin snakes that I like better. Every metal gear game is over the top with the next getting more over the top than the last. If anything, solid is practically the most plausible... so the over the top nature of twin snakes isn't unthinkable. So, what if, instead of twin snake being the imagination of Otacon, twin snake is the true events and the original is the VR training mission that Raiden went through?
@evprince if you are into the theory game... ive got a theory (would require a retcon... which metal gear is also known for) that would tie up all the loose ends left in the phantom pain.
I did it as a kid to find out what he says if you beat him without the swap...he dont say anything different, he still accuses you of swapping controllers.
You should rewatch the cutscenes via twin snakes, particularly for the psycho mantis cutscenes. He's the only character whose voice actor actually reprises his role truly faithfully in the twin snakes game. Also, I really love The cutscenes with him along with Gray Fox. The only characters who truly had the best moments. Even if Gray Fox was still recast as a white dude which no one pays attention do you like I said in the previous comment
Ocelot never says Liquid got the dominant genes. He said Liquid wasn't the inferior one. The superior genes probably were recessive. If the superior genes were the dominant genes, there would be a whole lot more Big Boss caliber soldiers running around.
1:38:38 Seriously, look up the original face of gray fox via the original MSX game. You know back when snake looked like Mel Gibson and Big Boss look like Sean Connery. You'll see what code Gmail was originally getting you'll see what kojima was originally getting at, but for some reason that character got whitewashed and I never understood why. Something that I never hear anyone bring up.
I too was 8 years old when I played this game and it was the first game I beat. I agree this game had an effect on my life by giving my youthful brain a legendary story and unforgettable experience
You know what's crazy? In your introduction you mentioned getting it as a gift from your older sisters boyfriend... I remember playing MGS specifically because my Uncle and his sisters husband (whom were obviously much older than I at the time...) I was about 7 or 8 as well when I played it too I think.. But they handed me the game as well because they had trouble beating some parts on it as well. That's where my story started with MGS too. I feel like it was harder for that gaming generation I suppose but that's where we came in >:D
Another excellent retrospective. 👍👍👍 Thia game, and the 1st Resident Evil, was the first time i ever felt true ominous suspense and genuine satisfaction in beating a game. So difficult, yet so addicting. Wonder if Ninja Gaiden is something you'd be interested to do a retrospective on? I always found its plot and gameplay to be intriguing as well

I don’t think it would work in real life against cameras though. I might set up a cctv camera then air cannon launch a tonne of glitter into the air and see if I can sneak past…
What I like, now I’ve learned this is the representation of chaff on the game. It’s all glittery floaty particles… Seems accurate to me!
You're pretty good. But seriously, so glad I watched that Starfield collab you did with Jwlar. I've been enjoying your Star Wars content, too.
Stick around, tons more to come.
Played MGS1 in 2014 and was blown away by a game that came out in 1998. It's one of only two games I consider a 10/10 a true masterpiece
What's the other?
Dantes Inferno, Halo, and more
Excellent overview! Your memories of this were great to hear and resonated with my own.
To unlock the stealth you had to submit to the torture and have the otacon ending. The Meryl ending gives you the unlimited ammo bandana.
No idea how or why. But I'm glad I got recommended this video
A very well done analysis, i was looking for a video like this after i finished the game yesterday on my remaster collection.
Love watching these in-depth retrospectives. Excited to see what you can do with MGS2
Me too actually!
Begins writing at 10k subs!
I used stinger missiles against sniper wolf in the snow field. Battle was over in no time.
Otacon used his Stinger Missile, too
Ok... I'm 7 minutes into your video, and I can already tell you're an amazing communicator, I feel like you can avoid being sarcastic or cynical, and that ability helps you deliver your message with full power... It is a skill rarely employed nowadays. Congrats!
this is stilly my favorite game ever made for how it opened up my eyes to what is possible to do in a video game.
You're pretty good.
You're that ninja
Played this game like a damn fiddle
I played the shit outta this as a kid. I still play it now. I'm playing every version. OG, integral, twin snakes.
Started at 11, 33 now. Still playing and loving it
Fantastic video! I've always said MGS felt like playing Die Hard, it was phenomenal when it came out.
As long as you keep making MGS videos like this I'll keep watching them.
Much appreciated!
if it werent for mgs1 i wouldnt be a gamer and the day that i met david hayter i couldnt believe it. great video btw
This video is incredible. You did an amazing job.
Just finished it, great retrospective, missed a few minor details but overall it's important that any one of us continue telling the story that so many new generations might never discover. Thanks.
I fear the new generations wouldn't appreciate the game like those who played at release. It was so revolutionary at the time it will always hold a place in my heart, but kids these days have such an overabundance of high fidelity graphics and gameplay they won't realise just how special this was at the time
41:51 in retrospect so funny that Meryl says "Pretty good, huh" 😂😂❤❤
I played through this game countless times and I *never* defeated the tank boss without using chaff grenades to mess it's lock-on tech.
Also, Psycho Mantis can be defeated without using controller port 2, but it takes a while as only about 1 out of every 50 attacks lands. Me and my friend defeated Mantis this way many times before we spammed the calls to everyone enough times for Campell to say about controller port. And we only did it because we wanted to hear every call possible in the game.
Yeah that's a solid snake start.
1:38:57 Do note, that isn't the original Gray Fox portrait on the MSX2. The one you show is the redraw done for the MGS3:Subsistence extra content port of Metal Gear 2.
Oh damn, thanks for sharing that I didn't even realize!
The Twin Snakes theory really gives a new and much more interesting meaning to the game! Great video btw
amazing vid loved it u def nailed it
This piece is amazing. Shared it on multiple social groups about this game. I'd love it if you also did the other games in the series ❤😊
Just watching this now and there are a few secret techniques for a few boss battles:
I couldn't accept snake without Hayters voice in MGS 5. Hayters was also great in the Guyver live action movies.
Great video, excited to go through your other work 💪
Great video dude 👍 keep up the good work
Great video. Find it funny that I want to make a MGS like stop motion with legos and he used legos to map out the levels, poetic.
More retrospectives please I love watching these
More coming I love doing them
@@evprince I love watching them!!! You def have the voice for it ❤️ I usually put these on to fall asleep to
I was there in 1998 when this game dropped.

You might say, Snake has an … Arsenal Gear ? I’ll go away now.
Never thought I'd see a metal gear solid retrospective voiced by Ferris Bueller
I take that as a compliment.
I’m so glad I found this channel.
Amazing video dude, would love to see a retrospective on MGS2. Keep at it.
At 10k subs!
Solid retrospective of one of the greatest games ever made.
Hey bud, im really digging your content. Thank you
This was fantastic. Bravo! 👏
I'm replaying METAL GEAR SOLID RIGHT NOW
Fun fact. When you see the puppy immediately equip the box. It will piss on it then you can run through the caves without being attacked by wolves because of the puppy scent
Awesome video dude
I got a PS1 for Christmas amd along with it i received Final Fantasy 7, Resident Evil 2 and Metal Gear Solid. What a time to be alive! MGS will always hold a special place in my heart and this Masterpiece deserves a Remake. This game was way ahead of its time and till this day MGS is a one of a kind Masterpiece.
Thank you for this wonderful nostalgia trip. One of the all time greatest games. I'd love to see it get a remake one day, to the standard of the Resident Evil remakes.
F*ck that. It'd become woke like the REmakes.
Don't need diazapam , you can spam menu to freeze time and land aa hit as soon as your cross hair is right on target. Spam fire button out of menu

Salad snake carries on the Boss's legacy.
Would you recommend an emulator or the master collection for someone who's never played it before?
I have not played the master collection but I imagine it's probably an easier method.
Fun things to add. You can use chaff to blind rex during the radar phase.
I didnt know you could hide under rex during the second half though!
High Quality MGS content. You got my Sub. Well done Boss!
"There can only ever be one Boss" Ocelot.
@@evprince "I am Big Boss and you are too. No he's the two of us together." BB
@@andrewnelson2801 "From here on out... you're Big Boss."
Great clip.. hope u make more
He created the best movie ever in game. Probably the greatest work of art ever.
I think it could be the 1st game to give such a story/movie driven experience. It can't be understated the impact this game has had on gaming.
Oh love this extra info. As for that last theory it's hilarious to think that's the real events.
@evprince if you are into the theory game... ive got a theory (would require a retcon... which metal gear is also known for) that would tie up all the loose ends left in the phantom pain.
The fight against Psycho Mantis is possible without swapping controllers, but im sure you need Infinite Ammo bandana.
I did it as a kid to find out what he says if you beat him without the swap...he dont say anything different, he still accuses you of swapping controllers.
SONS OF LIBERTY PLEEEEEEEEEEASE YES YES YES!!!
Who ever voice liquid about big chungus is a perfect match
ua-cam.com/video/srTqxL_6Ysg/v-deo.html&ab_channel=TomSchalk
FakeYou ladies and Gentlemen.
Ocelot never says Liquid got the dominant genes. He said Liquid wasn't the inferior one. The superior genes probably were recessive. If the superior genes were the dominant genes, there would be a whole lot more Big Boss caliber soldiers running around.
1:38:38
Seriously, look up the original face of gray fox via the original MSX game.
The Last Of Us is the only game that came close to giving me this same feeling when I was 8
You know what's crazy? In your introduction you mentioned getting it as a gift from your older sisters boyfriend... I remember playing MGS specifically because my Uncle and his sisters husband (whom were obviously much older than I at the time...) I was about 7 or 8 as well when I played it too I think.. But they handed me the game as well because they had trouble beating some parts on it as well. That's where my story started with MGS too. I feel like it was harder for that gaming generation I suppose but that's where we came in >:D
Koh-jim-uh? You mean "Koh-Gee-muh". This video is top tier either way.
Another excellent retrospective. 👍👍👍
Thia game, and the 1st Resident Evil, was the first time i ever felt true ominous suspense and genuine satisfaction in beating a game. So difficult, yet so addicting.
Wonder if Ninja Gaiden is something you'd be interested to do a retrospective on? I always found its plot and gameplay to be intriguing as well
I know so little about Ninja Gaiden... but it's 100% something I'm interested in doing something on now.
A match made in Outer Heaven...I see what you did there. Nice video!
The only boss you encounter more than twice is Otacon: you have to resist giving him a swirlie on every encounter.
