The more you listen to Sir Alex's players talking about football, the more of a genius he looks like
Yes a real Einstein

Glorious projection there.
I dunno what it is, but every time I listen to Rio, I feel I could listen to him forever. Really good guest
best edition so far. Rio is a natural
As a Swiss I have to say this was awesome. Spain will be tough, but I strongly believe that the longer the game goes on, the chance to win will increase for England. Also very important... England's bench is stronger than Spains. So my neutral tip will be 1:1 after 90 and the winning goal by Cole Palmer in extension. It's written in the stars...😉🤣🤣
I agree, if we can just survive the initial relentless attacks our chances will go up. I'm confident if it goes to penalties, and as an England fan it is astounding to even say such a thing, but this team is different now
@@royalhero4608 Yeah if after 70 mins Watkins comes on Spain will be terrified
Good point - but also think reason we looked better against the Swiss in parts ( mainly subs ect )
And then the Dutch for first 35min - reasons why was they came at us , so we have space and no low blocks, that’s my hood with Spain 🇪🇸- the space will be better for the type of players we have , 50/50 thou 😕🔥 come on England 🏴 🔥🔥🔥🤩
Extension time? Very Swiss 😅
My tip Southgate will sh*t his pants and England will win it the Real Madrid way. 🚍
"We didn't have someone like Garath that could knit us together".... what a genuinely powerful and profound statement. For all his criticism, he has shown he can slowly develop a team and use the strength of his bench (albeit a bit too late into games).

Deserves credit for the substitutions he has made (Gareth)? He only made the substitutions when they were in a desperate situation. I think Rio has been sniffing some stuff.

That “golden generation” really were petty and pathetic when it came to club rivalries. What a waste of a potentially great England team.
No one mentions the obvious with that group of players. Lack of pace, skill, flair. Which is necessary to break down teams in international football.
Agreed. They don’t deserve the golden generation tag. Put club before country 🧐
@@DhandleyTheHistory of DA England.
Club over country any day how it should be
Sad thing is a lot of them players in folders generation came from West Ham academy and should have all got along , carrick Rio joey cole Defoe Lampar Johnson and john terry was there also as a kid before going Chelsea
People focus a lot, when criticising Gareth Southgate, on his in-game decision making. And whatever the validity of that criticism might or might not be, Gareth has been able to cultivate a great national team culture within a diverse group of English players and this has clearly helped him achieve greater success than anyone before him.
So, whatever negative feelings some may have about Gareth Southgate, everyone should recognise that the success that England have had in tournament football under Southgate's leadership cannot be denied.
Good luck doesn't happen tournament after tournament. How England have got to another final has happened because both England starters and substitutes alike share the same beliefs and ideals. And fostering such an exceptional team culture where there was none before is credit to the manager and his staff including all the players too. Really proud of all those involved.
Now come on England! Give Spain a good fight tomorrow! 🏴 ⚽ 🇬🇧
Love this comment ❤ I'm not reading any others after this one as want to keep on a positive note!! Let's go England!! 🏴
Pure luck. Easy run to this point and the play was diabolical. They haven't got a hope in hell tomorrow, and I actually want Spain to win. At least they deserve it. England are shite and they always will be until they change the attitude and get a proper manager in.
He’s got to the final by pure fluke again
@@LukeSkywalker-io2bh You do you Luke well done for your educated take. You ain't a real fan anyway your not needed. I'm sure there's a Hollyoaks omnibus you can watch instead 🤣🤣
Absolutely correct. The recent criticism highlights entitlement in the English fans, and constantly taking things for granted, which is typical.
They will always fail to understand the underlying work and fundamentals, often instead succumbing to tunnel vision on "game management" and "substitutions" - These are things you literally can't use effectively without the togetherness, belief and game-ready mentality from the entire squad.
I like Rio's honesty about his generation....
Yeah but he’s got a point , we were good but there were some truly outstanding international teams. France, Brazil, Holland , Germany , they were chock full of world class players . It was the golden age of football that period from around 96 for 10 years was something else
@@issyjas3309 yes.... But his point is still valid and most pertinent.... England were never a team, therefore they couldn't compete... And that was the real issue.... All those team were competitive against each other... You can't control the players another team have but you could control your team harmony. To talk about others teams would be a cop out, I'm glad he didn't do that...
England had the players to compete but couldn't because they were never a TEAM... And was more the issue than the players the other teams had.

@@andrekb37 @issyjas3309 The sheer amount of issues, no matter how slight, must be an overarching problem. You can make up for 1 or 2 short-comings, but it's impossible to make up for 4 or 5.
What Rio descirbes in the beginning, is maybe one huge reason, why some great generations of english football players never won anything. And we (Germany) won a lot. Out national teams often were known for great team chemistry, despite the rivalries of clubs in the Bundesliga.
We often had strong "clusters" of Bayern, Dortmund, Hamburg or Mönchen-Gladbach players, but they were able to connect and build friendships when spending time with the national team.
Whatever you say about Southgates way of football (me: atrocious!), he has formed a strong, resilient groupe. Who believes at every second of a game, that they can still turn things around and win the game. Spain plays way better football. But England has the heart to win it this time finally.
Go Enland!
Also Germany were always a team that knew how to win important games no matter how they were playing. A lot of this came down to having the right mentality, also I think they were very unlucky against Spain this year and had some good chances.
Only 3 of your starting 11 from 2014 didn’t play for Bayern, hardly a similar situation.
@@MormanNinjayou realise they have won 4 world cups and 3 euro's... not just 2014 melt. His point is right.
Spain doesn't have heart? Are we not passionate?
The Beckham hate was horrendous. I know what he’s saying about the rivalry between clubs at that time hindered the England team. Even us as fans at his era. I remember being at an event somewhere when I was as still in primary school I got called on to the stage not long after Beckham was sent of against Argentina. I was asked what I thought if it and I said “I don’t like him As I’m an Arsenal fan and he plays for Man United”. Obviously I completely admire and love Beckham now but i do agree in that period of time the rivalry between fans ruined the England’s team chances.
And look what Hoddle did to Beckham, completely unforgiveable. And I don't care for Beckham either, but no manager should do/say what he did, and any lesser person could have been ruined.
Beckham was like petulant child with that kick to Simone . He deserved stick we could won that tournament

@@The_Rizz_Lord_ you and most of the country mate but we learn from our mistakes.
Non Premier League team fan, so looking from the outside it seems team bias comes into play when Prem fans talk about England team selection. Some folk can then switch that off and get behind players they usually don't like, some find it more difficult.
If/when something goes wrong, the bias and possible hate comes back out in the form of the blame that we've seen.
Not immune from this sort of BS myself. When England have got knocked out in previous tournaments, I can disassociate myself by thinking we get the Prem shoved down our throats and told how wonderful it is, but the only time I care about these players they're bloody useless!
I feel like too many people overlooking how good Fabian Ruiz has been. Yes, i think Rodri should get player of the tournament but then it's Ruiz/Yamal
I think all the hate has been aimed at Southgate and obviously taking some of the pressure off the squad. It will be interesting to see after the final win or lose if Southgate leaves. Who will take it on. People shit on him but the man has got England consistently into the later stages of a tournament. People forget the chaos before him and all the hurt.
I really don’t get the dislike towards Gareth. There was a time when no English manager was good enough for the English team. No finals showing since 66 and he’s a loser? Sir Bobby (RIP) was knighted for getting his team into the semis! What a world.
Mainoo is surreal. Not hyping him..he is literally showing his football I.Q..his off ball movement and involvement all over the pitch. Man u need to build around him..I'm talking in 3 seasons time mainoo will be top 5 In the world

He is just a young version of Thomas Partey, remember when burst onto the scene he was the same. Ofcourse not on his level yet but he will get there probably surpass him if he does not get complacent. Great pod lads. The issue of a lack of No9's in English football, and maybe even European football is due to the influence (and greatness over a long period of time) of Messi and Ronaldo. Clubs, fans, academy's, and even the media all prioritise that type of player - attacking forwards / wings who can get you 25+ goals a season - and every young player and kid wants to be Mbappe, Vini Jr, Bellingham, Lamal.
That was fun, enjoyed v.much, pre final weekend buzz is on!

3 Legends great to see Rio on the channel “”COME ON ENGLAND” Please lift that damn cup. 2-1 to the three lions
_This_ is why I think people who think Southgate is a bad manager/not good enough for England don't know what they're talking about. The underpinning reason England have done so well recently isn't just because the players are improved over older generations (and you could argue, in some ways, many are not), it's a blend of technically gifted players and a manager who knows how to help them form a _team!_ None of our previous managers in the last 20-30 years managed it to the same level GS has. This is something that we may go on to miss when he leaves, mark my words. And I guarantee that his history as a player is a big part of that. You don't necessarily get that with a big name star manager. GS has elevated England and I just roll my eyes whenever I hear someone saying he needs to go. He's the best manager for England in my lifetime (which started with Bobby Robson who, along with Venables, did pretty well with a decent group of players but nothing close to what GS has achieved; sustained later stage tournament performance over 8 years, including _two_ finals!). Yes, the technical ability of English players has improved. The funny thing is, what most people still forget is that Southgate has been involved heavily in _that_ project as well! He deserves success and I hope he achieves it tomorrow. And we will miss him when he's gone.
Thank you, I've spent years defending him and you put it so well. It might be because I have coached a team for a few years, it made me appreciate what managers may go through
If you look at past managers for England they normally get to the Quarter finals and Semi’s on the odd occasion so its nothing new. he has gone 1 step further but still hasnt won anything or got their by beating the TOP Teams. Sunday will show you what he is really made of and eont be surprised if we get walloped as i wont be.
Southgate’s experiment have failed
- Trent in the midfield
- Gallagher coming in instead of Mainoo
- Trippier on the left
- Foden on the left
- Leaving Watkins on the bench
All of these things were apparent to “fans” and England only made progress when these failings were stopped
@@EmuGamesMaster Then the issue isn't the manager...the players just aren't as good or better than the top nations
@@bushidobrown6742 You say all this but fans can't even agree universally on the starting line up everyone has a better idea.
Rio admitting that the Golden Generation wasn't so golden was honest. Great players, no team. The manager should also spot divisions within the camp and quell them imo. But, this England seems more united than ever before and that for me is why they have a chance.

PS Rio really knows his shit
What a great watch, fascinating to hear Rio talk about the Golden Generation and how club rivalry got in the way.
Rio really puts a spotlight as to why the "golden generation ⭐" failed to deliver. Regardless of what many might think about Southgate's tactics, the fact that he has actually developed a team/squad mentality, is the reason for their progress in tournaments. Players win you games but a TEAM wins you trophies 🏆
Southgate has also been fortunate with the draws. Just look at his record against the top teams, he has failed time and time again when he plays the better teams.
It's very easy to argue that he has achieved the bare minimum considering the talent available.
I personally think that if England get a top coach you'll win the next world cup or euros, someone like Klopp for example would be far more likely to win a trophy than Southgate.
@@davidkelly790 - people try to rightly or wrongly, discredit Southgate because of the "lucky" routes to the final. What most seem to forget is that past English managers also lost to the "elite" nations in tournaments but ALSO lost to teams like Iceland, didn't get out the group or even qualify for the tournament. Southgate made England into a tournament team and this is why, despite the play style, he had a good tournament record because he copied the Didier Deschamps playbook 📖 Even though I think England need to go in a new direction, it's mainly because Southgate feels he's given it his all. I do think it's ridiculous people are discrediting what he has achieved when more talented England teams didn't do better. Only one team can win and Spain, before 2008 were like England in not winning tournaments despite their player ability.
It's not impossible for England to get Klopp but I doubt it because he left Liverpool BECAUSE of the pressure toll it took on him. So if Klopp is out, what other top manager is there that wants the job and will win England a trophy? That's now the expectation for England as this is the level that Southgate has set. Southgate is not an elite manager in terms of managing matches at the trophy winning stage, but he is at everything else in terms of progressing through a tournament, getting the team to want to play for England and getting the fans to believe in the team again.
I'm Scottish so I don't support England but what Southgate has done is incredible because for the first time in my lifetime (I'm almost 41) I thought England would actually win an international tournament!
What England need now is to play as a team (rather than as individuals) and have an ENGLAND way of playing/identity so when England players get together, they know what they are meant to do on the field. As I said in my initial comment, "a TEAM" wins you trophies and England have never, in modern history had the best TEAM in terms of cohesion and play style.
@@doubleophysiquecreation1525 One manager lost to Iceland. England have, in the main, been knocked out by top teams.
It's a combination of fortunate draws and the consistency in beating teams that you have better players than. It's not much deeper than that. It's not Southagtes fault that he's been drawn against poorer sides. The comparison to Deschamps is an interesting one, his teams played free flowing football until recently where he has moved far more defensively (or "controlled" as a lot of people refer to it). It's a trend in football really which has made the vast majority of top level football really boring to watch in my opinion. The difference is that Deschamps achieved more and actually won a trophy of course.
I'm not discrediting Southgate, I credited him for having a team that consistently perform. But the same applies on the other side that because he beats the teams that they should beat that he is a great manager, the truth is that he is an alright manager who has benefitted from fortunate circumstances. Some of the hate that he gets it's crazy but some of the praise that he gets it's way over the top. I'd say it's a 7 out of 10 in terms of his performance.
I'm scottish as well btw. We have similar with Clarke where we play boring football, as Clarke is risk averse. It's worked to a degree as we have qualified for two tournaments when we hadn't done that since 1998. But then we have been humiliated when we got there without having the guts to play on the front foot. Many fans, myself included, want him replaced as we feel that we should look to push on to achieve better as negative football can take you so far and attacking football wins out more times than not (not always, but usually). There are parallels between the two just with different levels of talent / aspiration involved.
Come on England.

Agree Southgate has to be brave and go for it in the second half. If they’re still in it, with 30 minutes left, I’d put on Palmer and Watkins.
Battle of attrition fr
Keep dreaming.
I flipping love this podcast! Absolute perfection! Keep up the good work!
Always educational and a good listen!
I've always said this about that England Golden generation side. It's not that they weren't good enough, but they also had to compete against every other teams golden generation teams. France, Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain , Netherlands , were all loaded too
If all those countries are "golden", the term is pretty meaningless? They can all be elite, certainly, and I don't know the coverage in those countries, but "golden" here is an adjective England gave itself. That's the problem.
@@somethingcleverhere golden in the text simply means if you look un almost every position there is a world class talent , star studded team, and this era of football had that in almost all these teams . Bro Messi was 19/20 coming off the bench for Argentina in 2006 lol. Same for Kaka in 2002 for Brazil , England would debate whether to start Gerrad and Lampard together lol
Enjoyed this, think Rio is always honest and gives great insight.
Shame he isn’t the same to his wife
@@StephenCarrIsBald Gossip in the politically incorrect dictionary online is defined as: ''trash talk, based on hearsay, often spread by men raised too long around women...''
Great to get an insight of the Golden Generations downfalls.
Such a shame they didn’t gel as we all thought they could go on and win something.
We knew Capello’s wasn’t a happy camp.
Sven for me wasn’t brave enough and Rio confirms that with withholding his forward drive.
Come on England Sunday 14th, bring it home 🏴
Great content and interesting to here about England teams in past. I think the team now have only one problem on Sunday which is the pressure of country willing them to win. If I could say one thing too the England team is give 100% and leave nothing out there and if you lose ,at least you tried and you can have no regrets.and as a fan I cannot ask more of you and will be proud of you regardless of the result. Good luck lads.😊
Foden has been poor, how Rio can name him is nonsence. Foden is a flat track bully...works around the box for Citeh but disappears in the big games without the ball.
Cole palmer is underrated! He needs to play in the final to counter luiz and Rhodri to keep them occupied.
By whom? I only say praise universally
If anything he's overated now.
Luiz is brazilian and Rhodri is Welsh ?
This is the best podcast for the Euros! Going to miss it once the tournament is over!
Always great to hear what Rio has to say. Good stuff.
Love this show but not the same without micha
Don’t agree
Better
Much better without micah
🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 the guy is funny as fuck
Micah is ok but I prefer Rio, as he brings a lot of knowledge to the pod, not just laughing all the time.
I really hope Spain wraps it up in 90 minutes, wins it cleanly 2-3:0. They deserve to win it by the way they are playing, amazing football.
Deserve has got nothing to do with it. It’s 90 minutes with both teams gathering momentum, of course I think Spain are the favourites, I am predicting 2-1 or 3-1, but if England ride their luck, they could take it to extra time at least.
so much love for rio, great episode boys
this is my fav football podcast, love the analysis honesty and how laid back it is
Ah yes, Rio. Notoriously great in finals.
If the Kane curse can make Bayern not win the title, there's no chance England will win. The most England thing ever would be losing the final with him getting the golden boot
England scores 2 with Kane early and still lose 2-3 due to shit defense, Kane wins golden boot and England loses.
Spain have been the best team in the tournament 🤷
Why did the golden generation fail then? Kane wasnt even in the squad, who was the curse then?
@@randomdaveUKSpain had a lower xG against Germany and France they conceded lots of chances against both. This notion that Spain are this unbeatable team is false. They are favourites but they aren't the Spain from 2010
@@NellyGandhella well yes that Spanish era was dominant. We don't really have a dominant team at the moment which is better for football I think
The only hard team English have faced in the tournament
Pathetic nonsense
@@kippsguitar6539 yes they are.
@@jzilla1234 no they're not,
Love it’s boys! Great insights from Rio.
I love the way Alan started “ I THOUGHT IT WAS LIT” love the slang mate
How fitting. All 3 podfathers are the best players in their position in their era in the country !!!
Let's not give Gareth undue credit. We played poorly within the Group Stages. We were lucky to finish top of the Group and get the easy side of the draw. We played poorly again against Slovakia and were just one minute away from exit when Bellingham saved us. It was an improved performance against the Swiss, however we won the lottery of penalties. It was our first good performance against the Nederlands. So far, one good performance in six has gotten England to the final. Yes, we have been resilient. We have also been very very lucky, especially with that pen against the Dutch.
The harder I work the luckier I get. Same applies.
Micsh sorry but this show was brilliant Rio is so good with the football world n hw he analize each player ,club,n even at country level wow it was a breath taking reasoning jus to listen to 3 men have a proper tlk
I agree all the stuffs they said but remember England doesn't play against any good teams that has potential to win Euro . So they have bit of luck and improved a lot . Gareth is very good in terms of man management. But do you see that in the first XI , doesn't have a serious setpiece taker even though we have the best of this segment trent.Set pieces are very clinical those days ..this is my biggest concern.
¡Lineker fuer un genio cuando jugaba al futbol y es un genio como comentarista /analista de futbol!
It’s common knowledge some Man Utd players didn’t talk to each other so to use excuse to cliches in England during ‘golden generation’ shows it was nothing to do with that
Difference is man united still won lots of trophies
To be fair to Yamal, he did not bring the ninja turtle mask with him. It was handed to him by a fan or a media member, who was probably part of the entourage. And then the other guy opted to take it away from Yamal. It would have been an epic moment though had it materialized. 😂
Spain 🇪🇸 well deserved winners throughout this tournament 🏆
England's bench is *insanely* talented. A 10 year old could make the subs and watch them be successful. It's crazy he's getting credit for Bellingham's brilliance, for a penalty shoot-out, a lucky pen. He has a brilliant squad and has _undoubtebly_ been lucky
Whose here after the match rio Ferdinand jokes 😭😂😂 bottle jobs
Really insightful commentary on the England/media relationship. These guys have turned into really excellent broadcasters.
Great chat, lads! 👏👏
