But look at the things surrounding those past managers. The difficulty of the groups, the routes to finals and the strength of the opposition. In the 20+ years prior to Southgate. Look at Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Portugal, Netherlands. Then compared to now, they're shells of their former selves we have a far better squad on paper than all those teams with the exception of France. In the 25 years Prior to Southgate 7 or those 8 teams won a international trophy.

Southgate will never get the credit, no matter what happens. Because people are too fixed on their opinions of him. But getting to 2 finals in a row and semifinal out of four tournaments when your country hasn’t been in a semi-final for over two decades is a crazy level of consistency. Any other international team in the world, apart from two or three would crave that kind of consistency. England fans just need to enjoy this. They are in a privileged position.

He won't get credit because it's not really deserved. When it comes to achievements context matters. If you want to compare him to past managers and their performances fine. But look at the things surrounding those past managers. The difficulty of the groups, the routes to finals and the strength of the opposition. In the 20+ years prior to Southgate. Look at Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Portugal, Netherlands. Then compared to now, they're shells of their former selves we have a far better squad on paper than all those teams with the exception of France. In the 25 years Prior to Southgate 7 or those 8 teams won a international trophy.

You clearly weren‘t around when the likes of Kevin Keegan, Roy Hodgson and Fabio Capello - both far more experienced managers than Southgate at that time - went out early with squads that were considered superior to the current one. Southgate‘s accomplishments with England will become clearer once he leaves.
