There are singular moments in the course of time that were destined to come but once and only once. This is one of those moments. Imagine being in the audience witnessing these legends interact in real time. I'm willing to bet that you'd never see anything like it ever again in your lifetime.
What Frank Sinatra said about Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell dancing "Begin The Beguine" can be said about this snippet: "You know, you can wait around and hope. But you'll never see the likes of this ever again." And today's teenagers' grandchildren will hopefully be watching this, and laughing along too.
In interviews Lucy has said when she first started out in the business, she wanted to be a part of vaudeville but she didn't realize vaudeville was dead by the time she began in the business.
He continued to perform until the end of his life. His doctor tokd him to slow down and enjoy retirement, but he got bored. He loved performing. He talks about it at the end of his autobiography, which was only a year or so before he died.
My favorite episode of I Love Lucy. I am teary watching this, for the memories it brought, knowing they are now gone and the enjoyment Harpo, Lucy and their partners brought. This is priceless!
Incredible performer, and a natural genius. The Marx Brothers were so ahead of their time, and All naturally gifted. Harpo was my favourite out of the Marx Brothers, and could watch their films on loop. Total respect to them. RIP Groucho Chico Harpo and Zeppo.🙏✊
Still makes you winder how witty Zeppo was if he was even wittier than Groucho? He reportedly could spot for any of his elder brothers and was absolutely magnificent straight man. Three masters of their own style and one mimicking them all and keeping straight face.
Notice that Harpo's eyes widen a bit after Lucy does the hand clap in the exact same off-way he does at 1:47. The "oh, she's good" feeling on his face is perfect.
Lucy was crazy as hell as far as physical comedy she was one of the funniest comedians ever. And I love all that wild stuff that Harpo and his brothers used do. People might think that it's corny but we need comedy like this nowadays. Maybe people will calm down a little bit.
paul best In a interview, Lucy was asked of all the famous stars she had worked with, who did she miss the most? She said “Harpo”.....”Such a dear kind man...
It's actually a rather common theater game--at our high school we called it "Darling, I love you, won't you smile for me?"--to practice cracking each other up (and not cracking up ourselves) with just those words and staring into someone's eyes.
Harpo is my favorite of the Marx brothers. And who doesn't love Lucy ??? These two together are absolutely golden !!! Love them both 🤗❤️. Rest in peace Harpo Marx & Lucille Ball !!!
Lucy said in an interview that this was a rare moment for Harpo to work with another person on set at the same time and he had to keep being reminded about how the routine went. He was very happy to work with Lucy again as she did appear in one of the Marx Brothers movies.
This is comedy as it should be; near perfect timing, and a performance that's superb! How anyone could give this a "dislike" is beyond me! For any aspiring comedians (and comediennes) this is what you should be aiming for!
The sad part of it is that in this jaded day and age, there is no demand for this style of Comedy, We buy $100 tickets to sit in seats for an hour or two and comedy is people talking,. To us, at us and about us. Comedy in words, meanings and inflections. Harpo and Lucy spoke not a word, and yet they communicated more than you will ever hear from one of those $100 seats. Today. people would hear nothing, get bored, stand up and leave to get their money back. What you saw between Lucy and Harpo was Vaudeville from the turn of the 20th century. Now, in the 21st Century, Vaudeville is too sophisticated for today's jaded audiences. It's over their heads.
I love watching old shows and movies. There was no cgi, special effects, or multiple cuts for a single scene. They had to do this without fail in pretty much one take. True skill. And there is no female comic funnier than Lucille Ball. She was a legend.
I am amazed at the stuff silent movie comedians did, like Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd. Most of the time they did not have stuntpeople. Buster Keaton was especially physical.
I never tire of watching ILL. Great cure for depression, just watch Lucy and her friends. I highly recommend a trip to Jamestown NY. The birthday celebration festival weekend is the best. My mom and I even stayed an extra day. I have very fond memories of our mother-daughter weekend in Jamestown, NY.
Though there have been tons of fabulous female TV stars in the 50s and 60s, Lucy always rises above with her style and talent and what she's done on the small and large screen.
@@elwoodblues9613 I watch Harpo Marx play “Take Me Out To The Ballgame” at the start of every Baseball Season, and again when my beloved St. Louis Cardinals are eliminated from contention every year.

I wished I lived in this era. I’m almost 40 years old and Lucille Ball is my favorite and always will be. I just for the first time started to listen to My Favorite Husband. It’s very interesting!
"I Love Lucy" was in widespread re-runs when I was growing up in the late 1960s and '70s. It was just part of the background noise of my childhood -- seems like yesterday. Hard to believe, in retrospect, that Harpo Marx's heyday (1930s) was closer in time to "I Love Lucy," than Lucille Ball's TV show (1950s) is to the present day.
Absolutely.🙂 and it is now 2022 and I still laugh at every episode and always will. At almost 69, it is the best remedy when I am in a bad mood. Bring out the DVDs, popcorn, and ice tea. Oh yes, a nice warm blanket and cozy chair. What could be better.❤🙂
This is my all-time favorite scene.,. This was comedic gold... Because it shows exactly why she was considered of the funniest and greatest comedic stars that ever lived..
In my book the 3 greatest American comedians of the 20th century were Buster Keaton, Harpo Marx, and Lucille Ball. To see two of these ultimates working together so perfectly is a tremendous gift. I love Harpo, and of course I love Lucy.
My second favorite is "Be A Pal" when she dresses up and mimes to Carmen Miranda. This is the song Harpo and Chico did together in 1941 "The Big Store" and again in a TV show in 1952.
Lucy and Harpo were awesome in this, thanks! The "mirror routine," made famous in The Marx Brothers' Duck Soup (1933), was in fact first performed by Max Linder in Seven Years Bad Luck (1921). It's also very good and maybe my favorite version?
You can see that Harpo had to hold his tongue to keep from bursting out laughing 1:07 when he stood in front of Lucy mimicking his face. Two giants of comedy.
they are truly masters of their craft. For Lucy to keep up with Harpo in terms of facial expressions etc was amazing. She truly is a great talent,
Dare I say that she did better than Chico and Groucho in the same skit from Duck Soup....
Absolutely!
No bet that Lucy had to have gone over and over that routine with Harpo.
My favorite episode. Or close I Love Lucy and The Marx Brothers.
It must have taken them ages to get this scene right
This may be the single greatest comedy bit ever on TV. Two absolute legends. Really fun to watch!

Lucy was indeed great - but nobody - nobody, can top Groucho as the greatest Comedian of ALL TIME !!!
Now that is one hell of a brilliant performance by two amazing comedic actors!
One of all time Lucy classics. How they could keep from just exploding with laughter is amazing.
Harvey Korman had to just make his hilarious outbursts part of the act and so did Tim Conway of her variety show
This (only) three minute bit between Lucy and Harpo surpasses ANYTHING on TV today!!
I agree!
@@ReneeBraxton SO VERY TRUE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lucy was in the Marx Bros film Room Service- she remained friends with Harpo until his death

One of the greatest moments in the history of television. Vaudeville had landed in everyone's living room through this 1950s episode of I LOVE LUCY.
In interviews Lucy has said when she first started out in the business, she wanted to be a part of vaudeville but she didn't realize vaudeville was dead by the time she began in the business.

I don’t want to trust him because he’s crazy, immature, outrageous, chaotic, not a fuck given, and funny

Actually, Lucy does it wrong. Harpo has his left hand in front of his right one, and so does Lucy. In a mirror, it would have been the opposite.
Also, when Harpo honks the horn he does it with his right hand. so does Lucy: she should have done it with her heft hand.

Recently read Harpo's book ... Harpo Speaks! well worth reading ... a nice, good man who arranged a happy life for himself & his family ...
I LOVED the part where he would torture the snobby guys at his golf club by playing naked.
I was a huge Marx Bros fan beginning in the early 1970s and read Harpo Speaks in about 1975. Wonderful book
Love how Lucy and Harpo did the mirror routine it was so Cool
